The songs everyone knows from Only By The Night aren’t the whole story. We set aside the monster singles and go searching for the cuts that turned a big rock record into a lasting companion—tracks with space to breathe, edges that scrape, and melodies that stick for reasons other than radio. From the haunted hush of Closer to the grit and drive of Crawl, we unpack why these performances work and how the band’s family chemistry locks the groove into place.

We trace the band’s journey—early buzz overseas, the 2008 breakout, and the Grammys that followed—then zoom in on the parts often missed: Angelo Petraglia’s production choices, the interplay of staccato rhythm and stretched vocals, and the fingerprints of influences like Pixies, Thin Lizzy, and the Beach Boys. Manhattan and Revelry get their due as mood pieces that ride the line between indie cool and heart-on-sleeve confessional, while Cold Desert closes the loop with country-tinged glow and a late-night confession that lingers long after the last chord.

Our dark horse favorite, Be Somebody, becomes the centerpiece: a soaring chorus, a bassline that sings, and an arrangement that opens wider with each pass. It’s the sound of a band stepping onto a bigger stage without losing its scruff or soul. If you’ve only met this album through Sex On Fire and Use Somebody, consider this your invitation to hear the rest with fresh ears. Hit play, tell us your top three non-hits, and if this breakdown made you re-listen, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a quick review to help others find the show.

Ground Rules: What Counts As A Hit

Band Backstory And Accolades

SPEAKER_03

Alright, thank you for listening to the Greatest Non-Hits. I'm Chris, and playing Crawl from Only by the Night is my co-host Tim. So again, thank you for listening to the Greatest Non-Hits. Only by the Night by Kings of Leon is gonna be the album that we're gonna be listening to and ranking the top three non-hits. So um really excited. Um I should probably say that it's been a few weeks since we've uh done a podcast, so we've been missing in action for a little while. Um Tim had a little bit of a hand accident, so uh it wasn't like a Brad Hamilton kind of a thing or anything. I think it was a lazy Susan was involved. So uh anyway, he'll he'll expand on that when uh when he uh puts the guitar down. But in the meantime, uh yeah, this Only by the Night um is the fourth studio album by Kings of Leon. Uh it was released on September of 2008. I think the recording started somewhere around February of that year in uh Blackbird Studios in Berry Hill, Tennessee. Uh Kings of Leon are uh natives of uh yeah state of Tennessee. I think Mount Juliet was the name of the city. Uh I learned a lot, you know, about this uh band in the last uh couple weeks of uh listening to the songs. Great album. Um They're the kind of band that uh I would say you like all their songs, but they're not your they're not your favorite band, but you like you like what they do, you know, and um a lot of people do as well. Um they've won many Grammys. Uh I think four or three or four up until something like that. But anyway, I think a couple are here on this album. Uh we'll we'll have to look into it. Uh it peaked at number one on the uh Billboard Alternative Songs list at the time. Uh Notion is uh one of their singles. I guess Crawl was listed as a single. Revelry, you somebody. The big ones are Sex on Fire and You Somebody. So, like coming into this, and I don't know, I've heard Revelry like on the radio, Crawl, Closer. A lot of really good songs on this album. I mean, we were kind of debating which of the songs were were gonna be considered hits or singles. You know, for me, I'm thinking I I guess it's kind of personal for everybody, especially with this band. So I'm gonna say like Sex on Fire and You Somebody are the big ones for me. Those are the ones I would exclude and then uh uh rank the rest of them. Um if uh Tim has a little bit more familiarity with, let's say, closer, uh he can he can leave that one out. But uh anyway, uh Sex on Fire, You Somebody should be off the list. Everything is uh on the table. Uh there is like a bonus track, uh Frontier City, that was released after. We're excluding that. We're not even gonna listen to that. So um that's on like I said, that's off the table. Um what else can I say about this band? Uh I received a nomination for best rock album at the 51st Grammy Awards with Sex on Fire. So, yeah, that received two nominations for uh Best Rock Performance by a duo or group uh with vocal and best rock song. Uh Sex on Fire was awarded uh with the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo with vocals on February 8th. Uh 52nd Grammy Awards, uh You Somebody uh well, it says You Somebody won Record of the Year. I don't know. That's the name of the song. Um Record of the Year Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and Vocal. So interesting. Another interesting thing that I didn't know, I mean, I've I've kind of ignored these guys for I mean, I heard them on the radio, and it's like, yeah, it's good while you're listening to the radio. And uh they were just sort of in the background at the time for me. But uh last couple weeks digging in, um, it's good. They're I think really talented. They're a family of guys, like it's three brothers and a cousin. Cousin is the guitar player. Um Caleb, the singer. I guess he's got that gritty voice, I would say. And that's that's the that's a bane difference maker with with them. Uh we can get into it later, but um Kings of Leon, the name Leon in the band, that name I think is attributed in some way to their fathers. Like their dad and their grandfather both have, I think, Leon in their first name. So something like that. Anyway, yeah, so there's that. Uh they I think they debuted with an album in 2003. They got super popular in UK first. And then this is the album in 2008 that put them on the map and rocketed them to superstardom. So yeah, so multi, platinum, all that stuff. And then their popularity, I think, spread to all the other countries. So anyway. Um yeah, like like I said, at the end of the show, we're gonna total up the score, give our top three non-hits, and then uh Yeah, we'll uh wrap it up. So far, there's a song called 17. I don't know why. I don't I don't want to listen to that. There's too many songs about 17. I think it's because they're depraved animals. Or maybe they're making these songs for high school kids, and then maybe the other maybe the other angle, but anyway, along with Winger and the Beatles and uh what was the uh Brian Sensor His band, or whatever. So anyway, they all had songs about 17, and there's another 17 on here. Um there's a song called Be Somebody, that's uh it's kind of the dark horse in the race here for me. But uh anyway. Alright. So with that being said, uh James Whitney, how are you doing, bud?

