Evil Empire Music by RATM
Speaker 1You're quasi-evil, you're semi-evil. You're the margarine of evil. You're the Diet Coke of evil. Just one calorie, not evil enough.
Speaker 2All right, thank you for listening to the Greatest Non-Hits. I'm Chris and playing a riff from the song Snake Charmer from Rage Against the Machine's second album, evil Empire is my co-host, tim.
Speaker 2Thank you so much for tuning in today. And this is Evil Empire, the second studio album by the American rock band Rage Against the Machine, from Wikipedia, released on April 16, 1996 by Epic Records. This has a couple of songs on it that we all know. I mean by far the biggest song, bulls on Parade. All right, I think it's like the second or third track on this one, and we've all heard that one. A second song that was also released as a single. There are really three songs released as a single Bulls on Parade, of course, people of the Sun and Viet Now, and I think the order the first three songs is People of the Sun, bulls on Parade, vietnam, something like that. But what we're going to do, as always, is listen to all the songs on the album. Rank the top three non-hits at the end.
Speaker 2So, in terms of my origin story, I've been listening to this one for a while. I actually got into it, probably like in the mid-2000s, maybe about 10 years after it was released. I was a late bloomer to this band, but man, clearly an anti-authoritarian kind of a message, I mean blatant, it's right in your face, it can't be mistaken and so. But that's the MO. They're so committed, they're so into their convictions and it comes through in the music Interesting, thought-provoking lyrics. They have a history of a lot of different activism for anything that's anti-authoritarian. So all good stuff. We're not going to get into the political side of it, Of course. We're going to do our own thing. We're going to get stupid. We're going to get silly. We're going to listen to all the songs and we've got a bunch of stupid sound clips. We're going to have to all the songs and we've got a bunch of stupid sound clips. We're going to have a lot of fun with this and also, you know, celebrate a kick-ass album. You know, not just the rock and music.
Speaker 2But we'll get into the lyrics We'll get into the deepness of it, but I think we can do two things at once. You know, have fun with it as well, although I mean we'll be respectful for sure. But uh, um, we're gonna. It's gonna be a good show. We're really stoked to do it, we're we're both big fans of the band. The lineup is, uh, zach della roccia on vocals, tom arello on guitar, of course, tim Comerford on bass and then my favorite, brad Wilk on drums.
Speaker 5No man, you can't talk to Brad. I can't talk to Brad. No one knows who Brad is.
Speaker 2So anyway, yeah, that was actually Dana Carvey from the movie Moving Stupid movie, but that part's hilarious, I liked it. So, anyway, what else can we say? There's how many songs? There's 11 songs on here. Don Rodeo's good. For some reason I don't know if it strikes me as a hit, but it wasn't even released as a single. So I mean, we're going to count that as a non-hit. There's a lot of people who contributed to this as well.
Speaker 2Rage Against the Machine, co-produced Brendan O'Brien production so yeah, I guess yeah, he's worked with a lot of people Soundgarden, acdc, pearl Jam so I'm sure you know. Great job, brendan. Awesome awesome album. Let's see who else Andy Wallace mixing, nick Didia engineering. Shout out to Nick Dave Ratt Paul.
Speaker 4Kosky.
Speaker 2Bob Ludwig Mastering recording all that, a lot of mastering going on.
Speaker 7Wait just a minute.
Speaker 4So, anyway, I've got some artwork.
Speaker 2Pretty funky album cover. It's got like a picture of a kid, looks like a young Superman, but with an E for Evil Empire, with a black cape, red shirt, white and black stripes. So it's kind of superhero, macho man type A kind of thing. The title Evil Empire came from a speech by Ronald.
Speaker 2Reagan in the 80s as he addressed the Soviet Union as the evil empire. Of course I think they're sort of twisting that around and trying to point out the irony of Reagan's statements when we were doing a bunch of shit all over, but it's not just directed towards the US. It's just. I mean, a lot of the songs borrow from history. People of the Sun talks about oppression, the decimation of the whole. I don't know, the Spanish against the Mayans or maybe the opposite Mayans against the Spanish Tim will give us the lowdown on that.
