Word of the Week:BOUNDARY
When I sat down to write this part of the protect series, it felt as if the floodgates opened. Suddenly, the boundaries surrounding my understanding were removed. “Boundary” may become a WOW series unto itself, but for now I must honor the lines God has drawn by examining how boundaries protect. Don’t forget to share YOUR OPINIONS about the series with us atosnewton@wow-newton.com
A boundary can be a physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, or even an imaginary line that defines how far someone or something should go. This line of demarcation shapes your decisions and responses and can either protect you from harm or make danger inevitable. Boundaries dictate responsibility, access, and authority. They determine who or what to guard against and who or what to submit to.
For a boundary to be effective, it must be clearly defined and understood. In any game—from hopscotch to major league football—boundaries determine how the game is played and whether a player wins or loses. Likewise, the Word of God clearly outlines the boundaries God’s children are to live within to ensure His blessings, freedom, peace, and protection.
While God’s boundaries never change, changing a boundary automatically changes the game. Geographical boundaries that shift due to climate or geological events can result in property disputes and the redefining of territorial rights. In the same way, changing a personal boundary can impact or even transform a relationship. The stability of a boundary establishes continuity and consistency in how it is honored.
So how do boundaries protect?
Boundaries—like those surrounding a home, city, or country—identify who has the right to expect safety within those borders and who does not. Often, protection is provided by those who share and defend that boundary.
In personal relationships, boundaries are created to protect the autonomy and authority you exercise over your life. They define who you are and determine who, when, and what you will allow into your life—your spirit, your emotions, and your personal space.
In spiritual relationships, boundaries protect the sacred connection between you and God. They reflect the level of authority you allow God to have in teaching and inhabiting your spirit. That relationship determines your access to God’s divine protection over your body, mind, and soul.
The protection afforded by boundaries relies on several important factors:How clearly you communicate the specifics of the boundaryYour commitment to maintaining and enforcing itYour relationship with others who share or respect that boundary.
Protection is both communal and relational, and relational protection is rooted in love. For example:It is our love for God that leads us to honor His boundaries and live within His protection. It is our love for ourselves that helps us establish boundaries that guard our hearts, minds, and spirits from moral or spiritual disruption. It is our love for our families that sets boundaries teaching them how to protect one another. And it is our love for humanity that establishes boundaries allowing communities to live in peace.
Without love, a boundary will not stand, nor can it truly protect.
God has set boundaries for the seas and for the forces that keep us connected to the earth, yet He has also given humanity the freedom to choose. And although humanity continues to struggle with honoring personal and communal boundaries, we are reminded in Romans 12:18 to strive to live in peace with everyone, as far as it depends on us, while God continues molding humanity into what He created us to be.
Remember:Healthy boundaries create blessings and protection—not restriction.
