SPEAKER_03

Hello and welcome back to the Reven and Glob Reviews podcast. We're back on our road to doomsday. I'm your host, Andy. We're back here, Adam. How are we doing? I'm doing alright. That is always good to hear, especially after the conversation we had. Just off mic before we started recording. Oh, we'll never go to San Diego Comic-Con.

SPEAKER_02

No, we will not.

SPEAKER_03

But yes, we're back. We're back. Back again. And like I said, I'm the host, and Adam's here, still celebrating the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl. Yes, I am.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I can say what I'm holding over all my friends forever and evermore. A good thing we're not friends, so you can't hold it over my head.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, we're back on the road to doomsday. If you haven't already, guys, make sure you go check out last week's episode where Adam and I talked about Thor Ragnarok, the shot in the arm that that franchise desperately needed.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it did.

SPEAKER_03

This week, we're here to talk about the what many thought could have been the ending of the X-Men trilogy. And that is X-Men The Last Stand.

SPEAKER_02

That should have been the ending.

SPEAKER_03

God. I don't, you know what? I'm not gonna say that I wish it was too, because we've had some really good and some really bad X-Men movies post this movie coming out.

SPEAKER_02

The only one I can think of is was it uh X-Men First Class?

SPEAKER_03

X-Men First Class is great. Let's not let's not disrespect let's not disrespect X-Men Days of Future Past. That one's also great. Don't eh me. But we do have X-Men Apocalypse Apocalypse. Who's like for me, it's like my guilty pleasure movie. I think that movie's I find so much enjoyment in that one, but I know it's one of the bad ones. We also have X-Men Wolverine Origins. We have that one called Wolverine. Wolverine. The Wolverine. The Wolverine is really good until the ending. We then have Logan. Let's not forget Logan. Yeah, Logan. Oh, and the heck? Um, what's that? Oh, what's that one called? Uh Dark Phoenix. Ew. Ill. Yeah. Ew. Oh, and I guess technically because it's in within universe, um, the Deadpool trilogy.

SPEAKER_01

Do you? Alright, we got the Deadpool.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. All in all, all in all, all in all. But um, yeah, we're gonna talk about X-Men the Last Stand. The I'd say this movie, before I watched it, because I think I said it in the last movie on the last episode of the pod, that I, for the life of me, can't remember this movie. Couldn't remember a single thing. All I remember is like one image, and we'll get into it. But I couldn't remember a single thing. So heading into it, I was like, okay, this third movie kinda has a lot to live up to because the second movie was so good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was.

SPEAKER_03

So were you this movie came out in 06, which is oh my god, it's been 20 years. 20 years. It's been 20 years. 20 years. Um, I know Adam's been excited to talk about this movie since we started doing the X-Men movies.

SPEAKER_01

Um Mainly because I know how how like divisive it is.

SPEAKER_03

Oh. And boy is it. I think you even mentioned how divisive it was um back when we did the first movie, and I, you know, we let it be known that we'll eventually get to the X-Men, X-Men the Last Stand. Um, do you remember when when did you watch this movie? Did you watch it when it first came out, or was it like, you know, yeah, I think I did.

SPEAKER_02

I think it can't I watched it as soon as it came out on uh DVD.

SPEAKER_00

Remember those?

SPEAKER_02

Remember that, folks? Yeah, remember that, kiddos? When you had to go to a D blockbuster to get your movies?

SPEAKER_00

Oh I just missed getting candy from there.

SPEAKER_03

It was like a library for me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I I I like I said, I I for the life of me could not remember this movie. I could not. Um so it was it was I don't want to say it was nice to see how this movie I was interested. Very interested. Because like I said, I feel like it had quite a bit to live up to compared to the second movie. Because the second movie is one of those rare instances where the second movie's way better than the first. Yeah. Right? So I watched it, and let me tell you, opinions were made. Thoughts were thought, were thoughted, were thunk, you know. Before we get into it though, uh make sure you guys follow us over on Instagram. Don't think I forgot, follow us over on Instagram at Revitn GoPod, where you can find Adam's latest review, which is uh which one? Did you post the the newer one or yet? Or by the time they hear this, I will have posted it. So which is it, Adam?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, uh, it was uh pretty lethal. And uh it's the Uma Thurman uh action drama movie or action thriller movie.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. I will definitely be reading it because I have not seen that movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

No spoilers, no spoilers. Oh, no spoilers. Go check out the post after you've listened to this episode. After you listen to this episode, of course. But yeah, make sure you follow us over on Instagram under at Revitn Go Pod. Now, Adam, let's get into X-Men The Last Stand. Alright, before we get into let I say we just go straight into like the the divisiveness of this movie. But before we do, yeah, I want to say one thing. I love me some Kelsey Grammar.

SPEAKER_01

Me too.

SPEAKER_02

He is phenomenal as Beast in this movie. He's like the best thing in this movie, right?

SPEAKER_03

Oh man, I just yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's the per he's also surprised, like he's he actually is like the surprisingly perfect cast for him. Yeah, because he's the Beast is like the point of Beast is that he's like the is the doc the dichotomy of his character. He looks like the ferocious monster, yet he's the most sophisticated person in the room.