Speaker 2He's a history guy. What else can we say here? Yeah, epic Records, the genre you know it mixes a lot of different things. There's rap, there's metal. There's rap metal, there's alternative. I want to say there's a little bit of grunge here and there. They're coming off of their debut album and then Streets of Los Angeles, the third album. That was Tim's first exposure, or Battle of Los Angeles, that's what it is so anyway, we'll get into that as well.
Speaker 2You know what else can we say? Shout out to the runners Thank you so much for listening. Keep continuing to listen to our podcasts. We love it. We hope you do too. And shout out to some of the sponsors Makoko, of course. Nicaraguan Blend, happy Fun Ball, still legal in 16 states. Thank you for being a proud sponsor of the show. What else have we got on the agenda here? Tim and I are going to look through the albums, see if we can get some more of this ilk or maybe go less heavy, but this is a heaviness that Tim can get into. So we're both. I'm excited for it. So, without further ado, he's getting his book ready. He's getting all organized, putting the headset on. He can't wait to talk here. He is my neighbor, tim. How you doing bud?
Speaker 8Oh, so much rage.
Speaker 2You got a lot of rage, don't you? Yes?
Speaker 8I mean it's there, it's really there.
Speaker 7I'm untethered and my rage knows no bounds.
Speaker 8Yeah, Battle of Los Angeles was when I guess I was what? 16 17, you're angsty. You know rage against machine. Did I understand everything they were saying? No, did I later have to re-listen and re-pontificate where they were going with these lyrics and how maybe fringe they are for a lot of people? Anti-establishment shouldn't be such a fringe thing and it needs to be talked about. Talk amongst yourselves here.
Speaker 2Yeah, no, I agree, they're edgy. This is as edgy as it gets, and so of course you know it takes a while to warm up to it, and what I was saying before is that the more you listen to it, the more it sinks in. It's. It's a little harsh, you know, in the beginning, you know, but the more you listen to it, the the more you you kind of get it. You You've got to think Carl Spackler from Caddyshack, you know.
Speaker 6It's a little harsh.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 8I was trying to think up my own little Zach DeLaRocca rhyme of what my political beliefs are, but it came. It was on the tip of my tongue. I was kind of wrapping my little day out with this Right on as an exercise. But no, I didn't write anything down for you all to experience, kind of just.
Speaker 2Well no I mean, if you're listening, you've got your own opinions and listen. We love to hear them. If you ever want to drop us a line at greatestnonhitscom, you can email us the man. You can shout out Down with the man. That's right. Yeah, give us a shout out anytime, man. But any last words before we start listening to the album.
Speaker 8Yeah, anti-establishment.
Speaker 2Keep that in mind All right, of course, anti-authoritarianism, all that stuff.
Speaker 8Justice. You know, no, man, you can't talk to Brad. Drummer. The drummer he's yeah, is there a Nixon? There's a Nixon part of this quote. Hold on, let's let it ride.
Speaker 5Nixon knew I can't talk to Brad. No one knows who Brad is man.
Speaker 10I love him. He's beautiful. I can't get close to him. Shit man. Nixon knew man. I don't even know my political affiliation.
Speaker 8Nixon knew, I don't even know, yeah, exactly what is this band's political affiliation Anarchy.
Speaker 2Well you know a lot of the times we're living in anarchy and just don't accept it.
Speaker 8I think yeah, you think they're. Yeah, I think they want to Center left?
Speaker 2No, I don't know.
Speaker 8I don't think they have the best plan to build it back. What they are about is calling out the injustice and the what's the right word. They're trying to right the wrongs of the past by calling it out Authoritarian dictators.
Speaker 2How do you go?
Speaker 8I mean, they're talking about centuries back as well.
Speaker 2So but it's happening right now. I mean, they have like shit all over it. Does you know?
Speaker 8people that are aligned with nature and people that uh want to, you know, get you into the big cities and control the food supply.
Speaker 4Maybe you know, all right, like what the fuck is he talking about?
Speaker 2where is that I?
Speaker 6got it you got.
Speaker 2What the fuck are you talking about?
Speaker 8I don't know you got it you got it.
Speaker 2What the fuck?
Speaker 4the fuck is he talking about?
