A wall can be physical, mental, or spiritual. It may be built to separate, protect, or support. But the reasons for building the wall matters.
When a wall is built for protection, its strength depends on the material. It must be impenetrable. Yet walls that protect also isolate. They keep danger out—but they keep life out, too.
During the days of atomic bomb testing, I remember watching documentaries on impenetrable walls that were built to withstand nuclear explosions.  Those “bomb shelters”  were designed to help people survive for years underground.
I often wondered how humanity would change if we were to live in isolation from the world God had created.  Our ability to see the sun, experience the seasons, or dream about the possibility of traveling among the stars, would be replaced by our need to survive.
Would we adapt to our newly protected world?  Or would humans grow weary of the restrictions that the walls of protection provided and try to find a way to escape?
Ironically, humans created the bombs from which we needed to protect ourselves. In the same way, we often create self-made emotional and spiritual walls.  What we build becomes that from which we must find protection.
Walls built from fear, protect from what is feared most. Walls built from deception, protect from insecurity, shame or exposure. Walls built on power or control, protect from fear of loss.   Walls built of trouble and sorrow, protect from negativity and sadness.   Even walls built from love, protect from betrayal.
God calls His children to remove all barriers that keep us from interacting, connecting and caring for one another.  In Ephesians we are urged: “with humility, gentleness, and patience, to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bonds of peace”.
Yes, tearing down the walls makes us vulnerable to being discovered, exposed and offended. But, when love motivates our vulnerability, God becomes our impenetrable protection.   God shields us from dangers, seen and unseen.  God becomes our source of hope and security.
So, what is there to fear? Trust God, follow peace with others and walk in the assurance that the walls that separate us will be removed as we willingly choose to walk together as One Body in Christ Jesus.
Walls may protect, but they also divide.LOVE tears them down,so that CHRIST can build us up TOGETHER!!
