from bouncing all over the place."},{"startTime":122.62,"endTime":126.0,"body":"I worked in long-term care doing hospice care and working"},{"startTime":126.0,"endTime":129.22,"body":"with Alzheimer's dementia residents and while I did that I"},{"startTime":129.22,"endTime":132.84,"body":"was pregnant and these sweet little ladies couldn't"},{"startTime":132.84,"endTime":133.78,"body":"remember their names."},{"startTime":133.98,"endTime":137.22,"body":"They couldn't remember their families but they and they"},{"startTime":137.22,"endTime":139.58,"body":"couldn't remember my name but they knew they loved me and"},{"startTime":139.58,"endTime":142.26,"body":"they would tell me all about their birth stories and they"},{"startTime":142.26,"endTime":145.66,"body":"would tell me all about their babies and they would look at"},{"startTime":145.66,"endTime":147.84,"body":"my pregnant belly and it would bring back all these"},{"startTime":147.84,"endTime":151.3,"body":"memories and so that kind of like reignited that passion of"},{"startTime":151.3,"endTime":153.16,"body":"like this is so important."},{"startTime":153.66,"endTime":158.24,"body":"Like this early season of motherhood is what it shapes who"},{"startTime":158.24,"endTime":163.74,"body":"we are as women and so that kind of I stopped working there"},{"startTime":163.74,"endTime":167.06,"body":"when I had my third during COVID and after that I just"},{"startTime":167.06,"endTime":174.24,"body":"jumped in full force and now I am certified labor and"},{"startTime":174.24,"endTime":177.46,"body":"postpartum doula and I get to do childbirth education."},{"startTime":178.2,"endTime":181.12,"body":"I've ended up starting an agency which wasn't even part of"},{"startTime":181.12,"endTime":185.2,"body":"the plan and I teach breastfeeding education as well"},{"startTime":185.2,"endTime":187.96,"body":"through the Thompson method so it's been quite the journey"},{"startTime":187.96,"endTime":189.46,"body":"and day."},{"startTime":231.8,"endTime":235.8,"body":"So talk to me about what kind of what has the journey been"},{"startTime":235.8,"endTime":239.98,"body":"from when you first started to now in terms of business"},{"startTime":239.98,"endTime":240.24,"body":"growth?"},{"startTime":240.44,"endTime":241.34,"body":"Like when you first began,"},{"startTime":241.54,"endTime":243.94,"body":"were you already certified in all the things that you're"},{"startTime":243.94,"endTime":244.74,"body":"certified in now,"},{"startTime":244.84,"endTime":247.04,"body":"or did you start with just one service or what did that"},{"startTime":247.04,"endTime":247.64,"body":"look like for you?"},{"startTime":249.0,"endTime":251.22,"body":"No, it's definitely been a gradual process."},{"startTime":252.38,"endTime":252.9,"body":"I,"},{"startTime":253.18,"endTime":257.82,"body":"it all really started because I struggled so much with breastfeeding,"},{"startTime":258.399,"endTime":259.519,"body":"my first two babies,"},{"startTime":260.24,"endTime":263.28,"body":"and it ended up finding the Thompson Method online as like,"},{"startTime":263.56,"endTime":265.44,"body":"it was a Facebook ad and I clicked it,"},{"startTime":265.52,"endTime":267.42,"body":"which is not usually my personality."},{"startTime":268.74,"endTime":269.82,"body":"Usually I just keep going,"},{"startTime":269.98,"endTime":272.5,"body":"but I was so desperate to find something that was"},{"startTime":272.5,"endTime":274.4,"body":"different, something that I felt like would work."},{"startTime":274.86,"endTime":276.46,"body":"And so I tried the Thompson Method,"},{"startTime":276.46,"endTime":279.78,"body":"ended up having my baby and like, it was amazing."},{"startTime":280.02,"endTime":281.78,"body":"I had the best breastfeeding experience."},{"startTime":281.98,"endTime":282.62,"body":"I had no issues."