BETRAYAL

So far in our PROTECT Series, we have discussed the boundaries that shape how, when, and why we need protection. We have learned that based on our knowledge, faith, and experience, we will choose the most appropriate weapon or strategy to provide protection or security for those with whom we share a relational connection.

We have also determined that this relational connection creates an atmosphere of trust—an assurance that we do not stand alone. It means that no matter the threat, you can protect and be protected.

But protection can be put at risk.

How?

When jealousy, selfishness, hatred, instability, or deceit are allowed to take root, they disrupt trust and infect the relational connection. These spiritual fractures create an environment where protection is violated, withheld, or rejected.

Such was the case with the sons of Jacob, whose story is told in Genesis 37.

Jacob—also known as Israel—had twelve sons. Joseph, the firstborn of Rachel, was his beloved. That affection stirred anger in his brothers.

Yet, Joseph trusted them. In his innocence, he felt safe sharing his dreams. But the dreams he shared hinted at a future in which his brothers would bow before him—even the stars bowed in obedience. These dreams fueled their jealousy.

Their anger, hatred, and envy broke the bond of brotherly love and the trust that should have protected Joseph from danger.

They plotted to get rid of him.

They became the danger. The relational connection that should have protected Joseph was replaced by the most painful violation of protection: betrayal.

Betrayal has Satan as its author. It is painful and destructive. It is one of the most devastating human experiences because it comes from within the very relationship that was meant to provide safety and covering.

John 10:10 tells us:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”

Betrayal is the thief’s tool. It steals trust, kills joy, and destroys relationships. Betrayal cannot build boundaries of protection. Instead, it becomes the threat. It becomes a weapon.

And that weapon can take many forms—

  • as small as a “little white lie,”
  • as self-serving as withholding information or failing to give a warning,
  • as life-altering as selling someone into bondage,
  • or as catastrophic as murder.

But… after the semicolon comes your hope.

It is the promise of Jesus—the Good Shepherd—to protect you, lead you, and give you abundant life.

It is Jesus who comforts your soul after betrayal.

It is Jesus who mends your broken heart after deception is revealed.

It is Jesus who turns your sadness into unspeakable joy.

Betrayal is not the end.

It is the beginning of the next part of your journey—a journey that can be reconstructed into a life of joy and peace. A life protected by the blood-bought insurance that only a relationship with Jesus can provide.

Remember: Even when friends forsake you… you are never alone.

God’s protection is your assurance. His grace and mercy will follow you all the days of your life.

God’s protection isn’t about avoiding pain—it’s about surviving it with purpose

Psalm 91:1

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
