Language, memory, symbolic reasoning, mathematics, science, ethics, and culture all depend upon previous generations of accumulated conceptual construction. Every individual inherits an immense historical assembly index through civilization. Yet inheritance alone does not explain understanding. Knowledge is not acquired because concepts accumulate. Knowledge develops because each individual repeatedly integrates perception into identification, identification into abstraction, abstraction into application, and application into habitual competence. It is an ongoing process of integration through which stable assemblies emerge, preserve themselves against entropy, and become reusable components within ever more comprehensive organizations.
