When It's Time To Leave Home

What if the hardest part about your next season isn't leaving home? What if it's taking the first step? In just a few weeks, thousands of students will be packing their cars, hug their parents goodbye, and drive toward a future they've never lived before. Some are excited. Others are terrified, and many are standing spiritually where Jacob's sons were, looking at each other, waiting for someone else to move first. Welcome to the Intentional Grounding Godcast Letters to Isaiah. I'm your faith strategist, coach Dombrowski, and I'm here to help you live out your walk, not just believe it. And today we're talking about fear, transition, and trusting God when life pushes you into a brand new chapter. Whether you're heading off to college, starting your first job, entering the military, or simply facing a season you've never walked before, God already knows the road ahead. And at first glance, the scripture we're going to look into in Genesis 4, 21 almost sounds a little humorous. Jacob walks into the room. His grown sons are standing around, doing absolutely nothing. And Jacob basically says, Why are all of you just standing there? But underneath that question is a lesson that every believer eventually has to learn. Let me set the scene for you. A severe famine has covered the land. Joseph, the brother, his family believes is dead, is now governing Egypt, and they have no idea. God has already been working behind the scenes for years. His plan is ready, the provision is ready. But Jacob's sons haven't moved yet. They're frozen. Sometimes fear doesn't look dramatic. Sometimes it just looks like standing still. So the scripture today, Genesis 42, verse 1, says, When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, Why do you just keep looking at each other? That phrase, looking at each other, paints the picture of hesitation, waiting, indecision. Everyone hoping someone else is going to make the first move. You know, the famine, it affected the entire region. Okay. Traveling to Egypt, it wasn't convenient, it was dangerous, in fact, expensive and unknown. But Egypt represented life because God had already positioned Joseph there years earlier. What looked like coincidence was actually divine preparation. Now, Moses wrote Genesis to remind Israel that God is always working long before his people recognize it. Even painful chapters are preparing future blessings. Now, I think what this reveals about God is that God was preparing provision before he sent his people. Right? He rarely explains everything beforehand. But at the same time, he's already, you know, waiting where he's calling you. Right? It doesn't, this verse actually doesn't teach reckless decision making, it teaches faithful movement after God opens a door. Right? Faith isn't impulsive, faith obeys. So if you're getting ready to leave home, can I tell you something? Your parents probably aren't the only ones nervous. You probably are too. New roommates, new professors, new city, new church, new friends, new temptations, new freedoms. For the first time, mom's not going to be there to remind you to get up. Dad's not going to ask where you're going. Nobody is making sure you're reading your Bible. No one's checking whether you went to church. Your faith becomes your faith. And that's exactly why this season matters. And I want you to notice something here. Jacob didn't tell his sons, sit here until you feel ready. He challenged them to move. Because sometimes confidence comes after obedience, not before it. And some of you listening have spent weeks wondering, man, what if I fail? What if nobody likes me? What if I pick the wrong major? What if I miss home? What if I don't fit in? Let me ask you another question. What if God is already waiting for you there? Just like Joseph was already in Egypt, God is already on your campus. He's in your dorm, in your barracks, in your classroom, already preparing friendships, opening conversations, already protecting you from things you'll never even know about. You're not walking into unknown territory. You're walking into territory where God arrived before you. Two, pack your Bible before you pack your gaming council. Three, pray before every major decision that you make. Four, find Christian friends before the wrong crowd finds you. Life doesn't usually destroy someone's faith overnight, guys. It happens one compromise at a time, one missed Sunday, one unchecked relationship, one negative or neglected prayer at a time. So stay grounded. Parents, this message is for you too. One of the hardest things you'll ever do is watch your child drive away. Man, that's tough. You're gonna wonder if you taught enough, if you prayed enough, and if you prepared enough. Jesus already is. Okay. So this week, I want you to spend five minutes every morning asking God one simple question, Lord, who do you want me to become in this next season? Not what major should I pick? Not will everybody like me, but who are you shaping me into? Because that's the greater journey. Okay. If you keep putting God first as you enter into adulthood, you're gonna discover that your identity isn't built by your campus or your career or your GPA or your popularity. It's built by Christ. And that foundation will outlast every degree you ever earn. Tomorrow, take one intentional step. If you're a student, research a local Bible-believing church. If you're a parent, pray over your child's future instead of worrying about it. If you're staying home, remember that every new season still requires faith. Movement matters. You know what? Here's something incredible. Jacob had no idea Joseph was alive. The sons had no idea they were walking towards restoration. They thought they were simply going to buy grain. And God knew they were about to experience healing. Isn't that how God works? Sometimes you think you're walking towards a classroom. God knows you're walking towards your calling. Sometimes you think you're moving into a dorm. God knows you're moving into discipleship. Sometimes you think you're choosing a college. God knows he's writing the next chapter of your testimony. Your assignment is obedience. God's assignment is the outcome. So trust him with it. All right. The courage to leave home isn't measured by how little fear you have, it's measured by how much you trust God while taking the next step anyway. One faithful step today actually can change generations tomorrow. Now, to my grandson Isaiah, one day you're going to pack your own bags and head into a new season. As your grandpa, I'll probably want to hold on to those moments a little longer than you will. But if we've all done our jobs well, we just won't be sending you away, man. We're going to be sending you with something that lasts. And I hope you'll remember that your worth isn't determined by the school you attend, the career you choose, or the people who you who accept you. Like your identity has already been settled by Jesus Christ. Wherever life takes you, don't leave your faith at home. Take it into every classroom, every friendship, every challenge, into every victory. God will already be there before you arrive. So walk boldly, stay humble, keep your eyes on Christ.
