"I Want To Know Why?!" w/ Charles Woodley | Growing up on Statia, Entrepreneurship & Leadership

In this episode, we sit down with Charles Woodley, known for his culinary talent and outspoken love for Statia.
Charles reflected on growing up in one of the island’s largest families. He shared stories of childhood: chasing goats, hiking the Quill in search of cows, and living in a time when Statia felt like one big community. Everyone had a role, and the island moved as one. His love for cooking started beside his mother in the kitchen, learning by watching, not from recipes.
Charles was always curious, the kind of child who asked questions when others stayed quiet. That mindset stayed with him through different roles, from construction work to his career as an entrepreneur. He spoke about the importance of staying humble and saw every experience as a stepping stone, even the ones that didn’t seem to matter at the time.
He also shared his role in the All for 1 Union, where he’s been a steady voice for fair treatment of Statian workers. Advocacy, fairness, and looking out for the community are part of who he is. The conversation naturally touched on leadership, responsibility, and the future of Statia, themes that matter to anyone who calls the island home. Charles believes in leading by example through listening, learning, and lifting others.
Charles expressed that Sometimes the most powerful change begins with a simple question: “I want you to tell me why.”
His story reminds us that we all have a part to play in shaping the Statia we believe in.
