The interview was done we sat in the upper floors by the rare books collection of the San Diego Central Library designed by one of Kevin deFreitas' mentors: Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA.

As the principal of Kevin deFreitas Architects, Kevin has had the
good fortune of many exceptional collaborations resulting in a
diverse portfolio of recognized projects, a public restroom on the
sand in Ocean Beach, a rammed earth chapel on the Rincon
Indian Reservation, urban infill rowhomes made of tilt-up concrete,
wonderfully personal single family residences, and numerous
commissions on the UC San Diego campus including the iconic
Geisel Library.
Kevin’s innovative and thoughtful design work have been widely
published and recognized for being rooted in a meaningful
connection to place, the optimal selection of materials, common-
sense sustainability, and a strong visual presence. Kevin was
honored with the national Young Architect Award by the American
Institute and later inducted as a Fellow.
Kevin greatly enjoys live music, a meal with just about anybody,
laughing out loud, and sharing stories; true or otherwise.
