Gilbert and Estevan talk about the 25 years since Smallville first aired on television and Gilbert makes a tribute to Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullin.
Alright, hey guys, so we're just gonna have this played out before we get to our episode because we recorded our episode days before a lot of things had happened. I would say the first thing is I got to see Leonard Skinner live. I'll talk about a lot more in the next episode. But my friend Steve and I redid this episode long before the events of the previous week had happened, or the event of the next week would have happened, which is like the previous week before this episode comes out. Basically, what I'm saying is that we were unaware that the couple of days after doing that episode, we were gonna lose Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Collins all in one week. And it sucks because it's like Dolly Parton and Tim Curry died the exact same team. Most people kind of forget that because we didn't get the news about Tim Curry's death until the next day, but he died later on that day, which is with Dolly. She died earlier that day. But yeah, it's tough. And then Peter Collins. Come on, man, that's Optimus Prime. But I'm on everybody else's boat. Somebody go and find like some of the all our old actors and be like, hey, don't do anything for a while. Like for my horror fans. I mean, somebody go out and protect Robert England, Tobin Bell, Nick Castle, Kane Hodder, Brad Durf, whatever you're doing, Brad, stay away from that Alibaba, Zimbabwe, whatever that Chucky thing is. Who else? Caroline Williams from Texas Chainsaw. Basically, just protect a lot of our horror fans, but even for some of our non-horror, like Martha Stewart, Merle Streep, Piers Brosnan, Bruce Greenwood. But the truth be told, is that everybody always says like when you see folks like Dolly, Dolly Parton, first of all, I'm very I was very pissed off people were making her death political. Like why you're just spinning in the name of Dolly Parton, disrespecting her and her family, especially because like her legacy was that she just wasn't political at all. So I'm just gonna say this. Fuck you for that. Fuck you. Okay? But yeah, man, what the hell's going on with 2026, bro? Like we lost a lot of good folks. And like I said, my grandmama died earlier this year, the day before Catherine O'Hara died. Speaking of that, man, this year for Home Alone 2, it's gonna be weird. Like almost half the cast is gone. Like John Heard died nine years ago, and then this year three of the cast members died. Catherine O'Hara, Brenda Fricker, and now Tim Curry. But I mean rest in peace to all of them, praise to them and their family. Yeah, that's about it just yeah, 2026 just needs to chill. This is worse than 2016. I remember back in 2016 a lot of folks died. Like the mother-daughter duo of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, dude, that like blew my mind. Because it was like days apart from each other, because Carrie Fisher went out first, and then Debbie later. And then like, what is that in the beginning of the year? Alan Richardson and or sorry, Alan Rickman. I'm sorry. Alan Richardson's somebody else, but that we're actually gonna talk about later on in this episode. But yeah, I meant to say Alan Rickman and David Bowie both passed away, a lot of good folks, but man, I just go back to Tony Todd. Like, Tony Todd was the one celebrity that's even that year was I think James Earl Jones, where so many celebrities were passing that year, but like James Earl Jones and Tony Todd can became more of an awakening for me, especially with Tony Todd. Because I said multiple times I've met Tony Todd, he was such an awesome guy. And when I see like that last scene of him in the Final Destination Bloodlines, that line where he says, Life is precious, enjoy every second of it, you never know when. Which we all know that's literally him talking to us, like not just to the people in the movie, but to the fans of not just Final Destination, but fans of him in general. This is why, like that, that's kind of the reason I don't talk politically. Because I'm not gonna waste my time talking about politics. And I think a lot of y'all shouldn't either. And actually I think maybe y'all should delete your s what is it, your TikTok accounts. I've never had TikTok, and I'm so glad I never went down that road, but I get what he says, and he's right. Life is precious, enjoy every second of it, because in an interview he said, you know, we all have a time to go, because he didn't even say he's not immortal, because the immortality we were never given. In all honesty, immortality sounds like it would suck. Because it's like you get to see you see all your your loved ones pass before you and you stay the same and the world changed. I don't think that's a good feeling, but yeah, that's just a little PSA I can say. Other than that, I do have my Indiegogo account, it's finally up. Now we can I can officially say go out and start funding. I think it's fund until the first week of October or the second week. I gotta go back. But Indiegogo account, go look up Tough Love Pictures on YouTube and Patreon, and then just yeah, and help me fund that my project. And if you don't, uh that's fine. Word of mouth and prayer will also go a long way. Anyway, enjoy the episode. Alright, guys, and welcome to the podcast. I got Stevin back again for another episode.
SPEAKER_00Have you been on here the most or what?
SPEAKER_01No, actually it's a Seuss has been here the most. Um Zeus. Forget that guy, bro.
SPEAKER_00Put me on a few more times.
SPEAKER_01Uh oh yeah, we will eventually, yeah. But yeah, I was talking with Steven, I was like, what can we talk about? And then I thought, you know, I met someone over the summer, and it's funny enough, I just saw an Instagram post about the guy too. Nothing bad or anything, it's just about it, somebody who met him. But let's just say you're a kid back in 2001, I believe. It's fall, and you just start watching a show of a superhero that hasn't been done in ever, I'm assuming. And next thing you know, all you just hear is somebody save me. Oh, dude. I love it.
SPEAKER_00I knew actually, I didn't even so when it small book came out, what, 2001?
SPEAKER_01I believe so. So that's why I want to talk about it. It's been 25 years and my math is right since that show came out.
SPEAKER_00I was uh nine and I didn't even watch it then. Really? I didn't watch it probably until like 2006.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, the show was still going around then.
SPEAKER_00It was still on, yeah, because it was ten seasons, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But I was thinking I was like, who sings that? It's like Remy Zero. Remy Zero, yeah. Yeah, but I think when they did the song, if my memory serves, it wasn't intentionally for the show, it just happened that way.
