This week, I'm joined by Jay for a conversation that starts with archery and ends somewhere completely unexpected.

We break down what it really costs to get into archery, why you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on your first setup, and how beginners can build a quality bow package without breaking the bank. We also discuss choosing your first bow, avoiding the gear rabbit hole, and why practice matters far more than having the latest equipment.

Then... the conversation takes a turn.

After discovering we're both fans of Power Rangers, Star Wars, and other classic nerd culture, we go completely off script and dive into some of our favorite childhood memories and fandoms. It turns into one of the most genuine and entertaining conversations we've had on the podcast.

Whether you're a seasoned bowhunter, someone looking to buy your first bow, or just a fellow 90s kid who grew up watching the Green Ranger morph into action, there's something here for you.

Hey tonight we have another uh exciting show. You know, I'm still on my series where I've been combing the TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook streets, uh trying to find, you know, uh new creators, um, finding people that are you know getting getting into Archery or you know, people that's been in the game for a long time. And uh tonight I got a guest, you know, we finally was able to get our schedules worked out. And I'm I'm I'm interested to see what he uh see see what what he think about Archer. You know, he's been doing it for about a about a year. I think he started last September. And uh just kind of pick his head and see what he thinks about it. So uh without further ado, I'm gonna introduce you guys to Jay. He's also he's also the uh the content creator on TikTok, Arrow by Arrow. Uh what up, Jay? What's up, brother? How you doing, man? Bruh, I'm good, man. Uh just got my got my new bow yesterday finally set up. Oh shooting it, and man, I'm I'm loving it, man. I'm loving it. Well, what'd you get? I got the uh Elite Veros. Okay. Yep. So uh I a couple months ago, I what you call it, um ended up I ran into one of the the VPs and we got the talking and whatever, and um he was like, Hey man, we we love for you to know you know shoot with us trial stuff out. So I was like, cool. They sent me a Veros, and man, I it's it's literally been sitting in the corner of my office. Because like where I live, I don't have an archery shop, and I'm I don't know how to set any of that stuff up. I'm learning, I'm in the process of learning.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So uh one of my buddies he finally got his shop set up at home. So I took it over there yesterday and we got it set up, and oh my goodness, man. Feel good, don't it? It feels good, bro. It feels good. I mean, I I will say, I will say this like I've been a Matthews guy. My ever since I picked up a bow, I've been a Matthews guy. Okay, um, it's different, but it's a good, it's a good bow. Like, yeah, I'm not one of those guys that's like hey, Matthews is the end all be all. Like at this point, I do believe that every company makes a good bow. As a consumer, you're just figuring out which one you like, what like which one fits you. I totally agree, man.

SPEAKER_03

I you know what's funny? I get asked that a lot when I go live. They're just like, you know, I'm always hoy, or I'm always uh Matthews, I'm always bear, I'm always just and I'm like, I'm never brand specific. Because at the end of the day, each bow does one thing all the same. They shoot an arrow. Yep. Now, obviously, one's gonna be better than the other, but they all shoot the, they they do the same. And so, like, if Matthews was to come contact me and say, they want to send you a brand new bow, well, by all means, I'm gonna shoot it. And I'm gonna shoot as much as I can. So I just got a hoit because that was the first thing I got, and I was like, it works for me. But I shot different brands, um, but this one just felt familiar to me. So uh yeah, I don't, I'm never like diehard specific. And when I run into those people that are very diehard specific, I'm just like, I mean, if if hoit was to contact you and say, hey, we want to send you a brand new uh Carbon RX 10, you're not gonna be like, oh no.

SPEAKER_00

Never. I'm like, uh yeah. Here's my address.

SPEAKER_03

Right, right, right. Go ahead and send that over and uh anything else we want to send uh with it.

SPEAKER_00

So oh exactly, man. Um I I've I used to be like that. Like, I'm not even gonna lie to you. When I first got into it, uh, I was like, man, I'm I want Matthews, I want Matthews. But the shop that I went to, um, the owner of it, Kim, he's one of those guys that he's gonna tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear. And hey, look, man, he goes, You've never shot a book before. He goes, Would I love to sell you a brand new Matthews decked out? He goes, Yeah, because I put money in my pocket. He said, But I wouldn't do it right as a as a as a person knowing I just sold you something that you might not like. And spent he goes, it's an investment, right? So I actually started out. He goes, If you want a Matthews, you know, the next best thing to it to get into it and still have the Matthews name is Mission. Mission is owned by Matthews. So I was like, Oh, okay, it was like, all right, whatever. That's that's dope. And I and I still have that bow. I love it. Shot that bow for a year, and as soon as I felt like I was proficient with it, I went and got me a Matthew. Got you Matthew. I like that. But he was like that, he goes, the bow will pick you. He goes, No, he goes, anytime anybody come in the shop, I want them to shoot multiple brands. Like I get it. You want you know, you see Matthew, you see the advertising, you see Hoyt, you see the advertising, you know. That's what that's that's what all that's is there for to bring down. He goes, but as a shop owner, I want you to shoot three to four different brands and then pick because he goes, I've had people come in here that's diehard hoyt. By the time they left, they were shooting a PSC, and vice versa. So, like, yeah, just go in with an open mind and and really give every bo a try. And if you brand new to it, you don't even know what you're looking for anyway. Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

And I think I had that same mindset when I walked in, and I didn't go to a pro shop, I went to Shields because I'm like Shields is 10 minutes from me. And so I go there and and you know, for one, I'm a brother walking into, I feel like a uh a sport and a section that I have. I don't see too many brothers there. And I was very overwhelmed, and I'm like, okay, I don't need top of the line. I just need something to get me into it so I can figure out this is what I want to continue to do. And so um, man, I asked a guy, and he I was just like, hey, I'm new to it. What do you think? And he's like, look at these different brands, um, and and see if they have like a budget bow and seem to have something, you know, in your price range, and then go from there. And he's like, you know, Matthews and all these topics. He goes, don't even look at that. And I was like, okay. So he he recommended me bear. Uh I I picked that one up, kind of grew back, tried a couple of those, and I was like, man, that feels good. And then try the Torex, and then I was like, okay, I like that too. So yeah, I I will say I was nervous going to like a big, you know, sports store like that, because you know, like you said, they want to, yeah, hey, come get this $3,000 Matthews.

SPEAKER_00

I'm sure they get it some kind of commission. I guess I think they they they are they work on commission. Or pay rate. But um what you call it? That's that that's a sign of a good a good shop. If they if you go in and they and you come back out, you he go in looking for a bow and they're like, hey, look, man, go check these out first. Oh, keep on. I'm I'm here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but yeah, so uh like that sounds a good shop. But before we get deep into it, let the people know who you are and what you do.

SPEAKER_03

So again, I'm Jay. My name is Jamare, uh, but I go by Jay because my first name is uh hard to pronounce to new people that uh first meet me. So I just go by Jay. Um yeah man, I'm 30 years old. Um I've been doing archeries, like I said, like you said, September of last year. Uh, and I've been obsessed with it ever since. I I get I get irritated when work gets in the way of me trying to shoot. That's how much uh of an addiction it is for me. Um I needed a hobby, a new hobby outside of work to kind of you know release from stress. And uh, you know, ammo is so expensive here, and I was like, man, I need something else. And you know, I couldn't rock climb as much as I could because I don't, I'm not close to a rock climbing gym anymore. And I just needed something to do. So I tried archery out, and man, I've just been obsessed with it. So uh with that, I decided to record myself to see what I'm doing, if I'm doing the same thing, kind of just you know, watch myself, and then it just turned into me creating content, and it's just been steady ever since, man. That's you know, it's just crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, I I love seeing it, man. When I first got into this, I didn't see a lot of brothers shooting archery at all. And and I and I'm not saying that they weren't doing it, it was just like you know, my algorithm wasn't sending it to me. Uh well at that time it wasn't sending me any archery content, it was all like sports and cooking stuff. So once I really started getting into it, I'm like, man, like, am I the only brother doing this? So right, right. I literally went to Instagram and typed in black archers, and one dude came up. I was like, hmm. So me and him connected, but then like I started following him, and then as as more archery content started, you know, popping up, dude, I started doing some mines cats all over the country. All over, and it's crazy, man.

SPEAKER_03

Like, so where I'm from, man, like archery wasn't talked about, it wasn't in school, it wasn't in none of that, man. Like, I am from the ghetto. So it's like that that wasn't talked about. And so, um, yeah, man, when I when I just scrolling through TikTok and I seen a black female shooting, and I was like, wow. Like I had I was sitting 15 minutes on her page. It's like, wow, this is crazy. And then I think you were one of the man, like early people to follow me and like reach out uh when I first started doing it. And it was just like, you know, when you read and you're like, oh, okay, that person just, you know, whatever, you know, you know, they just reach out, blah, blah, blah. You don't really think anything of it. But then, you know, as time went on, you know, you you comment or you, you know, whatever, and then more people start doing it. And then like I go live, and people are like, man, it's good to see, you know, another brother, you know, doing it, you know. And it's just like, yeah. To the point where I made a video one time and I was just like, man, I'm just sitting here brainstorming. I'm like, I love to see, you know, whether you're black, white, red, green, whatever, but I love to see people doing arts in general, but I see females doing it, whether you're black or white. You know, I see, you know, us doing it. I got somebody else that got locks doing it, and I got tattoos. I'm like, it's just crazy to see somebody that looked like me doing it. Uh, and then I was like, okay, you know, I want to start hunting. People, you know, uh, somebody at work was like, yeah, my uncle used to hunt, da da da da. I'm like, wow. It's just crazy to see it. It's a good feeling to see. Um people just enjoying it, man.

SPEAKER_00

That's when they look like us. Oh, exactly. See, I'm I'm from the South. So like in Texas. So like I grew up, I had uncles, I had uh cousins. Hell, my dad even hunted, but if for some odd reason, he like that he didn't want that, like, I don't want this life for y'all. Because I would beg like like him and my mom weren't together when I was growing up. So, like, whenever I go to his house, especially during like hunt season, he'd be like, Hey, um, cookie breakfast, sit here, watch TV, I'll be back in three, four hours. I'm like, I want to go, and he's like, Nah, you know, you ain't you you you don't want this life. And so I didn't know like, what are you what are you doing? Right, are you going to war out there? So I'm like, man, come on. And um, it's like he would never take me and my little brother at all. It was like, nope. I remember one time he like the first time I can remember he came on with a deer, and I'm like, Oh man, this is you know, you're young, you're playing with the ear, you know, deer's hanging up on a little uh little posting he had, and I was like, Yeah, I want to go and do that. And he and he didn't, he like I said, he didn't want us a part of it, so uh I just kind of venture off into sports, but like I said, I grew up seeing people like us do it, but it was it was like taboo because like even like our family members that didn't do it talk shit about them, like oh, they link country ass, they go under in the woods, get them deer. I'm like, like what's wrong with that? What's wrong with that? But as a kid, you like well, if people talking bad about it, it must not be cool. So, you know, I go and do my do my own thing. But like, as I've had this podcast and I've talked to people from you know uh Chicago, New York, up in California, like we didn't know nothing about this. Like growing up, I didn't we didn't hear about people hunting, we didn't know who the boat was, like nothing, none of that stuff. And I'm like, man, like that's wild.

SPEAKER_03

It's it's sad too because I I outside of archery and you know, I haven't hunted yet, but outside of all that, that realm of things, I like being outside. I like being out. Uh, I like to go camping. And, you know, I have a Jeep, and me and my homies, we go out, and we take the Jeep on the trails, just camp, just sit around the fire and relax it. And I think, well, there's nothing better than just being outside with nature, God's creation. And so take that part and put it in the archie is just like, I can't imagine. I I'm very excited to be out there and just hear nothing but nature. And if when you say that, part of me thinks it's like, did your your dad probably felt that? And he's like, man, maybe kids might not, maybe kids might not ruin it, but you know what I mean? Like, kind of, you know, don't, I got this, I got this setup, I got this, I got this this routine, I got all this. You know, I don't want this, I don't want the outside to come in. So maybe that could have been it. But I feel like just besides killing something and just being out there and being a part of nature and taking in everything that we may take for granted is just, I mean, that's I can't wait. You know, and I and I enjoy just being out there in general, you know. That to me, that's the best part about it.

SPEAKER_00

Um a couple years ago, I was in Colorado with my buddy Rex, and we were elk hunting, and we're we're up early in the morning, we're sitting and just kind of waiting for the sun to come up. And I remember like I dozed off, and when I woke up, it was it was bright out. I was sitting on the side of that mountain and looking over, like down into this valley. Yeah, I'm like, holy smokes, man. Like, dude, we we like the first people up here, you know. I I mean, I know in my head we're not really the first people to ever see this view, but what if man, look, look at this. And it's it's quiet, and and you're outside when nature starts to wake up, so the birds are purping, you start hearing stuff move around, you're like, okay, like this is what it's all about, and it's it's it's a piece to it. It's it's a piece to it. So I that's probably why my pops wouldn't take us. He's probably like, Man, look, man, he got ADHD, he he his ass isn't quiet.

SPEAKER_03

He's like, I'm telling you, man, it's like he's like, Man, this is this is my piece, this is my zen. And I don't want to be asked no questions, I don't want to be what's that? I don't want you know, so yeah, yeah. But hey, that's funny.

