THOUGHT
There’s no formal job description for being a parent—much less a grandparent. Biology may qualify you, but true effectiveness in this role demands intentionality, wisdom, and a finely honed set of skills shaped by life’s trials and triumphs. So, in the spirit of honoring “Experience,” here’s a heartfelt, unofficial help wanted ad for the world’s most influential role.
Help Wanted: Grandparent
A loving associate seeks a seasoned soul to fill the role of Grandparent—someone with wisdom, presence, and the capacity to love unconditionally.
Job Summary: The ideal candidate will cultivate a nurturing, spiritually rich environment filled with relatable stories, inherited values, and practical know-how. Bonus points for knowing how to cook, fix a leaky faucet, or teach tire repair.
Responsibilities:• Communicate with patience and empathy.• Listen deeply, receiving emotional outpourings with grace.• Be flexible with schedules and emotional tides.• Share humor and wisdom to restore calm.• Love unconditionally—even when behavior is baffling.• Offer guidance that builds clarity and confidence.• Adapt without imposing personal preferences.• If local, be available for 24-hour grandchild duty to give associate time to breathe.
Required Experience:• Basic phone and computer literacy to include texting, emojis & photo sharing.• Know the difference between TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook.• At least 20 years of life experience, including parenting through diapers, multiplication tables. bullying, dating and heartbreaks.• Ability to give advice without bias. Avoiding phrases like: “In my day…” “If it were me…” “You’re wearing that?”• Willingness to endure tech jargon and acronyms before being shown how to send a Graphic Interchange Format.
Expected Outcomes: Exhibit kindness, honesty, and fairness. Encourage thoughtful choices and character growth. Offer wisdom without making approval a condition for love.
Hours: Whenever needed—daily or not for weeks.
Compensation: Paid in hugs, holiday gifts, check-in calls, and spontaneous “I love you’s.”************
Unlike most job postings, this one doesn’t end with “click here to apply.” It ends with a truth: Experience is your greatest qualification—it is not a license to control but rather, it is an invitation to guide.
Your stories, shared with humility, teach how to recover from pain and care for others while growing in independence. Your role is to help the associate become better than you were. You are the bridge between past and future—reflecting those who came before and modeling for those yet to come.
And when giving advice: If it doesn’t align with scripture, or you’re unsure what to say, reconsider. Point them to the Word of God. Encourage them to follow Jesus Christ—not just as Savior, but as the ultimate example of how to live and love.
