43.5 The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende Part 2

In this week’s episode, Kayla and Taylor discuss the second half of Isabel Allende’s 1985 novel The House of the Spirits. Topics include Jean de Satigny, Count of Kink, realities of revolution, and the power of women (Transito Soto for president??)

This week’s drink: Pisco Sour via liquor.com

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 oz pisco
  • 1 oz lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • Garnish: Angostura bitters

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add pisco, lime juice, simple syrup and egg white into a shaker and dry-shake (without ice) vigorously.
  2. Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. (Alternatively, you can strain it into a rocks glass over fresh ice.)
  4. Garnish with 3 to 5 drops of Angostura bitters. Using a straw, toothpick or similar implement, swirl the bitters into a simple design, if desired.

  • 2 ounces Gosling’s Black Seal rum
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • Ginger beer, to top (about 5 ounces)
  • Garnish: lime wheel


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add rum and lime juice to a tall glass filled with ice.
  2. Top with the ginger beer.
  3. Garnish with a lime wheel.
