Jill O'Boyle (00:01.934)
Hello friends and welcome back to another episode of Your Life, Your Story, Rise Up. I'm your host Jill O'Boyle and I am so excited for today's conversation because I have two very special guests that are joining me today. Two guests that might likely be completely unfiltered. We might be a little unpredictable today, which let's be honest, this is exactly why.
you are going to want to stick around until the very end to hear these two amazing guests that are joining me today. Today I get to introduce you to my two favorite humans in the entire world. Yes, I know I've had some amazing guests on the show and no offense to them, but these are my two favorite humans because they are my boys, Griffin and Brock. Welcome guys. Yup, that's me.
Welcome, welcome to the show. Hey, listen, this is gonna be fun, right? Because you get to come and join mom at work today. So at the time of this recording, it is spring break, you guys. And so we've had some fun. We've done some trips this week. We've had some time to get outside. We're here in Indiana. The weather has been a little bit like it's been on menopause, ladies. It's been up, down, all over the place, but bright and sunny today.
So I thought what would be fun today since the boys are home with me, why not bring them to work today? And let's just have a candid conversation about what do our kids really think about us? What do they hear when they're around us? What do we say that they pick up on? So this is gonna be a fun, honestly, very unfiltered. So I have no idea what they might say, which could be very entertaining. So.
All right, boys, on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the highest, I'll ask you first, how excited are you to be here today? Seven. a seven, I like it, okay, it's pretty good. Griff, how about you? Six. Six, just a little bit under Brock, but I think by the end of this, it's gonna be a 10, guys, it's going to be a 10. All right, so first question I have for you, what is this podcast even about? Do we even know?
Jill O'Boyle (02:21.43)
what we're joining today. What are we, what is the podcast, your life, your story rise up about? Either one of you can go first.
Mental health mental health Griffin says it's about mental health not bad Yeah, exactly this podcast we talk of all kinds about life our stories how We have highs we have lows we have battles that we have overcome But we have a God who walks through all of that with us, right? So
I love to help high achieving women, busy women get out of the overwhelm and some of the frustrations of life and live life on purpose. So yeah, so I think you guys can help these ladies today with that definitely. Right? What do you think? Yeah. Okay. All right. So let's let's think about this. So that's it. That's the podcast. Okay. What do you think?
mom does every day. Like if you had to explain my job to your friends, what would you say? That she helps people that like need help and like help people so they can grow up and be like good. Yeah. Help people grow up and be good and better. Right. Griff, what would you say? like life coach and like talk to people to like bring their spirits up.
Absolutely. Absolutely. That's pretty good guys. Yep. Life coach, speaker, podcast host, just basically trying to help women live a life more intentionally and on purpose. So excellent. Okay. What about dad? Dad works a lot, doesn't he? Yeah. What does dad, what do think dad does? Ships, things. Ships, multiple things. huh. Ships, mostly chocolate.
Jill O'Boyle (04:20.938)
ships mostly chocolate. Okay, so is he actually driving the truck and shipping chocolate? No, he's the owner.
Tells a company to then ship it to the store. Yep, yep. But you're both right. Yep, they're Brock's Sport and Oboe Oil Transportation right here. Yeah, we're a family logistics business, 3PL, that ships temperature controlled items. So anything that needs to stay at a certain temperature from point A to point B, right, we are that middle person that will help get, like Griffin said, mostly chocolate. We have a lot of chocolate accounts.
but we also work with a company that ships juice, right? What did you say earlier? Vitamins? Things that have to be at a certain temperature from point A to point B. All right. So what do you think, in your opinion, we have a lot of probably, I would say, moms, parents that listen to this show, what do you think as a kid's perspective that you think maybe parents stress about?
most in life? Money. Money. Money. Both of you think money? Money. Yeah. Why do you think that is? Because we need to buy stuff so we can live. Yeah. Yeah. Like vegetables. Vegetables. Yes. Why do we never buy vegetables? Yes, we have vegetables in this house. We probably need to eat more of the vegetables in this house, right?
