Winter 2022-23: more people than ever are finding themselves struggling to make ends meet in the current cost of living crisis.
Organisations such as parish and borough councils and charities including Citizens Advice are working hard to signpost individuals and families to the support available, from financial grants to food banks and the provision of clothing and other essentials. There is also a network of 'warm spaces' running open sessions to enable people to access support and get warm if they are minimising the use of their heating at home due to energy costs.
The RG10 Podcast caught up with Citizens Advice Wokingham during one of their Mobile Advice Unit visits to Twyford. This one at Waitrose on 14 January was a joint event with Twyford Parish Council focusing on cost of living support. Councillors were also available to chat to local residents and raise awareness of local initiatives such as the Warm Spaces available at the library and the youth centre.
In this episode, we hear from David Warby, the Mobile Advice Unit lead for Citizens Advice Wokingham, and also the Chief Executive, Jake Morrison, about the type of support available and the sharp rise in enquiries being experienced.
Citizens Advice Wokingham offer a One Front Door service which aims to remove the need for residents to have to figure out what support they may be eligible for and make multiple applications to different entities. Anyone can get in touch: advisers listen to their concerns and then decide which initiatives match their needs and who pays for what. In this way, support is drawn from different entities including the government's Household Support Fund, members of Wokingham United Charities or The Polehampton Charity in Twyford, Ruscombe and Charvil.