SPEAKER_00

We ended up uh, I actually uh end up it's kind of everything came full circle because when I was I was like 28, and I this is like um the girl I was dating at the time, her family had all this land, and they were like, Hey, you can go out there and hunt, do whatever you want to do, you know. Say if you want to invite your dad or brother up, feel free. Um and my brother didn't hunt, and but I knew my dad did, so I'm like, Well, it's like call my dad, I'm like, Hey dad, you want to come to South Dakota and hunt with me? And then he's like, Is uh is Nick coming? That's my brother. I'm like, I don't know. I asked him, so I asked him, he was like, Yeah, he don't hunt. So he was like, Man, I don't hunt, but I'll like give me a rifle, I'll get a tag, let's do it. Yeah, they came up, man, and I'm sitting there in the blind, and I'm like, dude, I'm 28 years old. I feel like a little kid in hunting with my dad because he's just like like like down in Texas, man, we we see some nice deer, but it's very far in between in South Dakota. But there's some big deer just walking around on the regular, and he was just like, Oh, oh, and I'm like, calm down. We here for a week, man. That's week. Let's take our time and pick something out. Look at boy, I ain't never found no recipe for no anthropology. I don't care about no. And there was uh there was a a doe in front of the blind. She's probably like 10 yards in front of the blind, and it and then that blind, I had a rock, and I don't know why the rock was in there. He was like, Man, I could take this rock and bust in the back of the head right now. She's so popped as crazy, man. But we actually ended up getting. I mean, he shot, he shot his biggest ever shot in his life. It was uh who I think that's he ended up scoring 172.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, okay, see, and those those scoring, man. That that I you know again, I haven't hunting yet, but I keep hearing about the scores and the point, you know. It ain't fair, yeah, it's not a fair system.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah, it's something to do with the antlers, right? Yeah, they measured the inches, and so like you got a a green score, which means like you just you just killed that deer like that day, and then you got what they call a dry score, which is it's been able to it was dead for a while, so now it's kind of I guess there's no blood circulating through it or whatever. It's is it's dried out, what they call it. Then they go through, they measure the from the the spread, so from tip to tip, outside tips, and then they measure each uh each time the G5, G1, and all that stuff, and then got any um then they start adding they start taking away deductions. I don't know how the deductions work. The deductions piss me off because that deer grew with it, that deer grew. If it's this G5 just grew a little bit to the left, hey man, that's nature, that's God's work. But then they'll take a deduction off for it, and then if it's got so many abnormal times, then it's it goes into the non-typical class. It's not fair because you can actually have a deer score like 205, but after deductions, it might be like 180, which is still a good deer. But man, give me give me my points back. So, what's the point of getting high points? Uh, like but the what's the point? Just to say I got a big deer, it goes towards the record book. So, like if you say like right now, the the world record book was shot by Milo Hansen, and I think it was like 216 and the fourth or something like that. And if you ever get a chance, go look up the Milo buck, it was shot up in Saskatchewan. And bro, when I tell you a perfectly symmetrical deer, everything is perfect on both sides. Wow, yeah. I've actually seen it in person. Well, I've seen a replica in person, I haven't seen the actual real deer, and I was like, the pictures don't do it no justice. You you see it in person, you're like, holy smokes, which cabela's just bought it for like two million dollars, the actual real amount. So I'm sure they'll start having replicas put in all the cabela's, but um it's really it's for bragging rights, if you want to be honest. Okay, I mean, unless if you unless you're one of those guys that you are chasing the world record, man, it it really don't matter. If you my thing is if you see a deer and you like it and yet it's going and you and you think it'll look good on your wall, take them. Yeah, okay. Like, don't don't worry about the score, man.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I've been hearing that a lot lately. The more I scroll through all my feeds, man. It's like, they're like, are you are you hunting for for food or are you hunting for, you know, trophy-wise, and it's just like, you know, some people are like, oh no, I want to shoot anything that's not this or you know, or that, you know. Um, some people just like, uh, I mean, if it looks big enough, it's gonna feed the family. I'm shooting it. Yeah. And so yeah, I mean, I maybe I'm saying it because I'm I'm new and I haven't done it yet, but for me, it's like, yeah, if I see it, it's it's it's gonna put meat in the freezer, why not? But again, I'm sure that change that perspective changes as time goes on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's uh to me, it's like if you um it's like somebody that's been playing sports for a long time. Like if you want them cats that you know, say you play in the NFL, if if you've never won a Super Bowl, you're trying to win a Super Bowl, right? But if you like, you know, a cat that's got one or two, well, I ain't too much worried about the Super Bowl. I'm now worried about getting these big contracts. I already got my bowls. Now I'm just trying to hunt. So that's kind of how it is with hunting. You know, if you if you kill something like big, okay, I've I've got it out of my system now. Now I'm more focused on you know, either getting more mature bucks or just putting meat in the freezer. Yeah, you know, I got a that he's he's been hunting since he was 10. He's like, dude, I've killed everything. You know, I feel like I've killed my I'm never gonna shoot a deer bigger than I shot when I was 25 years old. He says, So now my whole thing is I'll take a dough. Now if I see a buck that tickles my fancy, he's gone. But he goes, I have no problem getting a dough. And that's kind of where I'm at. Like, I have I've killed one really nice buck. Do I want something bigger? Yeah, but now I'm more so want to learn more about the sport as far as like you know different strategies in the wood, what works, what don't work, you know, how to find and track them down on a regular reconsider. Consistently harvesting something. You know, it's cool to get a deer every, you know, every other season or every two seasons. I want to start getting getting and seeing deer consistently every time I go out. So that's what I'm trying to learn. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Now, would you say you're one of those that like eventually wants to like um it's probably not the best example, but like a like a I know a lot of mixed feelings about it, but let's just say Josh Beaumore. You know, you if you watch him, like him, hear him, whatever. But like you see him, he and they go for like these just crazy animals, you know. And uh are you one of those that like I want to go in the safari, huh? I want to go hunt what giraffe, or it's just some crazy stuff like that. Are you one of those that eventually do that, or it's just not I I don't feel the need for me, and again, I haven't done it yet, but for me, just looking on the odds, I was like, if I'm not gonna eat it, why shoot it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's just to put it on my walls, like so I I've I've had somebody ask me that before, and I actually had a lady on my podcast that she goes over and volunteers at a um at a lodge over in Africa that does safari hunt and stuff like that. And I was like, why would I go over there and shoot something that I'm not gonna be able to bring back any of the meat? I'm paying basically I'm paying to go hunt, and then I'm gonna kill something to only get a bill. And she was like, Yeah, but you know, those guides over there, they are people from the local villages. So you go over there and say you shoot a giraffe, you know, that those your guides and um the people that help out on the lodge, they're from the like I say, like a local tribe. So they get the meat. So it's like, okay, so the Americas, Americans going over and hunting over in Africa, it's actually it's an economy booster for them. So like a lot of people that live in these villages, you know, say you got a family of five, the dad that works for one of the local um hunting operations, you know, he's gonna make sure that you have a good time because if you tip well, then that's that means you know what I'm saying, he can afford to take care of his family, you know. And then if he gets you something, well, he knows that meat is going to his village and it's gonna feed them for, you know, I'm saying, months. So okay, so I could do it one time. I go over there and hunt, cool. I, you know, as far did my part. I gave back something economy, but I'm I don't have like I'm not in a rush to get Africa to hunt. Like it's like I said, I'm more of I want to eat something.

SPEAKER_03

I want to get yeah, it's like the it's like the bears, man. I I saw it in uh um co videos and like when we were shooting bears and stuff like that, or these lions. Now I know sometimes some of that is just uh I know like what they say, like male giraffes will will kill off a lot of the population, so they you know make sure they're not they kill them to make sure they're not killing other giraffes. So I get that for population control and all that stuff, but um, yeah, I don't know, man. I just I mean I don't I don't I I mean to hang on the wall, okay, yeah, cool, but I'm just like I'm not gonna eat it, but I don't feel the need. But the way you explain it, yeah, I probably would. That's that's a good idea to help out, help them out, and and you know, I would do that. Yeah, I would definitely do that.

SPEAKER_00

But um, yeah, I I I got no like the experience, it's one of the things I experienced it one time, and I'm and I'm good. I never have to you know do it again. But I know guys come over there every year and they love it because you can go shoot a lot of stuff for cheap. Like I I ran into this one guy uh at the Iowa Dick Classic, and for like five thousand dollars, you can go get a gazelle, a black buck, a warthog, um a zebra, and something else he said. And I'm like, holy smokes! But your you know, your ticket getting you know to your flight over there is probably gonna be like you know, 1,500 you know, bucks. And then once you get all those animals, well now you're looking at a probably a seven, eight thousand dollar tax dermy bill.

SPEAKER_01

I'm good. I'm good.

SPEAKER_03

There's plenty of stuff to hunt here. Like I can go travel to different states and just be just fine. You know, yeah, no, I'm good.

SPEAKER_00

So so what what made you want to um, you know, you picked up the boat, but what made you want to actually go out and hunt?

SPEAKER_03

Um I think what's inspired me is just watching other people do it. Um and so, you know, I watched Ty Jordan a lot. He's one of the creators that I watch. Um before kind of when I was thinking about getting an archery. And um I was like, you know, man, this guy's hunting. He makes it look, he makes it look fun, he makes it look enjoyable, he makes it look like you can just do it. And it's a learning thing. And that's it, you know, and it and it also looked like there's good people out there to that is in it with, you know. So I was like, okay, that's that's a plus. And so um, you know, it's just been on my mind ever since. I'm like, okay, you know, I can go out and shoot my bow on a target all day long, but I want to experience, you know, preparing for that. I want to experience uh getting myself ready to go out there and see if I can put what I've learned to, you know, put in the work and see if I can reap the benefits of it. And so on top of, I could I get to be outside and be enjoying being outside like I like I like. And if I get to harvest some some meat from it, then you know, why not? And you know, people that, you know, my my you know, I was like I said, watching Ty Jordan and then my buddy of mine who has done elk hunting, who's gone deer hunting, who's done all that, you know, shot their bows, and that's when I was like, I mean, the immediately, man, when I shot, I was like, I turned and looked back, I was like, oh yeah. I said, oh yeah, I'm I'm hooked. I went to Shields the next day and bought the bow. I said, oh yeah. And it just, it only took me to shoot it one time. I was from me watching Ty Jordan to literally like a week later, me shooting my buddy's bow. I I looked back and I said, Oh yeah. It was a Saturday night. I went back that Sunday, uh, left work early, went to went home, changed, went to Shields, bought the ball.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, it do it do something to you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, immediately. I said, Oh yeah. Immediately. I I think I didn't need to shoot another arrow. I didn't need to, hey, let me shoot chill bow. No, I shot it. I literally shot it. I think I had a photo of what that that night. I shot it and went back. Went to shields the next day, bought the bow. Didn't hook some shit. No, I didn't, yeah. So so me, man, like if I want something, I will I will think about it and I will look every video up on it until I go by it, or until I just go look at it. I don't know why I do that. I will research and research and research, look at every possible video video on the internet before I go buy it. And that's what I did, man. I just I was hooked. I mean hooked.

SPEAKER_00

I'm the same way. Like if I'm gonna buy something, man, I'm I'm reading everything I possibly can about that work thing. I gotta see what people are saying about it, you know, good and the bad. And then, you know what I'm saying? If I can go somewhere and test it out, I'm gonna go test it. I might not buy it that day, but I'll be back.

SPEAKER_01

I'll be back. Yep. I'm gonna sleep on it and then I'm gonna be back and find out, put the card down, go and give it to me.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, yep. And and I and if it's something like that where I want it, I don't want to order it. I want to go get it. Like I will drive and go get it if I need to, you know. But thankfully Shields is right there, and um, yeah, I I went and got it. So we set it up. We was I was probably there for about two, two and a half hours. Um, from them, from them pulling it off the shelf, me buying it, and we set it up. I was there for about two and a half hours and uh left there and then went shot some more, my buddy's house when I shot his bow. And uh I was like, oh my God, this is the best thing. You know, so yeah, I I I from until then it was cool because uh after that, it was a short time after that. I think I think I kind of got the idea is that that night when I went to go shoot my bow, they would record me. And and I was like, okay, you know, look at my new hobby. I kind of want to kill my mom's man, look what I got into, you know. And uh I was like, oh, maybe I can record myself, you know. Reached out to Ty Jordan, and I was like, hey man, you know, I know you probably never see this, but I've uh you kind of inspired me to get into it because I went from watching you, you know, I just started my own TikTok, you know, blah, blah, blah. And not even a minute later, he was like, bro, that's so great to hear. Love to hear it. Um, what are your socials? I'll follow you. And I'm like, there's no way. Like, you know, I've been watching this guy, you know, and so I was like, oh, here it is. And so, man, he's man's worry. He went and followed me on my socials. And uh commented on a couple videos and like a couple of them. I'm like, man, that's cool, man, that guys that are in the game that's hunting in and sponsored by all these top brands to be able to be like, take the time to be like, hey, there's somebody that's new to the game, um, and you know, give them a little bit of words of encouragement, and our support. And so that was that was cool. That was cool for me.

SPEAKER_00

But hey, it's it's funny you say that because um when you think of like our like if you're an archery, guys like Ty Jordan, uh Bo Mar, um John Dilly, those are like our pros. You know, our pros. But the crazy part about it is unlike other like pro sports, like I'm a I'm a LeBron fan. I couldn't get on, I can't get on Instagram or TikTok or whatever and mention LeBron and he mentions something back. Right. Exactly. It's never happening. But in our world, our stars are super accessible. Like, you know, I've reached out to Dan State and I've spoken to him, John Dudley. Like, these are guys you just message and it's like, oh yeah, and they talk to you and like we fanboy out sometimes. I know I saw Dudley attack and I fanboyed out, and my girl was like, Who is that? And I'm like, you don't know who that is. Yeah, right, right. But if you're not in, it's such a niche sport, if you're not in it, you just don't know.

SPEAKER_03

You don't know, yeah. And uh, you know, when he he commented on, actually he commented on the video for the A3. He got he commented on it, and uh I was a screenshot and said to my wife, I was like, hey, look, I was like, Ty Jordan, you know, comment on, you know, and I and I'm like, oh yeah, we're friends, you know. And you know, she was just like, who I was like, remember, that's the guy, you know, I watched. You know what's funny though? Um I've I sat there and I doom scrolled on his on his TikTok and Instagram and just watched all his old stuff. The man started, when you watch his old stuff from like what, 22, he really, he you could say he really didn't know what he was doing from what from now. The man just started recording and making videos, and people see his progression. Then he travels and stuff like that, and he just got better. You can see it. You it's like as a viewer, you're progressing with him. And I was like, I could do that, you know. Um, and I if I can do that and enjoy it, why not? And we'll see where God takes it. And so that's kind of I'm telling you, it was cool to see. I'm like, man, this dude, like, I mean, some of his first, like his early clips from three, four years ago was just like, it was rough. I was like, oh my God. You look at him now, he's like, man, this dude is like he can shoot. Like him and Bull Boy and Josh and B Mac and all those guys, like they can shoot. And so look, it's like, man, that guy just literally got out there and just shot. He shot, he communicated with other creators, and he just worked on his craft. And I'm like, if if he can do that, I can do that.

SPEAKER_00

And yeah, and and that's why guys like that, they just shoot up because when you when you as a as a viewer, if you feel like you're growing with the creator and they're very authentic, it's easy, it's easy to become a fan of that person. It's easy to watch them. And I've I've I there's a ton of guys like that that I've started watching, like, man, like we man, like I feel like we we started from the bottom, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm saying we but it's like as as I'm watching, I remember like when they got their first boat and I'm watching, you know what I'm saying? Or when they first started getting on TikTok or Instagram and they're posting and they're doing this and they're doing that, and you just kind of falling with them, and you know, it's like man, like now look where they at. And it and I think that's what sets content creators apart, you know, the the the good from the bad. Like some people they just they come in and already made, and yeah, they might make really great content, but if you're not relatable to the viewers, it's just not gonna stick.