SPEAKER_03

He's got that voice.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Like his mo like his lines delivery are phenomenal.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And of course, you guys know we have a bunch of our cast back, rightfully so. You know, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen. Oh, great casting from this from the series, man. Butcher her name. Gene Gray. Fomkey? Fomkey? Famky? Gene Gray? Yeah, Gene Gray. Uh the actress of fame. Fomke. I'm sorry, I'm butchering. But we also got James Marsden. Can't forget James Marsden. Oh, you know, I we can I can't wait to talk about Cyclops and James Marsden in this movie because you know he was like one of the great things about the last movie. So it's gonna be very exciting to see what this movie has in store for him. Oh man. Can't wait for that. You know what, Adam? Let's I say let's let's let's get into it. Let's get into it. I want to start off with So I watch this movie and something happens at the end and I'm like, wait, let me go back to the second movie real quick. Because, you know, this is these are Marvel movies. I don't know why I didn't do this for the first one either, but a big thing that I I'd say probably Marvel made famous are post-credit scenes. So I went back to go see if X-Men United had a post-credit scene. It doesn't, but the last shot of the movie is Professor X uh basically teaching a class, and he just kind of has this like his face changes a little bit, and he's like, he notices something behind him. There's a window behind him, and he turns around and he faces the window as if s he senses something. And it's just like you all you see is the trees and the water, and that's it. And he has this look on his face, and he gets asked if he's okay, and he goes, I think everything's gonna be just good, just great. And we pan out of the school over the water, and you kind of have to like really, really look at it, but you can see something under the water, like zooming through the water, pretty big. And at first glance, you're like, what the heck is that? Unless you know, unless you know. And um, this movie pretty early on just shows you, hey! Someone's back, Jean is back. What okay? Okay, she like sacrificed herself in the last one. Okay, she's there. Okay, because someone went to go look for her. Oh my gosh, here's Scott Summers and Gene Gray reunited, and I'm not gonna lie, dude. I was like, you know what? Love prevails. I know y'all have this weird love triangle between you two and Logan, and I kind of don't get the love triangle because I feel like she's I feel like Gene's kind of like I don't know why you're doing this to Scott. Like I like she's not saying no to Logan. You know, it's quite it's quite annoying. It's quite wanna get into it. I feel like we argued about it. Not argued, but I feel like we really went in on it on the in the last movie. How I don't get hello instantly, like I get it, she's a beautiful woman, but like, but like, how is it like I'm instantly like I just don't find you attractive, I'm in love with you from the get-go. I'm gonna be honest, Adam. I don't get it. I don't I I really don't, and I don't know why she like entertains you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, uh, I don't understand why I think there's supposed to be like this from what I've heard like people say it's supposed to be like she's like interested in his mind because it's damaged and she can't read it fully, like there's like that interest, but like I don't know, like it's so like you know, her being every woman's dream in these Netflix original movies and books.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I found a broken man, let me fix him.

SPEAKER_02

God, so and there's like a reason for like it. At least in the comic book, there's a reason. The reason is that he looks she he looks uh Gene looks like uh Rosie, one of like uh Wolverine's first loves.

SPEAKER_03

Not that moon bitch, is it?

SPEAKER_02

What no, no, no. So there were so this is a comic book. They never they never did they never made this character into the movies. Okay, but there's like um so you know how like in X-Men Origins Wolverine that um he runs away, right? Yes, with saber tooth?

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

So he doesn't in the comic books, he doesn't run away with saber tooth, he runs away with his um with his mate, with like the maid of his house, Rosie, and they're kind of in like a secret couple couple until he accidentally kicks her, kills her.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and like that's why he like that's explained that that's supposed to be the reason why he's so into jeans, because he she she reminds him a lot of Rosie.

SPEAKER_03

And in what is it? Is it in the second movie? He has this dream or nightmare where he wakes up because he accidentally stabbed Gene.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Foreshadowing, foreshadowing. Anywho, let's get back to what's happening. Gene is back. Scott Summers runs into her, they're kissing. Oh, love at last, and you can see, like, you know, obviously you close you kiss with your eyes closed, and then Scott quickly opens his eyes and you see his face kind of like I don't even know what to explain it. I don't even know. How would you explain what hit was going on with his face?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Uh oh, isn't it she like oh she she's able to remember Scott can't take off his glass, uh can't open his eyes without his glasses because his lasers will just keep going firing.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that effect. I'll give it this. Um, we're gonna start off with a really another really good praise. When he takes off his uh his glasses and like the the lasers are like flashing, but like she's able to like stop it from flashing. Really cool shot, really cool effect. Yeah, they kiss she does something to his face, and then we cut back to Professor X, who's like, whoa, and like the whole school pretty much feels it. Haliberry Storm and Logan run to Professor X and he's like, go to whatever the lake is called, and they head the they get there and there's like floating rocks, like, huh, this is weird. And Logan goes in one direction, and Storm goes in the other. Logan sees Scott's glasses floating and they're like, Oh my gosh, Gina's here. So they take her back.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what uh thank you They fucking correct me if I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_02

They fucking killed They fucking killed Scott Before he did a goddamn thing in the series.

SPEAKER_00

He killed they they killed they oh I'm not even like over I wish I didn't kill you, but like but like but like he diz I'm annoyed it took that two fucking seconds it took it two fucking seconds to piss me off I got lightheaded they killed Scott Summers and not only do they kill him, they kill him.

SPEAKER_03

I totally get Gene can't control whatever the fuck is going on with her, and they kill him. You know what? That sucks, but okay. But you kill him not only this early, you kill him off screen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Bye, Scott. We barely knew you.

SPEAKER_03

Oh Adam, go ahead, give me your thoughts on them killings.