},{"startTime":283.7,"endTime":286.1,"body":"And so that, like, that combined with the,"},{"startTime":286.14,"endTime":288.14,"body":"that feeling at the nursing home was like, okay,"},{"startTime":288.16,"endTime":291.32,"body":"like this is the moment to do something different,"},{"startTime":291.88,"endTime":294.34,"body":"to do something that I love, to love going to work,"},{"startTime":294.48,"endTime":295.52,"body":"to help women."},{"startTime":296.8,"endTime":300.12,"body":"And so when they offered the Thompson Method Academy,"},{"startTime":300.22,"endTime":303.1,"body":"I jumped into that and became an educator."},{"startTime":303.1,"endTime":305.28,"body":"And at the same time, I did my dual certification."},{"startTime":306.22,"endTime":309.82,"body":"And so that's really like what I did for the first couple"},{"startTime":309.82,"endTime":310.44,"body":"of years."},{"startTime":311.22,"endTime":311.64,"body":"I recently,"},{"startTime":312.42,"endTime":315.44,"body":"I started getting clients and people started spreading the"},{"startTime":315.44,"endTime":317.34,"body":"word and things just took off,"},{"startTime":317.46,"endTime":320.18,"body":"which is a blessing and it's amazing."},{"startTime":321.56,"endTime":326.28,"body":"And so I picked up postpartum and recently I've had other"},{"startTime":326.28,"endTime":329.06,"body":"women who've come up to me and been like, hey, like,"},{"startTime":329.1,"endTime":330.32,"body":"I would love to be a dual lover."},{"startTime":330.46,"endTime":332.48,"body":"I don't know what to do or how to do it."},{"startTime":332.48,"endTime":334.82,"body":"And I remember feeling that way, like all alone,"},{"startTime":335.6,"endTime":339.1,"body":"into little work and not knowing what I was doing and the"},{"startTime":339.1,"endTime":342.44,"body":"imposter syndrome and all the things that we struggle with,"},{"startTime":343.0,"endTime":343.32,"body":"sorry."},{"startTime":345.24,"endTime":348.58,"body":"And so now I get to help walk these women through the"},{"startTime":348.58,"endTime":351.44,"body":"process and help encourage and inspire them."},{"startTime":351.6,"endTime":355.42,"body":"And they encourage and inspire me to do more every day."},{"startTime":356.0,"endTime":357.28,"body":"Yeah, I love that."},{"startTime":357.5,"endTime":359.54,"body":"That's part of why I started team this year,"},{"startTime":359.54,"endTime":360.36,"body":"because I was like,"},{"startTime":360.36,"endTime":364.52,"body":"I want to help you get started and also like,"},{"startTime":364.52,"endTime":367.06,"body":"I have extra folks that I can't take."},{"startTime":367.36,"endTime":368.02,"body":"So I might as well,"},{"startTime":368.18,"endTime":372.16,"body":"like that runoff might as well go to actual people and you"},{"startTime":372.16,"endTime":374.98,"body":"benefit from the fact that like my company is fairly well"},{"startTime":374.98,"endTime":376.14,"body":"-known, you know,"},{"startTime":376.22,"endTime":379.92,"body":"but also like I can then like mentor you through it and"},{"startTime":379.92,"endTime":383.04,"body":"like be kind of a jumping off point even for you to have a"},{"startTime":383.04,"endTime":385.22,"body":"thriving business of your own, you know, which is,"},{"startTime":385.8,"endTime":386.58,"body":"I really love it."},{"startTime":386.72,"endTime":389.36,"body":"It's an awesome part that I also was not planning on doing."},{"startTime":390.62,"endTime":391.02,"body":"Right."},{"startTime":391.66,"endTime":394.38,"body":"It's amazing when life just happens and it all works out"},{"startTime":394.38,"endTime":396.5,"body":"the way it's supposed to and you look back and it's like,"},{"startTime":396.62,"endTime":397.88,"body":"oh my gosh, team member in July."},{"startTime":411.8,"endTime":414.46,"body":"I was like, well, here we are."},{"startTime":415.14,"endTime":416.08,"body":"Like, nevermind."