An abandoned Arctic coal town becomes a drum kit, a choir of wind, and a piano echoing in an empty building. Alright, thank you for listening to the greatest non-hits. I'm Chris, and playing a little ditty from the song Sedna. From After Clang's Pyramida is my co-host Tim. Thanks again for listening, folks. Uh we haven't done one of these in a while, so uh we're feeling fresh, and we're really into the this album that we're gonna do, After Klang. Danish uh band performed in Copenhagen a while back. This album is from 2011, I think August of 2011. And like we do with all the other albums, we're gonna listen to all the songs, we're gonna cut up the uh we're gonna cut uh we're gonna cut up the songs, maybe rag on them a little bit, but love on them mostly, as we always do, and then at the end we're gonna rank the top three songs that we you know that are non-hits that are that we like the best. So I don't even know if there are any hits on this. I think I I know they're they're big in Europe, you know, we're a couple of American guys, and so uh Tim's more familiar with this band than I am. Uh you know, his sister lived in Norway for a while, kind of brought it back, and he dug deeper, he digs it. It's a very ethereal kind of a sound. Uh interesting backstory with this album because you know, like when you think of the the standard 70s rock bands, yeah, you picture a lead singer, a guitarist, a tour, uh you know, that that whole thing. You know, you've got that. You know, but this you know, this band is just you know, there's something else. I mean you know I would say you know, when you've got you know, instruments, you got a band, you know, y the traditional way that you you cut up an album you know, these guys, you know, don't use the instruments on this.

Who Afterklang Are

Like the the band was formed back in tw December of 2000. It was Kasper Clausen, Mads Brouwer, Rasmus Stolberg. And the group's very name translates to reverberation or remembrance in Danish. So that's the meaning of the term afterclang. So for over two decades, uh they pushed the boundaries of indie pop, electronic ambient soundscapes, chamber rock. But like to really truly understand what makes them extraordinary, you have to look at how they approach sound not just as a music, but as a physical space waiting to be filled or explored.

Turning Pyramiden Into Instruments

So in twenty eleven, you know, the band set out on an extraordinary sonic expedition. They traveled deep into the high Arctic to Svalbard, Norway, specifically to uh an abandoned Soviet coal mining settlement called Pyramiden. That's where they get the you know, the the album Pyramida. But Pyramiden, the settlement, was built in nineteen ten and later brought by the Soviet Union, you know, serving as a like a busting idealist mining outpost until it was abruptly abandoned in nineteen ninety-eight. So left behind was uh a literal literal ghost town frozen in the Arctic, you know, complete with empty apartment blocks, community centers. There was like a grand piano left in a culture house, and then massive industrial machinery that was just rusting away. So Efter Klang spent nine days in this desolate landscape, but they didn't bring traditional recording setups. They they brought like field recorders like to capture the ghost town's voice. So they they treated they treated it like a a giant musical instrument, in other words. They they tapped on massive metal fuel tanks, uh rec they recorded like the wind whipping through broken window panes, uh they struck rusty iron pipes, you know, sampled the delicate clicks of ceramic tiles in abandoned communal kitchens. Uh you know, they even found the world's northernmost grand piano that was just like left decaying in the Arctic. So after playing it, it just I guess it kind of captured the eerie resonance of uh of all of it. So when when they left to return to their studio in Denmark, they they took over a thousand field recordings and transformed them into software instruments. So they they just they they tuned they turned the uh the rhythmic the rhythmic clang of a fuel tank into a kick drum. So really cool stuff. Um so the result was this album. So there's a few tracks like Howell Mountain and Apples that are really, I mean in my opinion, really very artfully arranged pop songs. Um what makes the album so fascinating is that it it doesn't sound cold or creepy, it actually sounds like warm, humid, it has a like a very emotional kind of a a vibe to all of it. So I'm looking forward to it, man. This is gonna be uh it's gonna be a good one for sure. So anyway, um Yeah, Tim is uh Yeah Tim's gonna get better and better all the time. I know I say that, but it's the truth, man. You you hit it. You were playing with uh more feeling too. I can you could kind of hear like the it's like this.

Calm Listening And Headspace Music

I've been I've been well, doing well getting back in the saddle here. This is an album that really piques the mysterious wonder that that life entails. You know, life may scoop another scoop for you when you're not ready, it may beat you down, it may send you to a faraway wicked detour. Uh but you have to just tap into that universal truth, forge your soul, stand upon and up beyond your legacy, you know. Keep climbing, realizing that you may not reach the top anytime soon. That's where this album takes you. And I think sometimes in society we're always constantly in a fight or flight sort of scenario with our nervous system and always on the edge. And uh if you let these masterpieces just really capture you here the essence of it. The humans and nature, you know. Uh I think you'll kind of get out of that fight or flight predicament and just be in be in the now, you know.

Well, we want this to be uh no anxiety, you know stress kind of a podcast, but you know, especially this is the kind of now that we're super chill and uh really, really interesting, in my opinion. So kudos for you uh bringing it to our attention. Yes.
