Nicole Wethington discusses New Year's resolutions (goals) and how to accomplish them in smaller steps and how to be successful!

Brooke and Kitty provide the calendar of events extending into the new year.

Kitty Glomski:

Good morning. This is Kitty Glomski along with

Brooke:

my cohost Brooke Mainville

Kitty Glomski:

from Region 9 Area Agency and Aging and another episode of Let's Talk About Aging.

Brooke Mainville:

Happy holidays everyone. I am Brooke Mainville with Region 9 Area Agency on Aging, and I have Nicole Wethington with us again. Hi Nicole.

Nicole Wethington:

I'm glad to be back.

Brooke Mainville:

Are you gearing up for the holidays?

Nicole Wethington:

I'm looking forward to some good family time and some down time.

Brooke Mainville:

That sounds really good right now. Nicole, I know you have worked with action plans in the past, and some of our workshops that we work with do action plans. I think they're similar to New New Year's resolution. Do you have a New Year's resolution in mind this year?

Nicole Wethington:

I do. I'm going to be working on meal planning every week. I want to make sure that I'm getting all of that good nutrition in, and so that's my resolution for the year.

Brooke Mainville:

Awesome. Do you mind telling what a New Year's resolution is?

Nicole Wethington:

A New Year's resolution is really a goal. It's something that we want to do, making a healthier change or a good change in our lives so that way we can have a great result.

Brooke Mainville:

It's a time for us to set back from our life and say, what's going well? What needs maybe a little bit of improvement so yours, you said is nutrition. Do you know for two out of five people actually make a resolution? So we're the two out of the five and Nicole, do you happen to know what the top 10 resolutions tend to be?

Nicole Wethington:

I do know some of our top 10 resolutions would include nutrition; so eating healthier, exercising more and probably spending more time with family and friends.

Brooke Mainville:

I think that is a good list. Some people even take up a new hobby or traveling, you know, just spice up their life a little bit. It's a good time to look in the mirror and reflect on what would I like to work on? You said yours was nutrition, right, Nicole? Yes. So that's a really big task. How are you going to break it down? So it's more doable?

Nicole Wethington:

I want to be successful at this, so I'm going to use our action plan format. We use this in our evidence-based workshops, and we know that it works really well. I have a lot of success when I do this in classes, I picked something that I really wanted to do. I want to eat healthier. I want my kids to see that as well and experience it. So this is something I choose and I think that's really important and I'm breaking it down. It's a really doable and achievable kind of goal. I'm going to meal plan every week and I set aside on my calendar Sunday afternoons. I'll grocery shop. I'll take my daughter with me so she can learn all about that as well. We'll prep all of our veggies and prep our proteins and our grains to go with it. Portion all of that out so that way, even if we get busy, even if life gets in the way, we're still able to achieve that goal. So I tried to break it down into really clear steps to make sure that I could be successful.

Brooke Mainville:

People tend to pick something huge I wanna lose weight. There's so many things that go into losing weight that it's like what part of it do you wanna do? Work on your nutrition? Do you incorporate physical activity? You know, what does it look like? And I like how you said I choose to do, because a lot of people will do things that other people recommend for them, rather than do things that they choose for themselves.

Nicole Wethington:

The"shoulds" can get in the way of, oh, you should do this, but we want to make it something that we enjoy too. We really want to do this.

Brooke Mainville:

And even with action plans, resolutions, self-care, it's different from person to person. I know in one of our workshops, we had an older adult that his action plan was to go chop wood. He really liked going outside and cutting wood. Another one liked to do dishes, and to me, I'm thinking those are more chores, but it's from person to person.

Nicole Wethington:

I think that's where that choice of wanting to do the activity comes in and that whole process is really just a way for us to be able to complete the goals that we set for ourselves.

Brooke Mainville:

Nicole, the sad part is with these resolutions, half of all resolutions fail. Why do you think that is, and what are some things that we can ensure that we succeed?

Nicole Wethington:

Well, a lot of resolutions fail because maybe we don't really want to do it, or we haven't done the preparation, or we haven't broken it down into the small steps to make it realistic. If we're thinking about, I'm going to start going to the gym, that's a fantastic idea, but let's break it down and see which gym do I wanna go to? When am I going to fit this into my schedule? Do I have a friend or a family member who could be an accountability partner and go with me. The more specific and the more prep work we put into this, the more likely we are to be successful.

Brooke Mainville:

I agree with that hundred percent. Sometimes it's a little bit of legwork, getting it even too, do you have the proper gym wear?? Or do I need to get someone to show me how to work out? Maybe they don't know the exercises. There's so many things that go along with it.

Nicole Wethington:

Starting small too. We don't have to do all of it all at once. Starting off just walking around your house, that can be a great way to get into working out.

Brooke Mainville:

In some of our workshops that we've had, some people couldn't even walk to the end of their driveway and then it was small little things that they would do and they would get to the end of their block and then they were able to finish the block. It's starting where you can start and just continue from there.

Nicole Wethington:

Building on those small successes, then we end up with great success.

Brooke Mainville:

Nicole and I hope you have a great holiday, that you really think about what resolution works for you, and if you want to do one, writing down your resolutions or action plans has a huge part in your success as well.

Nicole Wethington:

It does. Research tells us that if we can write it down we are more likely to be successful. And then if we stick it somewhere where we're going to see it, on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, even putting it on your calendar, then we're more likely to follow through.

Brooke Mainville:

These are all great tips, Nicole. I'm so glad that you were able to come. I hope your resolution works out for you as well, and I hope to have you back on Let's Talk About Aging.

Nicole Wethington:

Thanks for having me.

Brooke Mainville:

Thanks for being here. Thanks everyone. Have a great holiday.

Kitty Glomski:

This is Kitty Glomski and Brooke Mainville, with the Calendar of Events. Brooke, you have a Diabetes Path class. It's an interactive online workshop that begins November 16th and runs through December 21st. That's six weeks on every Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Again, that's a Diabetes Path online workshop.

Brooke Mainville:

We have our Powerful Tools for Caregivers workshop virtually meeting on January 11th, and going till February 15th, 2023 from 10 to 11:30. So it's a morning session for those caregivers. The speaker is going to talk about the difference between nursing homes and assisted living, the different types of care and services that they receive in both, how to research information on the facility, and then how to also find inspections, reports was there anything reported? If you're thinking about placing a loved one in one of these, you could get the information and the differences between them. You could register for both of these items through contacting me. That's 989-358-4616. Again, that was 989-358-4616 or you can email me at mainvilleb@nemcsa.org. My information is on our website in our Facebook page So we would love to have you, and those are my two events. So Powerful Tools for Caregivers, six week online workshop, or a one hour caregiver webinar on the Differences Between Assisted Living Homes and Nursing Homes. That's all I have for the calendar of events.

Kitty Glomski:

Thank you, Brooke. With the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program, we also have a New to Medicare virtual presentation. This happens every second Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 11:00. This is for anyone who is turning 65, new to Medicare, or disabled and new to Medicare. This presentation explains how Medicare works. Then afterwards you get to meet one on one with a counselor and talk about your personal situation. To register, you can call 1-800-803-7174 or contact your local Senior Center, your Commission or Council on Aging, and they can make the appointment for you. So this is Kitty Glomski and Brooke Mainville asking you to join us again next time on Let's Talk About Aging.