SPEAKER_06

My fingers.

SPEAKER_13

Oh, yeah. The lazy Susan guy. Yeah, the lazy Susan, getting back to that.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_13

Snag your fingers, cooking, uh you know, putting stuff away, cleaning, making fried chicken, trying to clean and put the panko breadcrumbs away. You know, while frying the chicken. While trying to taste the chicken. You know, doing three things at once. Oh yeah, for the lazy got stuck, and it's actually weirdly the angle of it squirted blood into my onto my neck from my finger. Oh gosh. Three three fabulous flyers! We've got three flyers on this album here. Yeah, what are you thinking? Close- I like closer, uh sex on fire, and I think, you know, maybe you somebody could be my hits, but you I I like to agree on sex on fire and what, you said you somebody.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, sex on fire, you somebody, those are out. Okay, just two.

SPEAKER_13

That's fine.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But uh yeah, everything else we'll we'll we'll put into the net. But I mean, I know that you really love closer. And I mean you've kind of let the big the the cat out of the bag. So I think like for you that I think that should be out. Because it of course, you know, no, it never was listed as a single.

SPEAKER_13

I mean, it wasn't listed as a single. It has a lot of plays on Spotify, but that doesn't mean it. I think it should still be out.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, it's out of for out for consideration.

SPEAKER_13

Out of the top. Oh, out of the top. Okay. Out of the out of the hit category. I got it.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

All right. Okay. Alright, so we'll put it into the mix. So that was the first uh song. Any I don't know, let's I don't know if we need to get into it now, or do you any last thoughts? Uh anything that you want to add?

SPEAKER_13

Just you know. Just put aloe on your band-aids. It heals quicker. I don't know what it is, you know. That's a good idea.

SPEAKER_07

Nobody makes me bleed my own blood.

SPEAKER_13

Nobody's on the list, Susan. You're on thin fucking ice, Susan, okay? Yeah, Susan, that's just swear, Susan. You're so frickin' lazy sometimes. Yeah. Just clean the counters, lazy, Susan.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And get out there and be somebody, yeah. Just be somebody, right, Dave.

unknown

Yeah.

