Tired of Pretending?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Are you tired of pretending everything is fine when it isn't?
In this episode of the Intentional Grounding Godcast, we dive into Ephesians 4:25 and uncover one of the most exhausting habits many Christians struggle with: pretense. Whether it's pretending you're stronger than you are, happier than you feel, or less burdened than you actually are, living behind a mask can leave you spiritually drained and emotionally isolated.
God never called us to perform our faith. He called us to live it. Together we'll explore why honesty is essential to healing, how authenticity strengthens our relationship with God and others, and why freedom begins when we stop managing appearances and start embracing truth. If you've been carrying the weight of pretending, this message may be exactly what you need today.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to stay grounded.
Take what you heard today with you not as something to rush through, but as something to sit with.
Slow your breathing. Steady your heart. And remember… God is already at work, even in the quiet.
Thank you for spending this time with me. Thank you for choosing stillness over striving. Thank you for showing up—right where you are.
Thank you for joining me on the Intentional Grounding Godcast. Stay grounded, stay faithful, and remember—you’re never walking alone.
Until next time…
I’ll be prayin’ for ya.
Have you ever felt like you're living behind a mask? Like maybe everyone around you thinks you're doing fine, but deep down you're struggling. Like maybe you've become so accustomed to pretending that even you aren't sure where the mask ends and the real you begins. Well, today we're going to unpack Ephesians 4 25 and discover why God calls believers to put away the falsehood and embrace the truth. Pretense, it may protect your image for a moment, but authenticity is what builds trust and healing and real relationships with God and others. And if you're tired of pretending that you're okay when you're not, then this episode is for you. I mean, think about this. How much energy are you spending trying to convince everyone that you're someone you're not? What if the very thing that is draining you isn't your circumstances? What if it's the mask? Welcome into the Intentional Grounding Godcast Letters to Isaiah. I'm your faith strategist, Coach Dombrowski, and I'm here to help you live out your walk, not just believe it. So, y'all, the Apostle Paul is writing to the believers in Ephesians, right? He's describing what it looks like to put off the old life and put on the new life found in Christ. And one of the very first things he addresses is honesty. Not because God wants a perfection, but because he wants authenticity. All right. The church in Ephesians, it was made up of people from a ton of different backgrounds, right? Some had lived lives centered around images and status, deception and self-preservation. Now, Paul reminds them that following Jesus means becoming different. It means living truthfully, not selectively truthful or partially truthful, but truthful. All right. And it says, therefore, each of you must put off a falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Okay. So the first point I need to make here, and you all agree with me, I'm sure, pretense is exhausting. Okay. Pretending it requires constant maintenance. You have to remember what version of yourself you showed to different people. You have to keep up the appearances, you have to hide weaknesses, you have to conceal struggles, right? And eventually the performance becomes exhausting. Well, God never called you to perform Christianity, He called you to follow Christ. And there is a difference. One is acting and the other one is surrendering. A second point I want to make pretense, it blocks healing. You cannot heal what you refuse to acknowledge. I mean, many people pray for freedom and they're hiding the very thing that they need freedom from. Right? The enemy loves secrecy. God works through honesty, not because he doesn't know already, right? But because confession opens a door for transformation. When we stop pretending, we finally allow God access to the places that we've been protecting. Now, point number three, pretense damages relationships. Man, Paul says we are members of one body. Truth is built on trust. Trust is built on truth. Relationships, they thrive on honesty, right? That moment that we start presenting false versions of ourselves, we force people to connect with the mask instead of the person. Now, God designed community around truth, like real friendships, real accountability, real encouragement, real growth. Okay, the truth, truth leads to freedom, right? Jesus never said the truth would make you uncomfortable or comfortable. He said it would make you free, right? Freedom begins when we stop managing the appearance and start pursuing authenticity. I mean, the strongest believer in the room isn't always the loudest. A lot of times it's the one who can honestly say, I need God every single day. I mean, ask yourself like, where are you pretending? You know, where are you hiding? Where am I more convinced or concerned with appearances than authenticity? You know, what conversations do I need to have honestly? You know, maybe write down one area of your life where you've been wearing a mask and then ask God to help you remove it. I'll bet you're tired, right? Not because of the work or the finances or the relationships, but because, man, you're carrying the weight of an image. You're trying to be strong, you're trying to be perfect, trying to have all the answers, and it's wearing you out. God isn't asking you to impress him, he's asking you to trust him. Right? Stop asking how you look. Start asking, Am I being honest? Right? Because authenticity before God is always going to matter more than the appearances before people. All right. You have to be able to admit where you're pretending. You can't change what you won't identify. Bring it before God. Nothing surprises him. Share, share with the trusted believer. You know, truth grows stronger in community. And 100% choose authenticity daily, not just once, but every day. You know, if while you continue choosing the truth over pretending, man, you're going to spend less time performing, less time hiding, less time managing appearances, and more time walking in the freedom that Christ died to give you. You know, tomorrow when somebody asks you how you're doing, be honest. Not dramatic, just honest, you know. Don't not attention seeking. You know what I'm saying? The habit of authenticity, it starts with those little moments of truth. Okay. A lot of people, they they don't wear masks because they're evil. They wear masks because they're afraid, right? Rejection, judgment. Afraid people that, you know, they won't accept the real version of them. I mean, Jesus consistently moved towards imperfect people, right? The broken, the doubting, the struggling, the ashamed, the people who stopped pretending. The gospel isn't an invitation to become impressive, it's an invitation to become transformed. And transformation starts where pretending ends. All right. I mean, the life God blesses isn't the one that looks perfect, it's the one that stays honest before Him. Now, to my grandson Isaiah, I'm gonna keep this short and sweet, buddy. One day you're gonna discover that people can spend a lifetime trying to be what everyone else wants them to be. Do not fall into that trap. Need you to be truthful and authentic, be the man that God created you to be. The people who truly love you, they're not gonna need a performance, they need you. That's powerful, buddy. I love you, man. So guys, imagine this. Imagine carrying this backpack full of bricks everywhere that you go. And at first you think like it's it's helping protect you. And eventually you realize, man, this backpack, these bricks, man, they're slowing me down, right? Pretense, pretending. It works the same way, but the mask, it may feel safe for a season, but eventually it's gonna become a burden. So today, maybe just take one break out of the backpack, but choose honesty, choose authenticity, choose freedom. I'd love to hear from you. Send me some fan mail, guys. What hit you most today? Have you ever found yourself pretending to be okay when you weren't? Drop a comment. Let me know. I'd love to be able to encourage you and you to encourage somebody else. So if this message helped you, please share it with somebody who might be carrying the weight of a mask today. Keep leading in, keep growing, keep grounding yourself in God's truth. All right. Thank you so much for listening. I appreciate you being here today and spending your time with me. Guys, until next time, Coach Dombrowski out. I'll be praying for you.