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, well, there I was like, well, there goes that character that did absolutely nothing throughout this entire damn series. Like, and here's the thing. So here's the thing, so when X-Men one came out, I didn't really know the X-Men, like I wasn't that into comic books, you know, because I was just a kid at the time, right? But like by X3, like I played like the games and read some of the comics at that point, and I'm like, wait, isn't he like the leader of the X-Men? Isn't he like the big deal of this, like one of like the bigger characters in the franchise? And he's just gone by someone like he literally did nothing. He literally got he literally was just the first movie, he's just there to be like Wolverine's foil against Gene Gray. He's just an obstacle, and then and the second movie, he's just uh it's just him obsessing over Gene Gray, and then the third movie is dead, he's just gone. The director and writers really hate Cyclops. I have no other reasoning I can think of, but other than they just really just do not like the Cyclops character or James Marson. Maybe they don't like James Marson. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I was so fucking pissed. First off, I don't even know how I forget that he died. How did I forget that? Oh, it's like I was watching this movie for the first time. There's a there's like I said, I don't remember much that pissed me off for the same reasons that you mentioned. Like in this in the first movie, like he's the leader, and I know like he's supposed to be a big deal, but he does nothing. Grant and but we talked about the first movie, the action sucks in that movie. So they gotta like nerf everybody. Okay, whatever. The second movie, he's better, but like he's just there still. He's just a backdrop. How how how is the supposed leader uh of of them of the X-Men a backdrop to to I get if you're a backdrop to to Logan, he's the main character. We all know that. I'm not complaining about that, but like the the most the thing he does the most is just like protect his like not even protect, but like hey, he tells Logan, hey, that's my girl. That's all he does. And then and then you have yeah, you have the audacity to kill him off screen.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just cuts away and boom, he's gone. We find his what was it? We didn't we find his broken uh sunglasses?

SPEAKER_03

They weren't even broken, they were intact. Can't even do that. And you can't even explain to me what I don't I don't get how they killed him.

SPEAKER_02

I don't get the point of his character then. Like they literally have him do literally nothing throughout this entire trilogy so far.

SPEAKER_03

He he and he and um he and Logan had a really good scene in the last movie when they were both crying together. That was really good. Yeah. Then this Ah that's good. Let's you know what? Let's move on, cuz there's more. Let's move on, cause there's more in this movie just to piss me off. My gosh. They take her back to the compound. Uh it's not even a compound, the school or whatever. And they're like, hey, she looks fine. And then Professor Xavier, Professor X, lets us know that he created when she was a young girl, a child, he created these like psych psychic barriers in her mind to isolate her powers from her like self-conscious. And that in doing that, it created a split personality or like a an a second personality, a dual personality, that's what his that's what his words were, in in Gene. And that that's that the the gene you guys that we've known that we've met across the first two movies is the gene that like you know is the gene without the knowledge of the other side of her powers. And he deemed the name of the other powers, it manifested itself into what is now known as the Phoenix. I'm just like okay, and we finally have a scene where like we all kind of like especially all the s all the people here at the school look up to Professor X. You know, rightfully so. He's he's trying to teach them that um it's okay that you're different and all that stuff. Really strong message, you know. We finally get a scene where like because Logan he's telling Logan this, and Logan is like, what the hell? Like, what did you do? Like you're the reason behind this. You cause this, and now you're trying to put up these barriers to save her from herself again when because she doesn't even know about these, all these powers that are just hitting her and she can't control them now. Yeah, but now I'm just like go ahead, go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they never my another my biggest problem too is they really don't explain, like they say she's a dual personality, but it really doesn't even feel like it. She just seems like she's just really pissed off. Yeah, you know what I mean? You know, I've seen like we've seen I don't know if you've seen Split, but like where like it's supposed to be like a completely different person and taking over their minds and stuff like that, but like no, she's just like it's still her.

SPEAKER_03

It's just the one with James McAvoy's. Like we know the the nice smart gene gray that there is, and then we know this evil one that we come to see in this movie that's just like hey, I'm not to be trifled with. But she doesn't speak, it's just she's like has those evil eyes.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she doesn't the fact that she doesn't talk also makes it really like hard to understand where she's what she's even talking about, why she's so angry, what the hell's going on. Is she just like a mindless monster now? What what's going on? I don't know. Yeah, but everything with Jeannie Gray in this movie is like very confusing because like she talks, I think she talks to Logan like halfway through the movie, and she just says, I'm very angry. Why?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Yeah. And then oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

I guess, I guess. I was pretty pissed at that. And but like I liked how we now have this in the third movie, we now have this, like we now know that prof Professor X messed up. Like we now know he's not all that nobody's perfect, but like this person that I guess as the audience we also look up to because he's like something of like a not an idol, but you know, uh a mentor to all these students. We look up to him. And now we have a different like aspect of him, like he's willing to do things to like kind of control one of his students. We he's now doing something that we didn't even know he could do. So, you know, it's interesting to see. And and you know what? You know what? You know what they do? You know what they do, you know what they do, Adam, because you've seen the movie. You've seen the movie, and and I I clearly forgot. And you know what they fucking do? They fucking oh it's like they're like, how can we like just piss people off? How can we piss people off? I'm probably jumping straight to like the halfway point of this movie, but I really don't care because this part of the movie pissed off. So, you know, Magneto's with his people, Professor X is with his people, and they're like, let's try to uh meet up this one uh mutant and try to get him to be on some of our sides, and Gene's there, and what happens? Gene loses her shit. She loses her mind. Oh we also get a Stanley cameo, R I P Stanley. R I P. Um she can't control it. And I think at this point when she knows she's angry, she kind of like has the realization that maybe Xavier is the reason this is happening to her. Like you can like blame it on him for instead of like you know what? Why didn't he like slowly let her in on it? Because it's implied that she doesn't know what's happening. He doesn't even know if she knows what he did. Clearly she didn't because now she's pissed at him.

SPEAKER_00

And I don't want to yell into the mic I'm calm. I'm calm. No, I'm not. She fucking kills Professor X. And it felt so just like I don't know what it is. Unearned, I guess.

SPEAKER_03

Again, we still have a whole lot of movie left to go. And like oh, I'm mad. I'm mad at thinking about it again. I'm mad thinking about it again. Go ahead, Adam. What did you think of Gene Gray killing Professor X?