SPEAKER_03

It's not gonna stick, man, because I can't relate to somebody that that okay, this is what promise you have to say, content creator. If you look at my my videos from last year, I didn't have the best mics. I was using my camp, my phone on the little tiny gimbal sitting on a TV tray because I was trying to get, you know, play with the angles, and I'm buying a cheap Chinese mic, and I, you know, now I progress now. I'm like, okay, I've invested in this, I've invested in that. Still, there's still things I want to get, but it's like I feel like me, I can if I if I was a match, hey, buy this $8,000 camera and you can make content create. That's not realistic. That's not realistic. But it's like, hey, I use my phone. If you look at my TikTok, I use but I pick my phone on a lot of those videos, and someone's like, what? I'm like, yeah, you'd be surprised how much an iPhone would take you miles away. You don't need the, and so I I like that you say that because you I agree, if you can be relatable, I think that draws people in. Because it's like, oh, I'm in that same boat, or uh, you know, hey, what's what's your budget for you know getting in the archery? Okay, well, I think it's this because this is doable. Yeah. And you know, and you may not even have to reach that, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, yeah, definitely being real, like I've had people reach out to me, and they're like, hey, dude, I really want to get into archery. Um, what's the best stuff I should get? And my first question is, man, what's your budget? What's your budget? Yeah, what's your budget? And you know, they'll they'll tell me, and I'm like, okay, you can these are some of the best bows in your bow range. And I was like, and stick to your budget. When you, if you know that you can't spend no more than $500 on a bow, stick to your budget. Don't like when you go into some archery shops, their job is to sell you. That's what they're there for. They're trying to make money, you know. So they want to sell you on the biggest and best thing. It is what it is, but stick to your budget and figure it out if you like it or not. If you do, then start, you know, saying branching out. Don't go with the like like what for me. I had a mention bow and I had just nice accessories on it, you know. Then I upgrade it. But you know, or I tell people if you because some people just feel like they gotta have a flagship bow. Got to or if you feel like you gotta have a flagship bow, well, you might you you can't afford this year's flagship bow, but you can afford the flagship bow from two years ago. So there's nothing wrong with a used bow. Get it, take it to a shop, have them look it over, change out the strings, yeah, look at the cams, all that stuff. Once they look it over and fine-tune it and bring it back to spec, it's a brand new boat. It's it's new to you. It's new to you. Yeah, so go out there and have fun with it. And a lot of guys, like, and I've since I've done this podcast, a lot of people have said, what, because I try to stir people to like, you know, the um budget-friendly bows, and they're like, no, man, tell them to go get a you know, uh, an old flagship, you know, uh year-old, two-year-old flagship. Or you can go get you a brand new, you know, mid mid-level bow. Right, right.

SPEAKER_03

And you know, I've I've said, um people ask me like on my lives, you know, like, you know, what's what how much did you spend starting off? Or, you know, what and I said, I've I just kind of stuck with a thousand dollars. And the reason why is because I said a thousand dollars can get you a really nice budget bow, all the accessories you need. Um, and you don't even have to come close to that sometimes. I said, you can go find a used bow, get all your accessories. Now, arrows and release, that's a giving. You don't have to all you gotta buy those, right? And so count those automatically as a as an add-on. But I said, you can go get all that stuff under a thousand. So if you know you can get everything for a thousand or less, just set it at a thousand. And if you spend 800 bucks and you get everything you need, now you got $200 left. You can set that aside for whatever you need. So I've just been saying a thousand bucks. I said, you know, I got my Hoit Torex with arrows, the release, it came with the the site, the quiver, the uh let's see, what else is it? The little stubby uh stabilizer and had the arrow rest on it. And man, I got everything for like like nine and some chains. I'm right at a thousand, you know, uh maybe just over with tax. But I was like, but there was other used bows that was like five, six hundred bucks, you know, and so you can go get a release for 80 bucks. You can go get a dozen arrows from shields for for 60 bucks, 60, 70 bucks. So I'm like, until you know that you like it and you're gonna continue with it, a thousand bucks, if you hit it, great. If you go less, even better. And so that's kind of what I've been sticking at. I'm like, that's just that's just kind of what I've what I did, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So that's the best thing to tell them. Yeah, that's the best thing. Like I said, stick to your budget. So, like, so as a new archer, like first get into it, did you fall into the the gear rabbit hole at the beginning? Ooh, good question.

SPEAKER_03

Um, no, no, uh, because I didn't want to spend no more money. Like, I did not, I did not want to spend no more money. Uh, so like for work, like I have a lot of gear for work. So I I I I just no, I did not want to jump down the rabbit hole just yet. Then when I was like addicted to it, I was like, okay, let me see what I can, let me see what I can do here. Let me see, let me see what my budget is. And so then I say probably a month or two in, I probably looked at another release because I was like, I did make a mistake when I got my first release. It was too at full draw, it was too long. Uh, and I needed to be shorter in my palms. So I did make that mistake. So that was a me mistake where I was like, okay, and I can't say I can return it, but I I never did. But um, I would say right off the rip, I did not get gear heavy. It was only when I was really shooting, man, I was shooting like every day almost. And not to the point I had to give my body a break, that I was like, okay, I'm obsessed with it. What else is out there? And I feel like I was probably two months in to where I was like, okay, I'll start looking. And I got a release, a little tape release, 100 bucks. I used it for about a week. It started to not be super comfortable, returned it, and then bought my first big thing, which was that um UVE thumb button. And then it just that's when I really started getting into gear, and I was like, oh man, uh Ty Jordan's using that. Boy boy, bull boy's using that. Uh I mean, okay, let me go look at Levi. What Levi uses? You know, so then I was just like, then it got me. Then it got me.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, but that that's the route to go. Because like normally when I talk to people that's first getting into it, they go straight from I got the bowl, and then they go down that gear rabbit hole. And that's like, bro, you're not even shooting. So you sound like you started shooting. Yeah, and that's and that's what you gotta do. Because I tell people, once you buy the bowl, next step, shoot. Shoot, shoot. Don't worry, don't worry about all don't. I mean, getting on YouTube and you're going down the arrow building rabbit hole, you're going down uh you know which site is better, which release. None of that stuff matters if you can't shoot. So just go and shoot. Shoot. And build those muscles up, man.

SPEAKER_03

Go take your go take your bow that you that you just bought, and and I hope it's set to to 55 pounds around there, because you don't need to be blowing your shoulder out. And go shoot and work those muscles. Okay. Um, and I I took I took homies that were bigger than me in size, and they uh took them to shield. I was like, hey, this is my guy, he worked at shield, shoot his belt. And it was set at 70. Mm-hmm. And trash. And I said, you know, I use it. It's the it's the technique and the muscle group that you're not using to push the pull. Go take your just stop. Erase all that. Drop that joke at the 55 pounds and go shoot. Build that, build that muscle. And then, like for me, I would put up a video of somebody that I know is a is is a respected archer and been in the game, and I would watch them, and I'm sitting there just shooting, and I'm like, okay, boom, let me, how they holding it? Okay, cool, let me shoot. Is it is it is it going where I want it to go? Okay, all right, am I looking at my pin or am I looking at the target? You know, um, okay, how's my grip? Okay, how's my level? Like, and then develop yourself a shot process, you know, as you start going on. And so, like, someone asked me in my life, how Do I get better? Shoot. That's it. Because I promise you, like, even if you're not doing the right technique per se, as long as you're consistently doing the same thing, you can diagnose it and fix it. You know? And so just shoot. Take your 55-pound bow and go shoot as much as you can. And if you if you realize, like, oh my God, I am addicted to this, okay, then maybe, maybe, just maybe start looking at some gear.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And everybody, everybody wants the um the quick fix. You know, they'll they'll go to the range and they'll shoot. And it, oh well, my my my bow's off, so I need a new rest. Oh, okay, this is off. I need a new therm release. It ain't none of that. It ain't the bow, it ain't the therm release, it ain't your error, it's it's you. Once you realize like my bow is tuned, you know, my form is, you know, I got you work on your form. That's that's that's it. And like me, I had um the guy that owned the shop I went to, I had him watch me. And he was one of the guys if if he said something to you, you knew you were messing up, but if he didn't say nothing to you, then you know you were doing right in front of the and he was you're doing this wrong, stop doing this. You know, he just he diagnosing everything. And me like when having him do that reminded me of golf. I used to play a lot of golf, and with golf, once you change one thing, you gotta change everything else. Everything, okay. That's how Archery is. So he was like, Oh, you know, you straighten your arm out, so you straighten your arm out. Oh, now this is messed up. You know, put your head up. It's like, come on, man. Right. But once you get it, you you figure it out. And um I just try to tell young cats to get into it, like, it's never the equipment, like it's always you go and shoot. And you know, some people say, Well, yeah, but if you're shooting wrong, you know, you're not gonna ever learn. Well, you're never gonna learn if you ain't shooting. So if you shoot, you notice like, okay, I I tend to be dropping my arm. The best thing you do is right here put this bad boy up and and what you call it, film yourself. Yep. You can film yourself and or have somebody do it where it's in like slow motion. When you see a high-speed camera on you, man, you can see a whole lot of stuff the naked eye can't see. Like, I used to drop my arm bad. And but I didn't feel like I was. And then once we did it in slow motion, I was like, oh man, like I'm releasing, and as I'm releasing, I'm dropping my arm. I wouldn't even, I didn't even notice that because it happened so fast. Right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And that's I think that's what I want to do. I was like, you know, I want to, if I'm gonna do this, I want to be the best I can be, you know, because I don't have anybody teaching me. I have somebody, you know, my buddy's kind of like, hey, this is what works for me. Da da da, because he's been hunting for a while. But that doesn't necessarily mean that that's the right way. I'm not saying it's the wrong way, but so I just like said, put my my camera up and I just started recording myself. Man, I got videos that I haven't even posted on TikTok or or on my Instagram because I just they was just early recordings of recording myself, or me talking into the camera, wondering, like, can I do this? You know? Uh, and it was just like, oh, okay. Like, for me, really, I feel like the good turning point for me to really start really loving it was when I was like, okay, I'm torquing my bow. Like, I would, I had a bad habit. I mean, I'm trying to give an example. Like, man, I was just grabbing this thing and I was like gripping it. Death grip. Yeah. And but I felt, but I felt like even when I had my fingers like this, I still felt like I was I was torquing it. And so, man, it took, it took me watching videos of myself to realize, like, hey, you're really, you're just that slight movement, you're torquing your bow at the end there. And so then I changed my grip up. And I was like, okay, let me try it. So now I try to keep these. Oh man, there was a good guy that gave me a good example. He was like, hey, you wanted to have it right up in here.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, on the other side of that lifeline. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

And when I watched that, I was like, oh. And I went to the range and I was out there for like two hours. And I changed my grip. And I was really like, okay, it feels weird at first, but then I started doing it and I was like, okay. And then I started recording myself and I watched it from just two weeks ago, and I was like, I see what I'm doing. And so you make a good point. Like you, you, you gotta, if and I feel like these are for the tips for people that actually want to continue on. Like, if you're just gonna pick the bow up and shoot it, you know, maybe I pick it up for six months, okay, disregard. But if you're if you shoot and and you and you're like me, or you and you're just like that light switch is turned on, shoot as much as you can and record yourself. Because then you like you said, you'll be like, Oh man, I'm gonna tweak it, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, and and shoot to get better, like uh right, right. I I I pick this up when I play football. My coaches would be like, Why are you like, Why are you in the gym today? And a lot of people would say, and I would say it too, well, because I need I I need to work out. Well, what are you what are you working on? Well, you put the workout on the board, I come in and do it, and I leave. So you you're not coming in here with a purpose, you're just coming here to get it done to say you did, and that's and I was so once I figured that out, like, okay, so I I'm coming in here because I know I got weak hamstrings, I need to work on my hands. All right, today's leg day, that's what I'm really focusing on. I just had shoulder surgery, so I need to get ready for the season. So, our upper body day, I'm really working on shoulder focus workouts to get the muscle back strong. You got to have that same mentality when you go into the range, all right. Yeah, I know I torque my bow a lot, so today when I go get these shots, I'm gonna make sure that I'm not torquing my bow. That's and that's the lesson for the day. Don't torque your bow. All right, every time I go to the range, man. I'm I I need to really find my anchor spot and really make sure I'm getting that consistent spot every single time. That's what you're focusing on. Make every rep count, you know, and I feel like a lot of guys go to the range because I used to do it. I'm just going to shoot to say that I shot. I'm not really learning anything from that day just to get my reps in. It's like, because shit reps are shit reps. So I want to make sure every rep counts. And um, and I think if people started doing that more, man, we did like you you if you start doing that, not you, but like anybody listening, you start doing that, you're gonna see you're you're gonna get more accurate and you're gonna get real comfortable with your boat real quick.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and I I think I fell into that category too for a while, where I was just like, I need to make content. Yeah, I'm gonna go shoot. I'm gonna go shoot. So then I set everything up and I I shoot and I do my whole thing, and then I get done. I'm like, all right, let's go home. And I'm like, bro, you probably shot 20 arrows. Yeah, you got your video, but did you really progress? And then I really started thinking about that. I'm like, no, I did not. Because I shot today, I shot on Monday, I got work, so then I may not get to shoot till Friday. Okay, well, I gotta make content. Go shoot Friday, I go make my content. It's like, bro, you spent two weeks. Yeah, you've shot maybe twice or three times this week, but what did you get to work on? You know, I got I got stuck in that I need to make content, oohaloop, and I'm like, okay, from now on, I'll set my camera up and I'll recall whatnot. Uh, but when I get there, um, I want to make sure I'm I'm I'm I want to shoot for me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I want to shoot for me. You know, more recently, I've been like, okay, I feel like I'm when I go, when I when I draw back and I get to the back wall, I'm like, okay, I feel like I'm dropping my shoulder. And I'm like, okay, now more recently in my videos, I feel like you see me when I come back to the draw, I'm really penetrate my. Yeah, and I'm I'm making sure that's what I've been doing, because I'm like, okay, I want to make sure this, this is this is tight, you know? And so that's what I've been trying to really focus on recently, is just when I got there, make sure I'm not dropping my, because I just I get latsy daisy. And with on my Torax, I can be Latsy Daisy because it won't, it won't, it won't, it won't jump on me. My H3, if I do that, it just feels like, and I'm like, I'm like, bro, just be a man and hold that both steady and shoot the shot. Like pull through your shot, you know. And so um, yeah, I don't I don't ever want to get to that point again where I was just going out there and make confident or gotta go make a video so I can post it on because I gotta be consistent. Uh, and then like, no, you I know personally I want to go out there because I like to get 30, 40 arrows in per session. You know, I take I take my time, you know. I'm out there for two, two and a half hours. You know, I wanna shoot a couple, shoot a couple groups, take us, take a break, and then okay, let me work on this, you know. So yes, shoot, shoot with the purpose and like make sure it's for you because I agree. I I got into that that lull of just like uh just gotta film something. Yeah, yeah. And it's just life happens, man. Like, I got a full-time job. I do this for fun. Yeah, you know, yeah, yeah, I want to be a Ty Jordan, I want my content to be up there. Yes, I'm striving for that every day, but at the end of the day, it's like, hey, you got a full-time job. And like, you if I now I I shoot more off camera because I'm like, I just want to go out there and shoot. No cameras on nothing. Yep. You know, I don't want no pressure of me having to look good for the camera or whatnot. You know, I just want to go shoot, you know.

