Today is going to be an album for the ages, blues Traveler's fourth album, titled Four, which was released in 1994. So big, huge breakout album for this band. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 albums chart and it's known for Runaround and this song, hook, which charted at number eight and number 23, respectively. So it's according to Wikipedia. So let's talk about the lineup. Now for the band they're still current and active. They're out there. The current members are John Popper, chan Chinchilla, brandon Hill or Brendan Hill sorry, tad Chinla and Ben Wilson. I think Ben Wilson's keyboard, tad Chinchilla's bass he's the brother, younger brother, of the guitar player, chan Chinchilla, brendan Hill is percussion and John Popper is vocals and harmonica. So that's where they get their distinct sound, because they're bluesy, they're rock, they're folk, they're alternative, they're a jam band, they're kind of southern rock and they're sort of in that space. I can go on and on. They've got all kinds of credentials. I think this album went 6X platinum Favorite band of David Letterman. I didn't realize that. I think I read somewhere that they're also the band that's played the most on Late Night with David Letterman of all time.

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, tim can weigh in on that, but nevertheless their origins early, like mid-80s. I guess they had met in their hometown of Princeton, new Jersey and added players on the way On this album.

at the time, 1994, it was Brendan Hill on percussion. At the time 1994, it was Brendan Hill on percussions, chan on guitar, john Popper vocals harmonica and then Bobby Sheehan was the bass player. He also did backing vocals on Brother John as well. Nevertheless, he tragically passed away in 1999, and that was sort of an inflection point. They kind of changed directions. They ended up bringing in Tad Chan's younger brother, but nevertheless most of the band has been intact for quite a long time. So despite the tragedy with Sheehan, bobby Sheehan they've been able to survive. There's Popper's obesity, struggling with weight problems, but they're still at it, still doing good. The very beginning was an interview, like a rare 90s interview, with John Popper and Chan sitting next to him.

Anyway, we're going to do what we always do. We're going to listen to the album, we're going to yuck it up a lot, we've got hilarious sound clips, tim's going to join us and we're going to have him weigh in on things. But after we start listening to everything, we'll rank the top three non-hits at the end and then we'll call it a wrap from there. But, with that being said, probably there are two singles. There's Runaround, which is the song that really broke for them, and then the song Hook that Tim played, played. He's doing Pachelbel Now he's going back into hook. So anyway, uh, but yeah, those are the. Give me the two hits, and so I think everything else is a non hit. There's a song called the mountain winds again, or mountains win again, which was, uh, on a bush like commercial that you probably heard, or maybe you remember or not it doesn't matter, but anyway that's kind of in there.

I I wouldn't call it a hit only just because it's in the background of a commercial, but uh, nevertheless, uh, we'll throw that in there. I don't know if it's gonna go anywhere, probably not with me, but nevertheless that's what we're gonna do today. We're happy to bring along with us. So there are some additional musicians on here. Um, there's adam brody at backing vocals. Warren haynes to slide guitar on the mountains win again. Uh, basheri johnson does some percussions. Chuck lavelle, piano keyboards. That guy's a legend. I learned something every time I do these podcasts. Paul schaefer did keyboards on stand, okay. Uh, pete kovacevic, sitar and tambura. I hope I pronounce his name right. Uh, john O Manson, vocals on Brother John. All right. Steve Thompson production Okay, most of these songs are written by John Popper doing collaboration with Chan.

I don't know, we can get into that later. Let's go back to the history of the formation. It was, I think John Popper and Brendan Hill formed a band called the Establishment Hill's brother was on bass and a rotating roster of guitarists. Okay, they did some cassettes. They did covers of Gloria and Battle Hymn of the Republic. That's weird. Chan was a football player and a guitarist, promising athlete committed to music instead of uh, I guess he had knee injury, so no more football for him. Uh popper met bassist bobby, uh, bobby sheehan. They became friends and he joined as the new bass player for Blues Band, I guess in 1987. And I guess they did Okay.

So the album cover has a cat on it and I guess those four Chan Popper, sheehan and Drummer did some jam sessions. They later called it the Black Cat Jam and that spawned core grooves for their first album. So a black cat also happened to be nearby. So they took it as a sign and adopted the black cat as their mascot figure, which four years later, is on the album cover of this. So there's like a cat with sunglasses, there's Blues Traveler with sunglasses, there's blues traveler, etc. So anyway, we're uh, yeah, we're. So we're seven minutes in and uh, we're gonna, but tim's gonna wrap it up. We're gonna again, you know.