SPEAKER_02

I kinda knew. I kind of knew it was gonna happen. They were like uh they were they were they were hinting at it because I they're because like all of a sudden we're seeing like, ooh, turns out Xavier wasn't such the good guy after all. And I'm like and the movie's like really trying to force that perspective on us, even though I kind of feel like it's unearned. And now I'm like, and then I was like, and then when and then when it finally happens and we're like Ging execs her like kills Professor X. I'm like, oh well crap, what are they supposed to do now? Like like they're just killing them off left and right. Like, what's they're really not giving any they're they really were just planning on letting this be the end. Like, I know, but like I don't know, it like everything they they do, like some of these big moments, like like just don't feel earned, honestly. Though honestly that's my biggest problem.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, an hour 44 movie, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then we're just kind of like it feels like they have to like they're trying to wrap this up as fast as possible. They killed Xavier, they killed uh they killed Scott for some some reason. I don't know, even though he literally has done nothing.

SPEAKER_03

Even though this uh Professor X one pissed me off, I was more mad about the Scott one. Rightfully so, I think, you know. But yeah, okay. So far, like okay. Again, we all know that this dark we now this thing is now the dark phoenix, isn't just a phoenix, this is the dark phoenix. It's a big thing, okay? We know, and uh Professor X lets us know that Gene is does he say she's the only one, or she's like one of the few, like what do they call it, like level five, category five? Omega level mutants. Yeah and that like her power is like you know pretty much limitless and all that stuff. So you're like, okay, but like that alone, like this whole dark thing story is a big thing to tackle and and I totally get with that with this being the whole I guess we didn't know at the time, the final movie in the trilogy that you want to like up the stakes but stakes this big with things you kind of have to like include. Again, if you're gonna do Professor X's death, okay. If you're gonna kill off some of the X-Men, okay. But you're killing them off like like left and right, and you're kind of like rushing through the story and doing that. There's no real time to like I don't even think they mourn Scott.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I think they don't they mourn him, like don't they just share like the f get his funeral at the same time as uh Professor X and jeans is she buried with them too?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah they buried Yeah I'm just like what are we what are we doing?

SPEAKER_03

But this time we got to actually see her kill the person and she basically Thanos them away.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, PG they gotta mean that PG they gotta keep that PG 13 movie. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

At least they went a little bit uh more like hardcore with it with um when the end of the movie, which we'll we'll get into. Um let's get into something some positive. We got Magneto showing off his powers. Cool. He's uh taking out crushing trucks, flipping over trailers, um, and he's recruiting. Now he unlocks the motherfucking juggernaut. Oh I have the thing he says at the end of the movie, yeah. I have the thing he says at the end of the movie, but we're gonna get we'll we'll get to that because I like that quote. It's a it's pretty funny.

SPEAKER_01

He's a fun character, ain't he?

SPEAKER_03

Sure is. Uh you know what? I needed something to kind of pick me up because I was pissed.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I I think one of the best characters in this like is Magneto. Yes, like we need to see he's like the best. Uh what did we just get to teach so much? Like, they really do explore, like we get to teach so like they really do like show so many sides of his character. Like when Charles died, and like the Brotherhood, like a lot of like, I think what was his name? Pyro Pyro was all like, I'm glad I would have killed him. He's like, hey, don't talk to me. Like he like put respect to his name. He's done more for mutants than that than any of us ever have, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and even you know, he didn't he at the end of the day, he still didn't want uh Xavier to die.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he wanted to convince Xavier as much because he knows how the good that Xavier can bring to the mutants. He uh it was just more of the fact he was just too pacifistic with it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like they're they see these guys are perfect, they're like a perfect embodiment of how the fucking world should be. These two guys 100% have like the same goal in mind, and that is to kind of like protect mutants, but the way they each want to go about it is so different that like morally they can't like coexist together, but they do because they're best friends. It's so it's so good. Yeah, best friends, best friends who want the same thing, but can really only see about it in two completely not even different ways, complete opposites, right? Yeah, and as much as oh, go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, another good scene though with Xavier or not Xavier, uh with Magneto is that after this is uh that he like so after this, we um because right now they've I don't know if you you haven't mentioned it, but like the whole point of this movie is that humanity has came up has rep has made a cure for mutants that turns them back to being normal humans. Cure for mutants, so you know, like that was like that's the whole point of this movie. That's like the big, you know, like so um like social point of view of it. And um so in so but in this team where like that you were just saying that where Magneto's recruiting, uh what's they weaponized the cure, they should they were gonna shoot at him, they were gonna shoot at him, but they uh Mystique got like you know, Mystique his right hand, she she jumps in front of it and takes the shot for him, and she gets turned into a normal human.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that mean is gone. And before real quick, Mystique is gone, yeah. I do want to mention that you mentioned you you brought up that you think that the best character across these three movies has been Magneto. I'd say the best relationship between these three movies that we we really talk about it in the in the in the last movie is the relationship between Magneto and Mystique. Like it's not like we're in love, it's like she is his right hand person. And just like they they speak, they spoke so much to each other via just like looking at each other, just via their body language in the last movie. Their relationship in the last movie is so good, and it really, really builds you know the chemistry between them. And again, she's here doing work with Magneto, and the second she like she like I don't say loves, but like she's willing to do anything for Magneto. Takes the shot for her. She's loyal, she's very loyal, takes the shot for him to protect him. She loses her mutant powers, and it's crazy how quick it works, too. Like instantly she loses her the blue scaly skin that she has. Yeah, so she's left there naked, and Magneto looks at her and he goes, Man, oh, he goes, Oh my word. And you were so beautiful, and leaves her, dude. My heart.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he just yeah, he just ditched her immediately. Like his most loyal soldier, he leaves her the moment she's not immune. She's because I think he said, You're not one of us anymore.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he did say that. She's like, Will you not be wild, wild?

SPEAKER_02

Uh that's messed up. I think she literally just wants to snitch on him.

