Executive Editor Dr. Koren joins Kevin Geddings live from the MedEvidence! offices. We get insight into how the MedEvidence team sifts through clinical-research-related news. During this call we also learn a little about novel science from across the medical specturm, including evidence that losing too much weight too quicklly may increase inflammation, and news of an AI tool in England used for early detection of heart failure.

Be a part of advancing science by participating in clinical research.

A Live Look Inside The Office

Kevin Geddings

Joining me live on the studio line right now, Dr. Michael Koren, medical doctor, cardiologist, and research scientist, and also the founder of MedEvidence, which we talk a lot about here at WSOS. I want you to check out the website medevidence.com. That's medevidence.com, the truth behind all the healthcare data that's swirling around the internet universe, right, Dr. Koren?

Orlando Clinical Research Training Invite

Rapid Weight Loss And Inflammation Risk

Dr. Michael Koren

It is, it is. You actually have me today when I'm in the Med Evidence office. Often we talk early on Monday mornings when I'm driving into the office. But today at lunchtime, I'm actually here in the MedEvidence office in the heat of battle. So we will literally be getting information from different sources and figuring out what to project to our patient population and how to prepare some of our educational events. So right before I got online, I was working with Sharon Smith, who runs our MedEvidence office here, about training of doctors in Orlando for clinical research. So not only do we conduct trials, but we actually train other physicians on how to do their jobs. And we have our big annual training session in Orlando this weekend. So if there are any people in the clinical research industry that wants to be part of it, it's actually in Orlando on April 24th and 27th, to be precise. And it's a CME program where uh medical professionals can get information and get credit for that information. And it's a it's a wonderful meeting. It's a neat meeting and it's what we're doing as we speak. So I know that's probably not something that most of your listeners would necessarily do, but you may find one or two out there that'd be interested in the type of thing that we do here. So it's kind of a typical situation for us.

Chase

Dr. Koren, we just got word that the Journal of Clinical Investigation did a study that now losing too much body fat can harm your health.

Dr. Michael Koren

Hey Chase, come on. I uh you can say hello. This is Chase. She's one of our great people here at MedEvidence that actually is in charge of some of our social media uh outreach. So just say hello to everybody.

Chase

Hi guys.

Dr. Michael Koren

So this so hold on, Chase, come on. I let's just go over this. So this is hot off the press.

Chase

Hot off the press, even though we don't say that anymore.

Dr. Michael Koren

Oh, we we don't say hot off the press anymore. What do we say?

Chase

Uh just in.

Dr. Michael Koren

Just in. Okay, got it. All right. Well, I'm old school, So this is interesting. So, Kevin, this is kind of a typical thing that we look at. So this came out saying that if you lose too much body weight too fast, you can actually develop inflammation in your bloodstream, which you know is a really bad thing.

Kevin Geddings

Hmm

Dr. Michael Koren

So this is the type of thing that we sort of address in clinical trials. We do these clinical trials where we're not only looking to see how much weight people lose, but whether or not they develop inflammation or if that inflammation gets better during the course of time. So, for example, if somebody's interested in a weight loss study, give us a call because not only will we perhaps get them into a study where they'll get a GLP-1 for free, but we'll also monitor them in ways that they won't get monitored in standard practice. So I think that's kind of interesting. Thanks, Chase. This is really cool stuff. Thank you. Let's just definitely get this out on the website.

Chase

Sounds good.

Dr. Michael Koren

All right.

Kevin Geddings

No, and the website is MedEvidence.com. If you're just tuning in and wondering what we're talking about, uh it's a great resource, you know, because there's so much bad health information swirling around the internet, especially on Instagram and Google and places like that, or you're talking to artificial intelligence. This is a website, obviously, where they back up everything that they put out there with facts. And so that's the most important thing, right? Everything on MedEvidence.com is something we can trust, right, Dr. Koren?

Dr. Michael Koren

Absolutely. Yes. So we do this vetting process as uh you kind of just saw, where stories come in, and the stories that we think are most relevant and most trustworthy are the stuff that we will push out to the patient population. It's also something we use so that when we're running our clinical trials, we make sure that we're running the best clinical trials and that we keep our patients informed. You know, one of the key ethical principles of running clinical research is constantly keeping the patients informed so they're truly consented on the risks and benefits of what we're doing. So it's kind of a neat part of what we do, and MedEvidence is our platform to get that information out to the general public. So you know you kind of see what I do day to day. I actually uh..

Benton

Dr. Koren, got a new one hot off the press here.

Dr. Michael Koren

Uh so he's using my old school uh stuff. Just in, right?

Benton

Just in.

AI Tool Aims To Predict Heart Failure

Dr. Michael Koren

All right, all right.

Benton

So this is actually.

Dr. Michael Koren

Hold on, just introduce yourself. This is Benton.

Benton

Oh hey Kevin, this is Benton. I talk to you every once in a while by email.

Dr. Michael Koren

He's actually great he's a great medical writer. So Benton has a lot of his articles on the Med Evidence website. And I learn from Benton every day. Thank you for the good work on your writing. But what's what's going on here?

Benton

So this is fresh out of England. It's a uh AI tool used to predict heart failure. And this is actually done at Oxford, so not really relevant, but we should probably keep an eye on it.

Dr. Michael Koren

Okay.

Benton

In case it starts coming over here, it was published in the American Journal of Cardiology.

Dr. Michael Koren

Okay. That's a good journal I published a lot there. Yeah, yeah. Is this the the study that we did with the app in St. Augustine?

Benton

No, it's not. This is uh this is all post-hoc. So the app we did was looking at people's speech patterns and how they change over time. And this is just looking at CT scan.

Dr. Michael Koren

Okay. That's interesting. So the study we did was actually an interventional study using AI, but it was a randomized study, and this is sort of a retrospective study.

Benton

Yeah.

Dr. Michael Koren

So the stuff that we did in St. Augustine is actually more state of the art than this.

Benton

I would think so.

Dr. Michael Koren

Yeah, that's that's really cool. Well, thanks for sharing that. But that's and it's in it's it predicts heart failure, right?

Benton

Yeah.

Dr. Michael Koren

Okay, which is obviously a huge problem. And it's an area that we're very actively involved now. So if somebody has told you who's listening that you've been diagnosed with heart failure, may want to come down to our St. Augustine site or other sites in our network and learn more about it and see if there's any cutting edge research that could be beneficial. Well, thank you for that. That's great. All right.

Kevin Geddings

Yeah, that's cool insight. You're right, because Dr. Koren, we've talked for many, many months about MedEvidence and how it's a great resource for people wanting accurate healthcare information from the internet. But uh now we got a little insight as to how it all comes together every day. It's pretty cool. Yeah, well, thank you. Thank you for that.