},{"startTime":416.7,"endTime":418.1,"body":"Like, that episode came out and I was like,"},{"startTime":418.1,"endTime":419.3,"body":"that's already changed."},{"startTime":420.16,"endTime":421.96,"body":"I talked to you."},{"startTime":423.24,"endTime":423.7,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":425.2,"endTime":427.22,"body":"10 year, like pie in the sky."},{"startTime":427.46,"endTime":430.46,"body":"Like maybe I'll do this in 10 years when I feel"},{"startTime":430.46,"endTime":433.06,"body":"established, but I think the doula journey,"},{"startTime":433.14,"endTime":435.1,"body":"and I don't know if this is like this for everyone else,"},{"startTime":435.76,"endTime":439.02,"body":"but I feel like it was just being brave enough to jump in."},{"startTime":439.02,"endTime":439.7,"body":"Oh yeah."},{"startTime":440.38,"endTime":443.62,"body":"Keep doing things scared and it's paid off."},{"startTime":444.18,"endTime":446.94,"body":"So to anybody who is feeling nervous, just start doing it."},{"startTime":448.0,"endTime":449.48,"body":"Yeah, 100%."},{"startTime":449.48,"endTime":451.74,"body":"Well, and I think when you like,"},{"startTime":451.82,"endTime":457.42,"body":"it's so easy to have this elusive amount of births or years"},{"startTime":457.42,"endTime":458.04,"body":"or whatever,"},{"startTime":458.04,"endTime":460.8,"body":"that would make you like experienced enough for something"},{"startTime":460.8,"endTime":464.48,"body":"like an agency or something like a team or mentoring or you"},{"startTime":464.48,"endTime":464.96,"body":"know what I mean?"},{"startTime":465.58,"endTime":466.56,"body":"Yeah, that does not exist."},{"startTime":466.78,"endTime":467.76,"body":"Like that is not a thing."},{"startTime":468.02,"endTime":472.64,"body":"And I think in a field where we get so little start off"},{"startTime":472.64,"endTime":472.98,"body":"help,"},{"startTime":472.98,"endTime":476.22,"body":"like in terms of establishing a business and things like"},{"startTime":476.22,"endTime":476.4,"body":"that,"},{"startTime":476.4,"endTime":479.66,"body":"like we're not it's not like there are like entry level"},{"startTime":479.66,"endTime":482.04,"body":"doula positions, really, you know, and so,"},{"startTime":482.14,"endTime":485.86,"body":"so we get trained and then it's just like best of luck."},{"startTime":486.34,"endTime":487.68,"body":"So in that scenario,"},{"startTime":487.7,"endTime":490.16,"body":"if you've been doing this for one year,"},{"startTime":490.16,"endTime":492.96,"body":"you have exponentially more information than that person"},{"startTime":492.96,"endTime":496.7,"body":"does, you know, and that can be so valuable,"},{"startTime":496.7,"endTime":500.6,"body":"even if you also are new ish to the field, you know?"},{"startTime":501.0,"endTime":501.3,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":501.52,"endTime":506.58,"body":"But in the doula, like our, our turnover rate is so high."},{"startTime":506.84,"endTime":510.94,"body":"I think because of that, because, you know,"},{"startTime":511.02,"endTime":513.72,"body":"we go into doula work with all this passion and we want,"},{"startTime":513.919,"endTime":516.62,"body":"we want to help and we want to serve women and we want to"},{"startTime":516.62,"endTime":520.64,"body":"do this amazing thing to help other women or other,"},{"startTime":520.74,"endTime":521.76,"body":"you know, help our clients."},{"startTime":522.5,"endTime":526.04,"body":"And then we get bogged down in all the business stuff."},{"startTime":527.1,"endTime":530.44,"body":"And so really starting with the business, how do we,"},{"startTime":530.46,"endTime":531.84,"body":"how do we run a business?"},{"startTime":532.36,"endTime":536.06,"body":"It's not as hard as, you know, it doesn't have to be hard."},{"startTime":536.32,"endTime":536.84,"body":"It can be hard."},{"startTime":536.98,"endTime":538.88,"body":"It doesn't have to be hard, but how do we do that?"