Injury Banter And Host Chemistry

SPEAKER_03

It's haunting. Alright, yeah, this is closer. It get gets me right here. It does. And it gets you deep in your throat.

SPEAKER_13

This is about a some kind of love vampire or something. Something like that.

SPEAKER_10

Three, three fabulous flyers up.

SPEAKER_05

Where's the confetti?

SPEAKER_02

Shout out to those who got the smell. Oh my god, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Taking your soul. It's cold has taken ice. So ice. Recording is during that ice sheet. Week. The whole country was just covered in ice.

SPEAKER_10

Where's the balloons? Isn't three the number of the day?

SPEAKER_03

Chill out count. Yeah. Take a backseat. I know. He's trying to make it about himself.

SPEAKER_13

Do it.

SPEAKER_07

McQueen.

SPEAKER_13

This is a weak. Maybe you have some coffee. Coffee's for closes only.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay, sorry. Shout out to uh Brandary Glen Ross band. I had to give up my bath joke.

SPEAKER_04

They made me breastfeed some old man.

SPEAKER_12

Does that mean it's well, it's one louder, isn't it?

SPEAKER_03

That was awesome. Okay, great song. Great look, good drummer. All that. Uh next song is Crawl.

SPEAKER_13

Shout out to the new babies born out there. The shout outs. We gotta crawl, you know. Even adults need to crawl. It's good for your counteracting muscle groups, okay? That's right. You know. You look weird crawling as an adult, but when you get a six pack, you know.

SPEAKER_05

You both my bra. Don't put it on the job. Don't do up all the better crawl.

SPEAKER_04

I need to go.

SPEAKER_13

Very scary. Very scary. It's hard to play. It's good to play this on acoustic, though. Get the little definitely.

SPEAKER_03

Different uh dies.

SPEAKER_05

Nobody crawl.

SPEAKER_09

One groovy baby.

SPEAKER_13

Crucified US A. That sort of thing is my bag. Yeah. We are here.

SPEAKER_00

Work it, work it, baby, work it's a crawl is rocket.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So the thing is my bag. The song is my bag.

SPEAKER_13

Red, white, and blue red white. I'll talk about politics. I don't know his politics, but. That's Chappelle, right? Uh but I do know his behavior. I know his behavior.

SPEAKER_03

No play, let's pick up the baby girl.

SPEAKER_13

Men hesitate.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_09

The one groovy baby. This is like peasant wife. Very big.

SPEAKER_03

Cousin. Put down an okay solo, I mean.

SPEAKER_00

Work it, own it.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, you can handle this. First is here somewhere.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, little pretty woman. Yeah. We're already hand sex on fire. Alright. We all know this one. Excluded.

SPEAKER_02

Excuse me everyone. Sex! Now that I have your attention. There we go.

Deep Listen: Crawl

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_13

Oh Steven. Oh Steel.

SPEAKER_11

SPEAKER_03

It's uh Steven talking.

SPEAKER_13

It's a good drive it's off. Open roads. Oh no.

SPEAKER_05

Rattle of bowls I could just taste it.

SPEAKER_13

Taste it?

SPEAKER_05

Chaste it.

SPEAKER_13

I am fire.

SPEAKER_07

I am fire.

SPEAKER_13

Always do the greatest. You are fire. Listeners, okay? Regardless of how much sex you're having, you're already a star on fire, okay? Even if you're doing nothing today. You're listening to us? That's right.

SPEAKER_03

You're fire. You're fi You are fire. You are fire. Shout out to those runners out there. Just remember you're fired. You're fire. Tire the tire. Keep going. Shout out to the unemployed, you're fire. Shout out to the employed, you're probably gonna get fired. Get the water pail out.

SPEAKER_13

We'll be alright. Pick up the guitar. Lock yourself in the basement. Pound of marijuana. Apparently that's the bandit. To learn to learn the song. Oh yeah, was that even grabbing some knowledge there?

SPEAKER_03

Is that what they did? Just a bag of weed and that was it.

SPEAKER_01

Sort of thing is my bag. That is the bag. Sort of thing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, this is the big one. Small thumbs, yeah. This is the second. Sex on fire was first.