Money, that is a big topic I think that probably does stress a lot of parents out because what do you guys think? Do you guys think it's pretty affordable to live? think it's cheap to live right now. $4 per gallon. $4 per gallon, I know, that is insane. We just filled up the Nissan and it was $83. Okay, so.
Jill O'Boyle (06:26.07)
You think parents mostly stress about money, but what do you guys think? Is that what you stress about? No. No. What do you guys stress about? Sports. Sports. What about sports? Just sports, you know. Like who's going to win the game? Like when you're watching sports or playing? Yourself. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which tell them what sports do you guys play? Baseball, basketball, and
lots and baseball football but you did play basketball this year. So when you guys are stressed in sports what are you stressed about?
Jill O'Boyle (07:23.11)
Absolutely believe in yourself that is huge right? Because you're you made the team right? Yeah, so somebody but who believes in you? Your coach your teammates your parents yeah
We believe in you. if you but if you don't believe in yourself, how are we gonna catch the ball? Right? Yeah, we got to believe in ourselves. Absolutely. What about you, Griff? What stresses you out the most with sports? Well, I'm stressing our watching also does. Yeah. Yeah. We got a big game tonight, right? Cardinals. More like Illinois. Illinois. Okay. Mom doesn't know. Yeah.
So if you were to tell these parents that stressing about money, what would be one thing that you would say maybe don't stress so much about? should they put their hope and trust in?
God. That's right. That's right. We can give all of our worries to God, right? And he can handle everything and the more generous we are, the more generous God wants to give to us, right? Awesome. All right. So let's think about
Jill O'Boyle (08:43.2)
Anything else outside of money? Is there anything else that you think adults worry about more than kids? Taxes. taxes. Very timely because it is tax season. And you are right. I think the kids are picking up what mom and dad talk about a lot. Money and taxes. Yep. What are taxes? Do we even know what taxes are?
Yeah, taxes are due a certain day, but like you have sales tax, right? But we also have property taxes and electricity, right? All our bills. So we pay these taxes into the who? The government. The government. Yeah. Yeah. So taxes can be sometimes stressful, something you guys don't really worry about quite yet, right? No, no, no.
All right, so let's go, let's think about, so I appreciate your guys' opinion on that. I think all the adults listening probably agree that sometimes money can be a stressor for sure. And my advice for that is yes, it can be if you let it be, right? And we live in a world right now, it's getting a little bit crazy with the prices and how much things are rising, but.
The said it earlier, we gotta put our trust in God, right? And he can pull us through. We can also work hard and make sure we're spending our expenses and being financially smart and saving, right? We talked a lot about savings with the boys, saving their money. All right, let's go to something fun. So we talked about spring break. So we just got back. We went to Red River Gorge, Kentucky. What was your guys' favorite part?
of that trip.
Jill O'Boyle (10:40.59)
Yeah, did that was fun wasn't it? What was your favorite part about going up on that skylift? Yeah, and the mountains yep, what was your favorite part on going down that trail?
seeing how God created all of like just nature. Griffin said it was because you were the leader. Were you the leader of our pack? Yeah. Yeah. You were going super, super fast. What about you, Griff? What was your favorite part of our trip? Probably the underground kayaking, which is really cool. Yeah, you went in a cave and then you have to like kayak like around. It was really fun. It was cool, wasn't it? Yeah. It was this complete underground.
cave basically. Water. And what was really cool was all we had was a little headlight on our little head gear, right? Talk about that. Remember the time? What did he have us do? And then he had us turn off our light and it was just complete darkness. Like all you could hear was like drips in the water. Yeah. It was really cool. What did you like about that?
being in there. What was it that like made that the special part of the trip? there was huge trout. Which is cool. Yeah, was trout in the water. You could see the fish. Yeah. I liked it because it was just something unique and different, right? Like doing something that is fun and adventurous that you don't usually typically see in Indiana or really do, but also just the peace and the serenity of like the water.