},{"startTime":539.8,"endTime":541.6,"body":"And so I think that is huge because,"},{"startTime":542.42,"endTime":544.18,"body":"and then like charging what we're worth."},{"startTime":544.38,"endTime":544.96,"body":"Oh my gosh."},{"startTime":545.16,"endTime":545.24,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":546.0,"endTime":549.2,"body":"Like, like your time, and I tell my,"},{"startTime":549.38,"endTime":550.58,"body":"my doulas that work with me,"},{"startTime":550.58,"endTime":554.66,"body":"like your time's so valuable and your service is valuable."},{"startTime":555.18,"endTime":556.08,"body":"And I think,"},{"startTime":556.08,"endTime":559.42,"body":"I think a lot of times people do a lot of unpaid work,"},{"startTime":559.74,"endTime":562.16,"body":"doulas do a lot of unpaid work because we love it."},{"startTime":562.24,"endTime":563.56,"body":"And because we love our clients,"},{"startTime":564.66,"endTime":566.02,"body":"that makes it very unsustainable."},{"startTime":566.74,"endTime":570.38,"body":"Like, yes, I want to do this for the next 15 or 20 years."},{"startTime":570.66,"endTime":573.4,"body":"I want to do this in some respect until I retire."},{"startTime":573.78,"endTime":578.46,"body":"And if I go home feeling resentful or I go home and I've"},{"startTime":578.46,"endTime":581.36,"body":"been at a birth for 50 hours and I haven't seen my kids and"},{"startTime":581.36,"endTime":582.94,"body":"it wasn't worth it for me."},{"startTime":583.16,"endTime":585.72,"body":"And it wasn't worth it for my kids to not have their mom"},{"startTime":585.72,"endTime":588.1,"body":"and my husband, like, yeah."},{"startTime":589.48,"endTime":590.66,"body":"And I think that's huge."},{"startTime":591.0,"endTime":591.44,"body":"a lot."},{"startTime":592.4,"endTime":593.64,"body":"Yeah, well, and I mean,"},{"startTime":593.66,"endTime":596.22,"body":"divorce rates are creepy high for birth workers,"},{"startTime":596.24,"endTime":597.8,"body":"burnout is creepy high."},{"startTime":598.68,"endTime":598.94,"body":"And I mean,"},{"startTime":598.94,"endTime":602.38,"body":"I think one thing that one message that's like one of my,"},{"startTime":602.58,"endTime":603.0,"body":"you know,"},{"startTime":603.12,"endTime":606.62,"body":"probably something I'll say until I die is that like,"},{"startTime":606.82,"endTime":610.08,"body":"when you're giving services at no cost, there is a cost,"},{"startTime":610.2,"endTime":611.36,"body":"the cost is your cost,"},{"startTime":611.42,"endTime":614.62,"body":"like you are paying to give those services away."},{"startTime":614.92,"endTime":617.82,"body":"And there are times when you can afford to do that, right,"},{"startTime":617.84,"endTime":620.4,"body":"but you need to live in the space that you're actually"},{"startTime":621.0,"endTime":623.66,"body":"paying money to do this, not just not getting paid,"},{"startTime":623.86,"endTime":626.12,"body":"like you're, you're in the negative in this sense,"},{"startTime":626.16,"endTime":627.64,"body":"you know, and,"},{"startTime":628.0,"endTime":631.38,"body":"and I do think we do so much at our own expense,"},{"startTime":631.38,"endTime":633.0,"body":"that ultimately,"},{"startTime":633.02,"endTime":637.9,"body":"like we cannot sustain doing and we take on burdens that"},{"startTime":637.9,"endTime":639.36,"body":"are not ours to carry."},{"startTime":639.54,"endTime":642.66,"body":"Like I, like, I don't know, I, yeah,"},{"startTime":642.88,"endTime":645.0,"body":"I don't need to go down that rabbit hole, but"},{"startTime":646.0,"endTime":647.0,"body":"It's so true."},{"startTime":647.58,"endTime":648.36,"body":"But not only that,"},{"startTime":648.36,"endTime":651.82,"body":"but then we devalue the work of the doulas around us."},{"startTime":652.68,"endTime":657.12,"body":"And so we build this culture that it should be free."