THOUGHT
What Is a Moment?
Like time, a moment is relative. It can be as brief as the flap of a hummingbird’s wing or as drawn out as watching paint dry. Moments are shaped by what we believe—spiritually, morally, or culturally—how we feel, what we’ve experienced, and the faith systems we trust.
Some moments leave a lasting impression. Others are fleeting, beautiful, and short-lived. Some transcend the ordinary, stirring deep emotion. Others arrive serendipitously, bringing unexpected joy. Still others evoke nostalgia, reminding us of what once was.
We like to think we control our moments, but many are shaped by forces beyond us—sunshine and rain, light and darkness, good and evil, love and hate. These powers influence our days more than we realize.
Moments shared with others often carry more weight than those we experience alone. Collective moments spark change—sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
Recent global moments remind us of this truth:• On October 7, 2023, during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, a coordinated assault by Hamas killed 1,200 people—shaking communities and nations.• In Sudan, a conflict between former allies escalated into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. As of today, over 25 million face acute food insecurity, and 12.5 million have been displaced.• On January 20, 2025, the 47th President of the United States took office, ushering in sweeping changes aimed at government efficiency. These decisions led to layoffs, policy shifts, and widespread financial insecurity.• At midnight on October 1, 2025, a government shutdown left millions without pay—some furloughed, others forced to work without compensation.
Each of these moments began with decisions.  What were those leaders thinking?Did they believe they were morally, spiritually, or culturally right?  Did they consider the feelings of others?  What past experiences shaped their choices? What faith guided them?
Our moments are precious. Some are involuntary—like a heartbeat or breath. But others are choices, shaped by emotion, experience, belief, and our trust in God.
In those moments—when we vote or remain silent, when we stand for righteousness or allow corruption, when we enforce justice or tolerate lawlessness—we influence not only our lives but the lives of others.
Moments gain value when we choose courage in the face of fear, gentleness in the midst of war, and possibility in the midst of despair. They lose value when hope is needed but hopelessness is all that’s offered.
Each of us has the ability to fill even our smallest moments with care—for ourselves, for one another, and for the world we share.
God has instructed His children to share our moments with wisdom and love
