Being told you're a gifted child growing up because you did well on a couple tests when you were 6 sets an unrealistic expectation for what life will be. Not all of us are academics with the retention skills to pass tests with 80% every time. This is not only draining, it also sets us up to believe we are nothing more than the grade on our paper.
Along with the fact that so many parents base their love and affection off the performance of their children proves that love is transactional based off academic success, conditioning us to believe that academics and consistently performing to a high standard in one area of our life is essential, inevitably leading to burnout in later life.
Some of us are academics, some of us are not, and our worth shouldn't be based on how well we perform but who we are and the qualities we hold.
