Dr. Michael Koren, Kevin Geddings Episode 348

Send us a text

Cardiologist Dr. Koren joins Kevin Geddings to talk about the importance of understanding what we know about patients. The cardiologist recounts a recently recorded podcast where he - with full consent - reviewed the cardiovascular infomation of a patient to give a broader understanding of what all of the numbers mean and how they can give doctors and patients insight into what's going on. Dr. Koren then makes an offer to do this for other patients to help illuminate other medical areas with experts in those fields - right here on MedEvidence!

Med Evidence! is where we help you navigate the real truth behind medical research from both a clinical and research perspective. So sit back, relax, and get ready to learn about the truth behind the data medicine and healthcare. This is MedEvidence!

Kevin Geddings:

Joining us live on the Monday morning, Dr. Michael Koren, medical doctor, cardiologist, research scientist, and a big friend of WSOS. We appreciate him and our relationship with him very, very much. You can learn more by going to EncoreDocs.com. They have offices right here in St. John's County at UF Flagler Hospital or next door to UF Flagler Hospital. We're going to talk to you about medevidence.com in just a moment. But Dr. Koren mentioned that we might have a special offer for WSOS listeners. That'll get their attention, Dr. Koren. What what do you have in mind?

Dr. Michael Koren:

Absolutely. So, Kevin, I'm going to make you and your listeners an offer you just cannot refuse.

Kevin Geddings:

Not Corleone, but uh Koreona.

Dr. Michael Koren:

Going back to my days growing up on Staten Island.

Kevin Geddings:

Yeah, an offer we can't refuse.

Dr. Michael Koren:

So so um we've done podcasts with patients before on MedEvidence! And recently I did one where I broke down the cholesterol and lipid results for a patient. And what we did is we looked at all the details of their cholesterol profile and really explained to the person what everything meant in a more detailed way than you would get in an exam room. And then we actually plotted a course for that patient showing um you know the patient's input into all this and also the expert opinion on how the what the course would look like. And uh what I'm willing to do as a special offer for WSOS listeners is to give you an opportunity to be part of such a podcast. Now it's not just me, we have multiple experts. We have uh great experts in dermatology, in diabetes, in weight loss, in orthopedics, uh, in neurology, just down the line, a lot of things we can do. But, you know, for example, if you have a difficult time with migraine headaches and you want an expert to look at your records and then project that to other people that of view MedEvidence, we're willing to do that. And this of course will be done free of charge, uh, but we do expect the patients to agree to release the information and and allow people to share their experience. It could be in dermatology. Uh, we have uh Dr. Mike Bernhardt who is an amazing uh clinical dermatologist and a great researcher, and he's working on projects in acne and hidradenitis suppurativa, which is uh acne on steroids, if you will. And uh, you know, on and on and on, literally in many, many different areas we have experts. Maybe not in every area, but in most areas we can probably do that. And again, uh if you call and show your interest, we're not gonna guarantee we're gonna get you on because there's a number of issues that go into making the decision. But if you have a case that's illustrative of how doctors think and ultimately how we get to solutions, we would love to get you on. And uh we'll put WSOS listeners on the top of the queue.

Kevin Geddings:

Wow, front of the line, right? VIP status.

Dr. Michael Koren:

There you go.

Kevin Geddings:

Yeah. So this could be folks driving around listening to us right now who have a whole host of different issues, right? Or is it just tied to they have some concern about cholesterol?

Dr. Michael Koren:

No, no, uh, it's definitely not limited to cholesterol. In fact, we just we just did a podcast on that, so we'd probably want to do something else. But whatever your health problem is, uh we'll look at it. And um, if it's if it's a case that we like, sort of like the people's court, uh, you submit your case. Doesn't mean that we're gonna do every case, but if it's a case that has some interest, we'll provide very, very high level medical expertise at no charge. And all you uh consent to is to be viewed, just like the people's court.

Kevin Geddings:

Very cool. No, and then of course, the results of that are good information that not only you will benefit from as the as the patient, the participant, but also a lot of other folks who are out there who, you know, may not be doing much to find out more about their particular health condition, right? They're gonna get some education.