Speaker 8well, hey, it's a thing, look it up.
Speaker 1But yeah, I hear you, it's uh how ironic all right, all right.
Speaker 2So, people of the sun, this is the first song here we go, so from Geniuscom. It's written in dedication to the original inhabitants of Mexico Slaughtered by Spanish conquistadors.
Speaker 8Okay, that's oh Tet. Shout out to McNamara, shout out to the Buckeyes. Anti-shout is a natural.
Speaker 7Round and round and round, chaotic.
Speaker 2I'm not going to continue.
Speaker 6Ah, that feels, I feel, I feel better.
Speaker 8I like the bongos. Is that Brad Brad on the bongos? No man.
Speaker 2That is Brad on the bongos.
Speaker 5You can't talk to Brad. Let's see your rap Stick over.
Speaker 10Let's see you around, they go around. They go around again. They just go around and around, around and around.
Speaker 8Shout out to the anti-sunscreeners out there.
Speaker 6Beef tallow. Beef tallow, that feels better.
Speaker 2All right, okay was so. That that's who they are, man, they're right in your face. You know that was a hit too 230.
Speaker 8That was a good one all right.
Speaker 2Second song bulls on parade a hit, let's go. Shout out to all the evil ones out there. Shout out to Dr Evil.
Speaker 1Share. I'm the head of an evil organization I don't share. Okay, you freaking idiot. Share.
Speaker 9We're winning now.
Speaker 8We're winning. Now I'm it. Now he's got the microphone, drop it on, copy yo.
Speaker 2Five-sided fist again. I love it.
Speaker 7What is he talking about?
Speaker 1We'll do it, live, fuck it.
Speaker 6It's happening.
Speaker 2Rally around the family.
Speaker 1Don't mess with the family, or else you're gonna get jacked bitch.
Speaker 7You bitch, you got jacked bitch used to be a library there.
Speaker 8There used to be a library there Military industrial Do it live.
Speaker 7Are you some kind of freak?
Speaker 2Okay, oh, dr Evil's getting a little worn out.
Speaker 1Okay, you're quasi evil. Honestly, throw me a bone here this is an amazing guitar solo.
Speaker 2Yeah, it is it's kind of like scratching with a guitar I have one simple request request Scratchy, scratchy lasers with sharks.
Speaker 1And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads.
Speaker 2Every anti-authoritarian's nightmare right.
Speaker 8I've contained my rage for as long as possible. Hey, brad, brad is awesome. Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 11Crushed it.
Speaker 6But I shall unleash my fury.
Speaker 2They're all in the pocket together. They play really well together.
Speaker 8Shout out to Dennis Holy Sonny Lots of cymbals In society that you should be following, but also the drum cymbals are good.
Speaker 2Yeah, he is kind of shy with the symbols.
Speaker 7Upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves be gone, vile man be gone from me.
Speaker 8Shout out Dennis, Thank you. Thank you, Dennis.
Speaker 2Thank you, Dennis.
Speaker 8Don't buy a used car, a starter car for your daughter. With Dennis as the salesman here, exactly what do we?
Speaker 6got Vietnam.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 6Ready.
Speaker 8Well, first, you know, I definitely you know, pay homage to uh. I want to pay homage to my research I did Vietnam, uh, oh yeah, so I see you like a thesis.
Speaker 8uh, went through all the presidents, the Vietnam through political cartoons. It was a great, uh great paper. So you know, I know what you're saying, zach, I know what you're saying, band, and you know why. More conflicts? What is this? Let's go, but we gotta, we gotta undo the points of contention of previous wars to understand future wars yeah, check out the big brain on uh on tim there okay, there you go all right all right yeah I'm down with that all right, uh, any last words.
Speaker 2okay, here's Vietnam, vietnam.
Speaker 8You also have a? Yeah, don't you have a?
Speaker 2Well, my observation with this song is that this riff is like the wanton song. This is like Zeppelin Wow, wow.
Speaker 8Should we hear that ISO? Yeah, yeah, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh wrong, it's the lip. You just hit the lip on that one I did, brother, holy Crash. Wow, it's the lip. You just hit the lip on that one, brother. Holy snikies.