SPEAKER_13

Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I've been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see. Pain the faces do the faces I can reach.

SPEAKER_03

Cousin Matthew I give you somebody.

SPEAKER_05

You know that I kill you somebody. Someone like you.

SPEAKER_03

Production's pretty good too. Angelo Petralia. Shout out to the producer. Big influence there.

SPEAKER_05

You know that I guess you somebody.

SPEAKER_03

The second cousin. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

You know that I'm somebody.

SPEAKER_13

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

Someone like you.

The Big Singles: Sex On Fire And Use Somebody

SPEAKER_03

So we're like an interesting story, backstory of this song. Oh yeah, I'm looking at that marijuana thing. He spent a month down there. So Matthew was uh in his hometown in Mississippi enjoying the band.

SPEAKER_02

Never allowed him to be too complicated. I gotta do it.

SPEAKER_11

You said someone's talking some reefer. Nah, I said someone's on some pie.

SPEAKER_13

Caleb. What are you boys doing down there? What are you boys doing down there?

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so sign This is where the Wikipedia by 2002 made it Nathan Kalen that we seemed interesting. Remember music players signed parts. Yeah, they are kind of influenced a little bit by like Finn Lizzie, Rolling Stones, Clash. Angelo Petralia helped at home their songwriting skills.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, I hear Pixies for sure. Yeah, Pixie's Velvet I'm here. But they've got this sort of soulful aspect because of Kalan's voice. Oh yeah. It's sort of this. It ropes it back into this.

SPEAKER_03

It's kind of like mellow and drawn out, where the music is like very staccato and fast-paced. Yeah. So I like that. Dichotomy. This is Manhat.

SPEAKER_05

I like to dance out there.

SPEAKER_03

You gotta pay attention here.

SPEAKER_05

Song's a day. That's hot there. No matter who you are. So we dance all day.

SPEAKER_08

So what? So let's dance. I don't know if I can dance all day.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, just sing this. Just like Bob and then she returned to me.

SPEAKER_13

Got two left feet here.

SPEAKER_05

We're gonna build a bad stoke up.

SPEAKER_07

Token. You said someone's tokens.

SPEAKER_05

We're gonna show this town how to give these tasks.

SPEAKER_04

You said some really sick stuff.

SPEAKER_05

I'm on the phone to kill, most can I, a yellow ass dream, and away I ride. I never dropped this bill, I'll never follow ground.

unknown

So for you, for what you found.

SPEAKER_03

What do you think it's so far?

SPEAKER_13

I like Manhattan. It's tolerable.

SPEAKER_05

It's gonna take off it.

SPEAKER_11

It's tolerable.

Influences, Production, And Songcraft

SPEAKER_13

It's gonna be I would like them to string out, sort of part parcel their songs a little bit more and like highlight some of the artists, like highlight a little drum and bass there, you know, and and sort of like I mean, I know that would make it a little more jazzy, but I'm gonna go.

SPEAKER_05

Even though it was me who drove in the ground. Am I driving okay? All the while I was dreaming for me.

SPEAKER_03

The chaos, yeah, the heaviness of crawl.

SPEAKER_13

I hear a little like my morning jacket Wilko here.

SPEAKER_05

With the wind on my back, I'm he'll be even better than I just know it was you all along who had a hole in my heart. But the demon and me were the best of friends from the start. So the time we shared it was pressed to me. All the while I was dreaming.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like his voice, the sparse uh playing of the guitar. And the toe monster You know it cuts across the drums. Drums are random. It's like a lead back to the easy song.

SPEAKER_05

I like how like the dog with the drums in the background.

SPEAKER_13

Only a family knows how to jam like this. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Pet soundsy. Beach boys.

SPEAKER_01

Simple lines intertwined.

Deep Listen: Manhattan

SPEAKER_03

All right, this is seventeen. Time to get Karee Play. Yeah, perfect timing.

SPEAKER_11

But if you don't change your face, I'm gonna change it for you.

