THOUGHT
I am an American citizen. I was brought up to believe that I had a heritage of civil rights and the right to privacy, with a system of laws that would judiciously protect and uphold those personal and God-given rights. Yet, as the political landscape shifts, I find myself questioning whether these rights are as secure as I once believed.
At the highest levels of government, changes are stirring uncertainty and fear. The hard-won protections that have shaped a more equitable society are now being challenged. The laws enacted between 1964 and 1990.guaranteed that adults could vote, marry, work, live, and have access to the benefits of citizenship unencumbered by prejudice or malice-based discrimination.
Since the 1960s, humans have produced personal computers, the internet, and smartphones, walked on the moon, and left satellites in orbit to enhance global communications. We have started and ended the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. We have lived through global pandemics, the spread of AIDS, Ebola, and humanitarian crises. Although we are still not living as long as Methuselah, we have made medical advances that have improved life expectancy and quality of life.
Humans have done more in the last 50 years to enhance our existence on this planet than at any other time in recorded history. I belong to the generation that was excited about the heritage we thought our children would inherit. Despite all the achievements I question the kind of legacy we are leaving for future generations.
• Will the constitutional powers that have existed of, by, and for the people of the United States continue to exist under the current political agenda?• Will the economic gap between the top 1% and the bottom 99% become so extreme that human potential to create becomes limited to little more than “just existing?• Will God continue to tolerate the arrogance of humans as they increasingly disregard his commands?
As we consider these questions, we should remember that history has always been shaped by both human choice and divine providence.
The Bible tells of the first covenant that God made with Abraham. God required a strict adherence to divine law and animal blood sacrifices for atonement. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of God's chosen people who would inherit the land of Canaan. That covenant focused on a legacy of possessions and land. However, before they could claim their inheritance, they had to endure four hundred years of slavery in Egypt.
Centuries later God sent his son, Jesus to establish a new covenant. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross gave everyone access to receive a covenantal relationship directly with God.
No matter what lies ahead, God requires His children to:1. Let the love of Christ dwell in our hearts.2. Live with a spirit of repentance3. Show love and compassion to others.4. Understand that death is not eternal for those who believe.5. Walk in confidence knowing that God is in control.
For over 1,900 years, humanity has had an opportunity to live under this promise. But despite the chaos that exists, many of us have chosen to ignore that our lives, our world, and our entire human existence, are at stake. No technological, economic, or political system can offer what only God can provide.
Do not be ruled by fear; live by faith.
Child of God,
Peace is your heritage and the key to God’s kingdom is in your hands.
GOD BLESS YOU!!