Speaker 7Nicely done. Wait, how did you?
Speaker 8Well, do it live. How did you find that your riff brain just picked that up out?
Speaker 2of nowhere. Yes, my riff brain picked it up. That's pretty good. I've heard the Wanton song a bunch of times. When I heard this I was like, oh, I get it. What the hell. This song is great. Shut down, the devil's sound Programs will free it now.
Speaker 7Shut down the devil's sound, dear, fuck it. Nah, fuck it.
Speaker 2Turn it off Beer is your only guide on the radio. Nah, fuck it. The cool thing about that is that this is fashion in American media, ie guys like Bill O'Reilly.
Speaker 8Yeah, hey.
Speaker 7That's why it's like do it live.
Speaker 2It's a play on how modern media mimics that of the partiest era of politics, the media that led to the American public and doesn't send troops to China, okay. And they even say one of the songs main riff is oh, wow, okay, this is from. I did get that on my own really. Yeah, it's kind of odd. I did get that Really. Yeah, it's kind of odd when you know the one song is always right.
Speaker 8Fear and love. Alright, it's a spectrum.
Speaker 2It's all the world chairs. The church is like sad Also.
Speaker 8We should talk about how the road to good intention is paved with hell. What is it? Hell is paved with good intention. What is it? You know what I'm?
Speaker 2saying yeah, okay, yeah, I mean.
Speaker 8I mean we build jails and churches out of seemingly good ideas. But I mean, I don't know, I get it.
Speaker 12What the fuck is he talking about? Fuck?
Speaker 8It's just ironic.
Speaker 1How ironic yeah.
Speaker 8I like this one. I mean it's definitely, it's a hit.
Speaker 2We're calling it a hit. It's releasing a single.
Speaker 8I don't directly remember it from the radio, but I mean it's a single and it was heavy play. Oh, guillotine, Okay, your savior, my guillotine crosses and kerosene.
Speaker 4There's your only God Fear and love.
Speaker 9Fear is in the negative energy spectrum and love is in the positive energy spectrum.
Speaker 2Donnie Darko right. Donnie Darko yeah, shout out to the Darko heads out there. All right, so this is Revolving.
Speaker 8I love this intro. Are you here with us? Is everybody here At?
Speaker 11the place you call here and now. Say it first we support your war of terror.
Speaker 10Shots for air.
Speaker 8I have a double meaning here with this one. This is Sure.
Speaker 2So this song could be referring to a pattern of domestic abuse like a revolving door. It could also be about a woman who thinks about killing her abusive husband with a revolver. It may have a double meaning. I'm a genius.
Speaker 8The meaning is circular.
Speaker 2They go around the block. That's right. There was more than a word.
Speaker 1Honestly throw me a Sorry.
Speaker 9Might be that was me, a prize fighter, throw me. Sorry. Might be that was me. Yeah, he's a prize fighter, a prize fighter.
Speaker 3He bought rings like Tyson. Make me come back for him now he's swinging, pay attention, he's the champion, pay attention. I don't have all night shout out to Mike Tyson, make me come back for him, pay attention. I don't have all night Shout out to Mike Tyson Don't make me come back for him.
Speaker 8Yeah, brad, start it up. Brad. Brad on the drums is a war on terror, I swear, I swear Revolver.
Speaker 9Your mother made the father Revolver. She's like.

Speaker 2Oh wait, just a minute, we never go out with a loaded gun, guys, that's okay, she's certain.
Speaker 10There's more Pictures of fields without fences A spotless domain.
Speaker 6Hides festering hopes. She's certain there's more.
Speaker 10Pictures of fields without fences. Her body numbs as he approaches the door.
Speaker 1As he approaches the door. Are they ill-tempered?
Speaker 9Absolutely. That's a start.
Speaker 8That's a starch, it's a revolver, you know.
Speaker 9Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters.
Speaker 1All I asked for was a frickin' rotating chair. Okay, Are they ill-tempered? We're okay.
Speaker 2All right, Tom Morello Put the stamp on it, oh yeah, stamp approval here Okay.
Speaker 1You're quasi-evil.
Speaker 8Oh, it's like a rotating chair.
