In this warm and lively episode of "Dog Friendly," host Brandon Bennett sits down at Grossenbart Brewery in Longmont, CO, with Bre Brutton, a QA specialist in biotech who balances her scientific career with her passions for reading, making art, and, most importantly, spending quality time with her pets. Bre shares her heartfelt journey of adopting two incredible rescue dogs from New Mexico — Kalloa, affectionately called Lou, who’s 16 years old and looks like a Collie but is actually a Belgian Malinois and mutt, and Meco, a 4 or 5-year-old rescue with a big heart.
Bre talks about her support for a rescue organization in New Mexico and her experience fostering to adopt, emphasizing the rewarding, and sometimes challenging, process of giving shelter animals a second chance. Her stories highlight her deep love for her dogs and her active lifestyle — from outdoor adventures to visits to local breweries. She also shares fun memories of her friends dancing at Grossenbart Brewery, tying together community, friendship, and a shared love for pups.
This episode offers a heartfelt glimpse into Bre’s life, showcasing her support for rescue work and her love for her furry friends. Whether you're a dog lover, a rescue advocate, or just enjoy stories of meaningful connections, you’ll find inspiration in Bre’s stories of resilience, community, and companionship. Tune in for a delightful conversation that celebrates the joy of true pet-parenting and the fun of outdoor brewery hopping!

So whether you're a seasoned pup parent or just a dog lover, grab your leash, maybe a libation, and join us as we enjoy the world of dogs and incredible adventures that await. Let's dive into today's episode. Hello, everybody, and good morning. Morning it is. We're back with another episode of Dog Friendly. We're on season 3, episode 20. Wow, we got all the way to 20. Today's episode, a little bit of a short one, but next week we got a couple, a three part series. We got some great interviews that we're conducting and have conducted. I'm very excited about those, but not to take away from my discussion with Bree Brutton. She's got two rescues. Lovely time with her at Rosenbart Brewery. We just got to share a little talk and, you know, it was one I've had in the files. Wanted to bring it up. Thank Bree for sitting down and talking a little bit. Just a short little sweet for your Friday morning. Hope everybody loves it. Everyone has a good day and here we go. You're going to start hearing things in the headphones, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes, sir. You can hear everything? I can hear things.
SPEAKER_02Bree, I'm Brandon.
SPEAKER_01Oh, my God. That's my brother's name. Come on. Oh, my God. That's so cute. I love it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Bree, I'm going to ask you the simple, easy things real quick. Just state your name and what you do.
SPEAKER_01My name is Bree. Full name. Oh, my full name. My name is Bree Broughton. I'm a QA associate for a biotech company. And outside of that, I just like hanging out with my pets. And yeah, I chill. I like to read, make some art, and that's about it.
SPEAKER_02Awesome. So you have dogs
SPEAKER_01or a dog? I have two dogs. Two dogs. I got two. All right. I have two dogs and a cat, actually, which is amazing.
UNKNOWNOkay.
SPEAKER_02Cat, I'm not interested, but that's it. I'm not against cats, but no. I grew up with cats from the nowhere of Wisconsin, and
SPEAKER_00so... Sounds like he hates
SPEAKER_02cats. I don't. They're outside cats. They were just wonderful and lovely. So your dogs, what's their names?
SPEAKER_01So I have two dogs. One is Kalua. I've had her since 2008 or 9, so... She is my, she is my, like, I've had her since college. Kalua. Kalua. Wow. Lou, Louie Lou, for short. Lou, okay. Lou, yeah, she's a sweetheart, and she's an old lady. I think she's 15 or 16 now. But, yeah, so I have Kalua and Miko, and Miko's a... probably four or five now, but he was a rescue from New Mexico.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And they had to give him hip surgery. He was abused, super shy. He's a
SPEAKER_02shy boy. So there's a lot of questions that go on to why he got dogs and things like that, but what kind of breeds are they? First one
SPEAKER_01blew up. Honestly, both of them are mutts. There's no specific breed. Both of them are black and brown, so they look like shepherd collie mateses.
SPEAKER_02It's just grooving with the music. We're at Gross and Bart Brewery. That's what we do. This is our home place,
SPEAKER_00and we're just talking dogs. I love the music, and we're talking dogs. Talking dogs. Yeah. But, yeah, no.