SPEAKER_00

And I I used to do that, but now like uh when I lived in South Dakota, I had like small property, I couldn't really shoot anything anything. And when I went to the range, he wasn't really, he didn't really like cameras in there like that. So I was like, ah so I I didn't feel my shot, my I didn't feel me shooting. But then when I moved here to Texas, I got kind of kind of a nice big property here. But I don't bring my camera out there. I'm like, you know what? I'm gonna get out here and I'm going to shoot, shoot, and shoot. And I go through my reps, my 20 yards, 30 yards, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and I'll shoot 80 until I can get a group like this. At 80, I'll keep shooting until I'm in if then once I get tired, it's like, well, now it's just you know diminishing returns. So I'll just I'll just put it up. But normally, if I can get out of five arrows, if I get three in a tight group, I'm done for the day. But I'm I'm going 20 at 20, 20 at 30, 20 at 40, just getting them in. And then as I get close to the season, then I start, you know, implementing little workouts. So like if I'm shooting at 80, I'm gonna do a light jog down, get my arrows, walk back, you know, try to take my shots with a uh a heavy heart rate, a fast heart rate. I like that. And then I do in-season reps. Like I know a lot of cats will we we practice all off season. As soon as the season starts, the only time you pull in your bow back is when that deer in front of you. So I'm now like I get up in the morning during the season, first thing I do, cold shot, where it's hitting that. All right, cool. Working on that, and I'm just getting them in season reps. And so I like I said, I hardly take the camera like out to the my my range here because it's like that's my me time, that's for me to get better. And if I'm if you see me filming something, I'm you know, I'm shooting, it's because I that's what I'm doing. I'm I'm I'm filming this for me shooting. It ain't I'm gonna set this camera up and I'm just keep showing y'all what I'm doing. No, I'm literally making a video for me shooting.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Now, as as as the season go like comes into play, do you um whether you're doing like a blind or what they call like a saddle or something like that, are you shooting from nose positions as well?

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. So uh so I have a tree in my backyard. I have my saddle and stuff, my stand and stuff set up in there. That stand, that means that little platform, don't leave. That's the platform, the house platform. I shoot from that. If I know I'm gonna be shooting the ground blind, I'm shooting from a ground, I'll sit in the chair with the ground blind out there and I'll shoot out of that. Um, and then if I like when I go to Colorado, I know it's it's spot in stock. So I'm taking shots from my knees, I'm taking shots from like really awkward spots. Like I might be my left leg is kicked out in front of me, and I'm kind of resting on my right leg and I'm yeah, shooting at like you know, side of a hill. I'm shooting. I'm trying to, I'm trying to put myself in the best, like a practice scenario that I possibly can. So, you know, that that's what that's what I do because it's like a lot of people will shoot 20 yards standing straight up, like they shooting in a range. Right. You are very, very rarely ever going to be hunting where you get that perfect stance like that. So you gotta know how your bow reacts when you're in certain positions.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's it's kind of like shooting a uh, you know, like a gun, you know, or like a pistol, basically. Uh, you know, the old qualifying, you know, two rounds, six seconds. And it's just like, bro, a gunfight is never gonna be standing there as two rounds, six seconds. It's when you had a six-shot revolver. Like, that's not practical. You know, we gotta incorporate some movement, you know, some some barricade or others, left side, right side barricade, you know, you know, prone, urban prone. Like, we gotta incorporate something into this. And it I agree it's the same. But you know, I just shot a little 3D course on Sunday with a with a homie of mine, and we're on this hill shooting this this uh raptor at like 50 yards or so. Well, uh, he's like 6'4, and he's like, I gotta kneel down. I'm like, all right, well, my my short ass, like I, you know, I'm not gonna kneel, and I'm looking, I'm like, oh snap, I'm gonna have to kneel. So I'm like on my knees, drawn back, and I'm like, see, this is a good testament that I can pull this bow back, you know, the pounders and everything, and hold and actually make a good shot. Because this is very realistic that I'm gonna have to kneel down and not smoke this tree so I can hit my target. So um, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And and knowing your arrow flight, you know, every arrow is not coming, you know, depending on what pounders you're shooting. That arrow ain't coming out of a joke of flag, it's gonna, it's got an arc. I found it out the hard way. I had a deer, you know, it was probably 40 yards in front of me, and I'm kind of behind a tree. And uh I go to shoot, I I I'm that full draw, and I lean to go shoot, but at that time I I think I was probably pulling 45, maybe 50 pounds. And then there was an arc on it, and it was a branch that I mean it it was just low enough where it just doop. Yep, and I'm like, oh my goodness. Like I did everything right. But yeah, I didn't know I didn't know the uh the my aero flight. So like that's when I was like, I need to beef up my turn up my poundage and start really focusing on how my arrow is flying. So yeah, that's something that most people don't pay attention to, you know, when you start.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, I've been I've kind of been kind of dabbling at. I haven't bought a jig yet, but it's in my cart. Uh, but I'm gonna start like get it at where I like build my arrows and kind of really deep dive with it. I just haven't done it just yet, but I am kind of paying more attention, like, okay, this arrow setup that I have is flying a little bit better than than this one, you know, and kind of kind of going from there. But yeah, definitely knowing your arrow probably is is is key. I've been learning recently.

SPEAKER_00

I tried that a couple years ago, man. I said, Man, you know, everybody building arrows. I started seeing it on TikTok. Everybody building arrows, everybody's selling them. So I mean, I'm gonna build some arrows. Man, I went and bought two dozen arrows. I got the jigs and everything, glue, I got all that stuff. Then I sat down, man, started watching the movie and started, you know, uh prepping my prepping all my arrows and getting them rubbed down and started fletching them. Man, about three hours went by. I had like six arrows done. I said, Man, I I'm paying for that. I'm I woke my time. I'm good. Man, I got ADHD. I can't just be tedious, it's very T. I did finish those those arrows and they flew good, but I'm like, I I did it one time, I don't like it. There are yeah, there's people that love doing this stuff, so you know I'll pay them to do it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm I'm I'm I don't know if I'll be that way, but I'm hoping I don't because I it it looks so like I don't know, it looks good on camera when you watch the playoffs doing like, oh man, yeah, I could do that, yeah, yeah, I can do that, and but you gotta remember they cut it down, they edit it down, they sped it up, whatever the case may be. So you watching a two-minute video, and it really probably took them an hour.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's wild, bro. So so you you've been shooting Archery for about what 10 months now? Yeah, yeah, about 10 months. All right, so if you could go back and talk to you talk to yourself day one, what what would you tell yourself? Oh man. That's a good question.

SPEAKER_03

Um that is a very good question. Probably be patient, because I I feel like be patient and don't, I know it's probably a cliche answer, but be patient and don't put too much pressure on yourself. I feel like sometimes I will um, for example, like it's work. Like sometimes work gets in the way and I can't shoot until the weekend, right? And archery is set as a sport that I feel you have to be consistent on. And so like the previous week, I could be shooting like really good. You know, I'm like, man, I'm shooting good. And I want to continue that on until the next following week. Well, work happens and I might not get to that weekend. And then I get to that weekend, I'm like, not putting together a great group. I can't record that. I can't, you know. And so then I'm putting pressure on myself, and then I'm getting away from what why I got into it. It's just because I need something relaxing and fun, and I want to be outdoors. So then if I lose sight of that, then I'm like, okay, I'm I'm I'm I'm doing it wrong. So I think don't put too much pressure on yourself. Just stay in the moment, enjoy it, and better yourself because you want to do it, not because you feel like you have to do it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um so yeah, and I I never really had a trouble with, okay, I gotta have the best of the best. So that that wouldn't bother me. But yeah, I think just be patient and like don't put pressure, don't put too much pressure. Like some pressure is good, but don't I sometimes I put too much pressure on myself and I'm just like, I'm not enjoying it. And I don't want to be like that. You know, I don't want to feel like I had, oh, I gotta go out to the range. Like, no, I I get to because I want to.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know, you know, so yeah, that's just for me. Yeah, that's a good question.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, babe, being being patient is one of the biggest things because everybody wants to to be good fast. And and that's that's what and it's nothing wrong with that. Like, you you want to be able to be, you know, uh uh proficient in what you're doing quick, but you know, there is a learning curve, you know. Um, everybody's not going to go out and shoot, you know, uh a 12 end, 10x, 300, perfect 300. It's not happening, but it's but if you just be patient and you continue to be consistent and shoot, you know, you will, man. And that even goes with no content creating. Like it's it's wild, like a lot of guys are getting in the archery and they're starting content at the same time, which in my opinion, uh they don't go, man, they go hand in hand, but that starting at man, it is hard. You you gotta be a patient person because yeah, you're trying to learn how to shoot a bow, you're making content, and you want people to watch that content. And it's when you spend an hour and a half editing a video to post it and get 150, 200 views, you like, dang, man, everybody watching this, and you got a it will it will break your heart. And that's why hey, at when you first starting out, don't even look at the numbers, bro. Just post and ghost. Post and ghost. And I know be consistent, because man, I didn't man, I I I hired a camera crew. This was like four years ago as at Tech had a camera crew, man. We all shooting. The dude put together a dope video and posted it. Like 95 of the views. I'm like, dang, man, I spent this money for it. I spent this money. I didn't, I didn't know how social media were. I was just like, man, yeah, like the people don't see the beat, man, the music dope, the shots dope. 95 people fast forward. That video was four years ago. I then reposted it like like a year ago, and it it did like 20 something thousand. I'm like, what's the difference? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and it sucks because when we don't control the algorithm, nope, we don't control that, you know, and it changes so often. Yeah, yeah. And it's funny you say that, man. Man, that's been such a tough, that's been such a learning curve, but it's it was good. I feel like that part was good pressure for me because you're right, man. Like, I can go on my TikTok right now, man, and and and these let's just say, like my older videos, man. Heck, even the one I just posted a couple days ago, it's gonna got flap 14. You know, now I got 1800 followers, uh, but sometimes you like, I got some videos that's 35,000, 12,000, uh, 17,000. So you get you like, oh man, 17,000. That's that's just 14 people. 514 people is a lot of people. Do I know 514 people? No, I do not. So I gotta tell myself, like, bro, Jake, chill out, man. Like, uh your last two videos. Last my last three videos got under one pick. So one six sixty two is like that's a lot of people. So just like just relax. Yes, man, man, it's crazy. In my head, I'm like, I put so much time in editing these videos. Uh, you know, the ones where I went to my first 3D shoot, man, bro, I was out there for two and a half, three hours, right? And I recorded everything, right? And I edited I edited down myself. And I took the time, bro. And there, and there are three parts. Now, on if I had a YouTube channel, which I probably will start a YouTube channel, if I had a YouTube channel, I can make shorts or whatever the case may be, but it'll be maybe a 40-minute video. TikToks for people that want a Doomscrow. They want a five-minute video max. And unless you invested in my content and the sport and everything, are you really gonna sit there and watch an 18 to 20 minute video? Probably not. So I posted that video and I was just like, man, it's not doing what I wanted to do. Because I put, I spent so much time editing it down. I spent so much time putting the music. Da-da-da. People don't know how hard it is to just take my videos when I take uh different camera. I got you can see the target and myself. I have to clip those together, like separate, two different cameras, put them on one device, make sure they're synced up so the audio matching, and it's just like people don't understand. Like, you put all we put all this time and effort, and you do not see the results that you think it deserves, you're just like you get into that, like, oh my gosh, like, is this working?

SPEAKER_00

Hey, I'm hey, I'm gonna give you a pro tip. If you're using two different cameras, you want them to sync, hit record, and clap. When you clap, it's gonna make that that spike in the audio. So then you wouldn't bring it into whatever program you audioing or using for editing, just take those two sound waves, line them up, your whole video was in sync now. Damn, that's smart. I and my brother called me that because like we would go do, I would go with him and do interviews when he was interviewing these high school kids and stuff, and he's he'd have like three or four cameras set up, and he'd be like, All right, hold on, and he'd clap and goes, Go. And I'm like, why is he doing that? And he was like, dude, I got I got four cameras up here. He goes, So all four cameras gonna pick up that clap, and I just gotta line up, line that audio wave up, and then everything else is everything else is what you call it in sync. That is genius. Nope.

SPEAKER_01

That is genius.

SPEAKER_00

You got four cameras, so you got you gotta cut one on record, record, record, record. So they're all gonna be behind each other, but when you clap, they all gonna pick it up, line them up. That is genius. Go on about your way, you good. Why did I think of that? It's a a pro a pro tip. Um, like it's it's a simple stuff like that. That's crazy. Well, hey, yeah, hey man, TikTok will mean this posting content period will just it'll it can make a break you, and then especially like now TikTok wants you to boost everything. Hey, you know, boost boost, and if you don't, it's it's a pay-to-play game, that's what it's gonna become, right? Right. I don't care that much to do it, man. But like I know with this when I start this podcast, man. I went out and bought bought the stuff for it, recorded my first episode, and in my head, I'm thinking, well, I'm gonna post this, it's gonna go, it's gonna go live, man. Boom! I couldn't even sleep that night. I'm like, yeah, man. In my head, I'm thinking people gonna see it, they're gonna start watching it. I go to I go to work the next day. I'm like, I'm not even gonna look at it in the morning. I'm gonna wait till I get off work. I come back, three downloads. I was like, dang, man, I'm uh well, okay. So, you know, um that that that first episode probably did like 15 downloads. I'm like, man, but I put the second one out, so I was and I put the third one out, and I just like you know what? Keep doing it, I'm just gonna just keep doing it. And then I had one, every every conjugator has a time with me. I'm just wasting my time. And I was listening to the Drew Rogan podcast, and he was talking about how when he had first started podcasting, when nobody was really doing it, he was like, His friends were like, Why are you doing this, man? Like, who who's listening? He was like, I don't know, I don't care. I'm just I love I'm just doing it. Yeah, he goes, he goes, I didn't really get consistent listeners until my five my 500th episode. That's when everything blew blew up. I'm like, man, I'm sitting in episode 13 tripping. This dude who got the biggest podcast in the world said nothing and took it, nothing took off for him until his 500 episode, and that was when no one had a podcast. Now everybody got a podcast. So that 500 that you know I was chasing at this point, it's probably a thousand, fifteen hundred. At this point, I'm just I do it because I love it, and but the views are coming now, but it it mean it took episode like 95 to to constantly get consistent, you know, 10, 15,000. And then I did so my brother and I joke it 200,000, and I was like, Woo! And it that I don't know, I don't know why that episode did so well. I haven't been able to rep to duplicate it. I've gotten close, I've gotten 150, I've gotten you know 125. I ain't hit that 200,000 mark, but it's fine though, because it's I'm I'm you said it earlier. People get mad, man. I only got a thousand views. Put a thousand people in a room. A lot of people.

