Show Notes Transcript

Peer-to-peer mentorship is an underutilized tool that can significantly accelerate career development, particularly for those from underrepresented communities in sales and marketing.

Being both a mentor and a mentee can accelerate learning and provide new perspectives. However, there is a misconception that early career professionals may not have much to offer.

To make the most of peer-to-peer mentorship, make sure to align to one's own goals and values and pairing up with someone who shares similar ones. Open communication, trust, and vulnerability were noted as critical to building a strong relationship. Setting clear expectations, balancing interaction, and holding each other accountable were also seen as important.

[00:00:00] Dr. Jim: one of the biggest missed opportunities when it comes to career progression and career development, especially if you're from an underrepresented community in sales and marketing, is the concept of peer-to-peer mentoring. In this conversation we're going to cover how peer-to-peer mentorship can actually accelerate your ability to advance in your career.

[00:00:22] Dr. Jim: We're gonna learn about the value of learning from your peers. We're gonna talk about how to create a successful peer mentorship relationship. We're gonna talk about the value and benefits of being both a mentor and a mentee. And then we're gonna talk about the tips that you need to. Take into account to make the most of these relationships.

[00:00:43] Dr. Jim: So for those of you who are at the early to mid-career stage of your sales and marketing career, this is gonna be a conversation that you're gonna need to tune into because the sooner you put these into motion, the more effective you're gonna be when it comes to accelerating your career.

[00:00:59] Dr. Jim: [00:01:00] So let's talk a little bit about the value of peer-to-peer mentorship. It's a tool that. Really underutilized when it comes to personal and professional growth. Unlike traditional mentorship where you have a more experienced mentor interacting with a less experienced mentee, peer mentorship actually holds a lot.

[00:01:21] Dr. Jim: of Value in that both you and your mentor are at similar stages in your career development, and you can actually work to fill each other's gaps when it comes to what you know and what you don't know. I think one of the other areas that's overlooked about peer-to-peer mentorship is that a lot of early career sales and marketing professionals camp out in this area where they don't really feel like they have a lot to offer or a lot to teach, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

[00:01:54] Dr. Jim: There's a bunch of knowledge that you have that could be leveraged and is valuable for somebody else that's earlier in [00:02:00] their career or even at the same stage of your career. So don't be shy about leveraging that knowledge and utilizing that knowledge to not only improve your skills and advance your learning, but also help somebody else come along.

[00:02:12] Dr. Jim: When you're looking at how to create a successful peer-to-peer mentorship and relationship, you need to first recognize in yourself what are your goals and values, and then. Pair up with somebody who's sharing similar goals and values as you have. It's absolutely critical to be open in terms of your communication to make sure you're going into it with a level of trust and mutual respect, and it's gonna require some vulnerability on your part.

[00:02:39] Dr. Jim: Now, when it comes to building a strong peer to. Mentorship relationship. Here's some key things that you need to pay attention to. Make sure you're setting clear expectations on what the objectives are, what the outcomes are, the pacing, . Make sure that you're open and honest about what the goal is successes, challenges, [00:03:00] areas for growth.

[00:03:00] Dr. Jim: You have to lay that out on the table for all of this to work well. Make sure you're balanced in your interaction. Nobody wants to be the person or the person in the group that's always asking for stuff and never giving anything. So make sure you create space to be to be both somebody that's learning and also somebody that's teaching.

[00:03:18] Dr. Jim: and then last, but certainly not least, You certainly want to hold each other accountable for what you're trying to accomplish.

[00:03:24] Dr. Jim: When you're talking about the benefits of being both a mentor and mentee, some of this is really subtle. One of the best ways for you to accelerate your learning on any topic and also move you towards a stage of mastery is to teach somebody else.

[00:03:40] Dr. Jim: And that's where the value of mentorship c omes in, in a peer-to-peer relationship. You can share your knowledge, you can enhance each other's leadership skills, you can get new perspectives. These are all valuable things that happen. But I think for me, the biggest thing that stands out [00:04:00] is the opportunity to learn and master an element of the craft that I'm working on.

[00:04:04] Dr. Jim: When you're looking at trying to figure out how do you make the most of these relationships, there's a few things that you need to pay attention to. You always have to be proactive. Don't wait for some sort of trigger event for you to drive your outreach. You should always be in a regular pattern to engage in conversation both ways to unlock some piece of knowledge that you're trying to get, make sure you're embracing feedback. It's gotta be an open and honest conversation. And that has to apply to both sides of the equation. So you need to be focused on that improvement or continuous improvement mindset.

[00:04:42] Dr. Jim: For this to work,

[00:04:43] Dr. Jim: make sure you're network. This has come up several times in previous conversations where you need to be striving to be that industry expert. And the way that you do that is by being where the experts are. And then obviously take every opportunity to celebrate success, [00:05:00] because that's gonna be one of the key things that keeps you going. Helps you maintain your momentum in your learning journey.

[00:05:08] Dr. Jim: When you're thinking about your career development, especially if you're an early to mid-career sales and marketing professional from an underrepresented community, don't sleep on peer-to-peer mentorship.

[00:05:19] Dr. Jim: Make sure. You are embracing the collaborative approach and this actually helps you build a community around yourself that's gonna come in handy at any any stage in your career, but especially as you get more and more experience. Hopefully this was useful. If you liked what you heard, tell a friend till next time,