SPEAKER_00They just found that it would be a good pick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And they were right. Yeah, but yeah, we're talking about Small Vol. Like I said, over the summer I met the great Tom Welling. He was such an awesome guy. And then earlier today, oh actually, just not like a couple of minutes ago, I saw Instagram post. And as y'all know, I followed this, well, I wouldn't say I follow this guy, but there's this oh wow, there's this guy on uh social media, he goes to conventions like I do, but he goes and he gives celebrities a hand printed Bible along with a book called The Case for Christ, which was I think about a lawyer that tried to disprove tried to disprove it, yeah. Yeah, and yeah, he just goes around and stuff like that. And he usually says stuff like this person was appreciative of his Bible, just keep praying for them. And yeah, it's funny enough that I see that post like today of all days when I'm about to do this, but yeah, we're talking about Small Vo. I knew I had a frame for this, like about like how am I gonna do this? I kind of already forgot. I think majority I do want to talk about first is when did you discover Small Vill, Steven?
SPEAKER_00I remember I think my sister was because my sister's seven years older than me, and I think she was watching it when it came out, and I didn't even really know what it was about. Like I remember seeing the name of it, and I was like, what the hell is this show? And then it wasn't until like a few years later that I found out it was about Superman, and I'm like, I gotta watch this. And then I fell in love with the show and I've seen it like a cornucopious amount of times by now. So that's probably like 13, 14.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I would say I discovered well, I wouldn't say I discovered I've heard about it for a while, but around like 11 years ago, I started getting into the shows like The Flash and Arrow and stuff like that. And people will like give a lot of credit to Small Vo because Small Vo appeared on the WB long before the CW ever became a thing.
SPEAKER_00That's right, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm assuming they might have changed it because of like Warner Brothers or stuff like that, because I think that's what WB stands for. But I decided to be like, okay, let's see where I can find this, but I didn't have money, so I didn't have a Hulu account or whatever you could have found at the time. So my late grandma bought it for me, and it was a big set. When I found out, I kind of already knew Tom Wellington was gonna be in San Antonio a month in advance. But I was like, you know what? Why don't I get that big box set autograph? Because that would have been cool. Because it wasn't just Tom that was there, it was also Laura Vanderbilt who played Cara as well as Oh my gosh, she's beautiful. Yeah, Erica who played Lois Lane, and even Alan Richson, who was supposed to be there for and if y'all didn't know Alan Richson Aquaman, yeah, he was Aquaman. So I was like, this would be cool, right? You know where that set was? It was in my car, the car that got stolen.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's right. I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so yeah, I never saw that set ever again. Anyway, but yeah, uh, I was just binge watching it for a third day. First time I binge watched it was about actually 10 years ago, and I don't know what to expect because the the first thing I saw from Tom Welling was cheaper by the dozen, and then I think it was in um draft day or moneyball. It was like a sports movie. I don't remember exactly which one, but I know he was in one of those. He didn't really do a lot, right? He just did his thing and he bounced. Yeah, yeah, he did that. The last like big thing I remember him in was Lucifer, and he played Oh, okay. Yeah, I never saw it. It was a pretty interesting, but he played a detective, and that detective turned out to be Kane. Like Kane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Kane and Abel?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that kind of cane. Yeah, yeah, where his backstory it was he wanted to die. Because if you know the lore, if people out there who know the lore about it, when Kane killed Abel, God bestowed him on a mark and said no man should ever kill Kane. And sometimes they took that literal as in like he just never died. So that was kind of his go. Yeah, I guess you could say his go or whatever. But that's about it. Surprisingly, he still sounds the same as he did 25 years ago. But I mean it's not you'd be surprised how many celebrities like they age, but their voice for some reason doesn't. Like this voice actor Dante Vasco, who voiced Zuko and Avatar, Jake and American Dragon, Rufio and Hook with the late great Robin Williams. His voice sounds the same in all of them, and he's 50 years old. Yeah, yeah. So it's very it's like, bro, so everything just age, but that part doesn't.
SPEAKER_00But the voice, yeah, that's interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I benched all 10 seasons in like about a month. And oh damn, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, so yeah, that's crazy work, yeah. That's good timing.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's because like it was 10 seasons, and each of them were about 23, 20 to 23 episodes. Crazy long seasons, dude. It is. Do you ever feel like it ran too long, or do you feel like he okay, cool? Where do you think they should have ended off at?
SPEAKER_00Man, so I haven't dude. I'm gonna be honest, I haven't seen it in a while. But I've seen it multiple times. It's just been many years since I've seen it, like the last time, but I think they should have ended it like around season six, they should have found their way to wrap that up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think they focus so much on like let's just you know, get all these quote unquote Superman characters because when you watch it, it's technically not really it's a Clark Kent show, it's not a Superman show. That's always been the biggest misconception. Like, even at the end of the show, where like we see him fly for the first time, which guys, if you haven't seen the show, it takes him 10 whole seasons just to learn how to fly.
SPEAKER_00And well, they always promised. I think the writers always promised that it was never going to happen. Really? But in the end, yeah, like that was the tagline was like no, I forget what it was, but it was like no tights or something like that. So I think they never wanted to do it, but in the end, I think they're like the fans need some payoff for like staying with us for 10 seasons. That's and it was like what, like 10 seconds worth?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and not only that, within those few seconds worth when he had the suit on, Tom never really had put on the suit. It was a CG suit. Yeah. Okay, I understand for a little bit, but because he also wore Superman S clothing, like he always wore like a blue t shirt, yeah, with um the red overalls or vice versa. But I will say, despite all this, it's actually still a very great show that makes things very compelling.
