THOUGHT
This week, the word I received was “Truth.”
As I reflected, I came across an essay by American Pastor Rev. John MacArthur titled “What is Truth?” In it, he describes truth as the self-expression of God. He goes further, by calling truth ontological—which simply means Truth is the way things really are.
But that raises a question: Isn’t our understanding of truth shaped by personal perception?
For example: if I interpret your actions as harmful to me, my family or my possessions, I will respond in a way that is defensive and protective. It does not matter to me what your intention is or whether you are trying to defend, protect or help because my reality is my truth.
We often say, “It is, what it is”.
But theologically, speaking it is more accurate to say: “It is, what God says it is.”
This means that living in truth requires more than just personal experience—it requires a relationship with God, and a deep knowledge and understanding of His Word. The discernment that comes with our understanding of the Word of God allows one to “see” the truth more clearly.
Let me give you an example.
Recently, a friend confided that she was hurt and angry because her child had not contacted her on Mother’s Day. She asked: “After all I have done for my child, how could I have been forgotten?”
Her reality - her truth is , “On Mother’s Day, I need my child to validate the importance of our relationship”.
But the child had just bought her a costly gift. Perhaps, in his mind, that was his expression of love. His truth may have been: “The need to say “Happy Mother’s Day” is unnecessary. Meeting her needs has shown that I love, adore and honor her.
Could both realities be truth?
Absolutely! But seeing their situation through the lens of God’s word could have helped them both see the other’s truth.
In this example, the Bible teaches both the parent and the child.
To the parent1 Timothy 5:8 reminds us:
“If anyone does not provide for his own, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
To the child, Proverbs 31:26-27 tells him; “She speaks with wisdom, andaithful instruction is on her tongue. Her children arise and call her blessed…”
If both had looked to the Word of God for guidance, they might have better understood each other’s heart. God’s truth can help us build a shared reality—one grounded in love, understanding, and mutual respect.
This is just one example of how a misunderstanding of truth can damage relationships. When we hold tightly to our own version of reality, we risk living in isolation, bitterness, and even bondage.
Let me ask you:
· Have you experienced broken trust because someone did not acknowledge your truth?· Are you still hurting because of it?· Have you asked God to show you His truth in the situation?
Sometimes, it is not about being right. It is about being aligned with the truth that brings healing and freedom.
To accept and submit to the truth of God is to see clearly, to know with certainty, and to find a life filled with joy everlasting!
GOD BLESS YOU!!
