Episode #72: How to Maximize Your Team’s Strengths at Work
Welcome to THE CAREER ACCELERATOR, the podcast where corporate managers will find tips and tools to deliver results through others.
Hello. Today I will share tips on how focusing on your strengths can maximize the business results of your team.
I’m your host, Percy Cannon.
In our last episode I shared tips on how focusing on your strengths can maximize your individual business results. I built on a series of positive experiences I’d had this year related to the CliftonStrengths model.
There were three key concepts on this model that I covered:
1. This model was developed on a Strengths-Based Philosophy. CliftonStrengths focuses on helping people identify their top strengths and using them in their personal and professional lives.
2. The CliftonStrengths assessment identifies your top five leadership talents out of 34 possible themes, as they are called. Each theme represents a naturally recurring pattern of leadership-related thought, feeling, or behavior.
3. The 34 CliftonStrengths themes are categorized into four “buckets,” or domains. These four domains indicate how you lead best and how you are productively wired. They are:
a. Executing: getting things done
b. Influencing: promoting, advocating, inspiring, and motivating others
c. Relationship Building: connecting with people on a human level
d. Strategic Thinking: analyzing possibilities and creating a vision
CliftonStrengths from Gallup is widely used in organizations for leadership development and team building and to improve workplace culture.
Within team scenarios, CliftonStrengths is best used when connected to a specific challenge or opportunity you are trying to solve.
For this purpose, Gallup has created the “Five Truths of a Strong Team” model. It represents the key characteristics that differentiate high-performing teams from average ones. These insights, drawn from extensive research on workplace dynamics and team performance, highlight what makes certain teams excel in productivity, collaboration, and long-term success. Understanding and applying these truths can help organizations build teams that are resilient and motivated, and aligned with larger goals.
1. The first truth is: Conflict Does Not Destroy Strong Teams Because Strong Teams Focus on Results. One of the most distinguishing traits of high-performing teams is their ability to navigate conflict constructively. Conflict is inevitable in any group setting, especially where diverse CliftonStrengths talents and strong personalities come into play. However, strong teams don’t shy away from disagreements. Instead, they embrace conflict as an opportunity to grow and find better solutions. The reason conflict doesn’t derail these teams is their firm commitment to collective results. Rather than focusing on personal victories or being "right," team members are united in their shared goal of delivering common results. This shared focus helps keep disagreements productive and prevents them from becoming divisive.
2. Strong Teams Prioritize What’s Best for the Organization and Then Move Forward. Connected with the previous truth, high-performing teams consistently prioritize the organization’s broader goals over individual or departmental concerns. They understand that their success is tied to the company’s as a whole. This mindset fosters a spirit of collaboration and unity across different functions and diverse CliftonStrengths talents within the team. When difficult decisions are made, strong teams ensure that what’s best for the organization takes precedence. Even when internal disagreements arise, once a decision is reached, team members commit fully to its execution. This ability to align quickly and move forward with focus and determination is a characteristic of strong teams.
3. Members of Strong Teams Are as Committed to Their Personal Lives as They Are to Their Work: I know this one is easier said than done. Still, another key insight from Gallup’s research is that members of high-performing teams tend to have well-rounded lives outside of work. These individuals are as engaged in their personal lives as they are in their professional roles. This work-life balance contributes to their ability to sustain high levels of performance over time. Team members who are fulfilled in their personal lives bring a sense of well-being, energy, and perspective to their work. Strong teams support this balance, recognizing that personal fulfillment leads to increased motivation, focus, and productivity in the workplace.
4. Strong Teams Embrace Diversity. Gallup’s research shows that teams made up of individuals with different talents, backgrounds, and perspectives perform better because they bring a broader range of ideas to the table. The diversity of CliftonStrengths themes and domains fuels innovation by encouraging teams to look at problems from multiple angles, rather than falling into groupthink or relying on a single perspective.
For example, team members who have strong Strategic Thinking talents may insist on starting with a clear vision of what the ideal solution should be. Influencers may try to persuade others to their preferred alternative, and people who have robust Executing talents will focus more on “landing” the chosen option. Throughout the decision-making process, team members with solid Relationship Building skills may try to maintain productive interactions and avoid personal attacks.
By valuing and incorporating diverse perspectives, these teams are better equipped to solve complex problems, adapt to change, and develop creative solutions.
5. Strong Teams Are Magnets for Talent: Last, but not least, high-performing teams naturally attract top talent. Their strong sense of purpose, focus on results, and collaborative culture make them highly attractive to professionals who are looking for challenging and engaging environments. People are drawn to teams that have a reputation for success, and strong teams often become a magnet for talent. This creates a positive cycle: talented individuals are eager to join teams that are high-performing, and once they do, they contribute to the team's continued success. Moreover, strong teams are also able to retain talent because they offer an environment where people feel valued, challenged, and aligned with the organization's mission, regardless of which set of CliftonStrengths talents they bring to the group.
Summarizing, the “Five Truths of a Strong Team” provides a framework for building teams that are capable of sustained high performance. These truths highlight that it’s not just individual talent that matters but how team members collaborate, leverage the different CliftonStrengths themes and domains present in the team, and support one another in achieving common goals. Through the application of these principles, organizations can cultivate teams that consistently outperform expectations and drive long-term success.