SPEAKER_00Yep. I think one of the things that I really my admin to cut you off, but no, go ahead. One of the things that I really love about it is their decision to make like Clark and Lex friends. Just at two different periods of his life. So Lex is like a little mentor, but he's always trying to tell him I guess in a way he helps him out in certain ways to get him more, you know, to be a little bit less selfless, but at the same time, he's obviously trying to corrupt him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's the thing, is that like I think that's kind of one of the reasons why maybe this first thing, I want to focus more on that, Lex Luthor, because he's my favorite. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, him and Clancy Brown. If y'all don't know, Clancy Brown voiced Lex Luthor in the animated shows. Yeah, which is funny because he also voiced Mr. Krabs, too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Dude, I never knew that until like two years ago. Really? Yeah, that's crazy to me. Yeah. Hey, can we all agree that the worst Lex Luther is what's his name? Jesse Eisenberg. Horrible. Absolutely. Dude, I'm sorry. I don't know how I know we're not here to talk about that, but I like abhor that movie so much. Batman versus Superman. I think it's like one of the worst comic book movies of all time. I think like I hated every second of it. I mean, obviously, except for the little short scene of them fighting, I'm like, this movie is bad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think that's just because Zack Snyder and even Warner Brothers were just like, let's just put it in there. Because at that time they were trying to compete with Marvel. And I think they weren't focusing on building a universe, they were just focusing on now Marvel's doing this, we got to do this and stuff like that. And plus, it's on like the same year that Civil War came out, which is another like superhero movie where two heroes are at it against each other, opposing each other.
SPEAKER_00You know, actually, this is what I was gonna bring up when you were talking about it earlier being a Clark Kent show is that in a way, like Clark Kent is really the like, you know, I think with Batman and Superman, it's like the reverse to where Bruce is really Batman, like he just cannot let it go. You know, he needs to be Batman. Whereas Clark is actually he has a life, like he has love and he has a job and he does things, and he has to be Superman, you know what I mean? So I think it's like it's a Clark Kent story, but really Clark Kent is the he's the one that makes Superman Superman in a sense, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's interesting because at one point I heard somewhere they thought about doing having Bruce Wayne, not specifically Batman, but Bruce Wayne in the show. But then that was the year Nolan came out was Batman Begins, and it became a big hit. So they're like, okay, we'll figure something out, and that's where eventually a few years later we get Green Arrow into the mix.
SPEAKER_00Because even Arrow mentions, right? Like, I'm going to Gotham in one of the episodes or some shit like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's so funny how like you see Justin Hartley in this one, and then now he was in um what was that show he did? This is Us. This is Us. My mind was thinking The Last of Us for some reason, but yeah, it's a great show. It's so we're and like when we were talking about Anna Richardson playing Aquaman or Arthur Curry, there is a pilot episode of an Aquaman show. With what's his name, right? Uh Lou Diamond Phillip, who was the dad of Arthur Curry, and of course Justin Hartley. Justin Hartley as the Aquaman, yeah. Yeah, but it was a whole different story. It was based like because you know with the Momoa story, it was he's half man, half Atlantean. But what this story goes is he was gonna be full Atlantean, that his birth father was the original king of Atlantis who was overthrown. And when him and his mother escaped when he was like a baby, he was taken in by a captain that was played by Lou Diamond Phillips of all folks. We're I'm eventually gonna talk about him next week because I'm I'm gonna talk about La Bamba and Stana Deliver. Because I saw that movie for the first time last week, I believe.
SPEAKER_00I haven't seen that in forever, dude.
SPEAKER_01It's actually really good. I'm surprised. But back to the Michael Rosenbaum thing, Lex Luthor is not his only um comic book role. Um, most people don't know. He played Wally West, the Flash, and the Justice League animated show, as well as um Michael Rosenbaum?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, oh wow, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he even played Kit Flash in an episode of Teen Titans and what else? I don't know how well you remember Guardians 2.
SPEAKER_00Very well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so you remember that crystal headed alien that was part of the Ravagers? That's yes, that's Michael Rosenbaum as well. Oh, it is, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I didn't know that. I know he's like pretty good friends, right? With uh what's his name's brother? Uh which one? Uh the director, uh James Gunn's brother. Uh I know that he's he knows them. But I know he had him on the podcast, his his brother, I believe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Sean Gunn. I think that was yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it's interesting because like, are you okay? Yeah, I just uh I was working out, so I feel like my nose is all running because I was freaking all heated up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just a little side note. Um, I worked out earlier today too, and dude, it was an hour on a on the fucking stationary bike. You cannot get off if you're an hour on that bike.
SPEAKER_00Oh, because you feel weird?
SPEAKER_01It's not that you feel weird. It's like every like the boys down there are like crushed pretty much down there. Oh. So like some some sometimes I'll do that.
SPEAKER_00U-runner. You have you seen that U-Runner?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I seen that one.
SPEAKER_00And whenever you get off of it, it feels like the ground's all weird. Yeah, your legs are all weird too.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, to my point, like I was uh going back to Michael. He they thought of a space gun, which hold on, I have the cat here. This is like a souvenir at the convention I went to where I met um Tom. But they thought about getting Michael, however, Michael had some kind of sickness. He never really disclosed it, but he couldn't book any spring or summer conventions. He couldn't book them and he had to cancel them too. So, but I think he's starting to get back on track. He's gonna be in Houston, I think, in October. So maybe Mike wanna check that one out. Hopefully he comes to San Antonio for another convention. I've never been a big I've never been a big convention guy. Yeah, I mean it's like not for everyone. I mean, I went one last week where I met the actor play Kratos from Gods of War. Did you hear about Batista getting cast? Well, he's half Greek, so it counts.
SPEAKER_00I think he's a great actor, but I think he's the best actor to come out of the WWE, so I'm pretty excited about it.