SPEAKER_02Just mutts. What are they predominantly? Do you know? I mean,
SPEAKER_01what's their looks like? Yeah, like, so Miko looks like a Belgian Malinois and, like, maybe a shepherd. He's, like, 40. Well, he's about 40 pounds. He's, like, black-brown. But he just looks like a mini German shepherd, so it's always been super
SPEAKER_03weird. That's
SPEAKER_01awesome. And then Kalimba. as a German Shepherd, but she looks like a collie, so it's super weird.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Well, that's awesome. And when did you get
SPEAKER_01them? So like I said, I got Kalua back in 2009, so now she's like 15 or 16, but I got her as a rescue. Miko I got in 2019, and he was also a rescue, and it was through like, I think it's like the Good Friends project or something. I'll have to send you the name. That's fine. They're like super No, that's awesome. Amazing rescue that operates out in New Mexico. Like, New Mexico puts a lot of dogs down. Okay. A lot of dogs down. Yeah, yeah. It's not no-kill, you know. Sure. So it is what it is. But I saw him, and he was on red alert. And I was like, that is the dog that I want. Yeah. I love him, and he deserves, like, a good home, you know. Yeah, yeah. So I saw him, and they helped, like, you know. You do, like, I did the foster to adopt thing. And so fostered him, adopted him. And, yeah, now he's such a good boy now.
SPEAKER_02and and what's what's like the favorite thing you do with your dogs
SPEAKER_01oh man anything outdoors like i just love being outside with them you know
SPEAKER_02well we've named one well like
SPEAKER_01what's what is this right here like do you bring them to the breweries oh absolutely like
SPEAKER_02i haven't seen him here yet so
SPEAKER_00i would have brought him today
SPEAKER_02but
SPEAKER_00i was
SPEAKER_02like i was in denver and i was super busy we got we got friends uh family here uh dancing around just supporting her from the podcast with mustaches on
SPEAKER_00these are
SPEAKER_02That's, that's awesome. That's great. This is a great community. This is what we do. And we just here at the Alpine, all we do is talk dirty as well. Um, and we talk dogs. Well, that's what you, I mean, you're no, it's no, it's all good. It's funny.
SPEAKER_01Um, but yeah, I know. Uh, I don't know if anybody's been to Westminster Hills dog park, but best dog park. I've been to Westminster Hills dog park.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Where's that at?
SPEAKER_01So it's in Westminster, Colorado. Yep, I live there. So I think that, I can't, I don't remember the main road, but it's not far from Four Noses Brewery. Yep, I know exactly where it is.
SPEAKER_02287 and something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I hit that place up on Saturdays, but it's off-leash, and it's just like hills for days with mountain views. So Westminster Hills Dog Park. It's by Stanley Lake, so...
SPEAKER_02Have you ever gone to Coot Lake here in Longmont?
UNKNOWNNo.
SPEAKER_02It's off-leash, and it's got... water for them to go in.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02And it's, it's just down the road from here. It's, it's probably about, you know, door to door, 14 minutes. Nice. Do you live here in Longmont?
SPEAKER_01No, I actually live like closer to like Boulder, Superior area. Okay. So, yeah, but I'm, I work over here, so. Okay. I'm over here all the time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's great. Um, oh, and then we got a couple more questions for you real quick. What's, uh, what, what's one of their like, uh, favorite tricks that, that you've taught them that
SPEAKER_01they do? So, Mika That's awesome. So they're
SPEAKER_02friendly dogs. Oh, so, okay, I can't wait to meet them here. Oh, yeah, we'll be back. I come here regularly. I love the brewery here. I know the owner and, you know, lots of other things that go on here. The last question that I have for you about both your dogs, and this is going to be a two-part question because you have two dogs. What... what, if they could say five things, five phrases, you gotta do with each one, you gotta name them before you say it, what would they say?
SPEAKER_01So, Miko's, like, such a silly boy, and he's, like, so oblivious to everything, but he's so sweet, so, like, one thing he would probably say is just, like, Miko smash, kind of like the Hulk.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, I like
SPEAKER_01it, I like it. Not in a bad way. No, that's okay. He, like, stomps around the yard, and Kalua, she's, like, the old wise one, so she'd probably say something along the lines of something Yoda would say, like, do or do not, do not,
SPEAKER_02Okay, no, no, we need five things each one of them would say. Five? Five. I thought ten. Ten phrases would have been awesome. So when you look at your dog, right, dogs, and I see them and I'm like, hey, my dog's Hazel. She's a little blue heeler. I was like,
SPEAKER_03I love you, Dad.
SPEAKER_02I was going to say, like, number one would be, like, I love you. Take me out. Things like that. Like, that's what we want. What would they say? Like, and you got to go with each one
SPEAKER_01of them. Number one.
SPEAKER_03Right? No, it's good. It's good, good, good. It's fun.
SPEAKER_01I love you. I love you so much, you know? Yeah. I love you. With five things. There's five. Their personalities are different, but, like, and it's mostly, like, talking shit about it. Sorry.
SPEAKER_02No, it's okay. No, no, no. Again, we're
SPEAKER_01dirty here and stuff like that. Yeah. Like, I get home from work and, like, oh, my brother was so mean to me today. Yes. You know, like, they have that banter. Like I said, we have a cat, and all three of them just, like, cuddle together. So, probably, they... You wouldn't believe what Mo did today. I like Mo. Yeah. They probably have something to say about the cat. They love me. They talk about each other. Kalua's the old wise one, like I said. And she would probably talk like some Yoda wisdom. Yeah, they're
SPEAKER_03talking shit, though. Yeah. That's a big
SPEAKER_01thing. Always. Where were you today? Where'd you go? Who'd you see? What's going on? You're already gone.
