Bees are deeply woven into the cosmology and spiritual practices of many ancient cultures. The pyramid temples of the Yucatan are believed by Maya people to represent the unusual pattern of the Melipona Beehives which are shaped in tiered layers. The stingless Melipona bees are crucial in the survival of the rainforests of the Yucatan and the Amazon. It is interesting to note too, that melipona bees can be found in areas with Aztec pyramids as well.

The unusual melipona honey has been cultivated the same way for at least 3200 years. It has unique medicinal properties, and is used to treat conjunctivitis, glaucoma, and other ailments. Shamans use it ceremonially.

Grateful to have interviewed Director and Founder of the Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project, Rebecca Ann Robertson , about her organization's mission helping indigenous Mayan-speaking women learn this endangered way of life, giving them training, resources and Melipona stingless bees to continue this ancient tradition. Rebecca learned that one of the few surviving Mayan Codices reveals the deep spiritual connections earlier Maya people shared with bees.

In our FB conversation, Rebecca shares her experiences with Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project recipients, the importance of these bees to the rainforests of Mexico and the Amazon, and her time at Chichen Itza at the Equinox. For more information, check out mayanmeliponabee.org