SPEAKER_01Actually, let's get to that one. Most people don't know Batista, that's where he got to start with Smallville.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah. I forgot. He's one of the like he comes with Martian Manhunter, right? To to find Martian Manhunter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I think because yeah, for those that don't know, in that season, if you ever noticed, most of the seasons is really Clark fucking up like so much. One of them is he got trapped in the Phantom Zone, but when he left, he accidentally brought a lot of phantoms with him. And uh I forgot about that. But Batista wasn't yeah, Batista Kane, I think, was also in there as well. Kane's in there. Kane's also a really nice guy. I met I had a chance to meet him. Big hand. I mean, like, it's like two hands put into one.
SPEAKER_00Isn't he like a mayor or a some sort of a politician?
SPEAKER_01He was a mayor, I think, at a city in California, if I'm not mistaken, or um somewhere. He's some sort of a public official, right? Like, yeah, like he's a mayor, but I think like it's one of the few like red cities that he runs in a very blue state. You get what I mean? Ah, got you. Yeah, I think that's really what it was. Talk to me about Smallville, bro. Yeah, Smallville. But like the other thing is I'm looking up the castings too, because I kind of want to stick with this real quick. And it's so weird how like a lot of these folks were in the show, like Ian Summerholder for all you vampire diary fans or lost fans, whichever one. Never saw either of them. Me either. I saw I seen Lost, I wasn't really a big vampire diary, Jensen Eagles, too, right? Jensen Accles, yeah. So for a while, Aaron Ashmore, I thought was his brother, or I didn't even know he was he had a twin, Aaron Ashmore who played Jimmy Olsen. Oh yeah. Because for a while, I thought that was the actor who played Iceman and the Iceman. It's not no, it's his twin brother, they're twins.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so if you ever go back to the first episode and then he comes back in the second episode, his twin brother plays he plays a character where uh he takes Clark's powers for like a day because they're remiss. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Electrical, right? When he gets electrocuted, yeah. There's some I'm surprised I remember so much of this. Yeah, I love Smallville.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's a lot they like I wish they cover too. Like I'm looking at Eric Johnson. He if you remember Whitney Foreman, like he was the bully who was originally Lana's boyfriend at the first. Oh yeah. I kind of wish he did a lot. Yeah. Well, Tyler Posey, I forgot he did an episode too. It's like it has to do with immigration and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember, yeah. Yeah. Pretty much like his mom's running for some sort of right, like district council or or something. She's running for something, right? And he's like harboring a freaking immigrant.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he's also like an immigrant.
SPEAKER_01It's not necessarily true, but but yeah, there's a lot of things here. Actually, one thing to go back to, I remember you posting, I don't even rem I don't know if you remember posting it on your snap, which if you guys ever want to check him out, check him out, check his snap out. I remember it was like the episode where like Clark first discovered his heat vision, but it's like, how did he discover his heat vision?
SPEAKER_00Oh no, yeah, he gets turned on by his teacher.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it's like there's a clip that you mentioned where I think you said like Papa Ken teaching rat or something like that, where you know he's teaching him how to be a man, but also how do you control your powers?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then you just got that music playing. And it's interesting because I I want to talk about John Schneider for a little bit. For a while. Yeah, for a while he didn't have a job because his early years, I believe, was the Duke of Hazards. Which, you know, you bring the car up now, it'd be kind of contrary. Controversial because if you've seen the roof of the car, it has a southern flag. I joke around with my brother-in-law about that, to be honest with you. And uh my brother-in-law, he's an immigrant, he's also pretty racist, so he said I wouldn't mind that flag. Nice. Yeah, but I like that guy. I don't even know him, but I like him. Yeah, for a while he didn't have anything, and you know who got him back on his feet? Johnny Cash. Oh, really? Yeah. Interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I gotta do a Johnny Cash episode one of these days, but dude, he was such a he was a great, he was a perfect Paw Kent, man. I don't know how you feel about uh freaking Man of Steel, but Kevin Costner. Yeah, Kevin Costner. I'm not a fan of the whole like maybe you do gotta let him die. I'm like, come on, bro. Do you not understand the Yeah?
SPEAKER_01Maybe it's because like with Paw Kent here, with Jonathan here in the show, it's because you have five seasons to know the guy. Yeah, you have night five seasons to know the guy versus was Man of Steel. You kind of just have to go back and forth.
SPEAKER_00He just comes across as very like sincere in like what he's trying to teach Clark versus Kevin Costner, who is a lot more like I'm like, I mean, I know they don't know the extent of of Clark's powers that maybe he's like indestructible and all those things, but it's like, how are you gonna tell your son who has powers not to save people? You know what I mean? It's just like that's the whole point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's also interesting that Annette O'Toole, for a lot of folks, Annette O'Toole, if you know her from it, she came out in the original 1990 series. She also played Lana Lang and the Superman movie, I believe. Oh, that's right. Yeah, Superman 3. And that's the thing. This is like a lot of a lot of old Superman like actors characters came back. Yeah. So like Christopher Reese came back for, I believe, a couple of episodes. Said they never got Gene Hackman, but well, I mean, he was alive still at the time, but I'm just saying, I kind of wish they brought him in. It would have been an interesting episode to see like Michael Rosenbaum and Gene Hackman, like a scene or two together. Yeah. Yeah. John Glover, I did not know that for John Glover is the guy who plays Lionel Luther, Lex's father. Which I mean, dude, he was a fucking asshole in the beginning.
SPEAKER_00He he was a good he was a good character, man.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, he's horrible, just deplorable that the whole way through, but great character. Well, yeah. But it gets complicated like throughout the the seventh season when like he became aware of like powers.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, he gets like uh he gets like uh possessed, right, by something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he gets he's possessed by Jarrell. That's right. Yeah, and that's the other thing is that last year we not only lost Gene Hackman, I think we lost Terrence Malik, I think. Oh, here it is. Terence Stamp, who was the voice of Jarrell, but he was General Zod and the Superman movies.
SPEAKER_00Oh, really? Yeah, I had no idea.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and yeah, there's a lot of cool episodes.