},{"startTime":657.8,"endTime":661.4,"body":"And while we love for every single client that I come"},{"startTime":661.4,"endTime":663.24,"body":"across to have a doula,"},{"startTime":663.46,"endTime":665.52,"body":"I feel like everyone who wants a doula should be able to"},{"startTime":665.52,"endTime":666.06,"body":"have it."},{"startTime":666.66,"endTime":672.72,"body":"But how do we do that and still value our fellow doulas in"},{"startTime":672.72,"endTime":673.04,"body":"their time?"},{"startTime":674.0,"endTime":674.68,"body":"I think that's important."},{"startTime":675.7,"endTime":676.84,"body":"Yeah, well, and I mean,"},{"startTime":676.84,"endTime":680.04,"body":"I think the reality is if you're doing it in a way that you"},{"startTime":680.04,"endTime":683.14,"body":"are going to slowly burn out or quickly burn out,"},{"startTime":683.14,"endTime":686.46,"body":"then you also are one less person who will be helping"},{"startTime":686.46,"endTime":688.24,"body":"people in this space, right?"},{"startTime":688.42,"endTime":692.22,"body":"And this space is so important to have help and have"},{"startTime":692.22,"endTime":694.68,"body":"guidance and have education and have support."},{"startTime":695.4,"endTime":698.64,"body":"And then if we're just like ripping through doulas one year"},{"startTime":698.64,"endTime":700.18,"body":"at a time, you know,"},{"startTime":700.2,"endTime":702.88,"body":"then it's just like this perpetual cycle of not enough."},{"startTime":703.88,"endTime":707.04,"body":"And then not enough finances to keep it going, you know,"},{"startTime":707.1,"endTime":709.26,"body":"which is just not sustainable either."},{"startTime":710.14,"endTime":713.8,"body":"Anyway, all of my work is because of that."},{"startTime":714.8,"endTime":715.64,"body":"I love it."},{"startTime":716.06,"endTime":719.86,"body":"Like this whole branch of my business is because doulas"},{"startTime":719.86,"endTime":722.4,"body":"really suck at sustaining themselves."},{"startTime":723.2,"endTime":725.68,"body":"And because I think we do so much of this by ourselves that"},{"startTime":725.68,"endTime":727.94,"body":"we are just constantly second guessing too, right?"},{"startTime":728.0,"endTime":729.88,"body":"Where we're like, I don't know, am I doing this right?"},{"startTime":730.04,"endTime":730.72,"body":"Am I doing that wrong?"},{"startTime":731.18,"endTime":732.64,"body":"Like how will I know?"},{"startTime":732.94,"endTime":735.22,"body":"Because I just doula by myself all the time."},{"startTime":736.02,"endTime":738.7,"body":"And so that community piece is also part of what I think is"},{"startTime":738.7,"endTime":741.6,"body":"really valuable in a team where like my team gets to see"},{"startTime":742.1,"endTime":744.06,"body":"like when an issue comes up with a client,"},{"startTime":744.06,"endTime":745.44,"body":"this is how I handle it."},{"startTime":745.44,"endTime":747.14,"body":"And this is what my contract says."},{"startTime":747.22,"endTime":750.98,"body":"And this is how I honor the time that you've put in, Dr."},{"startTime":1256.42,"endTime":1258.82,"body":"Robin Thompson is the founder of this method."},{"startTime":1258.9,"endTime":1261.76,"body":"And basically she saw all these same things too even started."},{"startTime":1273.92,"endTime":1275.94,"body":"And so she ended up doing a ton of research,"},{"startTime":1275.96,"endTime":1279.06,"body":"got her PhD and that PhD was the foundation that I had a healthy supply."},{"startTime":1551.88,"endTime":1553.92,"body":"And I didn't just press when there was no formula."},{"startTime":1555.0,"endTime":1558.56,"body":"Yeah, no my gosh, I had so many clients freaking out."},{"startTime":1559.4,"endTime":1561.86,"body":"And we were like searching everywhere for food for their"},{"startTime":1561.86,"endTime":1562.16,"body":"babies."},{"startTime":1562.4,"endTime":1562.86,"body":"And that's like,"},{"startTime":1563.56,"endTime":1565.38,"body":"That's like your worst nightmare as a parent."