But what I was blown away with was like the guy telling us all these details about this underground cave and how it formed. Like if they would have went like an inch one way or an inch the other, right? Like none of it would have existed. It would have just been a road. would have never been able to. A mile down or a mile up. would have achieved it. Mile down or mile up. Yeah. That sounds more like than an inch mom. Yeah. Glad you were listening to the student over there.
Jill O'Boyle (13:00.974)
Yeah, that was a fun trip. Okay, so we went there because A, it's spring break and we wanted to go do something, but I also wanted to go there because I'm planning a retreat there. Yeah. So what'd you guys think when I said I wanted to host a retreat at this place that we went to in Red River Gorge? Pretty good. Pretty good. What do you think, Griff? I thought it'd be a good place to have a retreat. Yeah. So it was called Dappled Lights in Red River Gorge.
It's stunning. so if ladies, if you haven't heard yet, my next retreat is coming up October 2nd through the 4th in Red River Gorge, Kentucky. It is a luxury glamping style retreat. So guys, if you were designing a retreat, what would you include in this retreat?
A full-size football field. Ooh, full-size football field. Okay. What about you?
Okay, but what if the theme of the retreat is to get out in like nature and like unplug? there is some waterfalls on the retreat though, isn't there? Did we get to experience that? Yeah.
We stuck our head under the waterfall. There's a little trail just right down from the retreat venue. It's called the Rookery. We walked down and found the overhang and a waterfall. It is awesome. Okay. What would make a retreat like really, really bad? Like if you guys were planning a retreat, what would make it like the worst retreat ever? No tents. No tents. Yeah. So you just had to be in a sleeping bag outside. yeah. Just a sleeping bag. Like
Jill O'Boyle (15:04.39)
No tent, just under the stars. Yeah, that would be a little, that would be a little scary. I don't think many women would come, do you? No. No. What about you?
Just don't go. There's no retreat. if there's no retreat, that would be the worst ever, right? Yeah, no retreat. Yeah. There's just nothing there. And then so you just that would be terrible, right? So it's a good thing your mom is somebody that plans retreats. So I give these places, women places to go, right? Yeah. How would you describe the accommodations at this retreat? What do you guys think about those tents? Are they like tents? No, they're like nice tents. Yeah, they're Hard wood in a Hard wood floors in these tents. Yeah.
What else was in there? Beds, couches, rugs, chandeliers. I never went in there. Yeah, didn't go. You were too busy playing outside, you? Yep, Griffin went in with me. Yeah, so ladies, this retreat is going to be incredible because it's an opportunity for us to truly unplug.
get out, explore the theme of the rooted in real retreat is to unplug, reconnect and rediscover you. And I wanted to go and experience the place that I had pretty much thought God had placed in my inbox. But you sometimes you look at pictures and you're like, is it really that awesome? And so we took a trip and I brought two kids with me who could just say, I think if this retreat is about having fun and unplugging and
recharging. I think this fits exactly the theme of it, right? Because we truly did have to unplug, didn't we? Did we have any Wi-Fi in our cabin? Like barely any. Yep.
Jill O'Boyle (16:57.354)
So yeah, we're kind of off the grid at the retreat, but luckily in the retreat space, in the event room, there is wifi. But when you go back to your tents, the whole concept is that we are gonna get off social media. We are gonna get detached from work and we're gonna take time to actually pour into ourselves, have fun, go on adventures like Griffin said in these underground caves and kayak, and just bring back the youth, right? As you saw and heard during our conversation today, like with my boys, like,
They don't stress about some things, right? And I think sometimes we get into adulthood and we worry a lot and we think about things and we should to a degree. But I think in the Bible, 365 times, Jesus tells us, do not fear, do not worry. So that's 365. One time for every single day in the Bible, do not fear or do not worry, right? He has, he knows you, he has a plan and he has a purpose for our life. And so at this retreat, it's a time for us to unplug.