SPEAKER_00My favorite one of my favorite You go too much into the casting, I don't give a shit about the casting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it's also like this kind of what brings it back over here. But another thing is that like this also introduced other live action, you know, characters. This actually the first time we get a live action cyborg. And so we had Flash, Flash, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I love that episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's uh because like when you go to when you discover Lee Thompson Young, it's like I think uh back in like 2012, he well, Chris Duckman's not Chris Duckman, Cody Leach said took himself out of the equation.
SPEAKER_00Chris Duckman.
SPEAKER_01No, not Chris Duckman, Cody Leach. Because it was a whole episode, but it's like you learn a lot about his past, and it's like very sad. The actor played cyborgs, but oh yeah, yeah. I will say that it's a very interesting show if you guys haven't seen it. Like I said, it's 10 seasons, 23 episodes long. You pretty much to not have a life to like binge watch it at all.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you got yeah, if you get a binge watch, yeah. What is your like favorite parts of the show? What is the thing that sticks out to you the most?
SPEAKER_01My favorite part is obviously John because he's like there's something that's like I wouldn't say relatable or stuff like that. What it is is so nowadays, and this bugs me a lot considering like I'm not adopted, but I hate when people like look at a kid that's adopted and look at their parent that adopted them and be like, you're not, you know, the real father or you're not the real child and stuff like that. Where he says, or like Jarrell, you know, during the confrontations, always says, like, I am Khalel, because he never referred to Clark as Clark, you were always referred to him as Khalel. He always says, like, I am Khalel's father. But John says, I'm Clark's real father, I'm the one that raised him that teaches him. And yeah, that's kind of like what sticks me out. And then when they killed him off in the fifth season, I was like, dude, because that was that's their hundredth episode. And every like show, once they reach 100 episodes, they're like, we have to go big and bold. It was kind of a twist on that episode.
SPEAKER_00That was the night that uh that Lino goes to the thing, right? Lionel goes to the farm and starts saying he has the papers or he knows that was like because he forged the documents for because he was in love with Ma Kent.
SPEAKER_01I think so, yeah. Yeah, because this was I think him and Lex were running for senator. Oh, what's her name was, right? Wasn't it the wife? No. So what happened was for the fifth season, John. Well, yeah, John and Lex were running for senator. He won, but the night he won, that's when he died. And since there was an open seat, it went to his mom. Martha, yeah, that's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_00But Lionel goes there, right, and tells him, and that'd be like, you better not ever tell anybody, blah blah blah. And then he has a heart attack because he's overstressed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it sucks because it's like Clark was told because originally Lana dies. Oh, yes. And he went back to to fix it. Yeah. But Jarrell warned him, he warned him if you go back, you know, there's gonna be repercussions. Because we've even been told the like the season before, where Jarrell gave man, I'm remembering so much actually. Jarrell gave Jonathan some powers because I think Clark went on, like, I don't even remember. He ran away and like they needed to get him back. So Jarrell gave Jonathan powers, but he says it's gonna come at a cost. Oh yeah. So we knew also that was coming, but also people who read the comics, that also happens in the comics. But from what I found out, that actually didn't happen until I think after the first Superman movie. Because the first Superman movie, that's when his father died as well. And I think that's when they started using that. I could be wrong, guys, so don't like quote me on this. But from what I heard, that was never always the beginning of Superman. That's just oh, like in the yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00In the comments, like his dad's alive, yeah. Yeah, even in the shows a lot, he goes home and it's both of his parents, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like in the animated shows and stuff like that. In the recent film, too, his dad.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he's still alive. That's right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I would love to see gonna rub people the wrong way. I would love to see a movie where it's swiped, it's swap, where Marsa dies, and Jonathan is the one that's that has to be like, what am I gonna do? And it's when Clark is in high school, like a super boy movie without using the superboy moniker, where it's like now like Jonathan has to be a single father, but also learning how to cover his son's powers and all that stress, and like just get a regular low-life villain like Morgan Edge and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Morgan Edge is like a different Lex Luthor, yeah, not as cool, yeah, not as smart, not as cool, but but uh dude, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, some of the villains I want to talk about, like Brainiac. I've had some problems with him for a while. Not really like him as a character, but like he reminds me so much of like I don't know if you've ever seen Terminator 2, but that's what he reminds me of sometimes.
SPEAKER_00I haven't seen Terminators in a long time since I was a kid. So he's I don't mind him though. I really like him as a character, but not in the show. I mean, the show he was he was fine because he's sort of like he's just like a teacher at the local college, right? Like yeah, and then it like it gets revealed. But as far as like the comic book of him, he's sick.
SPEAKER_01He is. I know they're gonna bring him for the second Superman movie. Oh, are they? Yeah, there he's gonna be the villain. I think they already have the casting. I don't remember who, but yeah, and it's it were very interesting how like we see Lex become like the villain and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's one of my favorite parts of the whole show. It's just like it's so hard, and I think it just rings true to life. Like it's such a great lesson of like it you don't really know exactly where he becomes evil because he's sort of like not really he's trying his best to be good, he's learning a lot from Clark as well, but he just can't get over his father's shadow of like ingraining like evil into him and to teach him to do the wrong things, and he can't escape it. And it's like it's a subtle line between where do you become just like fully evil, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you know, well was the big kicker was you know, like when he kicked with Lana, yeah, it's that pretty much. But it's also like Clark always kind of knew or suspected that Lex is hiding secrets, and once he found dig it into him, yeah, once he found the truth, it was kind of like a tough pill to swallow.
SPEAKER_00What do you think about that? What do you think about when Lex tells him, like, like I was your brother, like you could have just told me from the beginning that you were Superman? Do you think if you would have told him, Lex would have been different?