SPEAKER_03

He does, and it's funny because I go, Magneto is showing off. Magneto showing off is cool because that's when he flips the truck and all that stuff. And then the immediate next one is like Mystique loses powers, Magneto kicks her out. Magneto is here. Yeah, yo. I oh I was so hurt. I was like, Mystique. I damn she's ah I was hurt by it. I I I genuinely was. Um and then we later on did get Magneto leading up to the the final act, the final fight, Magneto showing off again, where he moved dude, this part was sick. Again, fuck you for for kicking out Mystique and just leaving her there. But he you know, yeah, he's a badass because he's now he like he moves the Golden Gate Bridge.

SPEAKER_00

He moves, yeah. Oh yeah, dude.

SPEAKER_02

They always have some they always have some cool moment with Magneto's powers, man.

SPEAKER_03

Like that was so freaking cool, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah. Magneto and his powers are like they always do something cool with his powers. I I don't they always come like either doing that, the gun thing in the first movie. Oh, yeah. Um, I forgot like uh him like rearranging, like fixing up Cerebro. That was cool, yeah. In the second, yeah. There's always just this cool grandiose moment with him and his powers.

SPEAKER_03

And that's not just in these three movies, that's across like every X-Men movie.

SPEAKER_02

Um, yeah. Days of Future Past.

SPEAKER_03

Um even in was it Apocalypse when when spoiler, you know, they they kill his fan, he kills all those people with the necklace. Really cool. Oh incredibly sad. Love me, some Michael Fastbender. Can't wait to eventually get into those X-Men movies. But um, but yeah, like they always make sure to show off like something really unique or something really like on a grand scale when it comes to showing off Magneto's powers. Um I don't think this next not this next scene, but I don't think this scene of Logan going on the killing spree was as great as the killing spree he did in the last movie because he killed those people who invaded the school. But it was still again it's like the only thing that's missing is the blood. It's crazy. It's still a really good you know, killing spree that we got Logan to do. Always great, and I like when he's in that mode, he's in it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh uh another great another great thing. We have to be we get introduced to Beast in this movie. Uh Kelsey Grammar as Beast. And what can I say these people know how to cast uh cast for these characters, man? Because Kelsey Grammar rules as Beast. Like he is another one of the best things about this movie, and I love his character so much.

SPEAKER_03

He's he's that perfect. We we mentioned at the beginning of this episode, but like he's that perfect blend of like he can tear you apart because you know he's beast, but he's also like a what is he like a politician or whatever.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's just he's like he's a very like he's a sophisticated man with uh a very sophisticated and intelligent man. He's like the most like he's the most like polite, proper. Every convers like his dialogue is like the he has like the best written lines in this movie. Like, honestly, like he has like important, like all like he's always like the voice of reason in the group. Like, um, I remember there was some like early on, like when they announced the cure thing, Storm was like very upset. He's like, like, why are people like she was like, Why would mutants ever change themselves? She's like and he literally was like, Hey, some of us don't some of us didn't ask for these powers, some of us did not do not want to be what we are. And and like uh he's like, it's some like looks we're not all lucky like you to get powers that just that didn't affect us physically, or like or get like godlike powers.

SPEAKER_03

Some of us have some of these powers, mutant powers are curses, and you know, he literally and it's a very, very valid point, and it's not just something that's like it's a really nice thing to not a nice thing, but it's a really like important thing to ask. Um, and it's it's a good thing that they had a uh specifically Beast, um, who's like not he's that he's affected by it negatively, but his answer is very real.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's like, Yeah, look at me. I'm look I'm um like I'm a monster. Like I didn't ask to be like this. I shed on the carpet, I shed on the carpet for God's sakes, and then like uh some is yeah, some unions aren't so lucky with their abilities or powers, and some people need this.

SPEAKER_03

I think this movie does that well because even though like you can you can apply that to Gene too, like she didn't ask for this, and now because I guess she didn't really get help or whatever, and didn't have a say, you know, choice is a really big thing in this movie because yeah, Xavier chose to put barriers in her mind to help keep this power away from her, and Logan brings up to him, like, okay, that was your choice, but it's very obvious from what you're telling me that Gene didn't have this choice.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, it's it's about choice. Like, do you choose to get here? Like it puts up and it doesn't really lean one way or the other. It literally it literally just like here's your truth, like this is what the options are. It's like which is right and what is wrong, is that's up for you to decide. Um, another great line, like another great line of dialogue was between him and the president when Beast found out when he weaponized the like Beast was like on the fence of being on the X-Men side or with the government, government on this, and he's like, but then like it was just this big moment where he found out the the president that they weaponized the cure for like and he's like he he gives this big speech and he's like I have to be with my people, I have to stand with them because uh like they both have and they both come to a general understanding, like they they both like here's the no, it wasn't no argument, it wasn't it was a like there was no like you know screaming or anything, it was just an argument of putting out both sides of the fact, and like both at the end, both men understood each other better. I was like, damn.

SPEAKER_03

A little bit more needs right now.

SPEAKER_02

I know, right?

SPEAKER_03

A little bit more. We don't need uh instantly, we don't maybe we need to yell every now and then, but we don't need to be attacking each other.

SPEAKER_02

Like we exactly, like like you we don't and we don't have to agree. That's the thing. We don't have to like agree exactly. What can't we just like like they're like I understand your position, I you understand mine, let us but yeah, and then we'll we'll go our separate ways from there.

SPEAKER_03

Like and like you know, there's this whole thing we're we we're talking about. This is like between the president and beast and like choosing to be this or that, but then we even talked about it with um Magneto and Professor X. Yeah, like they're both wanting to do the same things in different ways, they don't fight each other, they're just like we talked it out, um, we both disagree. We'll see each other again. Like that that's that's that's it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There's some great moments in this movie, it just feels a lot very very rush and making its point.

SPEAKER_03

Unfortunately. I in my opinion, because like you know, this is the final fight. Fight of fights. And I gotta say, for the most part, it's pretty great. I yeah really enjoyed it. And we finally get the quote I've been saving I'm the Juggernaut, bitch! Love it.