SPEAKER_03

A lot of people. It's a lot of people, and we lose sight of that. We I think we see our favorite content creators, or not even that, you scrolling, you just like, how does this 10-second clip have five million likes, uh, 15 million views, X amount of bookmarks and shares, and it's just you know, it's cool, it may be funny or whatever, but I'm putting in some work. You know, I'm putting this, but it's it's you gotta understand too, it's like the algorithm. That that 10 seconds, a lot of people in a short period of time have liked it, shared it, and bookmarked it. And so TikTok's like, oh, well, we're gonna promote this. We're gonna promote this. I feel like if everything was on the same playing field, it would change the game. But it that's never that's not realistic, you know.

SPEAKER_00

But no, it's it's it's not at all. It's not everybody's not on the same playing field because I've seen like my my my best friend, he's uh he's a content creator and he does it for a living. Last week he posted a video of him eating a sonic seven dollar meal deal in I think in three hours it had 20 million views. I'm like, bro, you like you literally cut your camera and was like, hey y'all, Sonic got this seven meal deal. I was like, bro, I was like, ain't no way. And dude, he gets all kind of brand deals and stuff like that. I'm like, bro, how he was like crazy. He goes, I he goes, I don't even know how that works. He goes, dude, I like and but he he'd been at it, he's been hit by he's been hitting at the apple several times, and he's finally got it where he consistently he he posts a video, 25, 30 million views, easy, like that.

SPEAKER_03

Man, the only person I know that do that is G Mac, and he be uh he put them to put them numbers, but yeah, man, that hey, you know, hopefully one day I I can say I can train back and say yeah, I can do that, but um no, I don't I'll I don't know if it'll it is possible, but I'll never live myself. But man, you you see some little people, man, they and they doing it just like how like it's you you're not even really doing much. You just cutting a camera with a light on your face and you're getting 20 million.

SPEAKER_00

But you know some cats just do it, bro. They if you like I know TikTok will reward you for going live a whole bunch, like dude, I know they'll go live for five, six hours. I ain't got that kind of time, bro. I ain't just not bro. I know people that ain't got no job.

SPEAKER_03

You ain't got no job, bro. I know well, there's a late, there's a girl I follow, bro. Um she um she goes live in her shop when she does hair. She does hair a lot, she does lots, and uh bro, she she's live every single day, all day. She's live in her shop, she's live at home, and she consistently gets followers and views. And I'm just like, I don't there's no way. There's no way that I could, you know. I set out a time to go live at the range for an hour and an hour and a half. And I'm like, okay, now I gotta figure out the next day. Because I'm like, an hour and hour and a half is a lot. Dude, one day, one day I shot at the range and decided that people are like, Oh, you're getting off stay on, just stay on. I'm like, okay. So then I drove home. People were still chatting with. I still had like 20 people chatting in live, you know, and then I get to the house. I'm like, all right, well, I'll catch up. You're like, oh, you I still chatting, bro. I had like 30 something, 40-something people in the live just chatting, and I'm just like, This is weird, like, bro, not doing what I first started.

SPEAKER_00

They like that. That's that's why you're your cast and not and all those guys with a big because people like feel like they're just like watching your real life. I think TV's gotten boring for people and they want to see like you know, your real life every day, you know. P I see people online just eating a bowl of cereal, they got 500 people watching. He's he's eating a bowl of cereal. Eat a bowl of cereal. What's what's up, chat? I mean that was like right.

SPEAKER_03

Brain rotten. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. You know what though, I think I think if you and also, man, if you've been doing TikTok since COVID, like prime COVID, when people were locked in and all they had was this Joker, you you you now the OG on TikTok. Yeah, and and and and like you and I, I don't know how when you started yours, but you know, I just started mine last year. So it's like your been people been there, done that. They got millions of views, they got millions of followers, and it's like that's the other thing too you gotta think about. Those people that started this in Prime Code when everybody was locked up, they got their followers. They what what started them doing prints at their family members because they were all locked in, they ain't doing it no more. No. Now they've all grown, people moved out of the house, and they just doing their life now. People still like, yeah, I've been following you since you was pulling pranks on your sister when we was locked up in code, like what started them is gone now because they've grown up and people still following them. That's that's just like yeah, you I mean, yeah, it's it's tough when you when you're starting to get into it now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, but it is it's uh it's it's crazy, man. But I I but I I enjoy it, I love it. And what what get me what really get me excited is and we talked about it earlier, is seeing you know the representation in archery is just it's constantly growing, man. It's constantly growing. Um like you know, and you said it, you know, since you've been on you seeing, you know, more and more people getting into it. Like, I kind of want to circle back around to that. You know, why why is it that you know African Americans don't, you know, why why aren't we, you know, more attracted to the outdoors and archery and stuff like that?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know, man. Um that's a good question. I don't I for one, I don't think there's any people teaching it. I don't think there's there's either there's two things in my opinion. Either there's no knowledge of it, or people that do have knowledge, they just gatekeep. They don't they just don't share it. And you know, if if I feel like I have a knowledge of something, but the generation I'm gonna teach it to has no interest, then I just yeah, I wasted my time. I feel like I feel like nowadays everybody wants that instant uh gratification, they want that instant reward without working for it. And you know, attention span is low. You know, we're on social media a lot, which is good or bad, maybe good for you and I, because we can post a lot of stuff, but it's bad for the receiving end sometimes, you know. So um, all right, man, I'm I'm from East St. Louis, Illinois. That's where I'm from. I'm from the ghetto, man. And that that's the archery, that's that's white people's stuff.

SPEAKER_00

That's I mean, that's that's what I've been told. That's many people's stuff. Like, that's not us. Yeah, it's it's it's not, you know. Um we're seeing we're seeing a boom. And I've had people ask me this question, and I don't know the answer to it. What's sparking the growth? Because like you get on you get on TikTok now, and I swear I feel like it's I get 10 to 15 cats almost a week. It's like, hey dude, I just got into archery. Like, um, you know, can you give me some tips? And I'm like, dang, this it's 15 cats, these new cats. No, that new, like, and and I've asked them, like, bro, how'd you get started? Oh man, you know, I've been seeing the other guys on TikTok do it. I want to get into hunting. A lot of people, oh, I'm starting to grow my garden and grow my own food. Now I want to be able to go out and hunt my own food. Okay, so it's that's why they did it, but I'm like, what's the overall growth like? Because these these companies aren't marketing to us.

SPEAKER_01

No, no.

SPEAKER_03

I and what sucks because I mean I I can't think of anybody that I've seen online that's famous in the artist community that is a minority. Um, you know, honestly, I think it's just I think it's just seeing it. Or word of mouth. I got man, I got homies that I work with, and they're just like, man, you make me want to pick up a boat, a vote. And they're just like, man, I started this uh TikTok stuff, and people bathe thought of me at work. They're just like, oh, she on TikTok, hey, you know, I'm just like, you know, whatever. I got just brushed with off, and I'm like, okay, you just watch. Because one day, and then and whether it's this year, the next year, the following year, one of these days, somebody, I'm speaking to existence. Easton's gonna retail. Hoit gonna retail. Somebody like, hey, we seen you grinding for the last three years. You wanna, we wanna do this. Now, now I'm getting paid on my off time to go travel and go shoot something. And then, oh, I get a new bow every year. Now who laughing? So it's like, don't, don't, don't laugh because you don't understand it, you know. But I think that, you know, people just see it and they're like, you know what? He's doing it, I can do it. He looks like me, I can do it. And I think that's the good thing about social media is that we can post it online and say, hey, look, I'm I'm a brother, you know, I look like this, and I'm doing it, you know. If we if we always had that mentality of that's white type of stuff, then we would never excel in anything. Nothing. Nothing. And we've invented a lot, we've done a lot that we've never got credited for and all that stuff like that. We know about all that stuff. So we we can't always have that mentality of, well, we don't do that. Okay, well, why not? Why is it that way? Yep. It don't have to be that way. So let's let's let's break that cycle and get out there and learn it. You know, we may be just as good or even better when we can collaborate and have, you know. So I really think that it just I think people just like you said, man, TikTok will, and I just say that because I'm on, but TikTok will drop you off on a random video. You're just like, how did I get here? This is nothing what I this is literally what I watch. Like, how did I get here? Yep, and uh so I think that's kind of the same thing, you know. It's just like, oh, snap, probably deputy. I'm scrolling when I on my on my arrow page and I'm looking on my sleep and sister suit there. I was like, oh snap, put the on. I was like, oh yeah, follow. And I just got I was like, this is crazy.

SPEAKER_00

This is crazy. That that's like people be like, bro, how you find all these guests? I'm like, one, I comb the TikTok streets, bro. I don't sleep at night. Like I like I don't. It just I might go to bed at 12:30, one o'clock, but like I'll get off this podcast and I'll be in here working, I'll be scrolling through TikTok, whatever, and I see somebody. Oh, follow. Hey man, check this, check you out, man. Um, units are on the podcast, and uh like, yeah, I'll come. I ain't never been on the podcast before, but yeah, I'll talk. Yeah, all right, cool. That that's how that's how I find guests. Like, I don't care if you're famous, I don't care if you've been shooting archery for one day or 20 years. I don't care if you shoot archery, I want to talk to you. And if you're a person of color and you shoot an archery, I definitely want to talk to you because I want to know how you how you found it. Um, I actually got myself into some hot water with this one uh this one podcast. Um, he invited me on. I thought it was we're gonna have like a nice friendly conversation, but his whole thing was, you know, why why is representation important? Like, why do you care if more black people shoot archery? You know, shouldn't you care about everybody shooting archery? I said, Well, here's the thing. I said, I said, me wanting more black people to shoot archery don't mean I want less white people shooting less white people, right? That I said, where I come from, a lot of cats don't. They don't I will they don't they don't do anything in the outdoors. The outdoors is for is foreign to them. And I was like, you know, like it's either you play football, basketball, you run track, or you're trying to drop the hottest mixtape on the streets. That's pretty right. And so, like, if you if I can put a a bow, if I can introduce a cat to the outdoors and put a bow in his hand, and that that opens up his whole view of the world. Like, dude, I talked to a cat last week, blew my mind at 25 years old. He has never left our city, not one time. I said, bro, you haven't like we live I live two hours away from Dallas. I said, You never been to Dallas? Never. So I started naming cities in between here in Dallas. Like Mount Pleasant, never. Mount Pleasant is an hour away. Okay. New Boston, never. New Boston is 30 minutes away. Leary, never been to Leary. That's 15 minutes down the road. You've never left the city. He goes, bro, I ain't never left my block.

SPEAKER_03

That's crazy.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm like, I'm like, bro, you gotta get out, bro. I say, you too young to be stuck here. Like, get in your car and just drive 15, 20 minutes down the road. He's like, man, I want to go fishing and da-da-da. I'm like, you do know there's Lake Papman is five minutes down the road, like big lake, campsites, all that. Oh, I didn't even know we had that. I said, bro, here, take my number down. We gonna please. Yeah, here's the twist of the story. Guy comes, guy comes into the stuff the store, because I'm a tobacco rep, so I'm always in and out of gas stations. So guy comes in, he goes, Hey man, you like you getting ready for the season? I'm like, Yeah. And so we we talk about hunting and stuff. So the guy leaves, he goes, You hunt? And I was like, Yeah, he goes, I got a bow. Can I hunt with that? I said, You got a bow. He was like, Yeah, he goes, but man, it's it's it's a recurve. I said, How do you have a recurve? Well, my grandpa he he had it, he passed away and he left it to me. I said, Well, I don't hunt with a recurve. I said, But I said, Are you good with it? He goes, Damn, I shoot every once in a while. I said, You never left the block, but you got a recurve. I said, But we got we got we gotta link up, though. We gotta link up. Yeah, for sure. I have I have a couple extra compound bows. So he he actually gonna come to the house this weekend and we're gonna shoot, and I'm gonna show him, I'm gonna help him get his tongue to safety. I'm gonna he can go out and set up tree stands with me, and I'm I'm gonna try to get him his first deer. I can't promise you nothing, but you you'll have a good time being out there. That's what we need, man.

SPEAKER_03

I I've said it before, and I'm gonna keep saying it over and over and over again. Like I also created my page to inspire everybody to get out and just try it and see if you like it and get it into the sport because it is one of the most relaxing things I do. And I I I need that outside of work. I mean, you know, I have a stressful job, uh, stuff like that. So I just need something outside of that to do. And that is why I created the TikTok and then I made it into a business. So I got things in the works that's coming, hopefully this year, but we'll see. Um, but like I just I just want to encourage everybody to get into it. And so it was cool to see like two of my homies that I work with, they're just like, hey, let's just run out the shields and let's try it out. Okay, cool. Come on, boys. You work instead, yeah. We're up there, get some bowls together so they can try it out. Got into the draw length, and they're just like, my boy's like, hey, this is fun, bro. This is I'm like, yeah, now you see why I'm I do it so much. And now you see why I'm always out here. Now you you may see that I'm spending money on this and that, but like I guarantee you come text them, I'm writing it all off. Like, like I'm not just lighting it all on fire and just you know, hell the hell with it. Like, no, like it this is this is an investment and I enjoy every bit of it. And it's uh it's a mostly buy once, cry once type of thing. You know, with a few tweaks you know here and there. So that's that I I love, it's like when I when I go on live, man, people talking like, man, you know what? You make new one, go get my ball. I haven't got out in X amount of months in years or whatever to go shoot. Okay, great. Or I just got done swinging some arrows down range and I'm watching you now. Great. I love to hear it, man. I love to hear people just like I'm encouraged to go shoot, or I want to go shoot, you know, whatever the case may be. I just finish, I'm like, great, because that means we're all just out here enjoying. We're meant to be outside. We're humans. We're meant to be outside. We're not meant to be cooped up and and just ride away. Like we're meant to be moving and grooving. And like I just, if and then then, you know, if you're a minority, then great is even better because I don't feel like It there's an there's an importance with having um diversity in anything that we do. Because um I can inspire I feel like we can inspire more people if we show diversity in that. If you just see the same type of people, it's like, well, you know, I it's hard for me to relate. Yeah, you know, whether you're Mexican, whether you're you know Nigerian, whatever the case may be, you have someone that you can relate to, you're like, oh, okay, I might have to look into that. I might I might want to try it. You know, so I think it's very important that not only we reach everybody to try to encourage them to get an archery, but definitely people that like us. Because I'm telling you what, man, me getting into it, I was just like, oh scam, I didn't realize how many people do it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but and and you want to get everybody involved in it. Man, bro, my little brother, bro. I like he's since we've been little, anything that I do, he wants to do it. So when he saw me shooting my bow, he was like, bro, like what is that? And I was like, Archery. He's like, Man, I want to do it. So I got I got him, I got him a bow, and um, but he like he would never get it set up. So the first time I I was going to tech, I caught him and he was like, What do you got going this weekend? I said, Bro, I'm gonna over up to South. I'm in South Dakota. I was like, I'm going out to Rapid City to do the total archery challenge. Oh, bro, I want to go. So I'm like, come on. So he come, he he flies up to South Dakota. The first time of him him ever shooting his boat was in my backyard at 10 yards. Oh wow, so he's but he he's a fast learner, so I'm like, do this, this, and after about 25, 30 arrows, he's he was on target. He he's like, I let's let's let's go. So we get in real, we go out there, and I'm like, just so you know, like we won't be shooting at nothing like 10 yards, you're gonna be shooting at 25, 30, 40, 50, 80. Yeah, we should we're getting out there. He's like, bro, I'm an athlete, bro. He goes, I'm just gonna, I can just do it. 20 yards, like 80 yards. No, it ain't, but all right, all right, okay. But dude, he went out there, man. When I tell you he had a time, like he was like just excited, he was losing arrows left and right, but he would just happy to be out there. He's talking to people because he's like, I'm not much of a talker, right? I was like, Man, this is my first time going out to tech. I know it's gonna be a whole lot of people out here. I don't know how they're gonna respond or respond. Of brothers been out here, right? Man, we walk out there. Have you ever been to a tech?