SPEAKER_01Honestly, that's a tough one. But the thing is, you can't underestimate uh Luthor, as what Lino would say. So there's something down the line could have still provoked uh Lex to become what he was.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, but if earlier on, if Clark would have been like, hey, I trust you enough to tell you this thing, do you think that you know Lex wouldn't have felt that like a lot of his plans would have gotten sort of foiled by whatever's happening? You know, like Superman keeps sort of like undercutting Lex's plans, but obviously he can't really like say that that's what's going on. And I think whenever whenever he finds out he feels like a little bit like duped by it. I'm not saying he wouldn't have still been evil, but I think maybe it would have been a little bit he could have, I think Clark could have really helped him against Lionel if he would have just been like, hey.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. That's always been a tough one. And I think it's because I'm always so fixated on like how they started and where they ended. I think I never like put a lot of thought into what of the way they started just stayed, you know, stayed the way it was throughout the show.
SPEAKER_00But it's such a great way to start it where he saves Lex, and then the whole time Lex is like trying to buy his like friendship. Yeah, and then you have Jonathan telling him, like, look, man, all this shit that he's doing is not like that's not real. You know what I mean? It's not like a good way to go about friendships, it's just somebody buying you trucks. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And that's the thing. The one thing I love about this is that so I'm gonna talk about this and then I'm I gotta take a little break real quick, but just real quick, one thing I love is that like legit the final episode, we show that Lex is running for president, and we know in the comics he does eventually become president. And we get that flash forward where he like destroys everything. Yeah, he does become president and everything's yeah, the way it was. It's the only live action adaptation that's ever really done that. They've no other live ad like the supergirl show or the other movies never done that. I would love to see a movie where it's like uh Lex is president, but it becomes a uh what do you call it, like a White House down Olympus has fallen kind of a movie. You know how like when like people take over the White House to take down the president? Yeah, I've never seen those movies, but yeah, I mean Yeah, that's what I would expect it to be, where like Superman has to like save Lex, even though Lex is his arch enemy. Yeah, that'll be a good plot because you know Superman would do it. Yeah, and it's not only that, it's also like some of the public would be like, Superman, why can't you let Lex Luthor die? He's evil and stuff like that. And you know, Superman and like from Christopher Reeves' you know movies to I believe probably Dean Cain's. I've never seen those shows, so I can't really know for sure. But he's always fought for the truth, justice, and the American way, and could still probably say that. But it's also saying I can't let people die no matter if they are my enemy or not. Which I've always seen, like, despite him being a fictional character, I've always seen like Superman as more human than humans are, but I've also seen him a little bit more Christian than folks are, which is Well, I mean he's obviously he's obviously like a representation of Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_00I mean it's like Jorel sends his son to earth to save it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I do want to talk about more stuff, but I'm gonna take a quick break real quick and I'll be back. Hi, if you like this content and want to get an update on more content, follow us on Instagram under Tough Love Pictures and subscribe to our YouTube channel and to our Patreon under Tough Love Pictures, where you can get early access to the podcast as well as any other updates to Tough Love Pictures as well. Welcome back everybody. So one of the things I remember about the show so much, because some things I never knew until I binge watched the show again, because the first you wouldn't notice it the first time around, but when you rewatch it again, this movie. I mean, this movie, this show's got some pretty good music too. Oh, dude, it has great music, bro. Yeah, such good music. Because I remember, and this one actually like stayed with me the first time I ever saw it.
SPEAKER_00So Leila.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. But I remember the first episode, they played everything by Lighthouse, and I was like, What? Because like you remember Mr. Duran back in the day, right? Yeah, yeah, he's I remember when he played that song.
SPEAKER_00He's a great guy, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, no, it's got some great music. I remember there was one episode where like Jimmy Olson, I think he was like, Oh man, it's like because if I remember, like he divorced Chloe, because they got married in the A season, and then he they got attacked by Doomsday, which I always thought it was weird that they brought Doomsday like in a sort of a prequel show about Superman. Superman. Yeah. Which they never really killed him off. Apparently, what it's such a weird structure, guys, if you ever watch it, because like you get all these different types of kryptonite though in the movie. In the show, they call him like Meteor Rocks. One of them is like you can separate somebody's Kryptonian side from their human side, and it never made it yellow, wouldn't it? Yeah. No, it was a black kryptonite. The black, yeah, the red makes you bad. Yeah. And because like Doomsday in the show, guys, is like the incredible Hulk almost. Like, there's this guy, I forgot what his name is, but he's played by Sam Whitwear. I'm pretty sure the name might not sound familiar to y'all, but he played Darth Maul in like a lot of like Star Wars animated shows and stuff. I know they did, and they recently did a mall show like not too long ago. But like he would transition from being Doomsday. Doomsday and stuff like that. So okay, here it is. Davis Bloom. So he would transition from Davis to um Doomsday constantly. So they wanted to separate them. And doing so, what Clark does is after separating Doomsday and Davis, he sends Doomsday to the center of the earth where he said someday Doomsday might come back. So like the death of Superman might have happened after the events of Smallville, but who knows?
SPEAKER_00But they had a comic book run afterwards, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it did. But to my point, there was a scene where like Jimmy Olsen started starts like taking substances and stuff like that. And at the and at the end, they played a song called I Don't Care by I think they're called Apocalyptica, which is a cello rock group, and they had the singer from Three Days Grace. So it's like if you were dead or still alive, I don't care. And that l those lyrics hit differently. Because like at that point, he didn't want to remember that. He knows you should check it out. But like at that point, too. Yeah, Jimmy had nothing, didn't want anything to do with Chloe. Like he blamed Chloe for like going into coma and stuff like that. Which that it's not him talking, it's the substance talking, really.
SPEAKER_00I thought you were gonna say, I thought you were gonna say going into a cult, but okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, do we really need to go there?
