Episode #79: Command & Control or Trust & Inspire in 2026?
Welcome to "The Career Accelerator," the podcast where corporate managers will find tips and tools to deliver results through others.
Hello, I’m your host, Percy Cannon. Today we’re tackling a big leadership question for the year ahead: Will you exercise a Command & Control style, or will you practice Trust & Inspire in 2026?
In our last episode, I shared how the concept of an “Emotional Bank Account,” from Stephen Covey’s bestselling book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, can help address teamwork dysfunctions.
Just as financial investments grow over time, so do emotional investments. Regular deposits of appreciation and support are key to maintaining a healthy Emotional Bank Account with team members.
By applying the principles of the Emotional Bank Account to the five dysfunctions of a team, teams can cultivate trust, healthy debate, commitment, accountability, and focus, elevating their performance and giving them a competitive advantage in the market.
Today, I will outline the key differences between two leadership styles, Command & Control and Trust & Inspire.
Which style do you think is going to win in 2026? Which one will be better for attracting and retaining talent? And which will define the organizations that thrive in the future?
As we step deeper into a world shaped by AI, hybrid work, and rising expectations from employees, there’s a challenge we can’t ignore:
Will the way we led in the past get us to where we need to go next?
That’s what Stephen M.R. Covey addresses in his powerful book Trust & Inspire.
Why does this decision matter now?
Command & Control has been the dominant leadership style for generations. It’s rooted in productivity, efficiency, and compliance. It made sense in factories, where roles were repetitive and predictability was king.
But in 2026, our challenges are different:
• We need innovation, not just output.
• We need adaptability, not just execution.
• We need passion, not just presence.
People aren’t looking for bosses anymore, they’re searching for leaders who believe in them, trust them, and inspire them.
And what happens when they don’t find that? They disengage, burn out, or simply leave, sometimes quietly, sometimes for good.
Organizations now face new leadership choices:
Will they manage through Command & Control, which is based on:
· Rules and pressure
· Supervision
· Fear of mistakes
· Short-term compliance
Or will they manage through Trust & Inspire, which is centered on:
· Purpose and partnership
· Empowerment
· Space to grow
· Long-term commitment
Can you recognize how the Command & Control style extracts effort, while Trust & Inspire unlocks potential?
In 2026, potential is the currency of success. Covey takes that concept and proposes a simple idea with a profound impact:
“People have greatness inside them. Leadership is about unleashing that greatness.”
Trust & Inspire leaders start with three beliefs:
1. People are creative, not just productive.
2. People are whole: body, heart, mind, and spirit.
3. There is enough for everyone: success multiplies.
Those beliefs lead to different behaviors that invite people to grow.
Covey outlines three characteristics of great leadership in his book:
1. Model: Be the example. People don’t follow titles. They follow credibility. Authenticity. Humility. Courage. Consistency.
Your behavior sets the standard.
2. Trust: Extend it, and watch people grow, not blindly but wisely.
Covey calls it “Smart Trust”: High trustworthiness, clear expectations, and shared accountability. When people feel trusted, they show up differently. They take ownership. They innovate. They surprise us.
3. Inspire: Connect people to what matters. Inspiration isn’t hype. It’s meaning. Trust & Inspire leaders help people see the purpose behind the work, the difference they personally make, and the impact they can create. This is the energy source that fuels extraordinary results.
If Trust & Inspire is so effective, why isn’t it universal?
Because…
• Letting go feels risky.
• Old beliefs about people linger.
• We weren’t taught how to lead this way.
But consider this rationale: When you trust people, you don’t lose control, you share ownership. And that elevates results.
Think about the challenges ahead:
• Rapid market shifts
• AI transforming roles
• Multi-generational, hybrid workforces
• Employees demanding growth, well-being, and purpose
These aren’t problems Command & Control can solve. They are only solved by people who care and do so deeply.
And people care when they feel:
• Seen
• Trusted
• Inspired
• Needed
That’s what Trust & Inspire leadership delivers.
When you Model, Trust, and Inspire, you create a positive cycle:
· Model builds trust
· Trust builds empowerment
· Empowerment builds commitment
· Commitment builds results
· Results build confidence
· Confidence builds more trust & inspiration
That’s how high-performing cultures sustain success, year after year.
In my more than four decades of corporate work, first inside as an executive and now as an external coach, I have worked with leaders who displayed different elements of both styles.
Even though it was in the ‘80s, I still remember one of my first managers already modeling several Trust & Inspire behaviors. With less than a month on the job, he asked me to travel to a city where our business was underperforming and empowered me to make several decisions without asking for his explicit approval.
Contrast this with the advice I received later in my corporate career. I had to present the state of the business and growth plans to senior management. This other manager told me that success in these business reviews was dependent on getting in and out of the meeting room as soon as possible, as there was little upside and plenty of downside risk of having senior management question my plans. These were mostly Command & Control type of interactions.
So, what’s your leadership choice for 2026? Will you try to control people into greatness, or believe them into greatness?
Will you manage compliance, or champion commitment?
Will you be the leader who holds people down with oversight, or lifts them up with trust?
The future has already chosen its winning style.
The question is, have you?
Summarizing, “Command & Control or Trust & Inspire in 2026” is more than a catchy title, it’s the leadership crossroads of our time.
Those who choose Trust & Inspire will build workplaces where people thrive, creativity flows, and potential turns into performance.
Thank you for joining me in this episode of THE CAREER ACCELERATOR. If this message resonates, share it with a leader who’s ready for what’s next. And as you head into 2026, ask yourself:
How can I Trust & Inspire today? That one question can transform your leadership, and someone else’s future.