SPEAKER_03

No, not yet, bro.

SPEAKER_00

No, we walked in, bro, to the vendor village, and it was like everybody's like, Hey man, what's up? What you shooting? Everybody's everybody's having a good time, just you know, want to get to know where you're from and all that stuff, what course you shooting. And I'm like, dang, everybody welcome. Okay, like so now I can put the guards down, we we come right right. And dude, my brother, he just out just talking, talking, talking, talking. Yeah, we he end up re he somehow we ended up like right behind John Dilly in line for something, and he's like, start talking to him. Oh, yeah, me and my brother here from South Dakota, man. And I'm like, Yeah, he's like you talking to, yeah. Oh, yeah, this is my brother, man. He dreaded Archer, man. He got a whole got a whole podcast he just starting on. So me and Dilly start talking, whatever, and we get done and we walk off. I'm like, bro, you know who that is? He's like, Nah, like, right. Like, he liked he liked the Michael Jordan of Archer. He was like, Oh, for real? Oh, that's cool. Like he just lost the word. Like, you know, whatever. And uh, and then we went to Oklahoma Tech and we met Dilly. We walked in, Dilly saw us like yo, Trey Nick, what's good? And people like, How like y'all fans? How do you no? We just ran to him in Oklahoma, we just chopped it up. So we had deer with him sitting there talking and chilling and stuff, and it's like, uh we had a great time at tech to the point where he was like, bro, I'm I'm doing this archery stuff, bro. I'm doing it. And man, he came home and got his boat set up, and bro, he was shooting, shooting, shooting. He's got his first deer already. I mean, he just he's got into it, but it was like when I got into it, I wanted to tell everybody about it. Right, right. All gotta do this, and man, I've met so many people from with the podcast, bro. Just having people come on and talk, but I've like, out of all the people that I've met through the podcast, I've only met two in person. We but we all talk on the phone every day, yeah, at least once a week. So that's why I wanted to do my uh this uh this brotherhood retreat. Because I'm like, man, I've met all these cats. There's guys that have happened a podcast that they end up like, Hey man, I heard you on the dreadruncher podcast. Do you live right down the road from me? They became they became hunting partners or whatever, or hunting buddies. So I'm like, man, let's get everybody I've met together. We all like that link up, and it's not gonna just be a weekend where we just all just go out and just shoot. We actually gonna like you know, steel sharpen steel. We're gonna sit there or iron, sharp as iron, whatever they say. We're gonna go, you know, share tips and and tricks and trade, you know. I'm saying we're gonna shoot, we definitely gonna shoot, but just just have a good time and and and fellowship, and uh, and man, I put it out there, and I didn't think a lot of people was gonna be down for it. And everybody's like, nah, bro, I'm coming. Like, I'm down. I got that text last I spoke to my wife, and I was like, Hey, uh, I'm saving the date with this.

SPEAKER_03

I said I'm yeah, going with it.

SPEAKER_00

So, you know, it's gonna it's gonna be a time, man. And I'm super excited, and like I just want people to come out, have a good time, and it because dude, it's man, it's it's so many of us. And if if people can see a large group of brothers doing like after shooting their bows, having a good time, fellowshipping. I don't care if it's just one kid come across and like, dang, bro, I want to do that, I want to do that and reach out. That's that's what's that's one that's one more in the archery family, man. Because I yeah, I I grew up how old are you? 30. 30. Okay, okay. So we I'm I'm I'm I'm 36, so we about we're around the same age, dude. I grew up in a time where it was not cool to be black and be interested in comic books and anime cartoons, and bro, like to be a black nerd, man, being like she was in the closet, bro. He was like, I can't, man. You want to drag a lightsaber, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Bro, I got a lightsaber sitting right here. If I can't talk about that, like you said, Dragon Ball Z. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I used to I remember being on the bus and hearing like I remember when uh Star Wars episode one came out. Dude, my dude, I was so like I was obsessed. My uncle Chris got me into Star Wars, and I just loved it. And he took me to the movies to go see it, but we had to go to the mad neck, like man, because I don't I know people hang out at the movies, I don't want cats to see me. Yeah, we went to the mad name, and uh, I remember being on the bus and hearing like all the kids talk about oh man star wars, and I was just like I want to I don't want to talk about it, man. I want to talk about young Anakin man, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, and I just didn't and now I and I was I was going to Comic Cons. Like my mom would take me to Comic Cons and stuff. I was doing all that, but I was I would hide it because I didn't like want to be looked at as a nerd. Now, bro, it's cool to be a nerd, it's cool to be a black cat's cool man. Uh a cat in my hometown, young young black cat, he started uh it's called HypeCon. It's like our local Comic Con. And man, I walked in there, and man, seeing all brothers and sisters, I'm like, boy, this fit. I wish I had this growing up. Like Darth Vader, uh, they had the um the 51st uh crew here. So people in like there's a um there's a I forgot what they call it an enclave or a group or whatever in in Arkansas, which is right across the border. But like these are people all across the country that they get like Darth Vader costumes, uh stormtrooper costumes, like all these different Star Wars characters costumes, but it's like a high level that way. Anytime needs some extras, they call the 51st. Ah, okay.

SPEAKER_03

Hey, that's dope.

SPEAKER_00

Hey man, we we need you know saying 300 stormtroopers, and they're like, All right, cool. And they got a list of people that's close by or that's willing to go. Like, yeah, put an email out. Hey, we need 300 stormtroopers to be in in um in Los Angeles on this date for this long. And the guy was talking to, he was like, dude, people quit their job. They'll be like, Hey, I'm actually gonna be a star in a Star Wars movie. I can't I can't have two months off. Well, I quit that's crazy.

SPEAKER_03

That is crazy. It's funny because I I'm obsessed with I always say obsessed in a weird way, but like I know a lot about Star Wars. Like I said, I got a I got an annotated or not, I got an only one lightsaber that cost me like five hundred dollars sitting on my my table right now that I just have display. It's come with a blade, it just has different you can change the phones and everything like I spent money on this thing, and all that stuff, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, I'm I'm obsessed with it. But let me tell you, bro, my wife never watched Star Wars, but she would she's a big big bang theory fan, so they always make Star Wars references in that she don't know what they mean. So she's like, What'd that mean? I'm like, I'm letting her know. So one day she was like, Well, I've never watched Star Wars, let's watch it. Man, my face lit up. I said, We're gonna start from the beginning. Boom, episode. I'm watching, I'm just watching it, looking at her. And we watched we watched Return of the Uh Revenge of the Sith, and she realized that Anakin grew up turned into Vader, dude. She it she was like, Oh my gosh, and she looked over at me, bro. And I'm just bro, I bro, when when he when Obi-Wan cut him down on Mustafar, and he's yelling, Oh bro, yeah, it broke my heart, bro.

SPEAKER_03

Every time I watch it, bro, I'll be you just like man, you you were supposed to be the guy to bring balance, and you just portrayed through everything away. You supposed to bring balance, if not join them, not join them, man. Um, yeah, man. It's it's funny because it's like you want them to feel that emotion, you know what I mean? You want the to feel the heartbreak when you was in the theater watching that, you just like silence in the theater, and you just it's a feeling that you just you you gotta experience that, man. It's got you gotta experience that. That's funny you say that, man.

SPEAKER_00

And the sad part is you you know how it's gonna end. Yeah, and every time I watch it, I hope it's a different ending. Yeah, yeah. I hope like go go take go tell them what Palpatine just told you. Right. Go say something to somebody.

SPEAKER_03

They claim you for a fool, bro. Like, they know you powerful, so they try to manipulate you, man. It's just yeah. Oh man, it starts hard break. It's funny on the side though, we uh Game of Thrones. Like, I've watched Game of Thrones before. Wife hasn't. And we just started. She just like we're on episode eight of season one, and she's like really getting into it. And I'm just like, I told her, I said, I'm just letting you know, this is one of the best shows out there. Now it ended shitty, and like they they they did us wrong, but I said, Game of Thrones will will drag you in to break your heart, and then drag you in again, break your heart some more, but they keep I said it's one of the best shows out there, you know, overall. And I said, just prepare to cry. Because I said, The Red Wedding, I mean, just I didn't want to talk about it.

SPEAKER_00

All that, but let me tell you something. Let me let me tell you how I knew Game of Thrones was gonna be that show. Yeah, when they was advertising Game of Thrones, you saw Ned Stark on all the signs, you saw him on the on the commercials and all that stuff, you like, damn boy. Hey, this show about him, you know. You thought it was that dude, yeah. Stop like yep, he wasn't he on all the signs and all the the promotions. Nope. And when I realized, oh, they don't care about killing off main characters. I was like, Oh, they don't care, this is gonna be a good one. And dude, I've I'm so obsessed with Game of Thrones. I wish they would like we're getting like the House of Dragons when we're learning about the Targaryen's and all that, bro. Yeah, take me back to Aegon's Conquest, bro. I want I want to see it all take me back to Valeria. I want to see the Doom of Valeria, I want to see all that. I need all that. I want to see um uh whatchal Rhaegar fighting Robert Baratheon. I gotta see bro. Rhaegar was that dude. If you read the book, bro, Rhaegar was that dude. He was the one that was supposed to bring the Targaryens back to the glory, but like like all great men, he fell in love with the wrong woman, which end up being his demise. And I we I need to see all that on screen. All that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I want I want to see the the the era of the mad king. I want to see how the Ned and his brother or uh Ned's brother and his dad, all that lead up, the king story. I want to see even then afterwards. I don't mind afterwards because what's the thing with as far as West as West can go? And then, you know, I I want to see what happens afterwards. They they I've read that they tossed up the idea of making you know Kate Harrison his own little spinoff of it. I'm like, I wouldn't be mad at that, you know, see kind of what transpired. I think uh I haven't watched uh House of Turkey yet. I did read that it was like supposed to be like what 200 something years before the game of thrones.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, so uh the House of the Dragons takes place. Uh it's the it's the whole the Dance of the Dragons. Okay, yeah, so basically, yeah, it's 250 years before the Game of Thrones. So the king would be it's uh it would be Danny's, it's dad's great great great-great uncle. It go, but man, like when you when you really look at the line of Targaryen, you want to be like, bro, y'all tripping. Y'all, y'all have what at that time would be the nuclear weapon of y'all's time, y'all got dragons, dragons, yeah. We hey look here. I get it, we got infighting and all that, but let's solve this because we are at the top of the food chain. But like they say, absolute power, power uh absolute power corrupts absolutely. You when you got a dragon, bro. What I mean, you can't tell me nothing.

SPEAKER_03

You can't tell me nothing. You said what to me. Okay, come on, come on over, let's get roasted.

SPEAKER_00

I'm burning your whole city, man. I'm burning it now. Yeah, but it's funny, bro. This this is the dreaded archer podcast, but this people listen up be like, bro, y'all talking archery, and then y'all went into something. That's what it's about, bro. I I love, yeah, bro. I like and guess what? They got archery in Game of Thrones, too. They do, they do, they do need to bring on somebody to be like their like archery consultant because the way they be shooting bows and pulling stuff back, they wasn't doing that back, not like that. Yeah, you know what's so funny, man.

SPEAKER_03

So one um one live stream, we were talking about uh like knights and stuff like that. And I said, Man, can you imagine archery back then? I mean, you I take uh, let's take Battle of the Bastards, if you watch Game of Thrones, and you and you see how they're just standing there, right? And they probably would have got, let's just say, 40, 50 pound longbows there, you know, and they're just sitting there and just sling them, letting them loose. Now, I'm the guy, trained on the ground, Jay up there shooting arrows, and I'm like, oh shit, I'm hopefully I don't do trade on the draft. It's just like you you hopefully you hitting what you're shooting at. You know, what is that pepper in the sky, bro? Yeah, it's just like it's just like man, can you imagine just being an archer at that time? You know, you hopefully you good because I mean how how what are they making the arrows out of? You know, how you know, so it's just it's just that time to I feel like to be an archer would be a good one. Like, you really gotta be cold lucky, yeah, lucky and good at the same time because that's like what are you shooting at?

SPEAKER_00

You know, I know when uh when he let Rickard that he made him run to run to John, like bro, you know that's crazy. If you just like take three steps, take, take, yeah, run zigzag three steps to the right, you good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you good. Like the arrow is not hitting you, bro. Like, he him running a straight line just pissed me off. I'm like, what are you doing? I'd have been running, rolling, flipping, jumping. Man, I'm look, I'm looking at the arrow as it's behind. Okay, okay, that's why I'm gonna like bro. You're not hitting me. You let me run, my brother, you're not hitting me, bro. I promise you're not hitting me, bro.

SPEAKER_00

Not at all, man. Yeah, yeah. This is this is what I man, why I love doing this, man. Because I bro, I would have never known, man. You you wasn't like a nerd like me, man. Oh man, bro.

SPEAKER_03

I'm telling you, I got I got the Millennium Fucking, I got Green Goblin Mask, I got uh I'm gonna I love Power Rangers, you know. So I have uh I always wanted a freaking Power Rangers Ninja Storm Morpher. Because Power Rangers SPD and Power Rangers Ninja Storm was and Diner Thunder were my top three, all right? And the Thunder Rangers were my my favorite. Now, if you don't know Power Rangers, probably sounds bluegish, but I know my Power Rangers, bro. Okay, I mean the Navy Thunder were my guys, man. So I got their morpher sit right here, and I I bought I got it from England, from a thrift store in England. It came in just a crappy old box wrapped up in some newspaper, and legitimately it is a uh Thunder Rangers morpher, and I I've been a kid about it ever since. It sits in the original box, but I'm like, bro, we used to have these back in the day. You could you could go into Walgreens and get those little cheap lightsabers, you could go and get those cheap morphers that fucked out and everything, and you just like you didn't know, you just threw them away, and now they're on eBay from Japan for 200 bucks. Man, I had that, dude.

