From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

Summer Series Top Ten: The Healing Way - Rose Hammock

Suzanne Maggio Season 2 Episode 50

“With what I have learned, it’s my turn to pass on the knowledge to the next generation,” says Rose Hammock, a  wise young member of the Pomo, Wailacki and Maidu tribes.

Despite Rose Hammock’s young age, she’s only 26, she has already made a lasting mark on her community.  She dedicates herself to sharing this wisdom with the youth of her community.“Through traditional dance, I have had the honor of learning many things from my elders,” she says. “I have had the honor of learning how to basket weave, bead, sew, and learn about plants. My hopes are that our young people will carry this on to future generations.”

Many of us know so little about the history, traditions and culture of our first generation. For example, we recorded this interview on May 5, the day of remembrance for missing and murdered Indigenous Women, a profound  historical trauma that continues to plague the Native people.

As you listen to this episode, consider:

  • What are the cultural traditions of your own heritage? How do those traditions help create your identity?
  • Where can I open myself to learning about the values and traditions that are different than my own?
  • How can I support creating space for different traditions and practices in my own community?

Do you know someone who has a story to tell? Someone who is giving back to their community? Working to make our world a better place? Send an email to suzanne@suzannemaggio.com. Nominate them for a future episode of From Sparks to Light.