Reconnect with what is that plan? What is that purpose that God has for our life and then bring out that fun adventure like these kids have? In our lives, so I'm so glad that they were able I am dad to go with me to kind of check out the Space so guys I just kind of shared what I think these women Why they should go what's involved? But what do you what do you think when I say I host these retreats for women? What do you think I want?
women to really take away the most.
the outside world outside world instead of like inside on like their phones or their stuff working all the time inside on their phones yeah like what's out there in the world like it's not just cornfields and nice houses yeah exactly right here in indiana that's all we see right a lot of cornfields lot of busyness a lot of
Jill O'Boyle (18:54.498)
Houses, but you can actually get out and see nature and the beauty and God's creation And really just I think life should be fun and adventurous and why don't we take an adventure together? And I think Griffin you just nailed it like why do you think people need to get away like that? That's right, yeah
You get a total big picture of just kind of life when we step outside of our own box and just get away. I think sometimes when we stay in our own box, we only see what we can only see. But when you get around women, you get around other people, when you get around different environments, you have more people that can pour into you and just see life a little bit differently. So that's great. All right, let's do one last thing. Let's do a rapid fire, okay? I'm gonna ask you guys this or that, and you guys just both can answer.
at the same time, okay? Here we go. That make sense? I'm gonna ask a question, you guys just shout it out. Okay, here we go, rapid fire, money or happiness? Happiness. Work hard or have fun? Have fun. Have fun. Phone or no phone for a week? Sometimes phone. I knew you guys would say that. How about family trip or just stay home and play games? Family trip. Family trip.
Of a family trip. I love traveling, love having fun. I really did enjoy getting out in nature with you guys and I was so glad that you guys came along. Did you guys enjoy it? All right, last question for you guys both. What is something that you wish parents understood about kids or about yourself?
We're dumb sometimes. We don't make the smartest decisions. Yeah, I think you know what? I don't even think that's a kid thing. I think there's parents out there that doesn't make them the smartest decisions either at times, right? Yeah. Yep. What else?
Jill O'Boyle (21:10.616)
something you wish parents understood about kids.
Jill O'Boyle (21:20.216)
Not sure? That's okay. That you just like to have a good time. Yeah. Like to have fun. Like to laugh. Yeah. Well, I don't think you guys are dumb at all. I think you guys are smart, smart kids and I think you are, you make me proud every day. And I think when we make mistakes, honestly, that's the best way we can learn when we make mistakes. So I say if you make a dumb mistake, it's okay. Guess what? You won't make that dumb mistake again, I bet.
No, and that's the best way to learn is sometimes we have to we have to fail right so that we can learn and that's sometimes the best way to learn All right. What do you think scale of 1 to 10 was this okay? Yeah, not bad. Maybe better than a 7 or 6. Yeah. Yeah, maybe we could do better next time. Should we do it again? Do another one maybe if if we were to do another
Podcasts take your kids to work. What should our topic be for the next one?
Jill O'Boyle (22:29.364)
Eating contest. Eating contest. Okay, what would we eat? Shrimp. Shrimp. Okay. Okay, well if we're eating then we can't be talking. The podcast is all about talking. I thought you guys might say we should have a podcast about sports. You guys could quiz me on sports because I would not do well would I?
All right, any last words of encouragement to our listeners today that you would like to share with them?
Jill O'Boyle (23:09.494)
it pertains to anything. Go poop at least once a day. Poop once a day words of wisdom by Griffin O'Boyle. Barack? Just like explore the outside world and just have fun. Absolutely explore the outside world have fun. And don't be stressed. I think that's a great idea and make sure you are pooping once a day.
All right friends, I hope that you just took a random nugget from the O'Boyle boys today. Enjoyed our conversation of take your kids to work. We'll see what might be in store for a future episode of the O'Boyle boys and what they have to say about mom, dad's working stress, money, or maybe none of that. Maybe we'll have a little episode on why pooping is important. That's it for you guys.