SPEAKER_00

My uncle Chris, bro, I think it was my eighth birthday. Bro, when I tell you I was a green ranger fan, but it wouldn't it wasn't just a green ranger, bro. Any Ranger, any color ranger that Tommy was, that was my guy. Tommy's my dude, bro. Okay, okay, which which one's the best though? The green. I'm gonna tell you why the green, because bro, he had he had the the flute and okay, ass dragon, and then he get the hey, I even want to tune and then he came up with that water, bro. I had the green ranger morphe, bro. And ain't I ain't talking about like no plastic one, it was real metal. The coin inside was was was brass, it was a brass thing. Well, I was eightness for me, bro. And I remember I used to play with it in the backyard, and I had then my my dad got me the sword, and my dad don't buy like uh birthday gifts like that at all, yeah. But he got me the sword, bro. And now when you blow into it, you have to push a button and then play the tune. And I took that shit to the skating rink, man, kind of put it down, shame, bro. 1999, it's gone. Oh and I told myself, if I ever to this day, if I see a cat in the mall that's got that, it's like that on site, it's like that on site. I told like uh me and my wife, we like we go to the casino every once in a while. I was like, let me tell you something. If we ever hit big, I say, I don't care what you buy, there's one thing that I'm gonna buy to let people know I hit the lottery. I'm getting a full Green Ranger authentic costume, the helmet, and I'm going to work in it to quit my job. Well, what I tell my boss, if you ever see me walk in with a green power ranger suit, just know that's my last day. I hit the lottery.

SPEAKER_03

I don't need this job. Yeah, I don't need this job. Uh hey, I'm out. I'm out. That's funny, but uh that is hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

I love the Power Rangers. I really want a I want a good Power Ranger movie. This last one they came in with, I liked it because it was dark and gritty. I I like, but it just the storyline sucked. But give me a really good dark Power Ranger movie, and then I want a I want a dark Darth Vader movie. I'm talking about boom, Order 66 happened, and I want it, I want it to take place right after where he's going through the galaxy, he hunting down Jedi. It's gotta be gritty. I want a rated R Darth Vader movie. Disney, if you're listening, I know you ain't, but if you're listening, if you want to make y'all money back, because y'all been putting out some shit these last couple years, if y'all want to make all y'all money back, drop a rated R Darth Vader movie, and you're gonna make three billion dollars.

SPEAKER_03

And Dave Falone, if he's watching this, now that Dave Falone is back in charge of actually making good stuff, because what's her name that was in charge of the Bova Fett project was absolutely Karen Kennedy? Yeah. Uh uh just the most woke, whatever. I'm not even gonna get down there at all. Anyway, uh, Dave Filone, please just get back to producing like you did with the Obi-Wan series and just make good stuff because we we need it. Because when Disney took it over, it just went down a drain. And you took one of the most feared bounty hunters in the galaxy and made him look like a schmuck. Uh so and I tell you what, the the first Star Wars that they released, man. Listen, when you go, when you think of the Star Wars, like I'll probably talk to the nerds, it's us. You when you watch Star Wars, you're like, I'm living in that time. I'm a Jedi or I'm a Sith or I'm a Bounty Hunter. I'm whatever the case may because I'm into this world, right? I believe in it. I feel like I can wield the force. I feel like I because I'm captivated. When Disney released those movies after they took it over, and that planet opened up with the giant cannon. I say, I can't even wrap my head around this because it's just not possible. The Death Star, I was like, okay, I can see that. I can see them building a space station that they're you know doing all this because it's a space station. It's it's a you tell me an entire planet with an Earth. We're thinking we're taking an Earth and this Earth just opens up in a massive cannon. It's like, come on now. I can't believe that. Doing too much. You're doing too much. Like there's believable, and then there's just like, okay, like so from that point on, I was just like, this is horrible. Like, stop it. And then, you know, so when Dave Filone actually started producing like those mini-series, uh, with uh the animated shows with like Count Dooku and all the Tales of the Jedi, yeah, uh, Over One series, all the when Dave Faloney actually put his hands into it, and actually, because he's going from canon, going what um what um oh man, I'm losing this train of thought. Uh the creative summer, what he's doing. There you go. There we go. When he's because he worked with going off what George actually wrote and everything, that's when it's like, okay, this is this is canon, this is good. And I'm fine with deviating from canon a little bit, but to that point where it's just like, come on now, a whole planet opening up with a canon out. Come on, it's just not even it just it from that point on, I was like, this is horrible. And uh when when Boba came onto the scene, and you're just like, you watched him, you're like, oh my god, that's that's that's that's boba. Like, how did he survive the Tarlack pit? How did he and you're thinking that it's just gonna, oh my god, we're tapping into something we've always thought about.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know, and then then it comes down, you're just like, okay. That's it. Yeah, I didn't even I didn't even watch it. Oh, it was, it was, it was, it was horrible. It was absolutely horrible. I only was happy that they brought back the original character back. Uh, I can't never pronounce his name, but uh, I was just very happy that they brought him back. Uh, that's probably the only decent thing they did that I thought that was good was they brought back the original character because he deserved his flowers. The man is a legend, an absolute goat in the Star Wars community. Yep. Um and yeah, I feel like the Mandalorian series were good. I I didn't hate it. Um, but um, yeah, I feel like Disney just got one of the infinity stones and they just didn't know how to use it.

SPEAKER_00

No, didn't they know how to use it? Now I will say they did a great job with Maul. I love Maul, the the new show on Disney Plus, the animated show at Dark Maul. I had to check that out. Hey. I don't I don't know who's behind it, but let me tell you something. It's it's dark. It ain't it ain't it ain't uh it's not like Clone Wars, nothing. Same animation style, but it's it's dark. It's real dark. Like I felt uncomfortable watching it the entire time. So I'm like, which makes sense. This is good because it takes you into the mind of Maul, and you like, oh, snap. That's why he the way he is, like they kind of touched on it like the last season of Clone Wars, just a tad bit. Right. But then it's just like I yeah, this is it gives you like it gives you Maul right after he gets cut in half. Boom, this is a story. And man. Like like Maul fights Vader. Ooh. Now get now give me give me that live action. But right, yes, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And and I'm fine, I'm fine with Hayden playing Vader as long as possible. I'm fine with all that uh because listen, hate him or love him. I thought Hayden Christian did a phenomenal job from at the time.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't know why people don't like it. It I think it was you gotta understand, like he captured a man that's in that's fighting with himself. He has he has inner demons, man. I just lost my mom. Yeah, I'm seeing these visions, I'm losing my wife. These people that I entrusted my wife to don't trust me. They won't put me for the counsel, they won't make me a Jedi master. Then I got this guy over here telling me that he can fix all this stuff, and his heart's being pulled in all these different directions. Yeah, he's gonna sound he could he's gonna seem like a whiny kid, right? Right that's what he he was that's what he was going through. So I think he captured Vader great. And um, I wouldn't mind hating Christian playing him at all. Like I'm I'm all down for it. I loved it.

SPEAKER_03

And and he I thought he was phenomenal. Just my personality, I thought he was phenomenal in that Sokka series. Yep. Man, when they were when they were bridging between the the the the force and all that stuff, and he was just preparing her for these lessons and really uh just prep, I mean, phenomenal storytelling to the point where it it actually made me emotional that you could feel the emotion that she was feeling during it, during his time of of going back and forth to himself. You almost and you almost lose sight that man, this dude had a pedo on. Yeah. That he loved and she loved him. She, you know, and and you're like, that man was training her and like to the best of his abilities while also dealing with what he was dealing with, you know, and so uh I thought that was a phenomenal episode. Sometimes I will go back on YouTube and watch that little episode or or just the some of those scenes because I thought it was phenomenal. Uh, especially when he was walking out off the bridge, you see him going back to switching back and forth between Vader and Anakin. Yes, yeah. Oh man, I thought that was beautiful. Man, I was like, oh, that's great. Because it and his eyes were red and then turned back to to normal, and it was just like, bro, that's crazy. And it's like he could tap into that siff, and the other person that could do that too was was uh Wendu, who was also my favorite Jedi.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, and you know, there's stuff to say, like people have they've said like he he survived, and then some people he died, and then George Lucas came out, I was like, nah, bro, he's gone. I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and nip this. There's there's a lot of theories that I'll let ride. This one, yeah, nah, we could we we not we're not gonna start off a spin-off with Mace Wendu survive because then like where would he fit in that story? It's not right, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Which sucks because I'm like, I really feel like he was, he is one of the most, besides Yoda, he is one of the most powerful Jedi uh there. And I feel like he had very little about him. And it on screen and something like that where you just you hear like a little crumb of that, like, oh man, he might be still alive because he could have force jumped or whatever. And I'm just like, I don't know. And then to hear that, it's like okay, yeah, it sucks, but you know, I would have loved for him to talk with the idea of yeah, he's a lie, he come back and he will figure it out, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Nope, no, man. But man, say, bro, you've been you've been doing this hunt content. Well, we got on a tangent, but I love it though. Yeah, I know, I know. But we're gonna get ready to wrap this thing up. But you've been doing this hunt content, man. Like I said for about 10 months, man. Where do you want to be a year from now?

SPEAKER_03

Um, so obviously I want to be able to go on my first hunt. Hopefully, this this uh this season, you know. I gotta sprinkle in some time with my kid because it's gonna be boring around this time. So, but I'll hopefully do that, get get my first hunt in. It even if I don't kill anything, I want to at least say that I went out there and tried and uh you know just experienced the experience it, you know. If I get a kill out of it, great, and I can share that on camera, that's even better. Uh, but hopefully grow me as an archer, get better, and also do more traveling. So I mean I want to do Bofest this year to happen because um, you know, I was trying to get some guys to go and but hey, you know, you know, so that didn't happen. But next year I was like, hey, we're going to Bowfest. Like, these are the guys that I want, like, let's go to Bowfest because I want to go out there, I want to meet new people, um, I want to get my my page out there. So hopefully by next year, man, I want to, like I said, Arrow, everybody arrow is now my business. Um, I got some things in the works. It's not just my TikTok page. So it is now a business. So if I can continue to grow that and, you know, show people that, hey, I'm out here, I'm encouraging everybody to get into the sport. Like, that's what I want. And so my plan for the end of this year is hopefully go hunting. And then, hey, this time next year, you know, I want to be going to a couple tacks, both fests, all that stuff. So I got both both is definitely happening next year.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Your your event that you're you're putting on is definitely happening. Uh I already told my life, those are the two things that for sure we're doing both fast. Yours popped up, and I said, Yep, we're doing that. And then um, yeah, if I can sprinkle in a couple tacks, we go do some traveling, even better. So uh yeah, man, that's that's that's my dude. Just continue. Honestly, keep doing what I'm doing now, just do more of it.

SPEAKER_00

Simple. You know. So if every opportunity opened up, like it everything just popped off, what would success look like to you? If the content popped off, you go out and you shoot a 200-inch white tail, um what you call it, you go to you go to Bullfest and everybody know your name and you you that dude there, all the doors open up. What does success look like?

SPEAKER_03

I would like to share it and get somebody else. And you know what I mean? Like if if if let's just say uh, for example, let's just say Easton reaches out and say, hey, we want to sponsor you, we send you arrows or whatever the case may be. Okay, cool. Can I use that to get somebody else into the game? Can I use that to uh maybe not necessarily not not for profit, but let's just say there's there's you know kids in my my community that want to, you know, get into get into it. Okay, can I, okay, hey, I got this brand deal. I can supply that to get them into, you know, get them into archery, you know, something like that. So can I take my success and use it to get somebody else into the game, get to get them into the sport? Um, that would be a good fulfilling reward for me. Because like, again, a lot of these creators that I've watched, they all just started with their phone or a camera in general and their boat, and they just shot and posted the video. And then they just kept doing it continuously, continuously, and now they're doing whatever the case may be. Um I I got a guy that um he was working at Shields actually. And uh uh Chris B called him and was like, hey, I've seen you working, I you know, heard great things about you. Come over to Iowa and meet with me. I'd like to offer you a job. Goes meet with him. And uh Chris B opened up an archery shop there in uh in Iowa, which I think Chris B just posted a YouTube video about it. Yeah, so my my buddy who just worked at Shields here in town, uh moved and went over there, and he's running that shop for him. And he's like left, been traveling with Chris B, Levi Morgan, all those guys. And I'm like, bro, I know you. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, I know you. You like he was one of the few people I trust. So I'm like, go to Shields. I'm like, hey, this is what I got. He'd be like, okay, I'll take care of you, you know, or I got you. So I told him, I was like, I want to go down there when you get set up up and running and all, I want to come down there and check it out, travel, do all that stuff with you, man. And he's like, Yeah, for sure. You know, so um, you know, I I I want to, if I am blessed enough to get recognition from, you know, any of these, you know, brands or or other content creators that that have bigger following, and I can take that and trickle it down, great. Because I I'm I hey, I'm looking for people that's you and I. I'm looking for people, you know, women. I'm looking for whatever the case may be. Okay, cool. Let me let me let me let me share the fruits of that I'm that I'm getting. So that's that's what I would like.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's how it should be, man. Like I I told myself, like, bro, once I get my like, if I get my foot in the door, I'm getting I'm getting cats on. That's I told myself that. And dude, every opportunity that I've gotten, if I can bring two, three people on, I'm bringing them with me.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I and I and I pay and I I pass it down. Like, man, cats come on and they, hey man, I want to start a podcast, and I tell them what they need to get. And like, man, I that sounds kind of expensive. Bro, I've like all my old stuff I've sent to people. Bro, here, bro, get a get on or start something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I that's that's that's why I do this, man. If I if I can help the next person out, I'm dumb doing it, man. Because I want like I wanted somebody to help me, and somebody helped me. Like, I didn't, they they just didn't didn't have to. They did have to kind of study hard. So I'm like, that's what I'm I'm gonna pay it for, man. And that's that's what it's all about, man. Is that's how we continue to build this community, man. It's and yeah, I can't stand gatekeepers, bro. Like, bro, I I've had people, I've reach out, and I could go on YouTube and look up how to tie a D loop. But I like it's people I'm like reaching out to hey man, teach me how to tie D loop. Oh that's hard, bro. Man, I don't I I just know how to do it for myself, man. Cook man, then teach me how you do it then. Right, right, right, yeah, help me, man, help me, but like cat's not, and I was just portrait enough where I had a bow shop where the owner was like, Hey man, look, I'm gonna put you under my wing, I'm gonna teach you all this stuff. And I'm I'm learning here and there still. So eventually one day I'll have my own bow shop. That's that's the goal, but um yeah, it's all it's all about getting back, man. If you can get your foot in the door, bro, you you you might not be able to take everybody with you, but man, you might be able to get one or two.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, and if if we if we spread in this um just make growing the community, help grow the community, man. Because I'm telling you what, I keep saying it all the time, especially in my lives. I'm like, I've met a lot of good people so far. Man, one of the guys I was just shooting with uh uh on Sunday, I went to a a uh a pro shop sometime last year, just checking it out. And I didn't know they was there. And I was like, okay, I'm gonna, you know, again, I'm you guys. I'm like, okay. Man, everybody in there either was military or did the same job I did, you know. So and so we was always connecting. And then we, me and the guy, his name is Marco, we should we were shooting there, and then we just we just hit it off. The man, he a couple days later, he hit me up on my TikTok, hey, I'm so unstored that you know, Matthew. He goes, Man, I used to watch your videos before you even came down to the shop. I was like, that's ironic, because I'm like, bro, I'm just a nobody. You know, he's like, Yeah, I've I just watch the videos. And from that point on, we switched numbers, and you know, we just go shoot. Like, we'll go, we'll link up and we'll go shoot. Actually, we're going in in Missouri to go to a three-day archery shoot, you know. And uh, yeah, we're bringing our wives and everybody just gonna meet up. We're gonna shoot and we're just gonna have a good time. And so that's that's another thing. Like this community, just meeting people, meeting people and and socializing and and getting your name out there and stuff like that. Like, it's like your thing. It's gonna be exciting and fun. Like, it's gonna be nerving because I'm always like, you know, it's weird meeting new people sometimes, you know, but it's gonna be a good thing to step outside your comfort zone and actually, you know, be like, hey, this is what I'm on, I'm just a new guy in the game, you know. At that time, I'll have a what a year and a half, still new into the game. So it's like it's gonna be fun to meet new people, marketing, whatever, socializing, branching out, and talking, you know, war stories, so to speak, if you want to say, oh, hey, what works for you, you know.