SPEAKER_02That's like eight things. Eight things each of them would say. Who
SPEAKER_01you been
SPEAKER_02petting? What dog were you hanging out with?
SPEAKER_01100%.
SPEAKER_02Do they get jealous?
SPEAKER_01They do. They're so pretty. They're both pretty dogs.
SPEAKER_02All right. Well, I'm going to get your information. I want you to send some photos so we can post them on the Instagram. Okay. Seriously. Like we, so Alpine Howell is a clothing company, but we're doing a podcast. Take some stickers. Um, we're, it's all handmade and we're, we're, we're in this for our love as humans for our pets and, and dogs specifically in this case. Uh, have nothing against cats I grew up with them I mean seriously yeah yeah yeah I didn't have I didn't have indoor cats I didn't have indoor cats I had outdoor cats but anyway but thanks for sitting down talking this short chat you
SPEAKER_01know I'm gonna be any anybody that focuses on animals has like you're after my own heart so
SPEAKER_02yeah and that's all that's my jam like I got a little blue healer but I'm here every Thursday if you want to come back bring some friends and we can talk more I buy a beer if you sit down and talk and it's super fun
SPEAKER_01yeah I'll bring my dogs next time
SPEAKER_02please do because I'd love to meet them and take some treats too. We have Bixby. It's a local company here in Colorado. Some of our friends work for them. Yeah, I feel
SPEAKER_01that. Thank
SPEAKER_02you for talking to me. Thank you so much. This is great.
SPEAKER_01Have
SPEAKER_02a good night. You too. Thanks again for sitting down with me, Bree, and Gross and Bart Brewery for hosting us. It's always good to talk with people about dogs and short or long it doesn't matter we're just here to talk about dogs next week's episodes i say episodes in the following weeks we're gonna have a probably a three-part series we sat down with mo mutts her name is mo and uh she's from alaska and runs this great uh dog company she actually converted a bus to uh Put her dogs on it. Safely straps them in. Goes around Saskatchewan, Alaska. She trains dogs and also walks dogs. It's great. I won't give anything else away. She's got tons of followers on social media. Great name. Got some great interviews coming up. A lot of good excitement here. We're winding her down on Season 3. We'll be hitting into Season 4 with, again, a lot of great, great conversations. But to the reviews, I wanted to bring it back around. I missed a couple weeks because I was working on this. Trixie Strategy Game Turnaround. This is the little... canisters that hold food, where the dogs push them with their paw or their nose to flip them around and let the treats fall out. Now, I gave about a month, it's been longer, to try and see if my dogs would, if I could train them to do it. Blue Heeler, wonderful. I think she barks at it a little bit, but if I bring it around every couple days, she seems to remember, but if it's every day, she definitely gets it and she's into it. uh the pit bull he is still struggling a little bit he barks at it i've been trying i think i paid attention more to the blue healer because i i'll admit that the success story was probably going to be better but she's also got a little bit more you know brain power in that level but i'm going to bring i'm going to keep working on it with the dogs and again great product you know The only thing is that I think it's a little small. The dimensions are 8.7, 7.1 by 13. It's... If it was a little bit bigger, like a wider stance, I think it wouldn't be so claustrophobic for the dog to just tunnel vision in on. That's just my opinion. Again, the Heeler does it. Very cool. I think it's a great product for a dog that can focus in on it. I'm sure there's a lot of smart dogs out there, Border Collies, other dogs that could figure it out, but Again, I just think maybe a little bit wider stance would have made it better. Giving it a 4 out of 5. And I'm going to keep coming back and reviewing for it. It's great. It's still working great. I don't know if it would fit in the dishwasher or not, but I just hand washed everything. So thank you. I just wanted to bring that back around because I know I've been slacking on that. Another... toy i'm going to start on and this one i'm just going to work specifically with the blue healer i just don't think my pity has it in them to figure this out uh but it's called talking pet starter set it's a bunch of buttons uh to play uh or recordable buttons uh and it has a guide uh by christina hunger and it's to get our dogs to communicate uh i'm not sure the whole level of it but i'm going to start doing that this weekend and i'll give weekly updates on what's going on with it and progression of the the product meaning opening it up and going through how the starter set works i'm going to post the link to their website on uh in the show notes so people can look at it and understand what i'm going through and then each week i'll i'll repost it and maybe even uh maybe even i will put a picture of the dog and what it's doing uh and and uh just keep keep it going because i'm just trying different things and i appreciate uh everyone bearing with me with my time frames and thank you for listening and always remember to pet them dogs have a good weekend until next week Today's episode was written and produced by me, Brandon Bennett, the owner of Alpine Howl.