SPEAKER_02

A lot of people hate this a lot of people hate this character, but I love him. He was hilarious.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I needed it because I was mad. And the beginning of the movie kind of like opens up with our X-Men, um kind of just like doing some training, some fight training, teaming up. They're like, you know, we gotta work together and get all this. And it comes full circle by the end of the movie because they get this plan together, they work together, cause a distraction, and they stab Magneto with the needles to give him the cure. And I'm just like Whoa. Whoa, they they done got him, and they kind of call. Um back when Magneto when Mystique lost her powers, Magneto tells her, You're not one of us anymore. Or he was like, You're one of them now, or something like that. Um Magneto is like so shocked that he got hit with the cure, he goes, I'm and then Logan finished it off with saying, one of them now. Like I said, there was some really good delivery, there's really good line deliveries in this movie. That's one of them. Yeah. Um, I know we're in the midst of the the like towards the end of the final fight, but I do want to go back and say that there's a character we uh were annoyed about in the first movie that is Rogue. What'd they do to better her character in the second movie? They didn't have her in it as much.

SPEAKER_02

She's uh uh she's like a there's like a background thing with her, with her and bot again. She's like but like she's sort of like the character, like going like she she's she kind of represents the everyday mutant thinking about what's happening. Like, oh my god, there's a cure, there's a way I'm not a freak anymore, you know. Like that's how she's like thinking it because you know she has like one of the worst powers ever where she can't touch nobody.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And the only reason she really because like even though she can't like touch somebody else, like she's or like skin-to-skin contact, she and Bobby have still like you know, they've still made it work, they're together, and she again, this has been this was also like a movie about choices and stuff like that, about whether or not you should get the cure or not. And again, like to what B said, there's some people who su really suffer because of their powers that they didn't choose. Yeah, um, and Rogue is one of them. And even though I hate this scene where she's like looking at Bobby who's outside, and he's like like skating with this other girl.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, he's like this is where Kitty Pride shows up, and like then there's like this weird love triangle between them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and um and he's like like Bobby's kind of a dick for this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he is like, dude, what do you think was gonna happen, dude?

SPEAKER_03

I I was like, ew.

SPEAKER_02

So I love how they're kind of leaning back into the comic book of because like in the comic books, Bobby uh Iceman here, he's uh he he's a player. He's that's this whole thing. He's that he's you know a womanizer, you know, you know the type. He's a Johnny Storm kind of guy, you know. Yeah, and like I don't know like if they were trying to lean into that now, like all right, we really didn't do that much in the first movie, but let's do it now, let's make him a horrible team. I'm like, no, don't do it, don't go changing your way now. Because that just ruins everything we just knew about him before. Like uh because now it just feels out of character for him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and it's like I don't know, it's weird. I I I hate it because why are we doing this? But it's like they needed a reason to give more like you can make the argument like why would why would people want to want like they posed the question, why would anybody why would a hu why would a mutant want to get cured and Beast puts the the very valid reason as to why they would. So again, I don't I don't get why like they had to have this to be the reason why Rogue goes and gets it. Because it seemed like she was maybe not content with the life she lived, but it's like they made it work. But they're like, uh let's have this weird little love triangle thing and Bobby be a dick about it to really get and cause now because now she's doing this for him, and I'm like, ew, no, don't do it for him.

SPEAKER_02

Like, look at he's a douchebag, yeah. Like, okay, it's not like he doesn't really do anything with uh Kitty Pride, he just sort of like ice skates with her, like right there, it's like a very romantic like scenario. It's gonna be oblivious and being just him being, you know, like stupid idiot, like I would say, yeah. Like he's just like I don't think he had like romantic attention. I think he's just being nice and just being an idiot, thinking, oh, I'm gonna ice skate at the midnight, I'm gonna skate ice skate, make it like an ice cream for this new girl, and I'm gonna ice skate with her in front of my girlfriend who I can't tell who's been having self-esteem issues, because that's not gonna backfire in my face.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm doing I'm doing things with this one girl. The things I mean are like I think she slips and she she, you know, he grabs her and he holds her hand. Yeah, that's what I mean, just hold holding hands.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's just an obli he's just an insensitive idiot.

SPEAKER_03

And this is the reason why she ends up going to go get the um the cure. And by the end of the movie she comes by, she's like, Look it, I got the cure, and gets to touch his hand. Again, she's one of the people who um who are like in line with what Beast was saying about something like that. Some people just like quite literally suffered because of it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's that.

SPEAKER_03

But let's get back to the really good ending of the fight scene. Magneto has just been stabbed with the needles, and he's you know, he's one of them now. And then Gene shows up, and we all know Gene's been losing her mind lately, but she is seemingly calmed down. You can tell by the eyes, because the eye the darkness in the eyes go away, right? And just when she seems to like, I'd say kind of get it under control, of course, it has to be the powerless humans that make it worse. Because what would you call it? The army, like the the mutant anti-mutant soldier department, task force all come out from the bridge, and I'm a s I'm just gonna assume they were told fire at all the fire at all the mutants, rightfully so, because there's a giant essential war going on between them and they fire. Logan yells, don't fire, they fire, and Gene stops every single one of them in mid-air, and now she's fucking pissed. PS. Oh, so good. She like without hesitation, Thanos them all the way, yeah, every single last one of them. And I was like, Yeah, fuck you guys. Mutant and proud bitches.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And she starts Thanosing not just like them, but like like the things around her. She's causing so much destruction. Other people that were in uh Magneto's, like, what do they call it? The Brotherhood are also being Thanos away. They can't be stopped. Logan is like, I'm the only one that can stop her storm. Get them out of here. So there's Gene standing all granted. The shot of her with like the light behind her making it look really making her hair, her red hair glow and look like it's on fire. Awesome. Yeah, really cool shot. So she's making things thanos away. Logan is walking up to her, and it's slow as he's taking step by step, his like shirt, his suit are slowly being thanosed away piece by piece. Really cool. And now he doesn't have the shirt on. But what now? His skin starts Thanosing away a little bit by little bit, but he has that healing factor. So he's healing and it's getting Thanos away. Healing, getting Thanos away.

