Episode 162: Homemaking: A Multi-faceted Diamond

Welcome back to the porch! I’m glad you’re here. I’m still a bit stuck in the yesterday aspect of living a simple life. With all of our discussions on prepping, living simply, and remembering where we came from, I’ve been taking a deeper look at how I live my own life.

And one of the areas I’ve been looking at more closely is my home, and what it means to be a homemaker. I will confess, I’m not the best one in the world. My home doesn’t stay spotless, and occasionally the laundry does pile up. But I also know that homemaking is more than just cleaning.

Homemaking is often seen as a singular role, but in reality, it’s a multi-faceted gem that shines in countless ways. It’s not just about keeping a house clean or preparing meals; it’s about creating a home that reflects love, warmth, and purpose. Each homemaker brings their unique touch, much like a craftsman cutting and polishing a diamond, ensuring every facet sparkles in its own way.

One of the most fundamental facets of homemaking is the home itself. Keeping a home clean and organized is a skill that takes time and effort, but it also requires balance. Today’s homemakers recognize that maintaining a home doesn’t mean spending every waking moment cleaning. Instead, they implement smart systems—cleaning schedules, organization methods, and minimalism—to reduce clutter and make upkeep more manageable. They also delegate chores to family members, understanding that a well-run home is a team effort.

Meal planning is another critical component of homemaking. The age-old question of “What’s for dinner?” can cause unnecessary stress, but with a bit of forethought, it can be avoided. A meal plan not only ensures healthy, home-cooked meals but also saves money and reduces food waste. Today’s homemakers spend time prepping for meals ahead of time, batch cooking – so some meals can be put in the freezer for those super busy days, and creative menu planning to make mealtime smoother and more enjoyable.

Cooking and baking are often viewed as two sides of the same coin, but they each hold a distinct place in homemaking. Cooking provides daily sustenance, while baking brings a special kind of comfort, filling a home with warmth and delicious aromas. Whether it’s a simple family dinner or a batch of homemade bread, food has the power to bring people together and nourish both body and soul.

Finances are a major aspect of homemaking that often warrants a groan or two. Managing a household budget requires diligence and foresight. Homemakers track expenses, plan for future needs, and know the difference between wants and needs. Frugal living, meal budgeting, and DIY home projects help stretch every dollar, giving the homemaker yet another level of financial stability and security.

Gardening is another extension of homemaking, reaching beyond the walls of the house into the backyard. A garden provides fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits, promoting self-sufficiency and healthier meals. Some homemakers even raise small livestock, producing their own eggs, milk, or meat. Gardening also offers therapeutic benefits, connecting homemakers to nature and the simple joys of watching something grow.

Preserving food is a timeless homemaking skill that’s made a comeback in a big way. Canning, dehydrating, and freezing ensure that nothing goes to waste and that homegrown food can be enjoyed all year long. Preserving food not only saves money but also provides peace of mind, knowing that a stocked pantry can sustain a family through changing seasons and uncertain times.

Home maintenance and repairs are practical skills that every homemaker benefits from. Whether it’s changing a lightbulb, fixing a leaky faucet, or sewing a missing button, these small but important tasks keep a household running smoothly. Many homemakers take it a step further, learning basic carpentry, plumbing, or electrical skills to tackle larger home projects without always relying on outside help.

Handmade and handcrafted skills add a layer of creativity to homemaking. Whether it’s sewing, knitting, woodworking, or crafting, these skills bring a sense of accomplishment and personalization to a home. Handmade items often carry sentimental value, becoming cherished family heirlooms or thoughtful gifts for loved ones.

Beyond these traditional facets, homemaking also encompasses emotional and spiritual well-being. Creating a home isn’t just about its physical aspects - it’s about fostering an environment of love, peace, and faith. Homemakers are the caretakers of family traditions, keepers of memories, and builders of a space where everyone feels safe and valued. They support their families through life’s ups and downs, offering comfort, encouragement, and wisdom.

Hospitality is another vital yet sometimes forgotten aspect of homemaking. Opening one’s home to guests, whether for a simple cup of tea or a large gathering, brings communities together and strengthens relationships. A hospitable homemaker ensures that visitors feel welcome and at ease, creating a space where warmth and kindness prevail.

This is one of the aspects of homemaking that has really caught my attention lately. Legacy-building. It’s an often unspoken but essential part of homemaking. The way a homemaker nurtures a home today impacts future generations. Family traditions, recipes, and values are passed down, creating a lasting influence that shapes the lives of children and grandchildren. Every act of love and effort put into a home today leaves an imprint on the future.

Technology also plays a role in modern homemaking, offering tools that make tasks more efficient. From smart home devices that help manage energy use to digital meal-planning apps, technology can support a homemaker’s efforts rather than replace them. The key is finding a balance between tradition and innovation, using technology to enhance rather than overshadow the heart of homemaking.

Community involvement is another often-overlooked aspect of homemaking. A homemaker’s influence extends beyond the front door - it reaches neighbors, schools, and local organizations. Whether it’s hosting a gathering, volunteering, or simply offering a helping hand, homemakers strengthen the bonds of their community and create a ripple effect of kindness.

Today’s homemaking is an evolving art, blending time-honored traditions with new innovations. Each homemaker brings their own strengths, passions, and perspectives, making every home uniquely beautiful. Whether through cooking, gardening, budgeting, or simply offering a listening ear, homemakers play a vital role in shaping their homes and communities.

The many facets of homemaking shine brightest when approached with joy and intention. It’s not about perfection; it’s about creating a space where love and life flourish. Just like a diamond, every homemaker’s skill and effort reflect light in their own brilliant way, making homemaking a truly precious and rewarding calling.

This month, as we explore a few of the many facets of homemaking, I encourage you to reflect on what homemaking means to you. What aspects bring you the most joy? Where do you see opportunities to simplify? How can you use homemaking as a way to slow down and reconnect with what matters most?

Whether you’re a seasoned homemaker or just beginning this journey, know that what you do is valuable. You are shaping a home, a family, and a life that reflects your values and priorities. And that is a beautiful thing.

So, let’s look at our homes together. Let’s celebrate the art of homemaking, embrace its many facets, and use it as a tool to cultivate a simpler, more meaningful life.
