Why You're Working Harder Than God Intended
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Are you exhausted from constantly pushing harder, trying more, and carrying the weight of every problem on your own shoulders?
Ecclesiastes 10:10 delivers a powerful truth that many Christians overlook: "If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success." Sometimes the answer isn't more effort—it's more wisdom.
In this episode of the Intentional Grounding Godcast – Letters to Isaiah, we explore how God often calls us to stop swinging a dull axe and start sharpening it. We'll uncover why preparation matters, how wisdom multiplies our effectiveness, and what it looks like to work with God's guidance instead of relying solely on our own strength.
If you've been feeling frustrated, stuck, overwhelmed, or wondering why your hard work isn't producing the results you expected, this message will challenge your perspective and encourage you to seek God's wisdom before simply working harder.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to stay grounded.
Take what you heard today with you not as something to rush through, but as something to sit with.
Slow your breathing. Steady your heart. And remember… God is already at work, even in the quiet.
Thank you for spending this time with me. Thank you for choosing stillness over striving. Thank you for showing up—right where you are.
Thank you for joining me on the Intentional Grounding Godcast. Stay grounded, stay faithful, and remember—you’re never walking alone.
Until next time…
I’ll be prayin’ for ya.
Have you ever noticed that some people seem to accomplish more with less effort? Meanwhile, others are exhausted, they're overwhelmed, and they're constantly swinging harder and harder and harder at the same problems. What if the issue isn't your effort? What if the issue is your axe? Well, today we're going to discover why God sometimes calls us to stop swinging, start sharpening, and embrace wisdom before effort, because there is a difference between being busy and being effective. Welcome to the Intentional Grounding Godcast Letters to Isaiah. I'm your faith strategist, Coach Dombrowski, and I'm here to help you live by your walk, not just believe it. Well, our focused verse today, it's going to come from one of the wisest men who ever lived, King Solomon. And in the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon spends a lot of his time examining life under the sun and teaches us how wisdom changes everything. So listen closely to what he says. Now, before let me set the scene for you, Solomon here is using a simple illustration that every listener in his day would have understood. Woodcutting, it was hard labor, right? A dull act, it didn't make the job impossible. It simply made the job harder. Like the worker could keep swinging all day long, but the lack of preparation is going to cost him energy, time, and results. That's the image that Solomon uses to teach a spiritual truth. Now, Ecclesiastes 10, verse 10 says, if the axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed. But skill will bring success. Now, point number one, effort alone is not enough. And one of the biggest myths that people believe is that success comes only from working harder. Scripture never teaches that. The Bible praises diligence, right? But it also praises wisdom. A dull axe still cuts, it just cuts inefficiently, right? And a lot of believers they become frustrated because they keep applying more effort to a problem that requires greater wisdom. Sometimes we're we're praying harder for, or when God wants us to listen more carefully, right? Or sometimes we're working harder when God wants us to learn a new skill. Or maybe we're forcing a door open when God wants us to walk through a different one, right? More effort isn't always the answer. Sometimes better wisdom is, right? You have to remember sharpening takes time. You know, nobody likes that sharpening process. We like swinging, we like action, we like the movement. You know, sharpening, it feels slow. It's it's preparation, right? It's learning, it's training, it's in the waiting. And at the same time, sharpening is what makes the work effective, right? God uses seasons of preparation before seasons of impact. Go back to David. We talked about it yesterday. He spent years tending the sheep before he became a king. Moses spent decades in the wilderness before leading Israel. Right? Jesus spent years preparing before beginning his public ministry. The world, see, we the world celebrates action and God celebrates preparation. Okay. Wisdom, friends, is God's multiplier, right? Notice Solomon, he doesn't say that skill replaces work. He says skill brings success, right? The work, uh, the worker still swings the axe. The difference is that wisdom multiplies the effectiveness of every swing. And the same is true spiritually. God's wisdom, it helps us unavoid unnecessary battles, right? It helps us recognize opportunities. It actually helps us steward our time. So not only that, but it helps us strengthen relationships and it helps us discern his direction. You know, wisdom is God's way of multiplying what he's already placed in your hands. You know, I mean, ask yourself, where are you working harder instead of wiser? You know, are you constantly exhausted because you haven't taken time to sharpen your spiritual life? Did you stop learning? Did you stop growing? Stop seeking God's wisdom? Right? The the answer may not be more effort. The answer might be more preparation. You know? Anyone out there today frustrated? Like you're doing everything you know how to do, you're working hard, you're you're trying to be faithful, and at the same time, it feels like nothing is changing. Well, before you start swinging harder, ask God if he's calling you to sharpen the ax. Right? A few moments of wisdom can save you years of unnecessary struggle, right? You don't just need to work harder. You know, start saying, Lord, show me how to work wisely, because the wisdom doesn't replace effort, wisdom directs effort. Okay, and you you know, in order for this to to work and and for you to make the change, you have to spend time in God's word every day. Wisdom begins with knowing God's truth, right? And and ask God for wisdom specifically. You know, James tells us God gives wisdom generously. So be specific, right? And learn before you leap, right? Seek out some counsel, you know, talk, do some training, get a good grasp, some solid understanding, you know, and then evaluate what's not working. Sometimes the dull acts is maybe it's an old habit or an old mindset or an old way you used to approach things, you know, you have to trust God's preparation process. The sharpening, it may feel slow, but it prepares you for greater effectiveness. You know, and if you keep seeking God's wisdom, you'll begin noticing that the same situations that once drained you are not going to control you. The same challenges that overwhelmed you, they won't intimidate you. You know, you stop relying solely on strength and start relying on God's direction. And when wisdom guides your steps, your effort becomes far more effective. All right. So before rushing into your day, pause for five minutes and ask one question: Lord, where do I need wisdom today? And I think that one prayer could change the way you approach every single challenge in front of you. You know? I mean, look at where we're at today, family. Like the culture we live in, it celebrates the hustle. Work longer, sleep less, push harder, keep grinding, right? But Solomon offers a different perspective. A man with a sharp ax may accomplish more in two hours than another man accomplishes in ten. The difference isn't commitment, the difference is the preparation. Spiritually, a lot of people are exhausted because they're carrying burdens that God never asked them to carry. They're fighting battles God never asked them to fight. They're trying to produce outcomes that only God can produce. God never intended for his people to live solely by effort. He intended us to live by wisdom, empowered by his spirit. The sharper your relationship with God becomes, do you see the more clearly you'll recognize his direction? And a lot of times, his direction, it saves you from unnecessary struggle. Right? That dull axe, it creates exhaustion. A sharpened axe creates effectiveness. God's wisdom is the sharpening stone for your life. To my grandson Isaiah, one day you're going to discover that working harder isn't always the answer. Sometimes the strongest thing that you can do is slow down long enough to learn, listen, and grow. Never, ever be afraid of preparation seasons. God does his deepest work in those moments. I'm living proof. Keep seeking his wisdom, keep trusting his timing, and keep sharpening the gifts that he's given you. Olivia. Listen, I want you to picture this real quick before we before we move on here. Imagine two men chopping at the same tree. One is swinging a doll axe all day long, the other stops, sharpens blade, and finishes the time in half the time that it took. This is what I'm getting at. Today, God may be calling you to sharpen your axe. Seek his wisdom, trust his preparation. Honestly, watch how he multiplies your effectiveness. Think about an area of your life that needs sharpening right now. All right.