SPEAKER_00He didn't get there, he didn't get there yet, but he would have he would have stayed, he would have seen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it's just funny because supposedly Kristen Kruig introduced Allison to that, but at the time Kristen heard it was of something heard it as something different. She left. Oh damn, I didn't know that. Yeah, she left when she heard that oh, this is a cult. Allison stayed.
SPEAKER_00She said, I'm saying dude. I it's so funny. I was uh talking to my buddy right now a little while ago, and we were sort of getting into a little bit of debate about some stuff, and it was funny because I was telling him that I was about to come on with you and talk about small bill. And I don't I think he saw it and his wife had never seen it, and she was like, Oh, I should watch it because me and her have like a lot of similar tastes. And a lot of what we were arguing about was very like Lex and Clark sort of like ideology. Like, and I was like, that's what I love so much is just seeing the sort of like the way Clark gets raised versus the way Lex gets raised, where his is all about power and all about like trying to advance, and Clark's is very much like doing the right thing, even if you stay lowly, even if you stay just being some farmer that doesn't go out there and do all these amazing things by the standards of society, but you're just doing what you can in your local community. I mean, obviously he's superman, so he's helping everybody, but just as Clark, you know, he just he could still make a difference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, where are you on time, just so we can know?
SPEAKER_00Oh, let me see. I got like 15 minutes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, we could talk for 15 minutes. We could just say Clark and Superman for 15 minutes. I'm just kidding, no. But to my point, the music was great. There's a lot. I remember they were playing Green Days, Boulevard of Broken Dreams in one episode. I don't remember which one, but they have so many good, so much good music.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like the Five for Fighting. Remember that one? Which one was that one? I'm not uh I can't stand to fly. I don't know when he's taking care of the little boy, the little boy that ends up dying.
SPEAKER_01Oh, dude, that was a kicker, man.
SPEAKER_00Oh, dude. One of my favorite freaking moments is when they're in the hospital and Lex comes to bring him because they're both fans of that like Warrior Angel.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Superhero in the show. And he tells him, like, how come Warrior Angel's best friend like betrayed him? You know, do you think that it's something that, you know, the choices, and then Lex tells him, like, it's not uh like becoming evil is not a light switch, it's like uh the road of like I forgot exactly what he tells him, but he pretty much tells him it's not like a it's not a flip of a switch, it's something that slowly happens over time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's always something that I've always talking about himself. But it's like I've seen that a lot throughout like just just regular life, to be honest with you. It's like people say, like, if you know you go back to like dictators or tyrants and stuff like that, and you were and you just think like, dude, why are they like this? But then you also think they don't just wake up one day just to be an asshole, it just happens.
SPEAKER_00So and just think the road the road to hell is paved with good intentions, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01I want to talk about me a favor, and then I want to talk about the one that like it's more of a why, you know, like why did you make this episode? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Actually, I'm gonna start with that one. You know what the worst episode I like the one I hated the most is when Lana becomes a vampire, she joins like a sorority. Yeah, I'm like I'm like the fact that this made it to the writing room, it blows my mind. And I know it's like the logical thing for me to do a skip.
SPEAKER_00That's what happened, but you can't. There might be something here I need to see for the next episode. But that's a part of having 10 seasons where you're like, we just gotta throw some shit out there and see what happens.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then my favorite one was Absolute Justice parts one and two, where they discovered the Justice Society of America, where it's like Dr. Faye and Hawkman and um Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Dr. Fate is sick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I do wish they like developed them a lot more because like in the character of Ice Coast just killing them off one by one. It's like I'm the Star Spangled Kid, Chloe. Now, hi. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know what my favorite episode is? Not my favorite episode, but I think one of the things that I always loved was like how they were able to, like with some of the other heroes that they brought in, they were able to capture like such little moments that were so cool. But do you remember the one where they go to the like the Halloween party? And obviously the green arrow is Robin Hood. Oh, yeah. And then in the end, he's with uh He's with Lois, right? Yeah, he's with Lois, and he pretty much she says, Hey, if you can hit that that can, I'll give you a kiss. And he misses, but then when they zoom in in the end, you see that he hits the freaking the little top of the can off. And I was like, This is such a perfect. Do you remember that?
SPEAKER_01That was yeah, I remember that episode. Yeah, it was like that little like part where like I know I have a bunch of cans in here somewhere, and you just yeah, it's like the little top part.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he just freaking shoots it right through, and I'm like, it's such a great little moment to just yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm looking at like what's like considered like the like favorite episodes. One is The Reckoning, which was the one we were talking about earlier with Jonathan's death. Um yeah, it's a great episode. Homecoming, which is a 200, so is when Is that where they put him on the field? No, well, that was the opening, that was the first uh movie, but it was uh or not the I know. No, that was the first movie. Yeah, I get movies and television confused something, but that was the first episode. I know that. But Homecoming was when like he goes to his high school reunion and Brainiac 5 is introducing him to like all the stuff. I like that one because we get introduced to I think the Bug Boy, that's what he was called, where like he got like Blue Beetle, not blue beetle, where like because remember how like the first set of Oh yes, yes, the guy with all the V's and shit, he's all the insects. Yeah, he comes and he tells Lois, hey, tell Clark I said thank you for setting me straight. And that was like one of those episodes where it's like the bad guy actually thinks Clark because he knew he was, you know. He could be saved, yeah. Because like if y'all ever watch the show, it's it kind of gets repetitive because they were trying to develop it does, yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's the only problem where it's like it's like a villain of the day, Clark saves him, and then sometimes he's like, Thank you for saving me.
SPEAKER_01And then it's like the next one where he like he sees the humanity in everybody's yeah, because for those that don't know how people get powers, it's through Kryptnite because it opens with a meteor shower, which is the day Clark showed up on Earth. And um, if you're around that meteor shower for like a specific amount of time on a specific like element, you start developing abilities, like there. One where like the football coach, like he was in a sauna, but he uses the meteor rocks to um to heat the the the athletes up, and then he yeah, he develops like that, you know, that's the heat powers or whatever. But it's not always the case. So if you're thinking like, is that how Flash gets his abilities? No, it just happens. Actually, they call him impulse in the show. I actually would like to meet Kyle Gonner, that's the actor, because he just seems like a very interesting guy, though.