SPEAKER_05

What is this shit? A bold wooden shake of our time and the ticket I lay out that made me feel so strange. So I could call you baby, I could call you down and so on in the new year. Oh, she's only seven Oh wooden shit.

SPEAKER_08

So what? So let's say the fucking number.

SPEAKER_03

I think Tim was telling me earlier that he was gonna put this in. He's like grievous. It's not bad, it's tolerable.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, it is, it's tolerable.

SPEAKER_05

It's a tick of all time and the tick in the hell that made me feel so strange. He said I could call you baby, I could call you damn it. It's a one in the video. Maybe baby, maybe baby, maybe the road is fancy town that made me want to stay.

SPEAKER_02

I think Brits really dig that. Yeah, I can see how they're they're popular in Britain. Bells, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

You wanted it more than I did.

SPEAKER_13

Bend off the serpents. Let's go. That's right.

SPEAKER_03

Shout out to Stacy from Fast Times Original. Tim says sub. Sub.

SPEAKER_13

ASL. That's right.

SPEAKER_03

So all right, Notion. Okay, this is Notion. We've all heard this one, eh? Don't like it, don't knock it.

SPEAKER_05

I got a notion to say what doesn't feel right.

SPEAKER_13

Right.

SPEAKER_05

So don't knock it, don't like it, been here before. So don't knock it, don't knock it before.

SPEAKER_03

I think we forget to erase that. Very that's the less bad recording of that.

SPEAKER_13

Knock knock. Who's there? You're there. I thought the fucking thing.

SPEAKER_05

Everyone says don't. Who said it?

SPEAKER_12

Talk amongst yourselves. You love a club.

SPEAKER_03

Wow. Call the fire department. Call the fire department. I'll give you a topic. Notion. It's uh not either a hit nor a non-hit disgust. A notion. Sort of like a it's a tweener.

SPEAKER_13

It's intuition, a thought, uh something for nothing. Must have a notion before a knowledge.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like a punch. Intuition.

SPEAKER_01

Up the backside. Knock your dead, rock your socks off.

SPEAKER_13

Been here before.

SPEAKER_01

Simple lines intertwining.

SPEAKER_03

Oh very good. Yeah, notion was a bad song for me though.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah. Look at that. Alright. So pity. It's rock and roll. Alright, this is our wine. Downers. Uppers, downers. Salmon's got everything. In between.

SPEAKER_05

Give it back on track. Pick me up some bottles of glue. Bobby thinks he's cooler than you.

SPEAKER_13

What are you new?

SPEAKER_05

A hayride, up by everybody's coming around.

SPEAKER_03

A hayride. Sounds like a sounds like a big deal.

SPEAKER_13

Who's putting the skirt on?

SPEAKER_03

This is in 2008. That was before. Alright. Yeah. The whole spectrum.

SPEAKER_05

I call Shacon. You can play our R and Beach too. The fellowship time. It always comes a little too simple. The land of the creeps.

SPEAKER_13

Fresh and Time to get careful.

SPEAKER_05

Put your eyes on me, and I know what better we can get with. Just say I want you. Just act like I used to. Cause baby is on. Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby. Be bringing me down.

SPEAKER_12

Could have used a little more cowbell.

SPEAKER_03

I do like the cowbell.

SPEAKER_00

Work it, work it, baby.

SPEAKER_08

So what?

SPEAKER_05

So let's dance. Homeboy so proud. He finally got the video through. The night vision shows she was only duck in the true.

SPEAKER_03

Devon list is the EP. Do that later. The original.

SPEAKER_05

It's happy, I know. The blackout with the gift down below. A choke out, again. She spit up and came back for more. Exactly like I used to. And babies is off on me down. Downers that I won't do.

SPEAKER_13

Shout out to the video cameras out there.

SPEAKER_03

Shout out to the uh the night vision showers.

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_03

Choking gag, she spit up and came back for four. There's no Sisley. Can't tell me who I like the song of that. Oh babies up. RIP Stevie Hawkins. I hope you're not in the FC class. Sure he is. Yeah.