Dr. Michael Koren:

Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. And this gets into really a key issue, which is you know, in medicine, there are things that we know very well. In medicine, there's things that we know that we don't know. And um, there's a process to learn about the things that you don't know. And there's there's two levels to that process, by the way, Kevin. One is to do tests. When you go to a doctor's office, they'll order tests to figure out the stuff they don't know about you. But there's also the clinical trial world where we find out what we don't know about you and others just like you.

Kevin Geddings:

Yeah.

Dr. Michael Koren:

So uh it's a great way for people to understand one, what we know for your immediate benefit, and two, how you can help be part of the solution for others.

Kevin Geddings:

Yeah. Give us just a quick rundown of some, you know, some health issues, uh whether they're chronic conditions or otherwise, that people are dealing with that you think would be a really good fit. I mean, I know it's a pretty wide list, but people are driving around, sure, you know, kind of give them a sense of if you're dealing with blank, give us a call.

Dr. Michael Koren:

Yeah, so I mentioned the skin conditions. So that's that's a great example. A lot of people, particularly young people, may have bad skin conditions and they're they're nervous about going out in public, and they may have gotten a little bit of help, but maybe not extensive help. And and it it's rare that a doctor who's an expert at this would break it down for you. So mention this condition called hidradenitis suppurativa, which is a really bad form of acne, if you will. And there are now solutions that are being proposed for this that were not previously available. So, you know, again, a skin condition where you get an expert dermatologist look at you and describe what he or she is seeing, and then break it down for you about what next steps look like would be an example. Um, another example would be the migraine headache space. Another example would be memory. There's all always concerns about, oh, you know, I'm in my fifties, I have a family history of Alzheimer's, and I'm not remembering things quite as well as I used to. Should I be worried about that? So that's a a common problem, and there's a lot of information, of course, on the web about that, but I don't know if you're gonna find an expert in that condition actually interviewing a patient and determining whether or not it's not really anything to be worried about, it's pretty topic or those types of issues, or huh, maybe we need to take this next step, maybe we need to get a scan of your brain or some lab tests. Uh so you know, these are just some examples, but uh it's true for diabetes, it's true for weight loss, it's true for orthopedic issues, and a lot of literally we touch a lot of different areas.

Kevin Geddings:

Wow. Yeah, but a cool opportunity. So, yes, if you're someone out there, yeah, perhaps you're dealing with some sort of a chronic health condition that you've been struggling with, you don't have any satisfactory answers. We would encourage you to you know take Dr. Koren up on his offer. You can start the process by calling this number for ENCORE Research Group here in St. Augustine and work with them. I have done that. Karen on our team has as well. We highly recommend working with them. It's gonna be a positive, great, fun experience for you. 904-730-0166 is the local number. 904-730-0166. And of course, the website, encoredocs.com, that's spelled E-N-C-O-R-E, Encore Docs.com. It's gonna be a lot of fun. We'll see how people react to it. Uh, doc, before we let you go, talk to us about Medevidence.com

Dr. Michael Koren:

as we uh mentioned, MedEvidence is our platform where we get to the truth behind the data. And uh it it's interesting. Um I was watching uh Peter Atia being interviewed on I guess it was 60 minutes last night. I didn't get into all the details, but um very charismatic guy, a very influential guy, and uh a guy that will not necessarily give you all of the data from clinical trials. So it's more taking little bits and pieces of basic science and trying to make a story out of that. So and that's not bad, I'm not criticizing that, but there are different levels of evidence that drive doctor recommendations, and uh it it it brings up very, very interesting issues about what you believe. Uh and you know we don't charge for anything, we're not promoting any uh fancy weight loss program, or we're not claiming you're gonna live ten years longer if you try this the other supplement, but we just want you to become knowledgeable. So that's uh the difference between us and maybe other people out there that are promoting certain products or books or your specific specific remedies that they have a financial interest in.

Kevin Geddings:

Yeah, no, absolutely. Well, once again, uh just a much better resource than Googling or relying on some influencer on Instagram or TikTok or Snapchat. Highly recommend looking up and uh learning more about medevidence.com. It's not going to cost you anything. It's a bunch of great information, reliable information. It's free of charge. Medevidence.com, the truth behind the data. That's medevidence.com. Dr. Michael Koren, thank you as always for all your time. We appreciate you. Be safe out there, okay?

Dr. Michael Koren:

You too. My pleasure. Bye-bye.
