Summer is finally here! As red haired and fair skinned ladies, we have had our share of unsafe sun practices. In this article, we talk about ways to keep you and your family safe during the sunny summer months.
There are two types of sunscreen on the market---a mineral barrier type or chemical type. The chemical type sunscreen is the most popular and widely used. Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals that include but are not limited to oxybenzone and avobenzone. Since the skin is our largest and most absorbent organ, these chemicals cross directly from the skin and into the tissues.
1,400+ sunscreens tested by the EWG, only 5% met their safety standards and over 40% were listed as potentially contributing to skin cancer.
The EWG’s most recent report listed Neutrogena as the #1 sunscreen brand to avoid, citing high concentrations of oxybenzone and other hormone disrupting chemicals, and misleading claims about their SPF levels.