SPEAKER_13

So it's just somebody check his work. He's full of shit.

SPEAKER_03

I wonder what his top three would be. I don't know, maybe 17. 17 to the top three.

Deep Listen: Notion

SPEAKER_13

He's using the episode. Oh, it's just that song.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah. You're like, my top three is seventeen. Okay. Okay, this is be somebody.

SPEAKER_06

Get out there and be somebody.

SPEAKER_12

There you go.

SPEAKER_05

Taking to the floor with the reach to the sky. I lose a matta.

SPEAKER_01

Good drama, great look. Good drama. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Locking down the door with the rhythm and run. I lose a mat. I lose a mat Trying to recall what you want me to say. I shake you all with. I shake it all way. Come on on a night for a beautiful day. I shake it your way. I shake it your way and I say you can't get up.

SPEAKER_13

Okay, Caleb Now you can't get up.

SPEAKER_03

They like Matt believe in the songs.

SPEAKER_05

You still want them to be raw guy here.

SPEAKER_13

This is Rod up here. Yeah. It's a bad thing It's good, I like it. Oh, yeah. Now it's got that YouTube vibe. Yes. I hear Monica Lewinsky's a huge YouTube fan.

SPEAKER_03

It's like I just can't get enough. Just enough. Now you can't get enough.

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Ripping off uh catching mode a little bit.

SPEAKER_13

I'm getting a little bit clapped.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the big good bass group. I uh Jared. Brother Jared on the bass. Cousin Matthew on the guitar. Cousin Nathan on the drums. Oh man, they're all tripping.

SPEAKER_06

Get up there and be somebody.

SPEAKER_04

Isn't anybody fucking knocking anymore?

SPEAKER_01

Up the backside.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's sacrilege that we haven't changed this one yet.

SPEAKER_08

Oh wait just a minute!

SPEAKER_03

That had nothing to do with. But if you don't change your face, I'm gonna change it for you. Alright. Yeah, we almost went a whole episode without doing just a minute. So anyway. This is the last one, I think.

Deep Listen: Revelry

SPEAKER_13

Alright. The end of that was pretty good. I'm not gonna lie.

SPEAKER_03

That was That was good. There's cold desert. Not to be confused with cold dessert.

SPEAKER_13

Oh banana pudding.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, this is the banana pudding song. It's at the end of the meal. This is good. Cherry on top. The banana with the cherry. Great, great combo. Great look, good dessert. It's very dreamy.

unknown

I'm on a corner. When I for like common.

SPEAKER_03

It's very country, I like it.

SPEAKER_05

That's when I know that you're alone. Cold in the desert. Water there season round.

SPEAKER_00

Special and spoken to sound anyhow, you think that I'm gonna sit around and wait for you and forget it.

SPEAKER_05

So be lovely. Am I crying? No, I'm not crying. And no, let's go home. Oh gosh. I'm just everyone.

SPEAKER_03

I'm weeping.

SPEAKER_13

Weeping like a well owl.

SPEAKER_03

Sure, this is a get out your lighter, get out your phone mode. This is a crowd pleasure.

SPEAKER_05

I win all feeling that I've always been scared of the sound. Jesus don't love me. No one in the club.

SPEAKER_03

I didn't know a closer is often used as an opener.

SPEAKER_04

I'm doing step.

SPEAKER_13

So they've been starting off as their new one to space. Manhattan revelry in there in the middle. Right. Somebody, yeah. Yeah. Don't play the same show over and over again, which is good. Yeah, exactly. Keeps the audience guessing.

SPEAKER_03

I like the cold desert. That's uh nice way to round it off. So what are you thinking? Are you uh you ready to look at the list?

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, let's look at it.

SPEAKER_03

What are you what are you thinking?

SPEAKER_13

Siren, I like the siren.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean I had to go. The thing is that everybody loves that song. I do too. It's almost kind of like uh it's on a it's on a on the borderline, but I wanted to give uh I wanna give the oxygen to be somebody number one. I just think that would be kind of a really cool song to see. Nobody never won. Somebody be somebody somebody.