SPEAKER_00The first guy to play him, yeah.
SPEAKER_01He comes out. I think he I know he comes out in like a lot of horror movies, like um he came out in like the smile movies and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then he came out in the other one too, right? Some I know it was after it was like named after uh state. It was like some sort of horror movie.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the haunting in Connecticut.
SPEAKER_00Yes, the haunting of Connecticut.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he comes out in that, right? Yeah, he came out in that one too. That's right, that's right.
SPEAKER_00Damn, I remember last year that I didn't even realize.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the one you were talking about earlier was the kid Ryan. That's also another fan favorite episode. It's a really good episode, though. Is it really like IGN or whatever? This is just a Reddit I'm reading off right now.
SPEAKER_00Fuck it. Reddit's so that's where the people speak.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so like some of them will say, like that one, of course, reckoning, run, where we first meet impulse, because that's kind of like where you know we're getting a Justice League episode, which we did technically.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we did, yeah. Yeah, remember they brought in some weird people say they brought in like booster goals for some reason. I was like, no one's gonna know who this like obscure character is.
SPEAKER_01It's funny because Booster Gold is from the future and he just comes back and he's an interesting character. Yeah, he is. I know James really wants to make a movie. Do a movie, yeah, or at least have the character be part of it. But yeah, where are you on time just so I can know what else to cover? I got like five minutes. Oh, okay. Well, I wish we could talk more. It just things happen, guys. But I will say if you ever watch it, uh, I think it's on Hulu. Check it out, guys. I like to see I keep telling people I want to see reaction videos. I watch a lot of reaction videos of people who I love reaction videos, bro. Yes, they need to do small though. Some of my favorite ones were just like Cinnapals and the Normies and Real Rejects is a bigger one.
SPEAKER_00I love real rejects, bro. I love Cinnapal, Cinebench. You seen Cinebench? I heard of that Cinebench yeah. I don't like the normies for some reason. Every time I watch them, I'm like, there's too many, right? There's like where there's like four or five of them because they talk too much, right? Once it gets more than like two reactors, I don't like it because they're all saying shit that it gets my fucking nerves, bro. Yeah, who's your favorite channel? Who's your favorite reaction channel?
SPEAKER_01I would say the media nights for now.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But Greg, if you're hearing this, Greg from The Real Reject.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Greg Alba.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which I didn't know him and Jobby are brothers.
SPEAKER_00If you didn't know it, I know that now, but dude, I didn't know that for a very long time. And I was like, I wonder how come they never just did a podcast together.
SPEAKER_01They did. There was Greg's first podcast, and he said he would want it to bring in Jobby.
SPEAKER_00But my bad, not not podcast. I know that they did the podcast together, but I wonder why they never did a reaction channel together.
SPEAKER_01I think because they just wanted to be separate. Uh okay. But yeah, Greg Jobby, hit me up. I want to talk to y'all because y'all see.
SPEAKER_00They're super cool, bro. I really like their channel.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm not a big fan of Koy, though, to be honest.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. He just seems like he's always throwing, like he's always trying to throw some subtle little politics in there that isn't there. You know what I mean? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I wish we could talk more. It just guys, uh, it was just like some timing on both our ends. But uh, my bad. It's all right. But anyway, if you ever want to check it out, check it out on Hulu. I believe that's where you is it on Hulu? I believe it's on Hulu. Let me double check real quick. I'm rewatching Smallville Baby. If I could, then I would. Yeah, Hulu. I'm gonna rewatch this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're gonna get some very interesting episodes, some questionable episodes, but and if you're there's a lot of shitty episodes, but there's so many like great, beautiful moments and lessons that you should watch. And we just don't get those anymore, I think.
SPEAKER_01Sometimes, yeah, because I remember, I'll end this off, but I remember when I saw Reckoning, it's different because you know my story involving my dad, and like especially because like at the end it was a song called I Grieve by fuck, I forgot his name, but he he replaced David David Snow or something? No, he replaced Phil Collins in Genesis, but I oh man, let me look at it. Yeah, but let me check. I agree Peter Gabriel, that's who he is.
SPEAKER_00Peter Gabriel, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but dude, it just hits different, but and I know like it might hit different because I know you've lost a lot of folks in your life as well that you were deeply close to. But before we end this off, uh guys, again, I'm sorry that it was this quick, but before we end this off, you are a fitness expert, so where can some of my followers find you at?
SPEAKER_00Oh, juggernaut underscore gym, juggernauts underscore gym at IG. And that's basically it. I really use IG. And and I guess TikTok's the same thing, Juggernauts underscore Jim.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was like you pause for that moment. It's like, do you forget so much?
SPEAKER_00Well, because I was like, I have a Facebook when really that's just like my own personal Facebook, and really everything I do is just on via Instagram. I think that's probably the main one. But yeah, same thing on TikTok and Instagram, Juggernauts underscore Jim.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, you know what? Despite this being quick and stuff, uh well, we still got a chance to talk about this. I've been dying to talk about Smallbow ever since I did a Superman episode. Ever since I did a Superman episode, I wish it was longer, but maybe one day when we have more time, we could get into it a lot more.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, dude, for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but at least no matter what, thank you for coming out, Steven. It's it was a joy having you around.
SPEAKER_00I appreciate it, man.
SPEAKER_01Anytime I'm asked, I'm I'm on here. All right, guys. Well, you guys have a great night, day, morning, whenever you're listening to this. And remember, damn, I forgot. Not all heroes were capes. They're farm boys in Kansas.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_01All right, later, brother. Later. Bye. Jesus.