},{"startTime":1565.54,"endTime":1566.66,"body":"Yeah, oh, absolutely."},{"startTime":1566.0,"endTime":1566.9,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":1567.16,"endTime":1568.86,"body":"And so like, we've even seen that more recently,"},{"startTime":1569.02,"endTime":1569.78,"body":"like where, you know,"},{"startTime":1569.92,"endTime":1572.02,"body":"certain brands have gone out and things like that."},{"startTime":1572.12,"endTime":1575.16,"body":"And it's so stressful and you're already stressed,"},{"startTime":1575.42,"endTime":1577.46,"body":"you're already overwhelmed, you're already exhausted."},{"startTime":1578.32,"endTime":1578.8,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":1578.92,"endTime":1581.88,"body":"We don't need anything extra to worry method."},{"startTime":1597.74,"endTime":1600.0,"body":"We have a whole team of midwives and Dr."},{"startTime":1600.16,"endTime":1603.9,"body":"Robin herself that will give us a call and like work doulas"},{"startTime":1628.96,"endTime":1632.2,"body":"to also know like what does it look like to add skill sets"},{"startTime":1632.2,"endTime":1635.14,"body":"and add things to their repertoire, right?"},{"startTime":1635.36,"endTime":1638.82,"body":"And we, I mean, I think, I know when I started, I was like,"},{"startTime":1638.82,"endTime":1639.82,"body":"okay, I'm doing birth."},{"startTime":1640.02,"endTime":1642.08,"body":"And then like, I guess I should do postpartum."},{"startTime":1642.44,"endTime":1645.6,"body":"And someone was constantly harping me to do a placenta"},{"startTime":1645.6,"endTime":1648.16,"body":"encapsulation, which I do not want to do,"},{"startTime":1648.22,"endTime":1649.46,"body":"nor do I ever plan to do."},{"startTime":1650.4,"endTime":1651.98,"body":"But like lactation, I mean,"},{"startTime":1651.98,"endTime":1654.38,"body":"I think eventually I wanted to be an IVCLT,"},{"startTime":1654.42,"endTime":1657.44,"body":"but also like that process is long, you know,"},{"startTime":1657.5,"endTime":1660.58,"body":"and so when you're thinking through, and I mean,"},{"startTime":1660.58,"endTime":1661.44,"body":"I'm a child birth educator,"},{"startTime":1661.66,"endTime":1663.92,"body":"so like layering on your services,"},{"startTime":1664.36,"endTime":1666.9,"body":"I think one thing that can be really powerful is finding"},{"startTime":1666.9,"endTime":1671.52,"body":"something you believe in and love teaching and love like"},{"startTime":1671.52,"endTime":1673.02,"body":"supporting folks in that."},{"startTime":1673.28,"endTime":1675.46,"body":"It widens your reach, right?"},{"startTime":1675.62,"endTime":1679.3,"body":"But also it's not something that people call you at 2 a.m."},{"startTime":1679.38,"endTime":1681.68,"body":"to do a Thompson method class, you know?"},{"startTime":1681.68,"endTime":1685.32,"body":"So it's one more way that your body can like show up for"},{"startTime":1685.32,"endTime":1688.66,"body":"this work without being on call, without being exhausted,"},{"startTime":1688.82,"endTime":1689.7,"body":"you know?"},{"startTime":1689.78,"endTime":1691.44,"body":"And so when we're thinking about like doing this"},{"startTime":1691.44,"endTime":1692.8,"body":"sustainably for a long time,"},{"startTime":1692.8,"endTime":1696.58,"body":"eventually the physical labor is going to be something that"},{"startTime":1696.58,"endTime":1699.7,"body":"we phase out a bit more because we have to, you know,"},{"startTime":1699.72,"endTime":1702.78,"body":"as our bodies get older, as like life gets more demanding,"},{"startTime":1703.02,"endTime":1703.16,"body":"right?"},{"startTime":1703.22,"endTime":1704.48,"body":"Like whatever that looks like."},{"startTime":1704.92,"endTime":1707.12,"body":"And something like being a child birth educator,"},{"startTime":1707.38,"endTime":1710.98,"body":"breastfeeding educator is a huge piece that you can also"},{"startTime":1710.98,"endTime":1713.58,"body":"rely on in your business."