Speaker 6Okay, okay, okay, ah, that, Ah, that feels, that feels better.
Speaker 2Oh no, Another Santa.
Speaker 11Round and round.
Speaker 8We're not letting you off the hook that easy.
Speaker 9Tune back in wake up.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 8I have contained my rage for as long as possible.
Speaker 2Okay, wow, that was that song was like about a minute and a half too. As long as possible. Okay, Wow, that was that song was like about a minute and a half too long, I think.
Speaker 8Yeah, it went for another, another dip.
Speaker 2Yeah, it just seems like a little filler.
Raging Against the Machine
Speaker 8It went for another little dip in the pool. Anyway, should we, should we, have some more Dr Dr Evil? You know it is about combating the evil empire. It really is, and I think they do that well here.
Speaker 1Getting a little afraid. I need an old priest and a young priest. The power of Christ compels you.
Speaker 2All right, that was a great segue to Snake Charmer. This is the song you did.
Speaker 8I was going to do a little on ukulele, but that would be great.
Speaker 2I mean, I can still grab it right. Do Rage on the ukulele.
Speaker 8It brought to mind a Hawaiian beachfront territory. Shout to the Blue Roofers out there. Yeah, the Speedloos. Shout out to the Blue Roofers out there. Yeah, speed Roof, yeah, vocal and spotlights. Sweet Indulgent Fluid.
Speaker 7Oh shit, I need an adult.
Speaker 2I like the end of the song, you know, Starting to say I'm interested in you. It's like that.
Speaker 8Yeah, a lot of symbols.
Speaker 11So many symbols.
Speaker 2Shout out to Borat.
Speaker 6It's a little harsh, you know. You know it's a little harsh.
Speaker 12Okay, you know what I think, man Like the bingo, I think, therefore, you Are.
Speaker 8Shots being fired, american hell. Nixon didn't tell me about that, can't talk to that.
Speaker 2Brad's on drums holding it down. Hey, shout out to Brendan O'Brien. Producer.
Speaker 8Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tom Morello was one of my favorites growing up, I mean the solos that he does.
Speaker 2It's transformative, his style there's transformative, his style. Eddie Van Halen already did that.
Speaker 4I'm not interested in you. What's?
Speaker 8up Jason. Shout out to Courtney Ryan yeah, courtney Are not interested in you. Are not interested in you. She's a YouTube relationship, life coach, counselor, guru on YouTube. Speaker 2Is it Courtney O'Brien? It's Courtney Ryan, oh, courtney Ryan. Oh O'Brien's the producer. Okay, courtney Ryan. Well, courtney Ryan, oh, o'brien's the producer. Okay, courtney Ryan. Two truths can be. You can hold two truths at the same time. I like Courtney Ryan and I like Rage Against the Machine.
Speaker 6Yes.
Speaker 2It's not an either-or yeah. Shout-out to Tim Coleman, comer On the bass, digging it. It's a sink in the trash. Yeah, all of that filth In the break. There's a break, there's one.
Speaker 3But we're all gonna Go. We're already dead. We're already dead. By the way, man, where did you get that cop car from?
Speaker 2There's just like black on it.
Speaker 8This is written to celebrate the death of Nixon. How cool, according to Zach, nixon did.
Speaker 2According to Zach Nixon knew no man.
Speaker 5You can't talk to Brad. I can't talk to Brad. No one knows who Brad is, man I love him.
Speaker 10He's beautiful. I can't get close to him. Shit man. Nixon. Knew man. I don't even know my political affiliation Shit Nixon knew what did he.
Speaker 8I don't even know my political affiliation. Shit Nixon knew. What did he know.
Speaker 1Redacted Voice my aspirations for world domination.
Speaker 7I want to wear a pair of dark sunglasses. I want to be Jackie O-O-O-O, please don't die.
Speaker 4Okay, okay.
Speaker 8Okay, who's Jackie? Throw me a bone here. What?
Speaker 1Honestly throw me a bone here.
Speaker 6Oh, bitch, you got jacked bitch.
Speaker 8I like the riff. It's a great riff, jeez.
Speaker 2I like how it goes into the next song.