SPEAKER_02

He's like healing factors and she can kill him.

SPEAKER_03

Now, granted, I feel like she isn't full because she instantly Thanosed away those guards without any fucking like just instantly. I feel like in her head, in her mind, the good Gene is like kind of like holding off the full power of the Dark Phoenix so that way Logan can get close because we know what's gonna happen. Because she knows what she needs to be done, and it though again the effect of like of Logan walking forward, and you're slowly seeing parts like like tons of skin being like Thanosed away, coming back, more powers. You even there's a point where you see like the the center of his chest gets thanosed away, and all you see is the the adamantium skeleton, skeleton really cool, but it's instantly covered up because PG13.

SPEAKER_01

PG13, folks.

SPEAKER_03

It still looked really cool, and again, I just think there's this fight that Gene's having in her head to allow Logan to get close. He finally gets close, and evil Gene says, Are you here are you here to stop me for them? And he goes, No, I'm I'm here to do it for you. And just that, I don't know if it was like that line that just like got to the good in her that gave her enough strength. The a the real Jean comes forward and mind you in the second movie Logan has a nightmare about this and it's where Gene asks him to kill her, and you know, she's stabbed and she's dead in the dream. And here we're we're having callback to that same scene, except she doesn't say kill me, she says save me. Yeah, and Logan with fuck tears in his eyes, again, Hugh Jackman is so we haven't even talked about him really in this movie, besides him killing people. Hugh Jackman is so my dude can act, he's super good, crying. He goes, I love you. He goes, I love you, and stabs her and is holding her there. Really cool shot of whole of him holding her dead body and just like screams because fucking the love of his life, I don't get why, but love of his life and yeah, kills her, and it's like okay, it's it's really sad, I guess. And like we s kind of mentioned it earlier, um Professor X, Scott, and Gene are all buried next to each other now. Um and that's kind of that um of you know in the movie. Um, what'd you think of the final fight and you know Gene losing her mind and all that?

SPEAKER_02

Uh I love the f like you know, the actual like last stand they did. I was like, oh look, there's the last stand. Uh which is of you know, them just like standing in the line fighting off those people. That was sick. Uh there was like a lot of great action up to that point, and uh I really, really like the ending. Uh I like the ending enough. Again, I feel like it was um unearned. I felt like because you know with Gene. I mean, except for Logan. I mean, it was great for Logan, but not much for Gene, because like again, she really hasn't really done much emotionally for this move for these movies.

SPEAKER_03

I had to be a part of the love triangle, yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

And now she's just like, oh, she's dead now, and I don't know. Like, I don't know. Like, it's a bit like it's a bit like it felt like so rushed, and we I really don't even feel like we even got to know her to care about her that she's gone.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and I mean we we've mentioned it, we mentioned it, we've mentioned it across these three movies. This I I get that comically, like, you know, this is he's in love with her because he looks like someone from his past. But like you're not you you never mentioned that once. So I can't really take that into consideration. And it's just like uh, hey, whoa, you're attractive. And then by the end of the first movie, it's like, hey, I'm kind of in love with you, but you know, you're Scott's girl. And then let me flirt with you some more in the second movie, and you are like low-key entertaining it across the first and the second movie, even though you have a guy and then she's dead. She's not dead and now she's kills Scott. Awesome, they can be together now.

SPEAKER_00

You know what's crazy?

SPEAKER_03

They kissed Yeah, not long after, whatever. Um yeah, I don't get I I'm not on board with this whole love thing. I but again, I'm like, you give me a good performance, I'm gonna feel the emotions you want me to feel. But still, I like I'm not about it.

SPEAKER_00

All that stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Um Yeah, and then weirdly enough, this one did have a post-credit scene or mid-credit scene. Umist, Charles is alive.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Ah another twist just uh I don't Why?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I don't understop that why, but like I how it's not like she flung him into the ocean and we never heard from him again, and we just assumed he's dead. No, it's like you he dismissed him. How? How how is my question?

SPEAKER_02

How and they never explain that, they never explain how.

SPEAKER_03

I really think in the future movies they explain how I don't get it, and it's not even just like uh, hey, it's Mr. Professor or Xavier. No, it's it's literally just Moira? Because he's in like in a hospital bed, and this nurse comes in, he's like, Moira, and then she goes long pause. Charles? That's the end of the movie. Why? Why? How? I don't how are you setting this up? Like, like why are you setting it up if this is supposed to be your finale? Unless you guys thought you guys were gonna get a fourth movie. I don't know why they wouldn't get a fourth movie. I think they were I think what they might have been trying to do at this point Oh, also, I didn't know this. This movie is directed by Brett Ratner. Oh crap. That piece of shit. I've forgotten that.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, what did he do again?

SPEAKER_03

Uh he I think he tried to like cancel Algado when they were doing the first movie. Wonder Woman movie, something like that. Or maybe it was like plus the second movie. There was a movie, yeah. And now he and plus they like apparently he's like a fucking turvet or some shit. I don't know, something like that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. He was in like the fucking um Epson Files, apparently.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but this is before all that. This is like years ago, like years ago. Um but yeah, um, that's besides the point. But I I don't I think what they I'm not mistaken, I could be wrong. But I think what they were trying to do is like do their fourth movie, but like they were also gonna start doing these uh X-Men origin movies. There we so we got the Wolverine one, that's actually like the next movie they do, and that movie tanked. That movie did not do well. Yeah, the movie did not do well, and then the next movie is uh X-Men First Class. And then you know the the timelines get crazy.