},{"startTime":1714.46,"endTime":1718.3,"body":"I will also say for newer doulas that are listening to"},{"startTime":1718.3,"endTime":1718.64,"body":"this,"},{"startTime":1718.9,"endTime":1722.32,"body":"I think you have got to have some kind of foundation and"},{"startTime":1722.32,"endTime":1722.94,"body":"early latching."},{"startTime":1724.02,"endTime":1728.76,"body":"And one of the things that I have seen consistently is that"},{"startTime":1728.76,"endTime":1732.74,"body":"in a hospital setting, they have like, you know, I mean,"},{"startTime":1732.78,"endTime":1735.74,"body":"the nurses are on a timetable, right?"},{"startTime":1735.86,"endTime":1738.96,"body":"And so it's not their fault that they're like, hey,"},{"startTime":1739.6,"endTime":1741.06,"body":"baby should last by this time."},{"startTime":1741.3,"endTime":1743.16,"body":"Like we should weigh the baby by this time, right?"},{"startTime":1743.24,"endTime":1746.62,"body":"Like that's part of their actual protocol in their job."},{"startTime":1747.1,"endTime":1748.82,"body":"So I don't fault them for that."},{"startTime":1749.14,"endTime":1750.66,"body":"That's how that system is set up."},{"startTime":1750.66,"endTime":1752.34,"body":"And it's not set up for bonding."},{"startTime":1752.56,"endTime":1755.08,"body":"It's not set up for early latching, going smoothly,"},{"startTime":1755.2,"endTime":1755.78,"body":"et cetera."},{"startTime":1756.36,"endTime":1759.38,"body":"But what I consistently see is most babies are not trying"},{"startTime":1759.38,"endTime":1762.12,"body":"to latch until 30 to 40 minutes postpartum."},{"startTime":1762.22,"endTime":1764.36,"body":"Like they're not coming out latching immediately in most"},{"startTime":1764.36,"endTime":1765.24,"body":"cases, right?"},{"startTime":1765.78,"endTime":1768.94,"body":"Also, if a baby is not earnestly looking,"},{"startTime":1769.38,"endTime":1773.62,"body":"like searching for a nipple, they're not ready to latch."},{"startTime":1773.94,"endTime":1776.2,"body":"And so if we shove them onto a nipple,"},{"startTime":1776.28,"endTime":1778.32,"body":"they're just gonna literally sit with it in their mouth."},{"startTime":1778.52,"endTime":1778.54,"body":"Like,"},{"startTime":1778.58,"endTime":1782.3,"body":"and then we're like setting up our clients to think that"},{"startTime":1782.3,"endTime":1783.14,"body":"they can't do it."},{"startTime":1783.28,"endTime":1783.9,"body":"Something's wrong."},{"startTime":1784.18,"endTime":1785.3,"body":"Their baby doesn't know how."},{"startTime":1785.82,"endTime":1786.3,"body":"I'm like, no,"},{"startTime":1786.64,"endTime":1789.0,"body":"she's just like still pissed that you shoved her out of"},{"startTime":1789.0,"endTime":1789.5,"body":"you, right?"},{"startTime":1789.62,"endTime":1791.8,"body":"Like she's not ready."},{"startTime":1792.39,"endTime":1796.32,"body":"And when we give them time to actually start searching,"},{"startTime":1797.0,"endTime":1799.64,"body":"and if we're assisting at that point,"},{"startTime":1800.26,"endTime":1804.2,"body":"we also set up the success rate to be so much higher."},{"startTime":1804.88,"endTime":1806.54,"body":"And like you said, like set up our clients."},{"startTime":1806.7,"endTime":1808.76,"body":"Like I can't tell you the number of clients who've said to"},{"startTime":1808.76,"endTime":1811.3,"body":"me, we saw the lactation consultant in the hospital,"},{"startTime":1811.94,"endTime":1815.12,"body":"but like basically like we breastfed with sick hands while"},{"startTime":1815.12,"endTime":1818.34,"body":"she was here and then she left and we don't have sick"},{"startTime":1818.34,"endTime":1818.82,"body":"hands."},{"startTime":1818.96,"endTime":1820.32,"body":"And so we don't know how to do that."},{"startTime":1820.9,"endTime":1822.54,"body":"If we don't have a third human with us, right?"