SPEAKER_00

That's what it's gonna be like, man, sitting around a campfire, sharing stories, man. We're gonna have uh breakout sessions where we got a guy who uh his name is Chris, he's out of New Mexico. He owns a company called Zulu Archery. He does guided joke hunts, guided multier hunts. He's gonna teach guys look, if you want to hunt out west, this is what you got to do. You know, this is the tax you got to apply for. This is how this state does it. If you're looking for a guide, this is what to look for in the guide. We're gonna have a guide that you know, he builds arrows. He's gonna teach people how to build arrows. We're gonna all have an arrow set. We're gonna be building. So it just is gonna be hands-on. I want people to leave better than they came, you know what I'm saying? Not just as an artist, as a man as well. We're gonna have we we got cats that's gonna be 18 years old to cats that you know in their you know, upper 50s and 60s. So it's it's gonna be just a big learning session, man. And I hope everybody comes and enjoys it. And I I just I I can't wait to it's it's gonna be dope, man. But hey Jay, before we got here, man, I got a question I asked all my guests every show. If someone called you right now and said, Jay, you can go anywhere in the world and hunt any animal you want, all expenses paid, where you're going and what you're hunting. The world.

SPEAKER_03

You know what? I I I think for me it would just it would be an elk only because I think it's simple. I think that um it's a big enough animal to where you're just like you you're getting that big game uh hunt and you can eat it. And uh I don't know, I just I'm I'm fascinated with just like I won't I would like to go definitely do an Elkhunt. Everybody I've been like Archer is just like, yeah, I I love Elkhun. Like I didn't get a draw this year, but I gotta, you know, I gotta draw, whatever. And I just they I listened to how what they did, and like, you know, oh yeah, I went over here and this happened, you know, I had this this mishap, but then you know, I was able to go recover and I went over here and you know, so it's like I didn't kill anything yet, but it was just the experience itself was phenomenal. I'm like, okay, I want to do that. Like I can I can white tail hunt here in Illinois. Like I can, there's plenty of public land here. Like, and I have I have friends that have 30 acres that I can, he's like, hey, you can go on my own. Okay, cool, great. So I can I can do that all day long. I could travel to Texas and shoot Havelinas and pigs and whatever. Like, I can do that. But um I don't know what it is. It's something like just listen to people like Elk Hunt, and I've talked to several different people that say Elk Hunt, and there's like, bro, it's just something about it.

SPEAKER_00

That journey, bro, it's it's the hardest thing. You play any sports or anything? Yeah, I play baseball. Bro, let me tell you something. Think of your hardest baseball workout times that by 50. But every it's every day when you're out there on that mountain. It's it's not like white toe hunting, man. Season come and season like I can go sit out in the woods, whatever. Elk hunting, if you know you going elk hunting starting in January. If in January you say I'm going elk hunting, you better start working out. I'm talking about cardio, getting your dye right, shooting. I what what like what what can I have in my pack? Getting your pack ready. It is a year-long process. This ain't no all elk season, elk season next week. I'm just gonna go ahead and start getting my stuff together a week before. No, you getting stuff ready months in advance, especially the business side of it. Like my first elk hunt, 10 minutes in, I thought I was gonna die. I I looked to my buddy Rick and said, dude, I'm gonna die out here. He's like, nah, bro, just keep pushing. And this is 10 minutes in. We walking up the side of this mountain. And I was like, Oh my gosh, this is I didn't train for this. Yeah. The next time I went, I was ready physically. I'm like, let's go. And then it's that mental thing. Now it's like, all right, I'm I can I'm tackling the mountain physically, but man, we we walking 10, 15 miles, ain't seen nothing, going back to camp. Get up the next day, you're tired. You probably got, you know, you stayed up the whole night talking about what we're gonna do the next day. You go to bed probably midnight, get up at four o'clock. All right, cool. Eat a little something, you're walking through the woods. I had to get over my fear of walking in the dark because you gotta get up early, dark, walking, creeping. Okay, oh, we see we hear elk. Oh, we got a shot. Oh man, we we blew the shot. Now you got to regroup. And it's we know we go for like a week, week and a half. And bro, by day eight, dude, you just you dragging, you just you reaching down in your gut to be able just to keep putting that leg, that foot in front of your other foot. That's all you're doing. And it's I haven't been successful yet. Haven't harvested nothing yet. But I learned something. I've only been three times, and I learned something every single time that I know that when I finally do put an arrow through, I don't care if it's a cow or a bull. I'm gonna lose it because I know what I put into it. It's it's a it's a journey, man. Like you put your body through so much, man. That's why when you watch some of these videos, man, and these dudes get their first help, but they man, they they lose it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, which makes sense, which makes sense. And another than cavalier, I think you did have success in those three times because like you say, you learn something every time. Yeah, but yeah, the the end goal is to you know harvest an animal, but like you say, you learn something every single time. So either way, it's success. And it's not even easy to get to that point where you're doing it, like you said, three three times. Do you know what I mean? So um, but yes. Now, Yeah, I'm always thinking like, man, those guys just lose their minds when when they when they get that kill. And it's just like, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So much going to it. Now I will give you some advice that I didn't have given to me. You can do it two ways. You can you can DIY it. You can put your name in the draw, draw a tag, find a spot in Colorado to go, a unit, go hunting and bushwhack and and and learn and learn on the job. Or a more experienced hunter told me this. He said, Man, if it's your first time, he said, What you should have done was go with a guide your first time. Save with the money, pay for a guide. And when you don't just have that guy take you and guide you to an elk, pick his brain. Hey, why are you doing that? Why are we hunting here? And learn from him. He goes, You might do it one time and go on your own, or you might do it twice, and then that third time go out on your own. He said, But you're not going out blind your very first time. I wish I would have done that. Now I'm I'm too invested in. I'm not going, I I gotta get one on my own now. I'm not going to no guide. Right. I did tell my if we don't if we don't kill nothing this year, then I'll get a guide.

SPEAKER_03

But so you so you're going soon.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm going in September.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay. Nice. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm going in September. And uh and like, but every year we've had a shot, like the very first time we went, dude, the first day we walking back to camp. Because I was like, well, we gotta get back before it gets darker. We had walked a long ways out, so yeah. It was like probably like three o'clock, three, three thirty. We're walking back. And dude, my buddy his eyes get big, he goes, Bro, look, and I turn and dude, this bull is running, smoking right towards us. So we like try to get set up, but by the time we could like get positioned, he had closed that gap. He like we ranged him, he was 80 yards, and by the time we could get set up, he had closed that 50 yards, he was at like 30 yards. So now so but it was between him and us was this big spruce tree. So he had walked to the left of it, his head was sticking out, but his vitals were covered about a tree. And I'm like, I'm at full draw. I'm like, man, come on, take one more step. Like you, it's right there. Yeah, the wind changed. I was I it felt like I was at full draw forever. It was only like 15-20 seconds, but that wind changed, he got my scent and took off. Gone and I was like, I let down and do all that adrenaline just dropped. I was like, bro, I'm not gonna be able to walk back to camp. Like, I I I gotta gather myself. I mean, he he was probably the six by six, but he was a young, he was young, but he was he was legal, I was gonna take him. And yeah, uh, so we didn't and we never saw another elk that week. And then the next time we went, we had a cow walk out at 40 yards on the it was that was the second morning, and I was like, bro, I'm gonna take her. And we heard a limb break, it was like, well, something's behind her, and we waited to see what was coming behind her, and she took off, and whatever was behind her, it's it circled us to get our way. Third time, we didn't see nothing, so it's just it's it's gonna it's gonna come, man. It's gonna come, and when it does, it's gonna come. Hey, bro. I just I I I enjoy the journey, man. I enjoy being out in the mountains, being in God's creation, being there with my best friend, just enjoying the hunt, man. Because we come back with stories, man. Like, you know, like one time, dude. I first very first time I bought some cheap hunting boots. Second day, the second day, my left boot blew out, my foot hanging all out. Third day, my right boot blew out. I got duct tape wrapped around these boots. Man, we got back the end of town. I took them juggers off and threw them in the trash and wrote that company a very foul letter. Like, bro, I mean, it was my fault. I thought $50 hun boots, man. That's a deal, right? Right. So you know, so now I got some decent boots, but we just come back all kinds of stories, man. Just you know, yeah, all things happen, man. But man, I just I enjoy it. I got a question.

SPEAKER_03

So, what what if what because you're going in September? What have you done so far to prepare for this one?

SPEAKER_00

Bruh, I go, I got a I get my pack and I got this thing called Oh, it's in my garage. It's called a pack out strong. So I filled it, filled up. I got 75 pounds of sand in it. Put it on my back. I go on a walk in the morning, and I go on a walk in the afternoon. Uh, I didn't go today, but I go on a walk in the afternoon. Probably I probably walk about two miles and then walk back to the house. Um, get up in the morning, I go to the gym every morning. I I've stopped doing like Olympic style workouts. Like, I'm not training for football anymore. This is I'm training for the mountain. So a lot of a lot of mobility workouts, a lot of stretching, a ton of cardio, a ton of cardio. Like I started this year out, I was like 260. I kind of gained a little weight. It's like 260. Like now I'm like 230. All right, around 230. I'm trying to get down to about 215. Um, I don't know if that's that's kind of I've never I ain't been 215 since fresh year in college. So that'd be great to try to get get down that much. Um my only thing that I need to cut out is like these right here. I gotta, I gotta cut, cut, cut these bathrooms out, yeah, the caffeine out. Start, I hate drinking water, but you gotta do it. So I try to drink water. I try to do gallon a day, man. Like, you know, I try to drink three of these a day. Yeah. Just doing that and and eating right, man. Cutting out the sweets, which is my is my weakness, man. I I love ice cream and chocolate cookies are my thing. So couldn't, I cut out sweets probably about a month ago. So about siptime September comes, I should be be Gucci. But just chiseled. Yeah, just cardio, cardio, cardio, cardio. It's it's been my thing. Man, I got an assault bike in the garage. I close the garage door and I'll ride that joker, and man, there'll be a puddle of sweat underneath me. I'm just just gassing myself out and just putting my putting my basically putting my body through like a workout like I would do in in college, like just get to that point where you're about to just throw up, just kill yourself, basically. Yeah, so it sucks, but I know it's I have to do that because if I don't, I ain't gonna be ready. And bro, like if I don't make myself work out anything, or I'll get lazy, gain a bunch of weight like I have. So just like I gotta stay on top of it. But yeah, I've I've put myself through the ringer to get in shape for this because I don't want my uh opportunity to present itself, and the reason why I failed is because I was out of shape, right? Because the the the hard part is is once you put this is when you put the animal down. Now you gotta pack that bad boy out of there, and that's you looking at you know, if it's me and my buddy Rex, man, that's at least three to four trips. And that's you, and you can have 70 plus pounds on you know the the the hind quarters they say weigh about 75 pounds each. So you look that's it's grip, bro. So that's I carry one leg, he carry one leg. We go back, he gets a shoulder, I get a shoulder. Then we gotta get you know back straps. And if you like like me, bro, I'm I'm taking everything I can. I'm I'm scraping everything. I'm taking everything, make me all that. Then you gotta get the head, the head gonna be 75, 80 pounds. So right you gotta be able to move with it. And I the last thing I want is me to be hiking back and passed out because I'm I'm gassed, right? Right, especially the elevation too. Yes, bro. I got I got an elevation mask. That's how and I don't I've heard red reviews that say they really don't work that well, but I'm using it. I I need any even if it's if it's if it's it's only gonna improve my you know my uh oxygen level by three percent. Hey, that's three percent more than I had last year.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Colorado ain't no joke, man. That air, man. I remember the first time I went there, I got off that plane. I said, Can you breathe?

SPEAKER_00

I said, man, I'm struggling. That's exactly why I didn't go flip suitable in Colorado. I got I was uh I got offered by the Air Force Academy, and uh I went out there and it was like yeah, then we get in the field and run some run some drills on you know what? I'm good, I'm out. I'm not coming here. Yeah, I'm out, I'm out, yeah. Man, that that air, ooh, boy. Yeah, it's it's something else, man. But man, something else. But Jay man, I love this conversation. Man, I could talk to you about another two or three hours, man. But I gotta get that set tonight. Me too, man. I gotta work tomorrow. But before we get out of here, man, let the dread listeners know where they can find you on all social media platforms.

I respond a lot of DMs. I got one guy reached out to me, wanted to send me some stuff. So um, yeah, I got I got people always reached out to me, asking questions. So I always try to respond as quickly as I can. Uh, always try to interact. But yeah, man, I'm just I'm just an average guy that is obsessed with archery. And uh, yeah, that's where you can find me.