SPEAKER_01

Um then it gets all wonky and stuff, things don't make a lot of things don't make any sense.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but that that was X-Men the Last Stand, uh a lot of question marks, pretty some pretty great stuff. Really, it's just like beasts, some line delivery. I did and you know that final fight. I dig I dig the the s the plot of the cure. I I dig that um and you know what I d I obviously the the Scott Summers disrespect is uh horrendous, it's disgusting. Um the death of Professor X feels uh 100% unearned. This movie feels like an hour 44 runtime with two huge stories in that of the cure thing and the dark phoenix story that you're telling. In an hour 44 movie. I grant, okay, if if you could if it could be done, it would have been done, but obviously it can't. Not saying a movie of that magnitude can't be told in hour 44, but this one's clear proof. They tried and it didn't work.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, because I here's the thing. This was two different plot because like the cure and the dark phoenix were like two different, like, you know, story arcs in the comic books. So this and like this really feels like they truly this really feels like Spider-Man 3 where they just kind of try to cram too much in it. Yeah. There's some like here's the thing. I like this movie, it has a lot of great moments, but like there's a lot of clutter in it. And it oh, it feels really like yeah, it just feels really cluttered.

SPEAKER_00

That's the that's the best way I can describe it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um I feel like this did not need the Dark Phoenix storyline. Um you kind of already hinted at it in the first, in the second movie. And to the point where like Gene knows she's powerful and she knows she has to sacrifice herself. Awesome. But if you were gonna do that in this movie, just make that be the whole center focus. Um but I think you could have gone a movie without it to really make us think she's dead, even though you kind of tease it at the end of the last movie. The last stand should have been solely just you know the the cure, the cure storyline. I think you could have benefited from her and then it kind of could have led to what let's just assume you just make this the cure movie, and then you make the next movie the dark phoenix one. Let's just assume you do that. You could do a little storyline in the fourth movie that is like, hey, um, we need more mutants, but like people cure some shit, and then it turns out because oh, also Ian McKellen, Magneto, got seemingly was getting his power back at the end of the movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, why not? Like, but then again, who knows what the direct you know, producing there's probably a bunch of mess behind the scenes.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um, with that said though, Adam, what would you give X-Men the last stand on a scale from one to ten?

SPEAKER_02

Uh give it uh I'll give it a seven. It's still I think it's still a good movie. It has a lot of flaws, but like overall, I'm still I can still watch it and be entertained, even now.

SPEAKER_03

Same. I would also give it a seven out of ten. Rotten Tomatoes has this at 56%. IMDB, it's sitting at a 6.6. Letterboxd, it's at a 2.7, and this little Google thing says 78% like to this. Um we started this last week with the I forget which movie we we talked about. We started this with. If we didn't start it last week, because I don't remember doing it for the Thor movie, we definitely did it for the one before that. Um, and that is talking about this movie's Fox Office Details. This is a new segment we're doing where we talk about how much the production budget was estimated, and how much money it totally grossed and all that stuff. Um, so Adam, what do you think the production budget was? We'll play a little guessing game.

SPEAKER_02

Production budget? Uh what was it? I think it was uh I'll go I'll give it the standard 120, 120 million.

SPEAKER_03

Production budget was an estimated 210 million dollars.

SPEAKER_00

Oof, damn, that was way off.

SPEAKER_03

I wonder if that's including the like um advertising and stuff.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And in its opening weekend, it made 102 million. That's pretty crazy because I feel like you don't see that a lot nowadays for movies. It's opening weekend 102, um, it's international. Oh, that was the opening weekend. Okay. Domestic domestically in US and Canada, it grossed about 234 million. Internationally, internationally, it grossed 226 for a grand total of 460 million. 435,291. So it more than uh made its money back. Plus, it is the highest grossing film in the franchise at the time. Yeah. Now granted, um, I forget which movies come after it in like what specific order, but this will be have been the highest grossing X-Men movie up until Days of Future Passed. Oh wow. Yeah. I'm pretty sure I mean we'll get into it when we talk about the other movies. In the future. Um yeah, that is how much movie this movie made. $460 million worldwide.

SPEAKER_01

Well I say it was deserved. I think it was still a good move in theaters for four months.

SPEAKER_03

Crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_03

A lot longer than movies get nowadays. I might have seen parts of it on like when it came out on TV.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I I think that's another thing. They they have as soon as it came like after like a couple years, I think they just like FX. You remember FX? Oh yes, I was about to say that's where I watched it. Yeah, yeah. FX just kept airing the X-Men movies for some reason. I don't know. Like they would always have like the movie they would always play would be like because they would always have one like decently like big budget, you know, like one big movie to play at play during once a week or something. And for some reason it was always just these X-Men movies, and they would play these movies. Uh I guess they had the license for back to back.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Well it was a Fox project, so I think it's on there.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, I think they just had the but like the license to them, and just like screw it, throw it on there.

SPEAKER_03

Do it too. Yes, but um made 460 million. Um which is pretty crazy, which I think is why they were just like, you know what? We can just do which I think is pretty genius in doing a movie where you're doing the origins of some heroes. Um do they all need it? No, but I don't know who else they would have done if Wolverine Origins was successful.

SPEAKER_02

I heard they were gonna do Magneto, which that makes sense. And probably perfect I heard they were gonna do Storm and Magneto. Possibly, I think they might have they were gonna do Colossus. I I don't know. I don't I don't know about the Colossus one.

SPEAKER_03

Uh it was either Colossus or Cyclops, I can't remember, but well yeah, so that was um X-Men the Last Stand. Um, as Adam called it, pretty divisive movie, guys. Um we both gave it a 7 out of 10. Um made a lot of money back, so that was really cool to see. Um overall final thoughts on the movie, Adam, before we move on from it forever.

SPEAKER_02