},{"startTime":1822.68,"endTime":1824.48,"body":"And I'm like, yeah, that's the problem."},{"startTime":1824.7,"endTime":1826.86,"body":"Is that like she did it on your body,"},{"startTime":1826.86,"endTime":1829.46,"body":"but you don't know how to do it on your own body and you"},{"startTime":1829.46,"endTime":1831.02,"body":"have to do it every couple hours."},{"startTime":1831.46,"endTime":1832.68,"body":"You know, like this isn't something,"},{"startTime":1833.14,"endTime":1834.66,"body":"you can just wait till you see her again."},{"startTime":1835.0,"endTime":1835.96,"body":"You know, like, no."},{"startTime":1837.08,"endTime":1839.28,"body":"Anyway, we could get a lot of soap boxes."},{"startTime":1840.0,"endTime":1840.38,"body":"Well,"},{"startTime":1840.54,"endTime":1844.24,"body":"and another tough thing is a lot of times when someone else"},{"startTime":1844.24,"endTime":1846.98,"body":"is manipulating your breast into your baby's mouth,"},{"startTime":1847.34,"endTime":1848.92,"body":"that nipple ends up somewhere weird."},{"startTime":1849.94,"endTime":1851.4,"body":"It ends up in a gum line,"},{"startTime":1851.58,"endTime":1853.86,"body":"it ends up up in the roof of your baby's mouth,"},{"startTime":1853.86,"endTime":1855.7,"body":"and then we get horrendous nipple trauma."},{"startTime":1855.86,"endTime":1858.0,"body":"And then you end up going back to the lactation consultant,"},{"startTime":1858.58,"endTime":1859.82,"body":"then you end up with nipple shield,"},{"startTime":1860.0,"endTime":1861.04,"body":"then you end up formula feeding."},{"startTime":1861.34,"endTime":1861.58,"body":"And like,"},{"startTime":1861.58,"endTime":1864.6,"body":"this is that cascade of breastfeeding interventions that"},{"startTime":1864.6,"endTime":1868.84,"body":"we, we talk about, and it doesn't have to be that hard."},{"startTime":1868.84,"endTime":1872.4,"body":"All of those things are 100% avoidable."},{"startTime":1874.86,"endTime":1875.34,"body":"100%."},{"startTime":1875.34,"endTime":1878.36,"body":"And then we have moms that are at home with their babies,"},{"startTime":1879.0,"endTime":1880.64,"body":"and they're recovering and they're resting."},{"startTime":1881.38,"endTime":1883.28,"body":"And if they have a question, they can give us a call."},{"startTime":1884.6,"endTime":1887.78,"body":"They, they have been empowered,"},{"startTime":1887.92,"endTime":1890.38,"body":"so they usually don't have as much support."},{"startTime":1891.88,"endTime":1893.28,"body":"But like you were saying earlier,"},{"startTime":1893.44,"endTime":1896.76,"body":"I want to go back to like the diversifying your correspond some kind of lactation"},{"startTime":1908.64,"endTime":1911.74,"body":"education and learn for yourself."},{"startTime":1912.78,"endTime":1915.56,"body":"I would recommend maybe not going through like the more"},{"startTime":1915.56,"endTime":1916.32,"body":"traditional methods,"},{"startTime":1916.4,"endTime":1918.32,"body":"like for something that's instinctive based,"},{"startTime":1918.98,"endTime":1920.02,"body":"something that's gentle,"},{"startTime":1920.04,"endTime":1922.76,"body":"because the hospital can offer the hospital model of"},{"startTime":1922.76,"endTime":1925.1,"body":"education, but it's not to work."},{"startTime":1925.64,"endTime":1926.92,"body":"Yeah, unfortunately."},{"startTime":1928.4,"endTime":1930.02,"body":"So there are there are other methods."},{"startTime":1930.2,"endTime":1932.76,"body":"I mean, I love the Thompson method, not always promote it,"},{"startTime":1932.78,"endTime":1936.4,"body":"but there are other methods so that you can show up best"},{"startTime":1936.4,"endTime":1937.26,"body":"for your clients."},{"startTime":1938.84,"endTime":1940.5,"body":"And support them in those early hours."},{"startTime":1942.0,"endTime":1945.44,"body":"Yeah, yeah, no, I agree with that