Speaker 7We'll do it, live, fuck it.

Speaker 2Let's change to the power of war, your war of terror. Lot of symbols on this one, oh yeah.
Speaker 8I plead the fifth Shout out to the Law and Order fans. Plead the fifth. It's never going to go well for you Rolling doobies, I'm sorry what.

Speaker 7It's tricky, it's tricky. Those babies can go off.
Speaker 8Can't go out with a loaded gun Shotgun.
Speaker 7Wait, just a minute.
Speaker 8You're sending my fingers for a circular dimension bending experience here.
Speaker 1Are they ill-tempered?
Speaker 8A night funeral.
Speaker 2Yeah, I mean, this is basically about sleep.
Speaker 8You gotta admit it. I guess it makes sense Right to wrong somehow. It's a little harsh. Should we check in?
Speaker 12See how Saul's doing, saul, how you doing.
Speaker 7Hi, oh, hello, hello. He can't hear us.
Speaker 8The music's too loud Down Rodeo Drinking some beer.
Speaker 12Yep Beer.
Speaker 6Yep Beer, yep Shut, the quiet people down Wow.
Speaker 9Shut the quiet people down.
Speaker 6That feels better A little change.
Speaker 8There's no ballads on this album.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, they don't have a ballad.
Speaker 8I think a ballad would have been a good idea now that I look back at the album, but that's not what they're about. Yeah, no, that won't be tolerated.
Speaker 1Let this be a reminder to you all that this organization will not tolerate failure.
Speaker 2Okay without a face, here we go.
Speaker 8I like the funky part of this. It's got a little jazz bass line.
Speaker 2You know, like Revolver, it's kind of like James Brown. There's like a James Brown kind of Quality to it.
Speaker 7I'm not a star ball. What Like in the face?
Speaker 2Fuck a cat.
Speaker 7You saw that what the hell was that, you little freckle face cartoon. Is that like a?
Speaker 2authoritarian movement, without maybe like China, I don't know, there's no real figurehead, but the war is on, yeah. Or war without a face, I don't know, maybe.
Speaker 7My age was all we needed to sustain our golden skin. First, you set the side right and that was DDT. Yeah, you know me. I'm great for the greats. Brought this with the bourgeoisie War. Take woman, pat this blue binoculars, I'm at it north, like my name was kids. Great for the greats. Brought this with the bourgeoisie.
Speaker 2One motive no hope War. Take woman.
Speaker 7I'm trying to breathe a wheelchair around my throat or I'll strangle the man who's a looch hacker since Kirk and Carl when I try to cross the white wall but if you don't change your face, I'm gonna change it for you.
Speaker 2The white wall what does he mean by white walls?
Speaker 8walk unseen past the graves, walk unseen the gates.
Speaker 2It's the graves and gates Graves and gates.
Speaker 8Hey, mitch, let's ask Mitch if he knows.
Speaker 10Hey Mitch, Could you do the rest of us a favor and leave through the gate and right field? I kind of like this guitar solo.

Speaker 2It's beyond just the lyrics.
Speaker 8There's a spirit, an authenticity behind the drive and Tom goes with these melodic dystopian effect guitar solos to actually mix it up and slow down the pace and sort of give a breather instead of double down. Yeah, on more thrasher heaviness, okay. Yeah, especially this. I like this a lot, man.
Speaker 12It's just, it ain't complicated you. You have a baby born into this world and they've got no goddamn friends and got nothing but to come in and find out all about them. Old evil man.

Provocative Lyrics and Discussion

It's so like it's just so powerful it is. These people ain't seen a brown skin man since their grandparents bought one. That's pretty strong language, you know. That's like pretty, yeah, like yeah, not mincing words, you know, yeah. So you make a, you make a move and plead the fifth, cause you can't plead the first. That was kind of that's a cool line as well.
Speaker 8So it packs such. You know history and the constitution in these quick lines but you really have to think about it.
Speaker 3Yeah, Um very thought provoking.
Speaker 8And definitely encourage you know novice rage listeners to really yeah, very thought provoking and definitely encourage you know, novice rage listeners to really yeah, dig deep, really dig deeper and deeper into these lyrics.
