THOUGHT
Everybody loves a winner, right? The heroes in our movies, no matter their gender, religion, political affiliation, or age, who find themselves in conflict and overcome their obstacles, are applauded and recognized as conquerors. But in the real world, sometimes the definition of a hero is more complex.
With the recent election, we are witnessing the real-life story of a man who legitimately lost a Presidential election. After he and his followers attempted to restore him to power and failed in 2020, he was investigated and charged with committing financial crimes and sexual assault. His supporters viewed these charges as unfair persecution, casting him as an underdog and rallied behind him for a dramatic comeback. They voted him back into the office of President as their conquering hero.
While the world often elevates figures of power and success as heroes, there is a deeper, spiritual reality that goes beyond earthly victories.
When God created man, it was not for man to be at war with each other. God’s initial instruction to man was to love God and one another. However, once they ate from the tree of Good and Evil, Adam, Eve, and the serpent in the Garden set the stage for the war of humanity to begin—a war that is as spiritual as it can be physical.
God has allowed humanity the ability to choose whether to serve good or evil. Mankind’s choice determines his destiny, his course, and his actions.
Some choose to follow the teachings of the world that emphasize the survival of the fittest. They plot against their own, bring down the poor and the needy, and slay those who stand against them. It is every person for themselves, while indulging in everything that the world has to offer, whether good or evil.
Wickedness dominates the world. They fight battles for power, wealth, fame, and the treasures of the world in their own strength. Loyalty and love of family and friends are often transactional based on what and how much they own. They are constantly trying to find happiness, joy, and peace, all of which are fleeting or come at a price. They abide in a state of struggle. Proverbs 14:12 tells us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof is destruction.”
Others choose to straddle the fence between serving God and the world hoping to gain the benefit from both which leads to spiritual conflict.
Those who choose to serve God and shun evil reap blessings according to the will and purpose of God. They live a life of love and honor. They love God, act justly, have mercy, and walk humbly before God (Micah 6:8). They understand that if they commit their ways to God, trust, and wait patiently, they will have the desires of their hearts. There is no need to conquer others to obtain what they want (Psalms 37:1-40).
Those who find themselves in battle have assurance of the following:• They fight with God ‘s strength to endure.• Even in the midst of battle, God gives peace.• The weapons used in battle have divine power.• God’s perfect love will cast out fear.• Faith will produce outcomes that are not only good but will be complete.• Evil will try to prevail, but love, kindness, and righteousness will win.
Jehovah is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In God’s kingdom, there is no need for a comeback story.
With faith in God, we are more than conquerors!
