What better way to celebrate a birthday than with movies about seeing beyond appearances? In this joyful episode, we dive into "Shallow Hal" (2001) and "Pitch Perfect" (2012) – two films that explore confidence, authenticity, and finding your place in the world.

First up is the Jack Black comedy "Shallow Hal," where we examine how a superficially-focused character discovers what truly matters when hypnotized to see inner beauty. We unpack Black's surprisingly nuanced performance, standout scenes like his confrontation with Rosemary's father, and the controversial aspects of the film's approach to body image. Twenty years later, does this Farrelly brothers comedy still deliver its heartfelt message, or has time changed how we receive its humor?

Our conversation shifts to the a cappella phenomenon "Pitch Perfect," with its unforgettable riff-offs and colorful cast of characters. We debate which Bella we'd befriend (Fat Amy and Cynthia Rose are strong contenders!), analyze the early 2010s fashion that still resonates today, and reveal surprising parallels between this film and "Bring It On" that you might have missed.

Both films, despite their different approaches, tackle how we connect beyond physical appearances – whether through magical intervention or the harmonizing power of music. We examine how each movie handles themes of confidence, judgment, and acceptance, leading to a deeper appreciation of what initially appear to be simple comedies.

Thank you spontaneous thank you .

Speaker 1

Thank you , I'm a smart . Did I sound already sexy ? Happy birthday , thank you . Do you think that you would be having ? I guess I should have asked before what your plans are for your birthday .

Speaker 2

What my plans are Partying , getting fucked up , partying . I have a really nerdy like birthday party in mind that I'm trying to make happen . Oh , okay , I will stay tuned for that . Yeah , you're invited Always , thank you . Yeah , I want to have a book party this year where people bring and trade their favorite books .

Speaker 1

I thought it was dress up as your favorite book but that's good too .

Speaker 2

We could do that too . We could dress .

Speaker 1

You know what I appreciate . I'm going gonna get started on that reading . It's like a bit is there a genre any exciting , exciting , exciting , good , good , good . Well , these uh two movies are perfect picks for brie's birthday's episode . We're gonna be uh reviewing pitch , perfect and shallow how should enough .

Speaker 2

Oh , because I like musicals and I like laughing at fat people .

Speaker 1

You know , it's interesting that you say that , because I know your husband loves Norbit , so I can't wait . I cannot wait for him to hear those words , that's hilarious , all right , starting with uh , shallow hell

Shallow Hal: Movie Overview

Speaker 1

.

Speaker 2

Hell takes his dying father advice and dates only the embodiment of female physical perfection . But that all changes after hell has an unexpected running with self self-help guru Tony Robinson . Intrigued by Hal's shallowness , robinson hypnotizes him into seeing the beauty that exists even in the least physically appealing women .

Speaker 1

This movie stars Jack Black as Hal , gwyneth Paltrow as Rosemary , jason Alexander as Mauricio as Rosemary . Jason Alexander as Mauricio , tim Robbins as himself , renee Kirby as Walt , susan Ward as Jill and the famous duo who do the Kyle Gas as Artie . This movie was written and directed , once again , by the Farley brothers . Farley brothers Wrote and directed by both of them . We know their work . They also did Dumb and Dumber , released in 1994 , and there's something about Mary , 1998 . So I feel I get it . I get the very yeah , of course , this is a beautiful rom-com . This movie was released in November 2001 . It had a budget of $40 million and it grossed $70.8 million domestically . That's pretty good . That is pretty good . What made you pick this movie ? I'm curious . Besides the obvious , I was a Jack Black fan .

Speaker 2

Yeah , man . Well , the obvious always jack black fan . Um , yeah , man . Well , I wanted to give you a break from my weird sci-fi movies , what I felt like my last birthday specials . I always felt , or I always picked , like sci-fi , alien stuff and but I like them okay , extracted I still talk about extracted .

Speaker 1

so good , right , and there's two extracted movies , so i'm'm like , not that one , the other one , the other one . Yeah , and you know it's interesting because we referenced it the other day when something was happening I think they were doing construction and I was like it's like an extracted when the memories yeah , and you know what . That's pretty good , because I have a pretty shitty memory . So you have great movie picks . They're interesting , they're not boring , so I know they're gonna be a good treat , but continue so you know , I just had you in mind .

Speaker 2

I wanted to keep you happy . Oh , thank you . You make me very happy . Oh , good , good , good but , I also . I just enjoy it . I think it's funny , um , I I mean , I don't know oh , I was curious .

Speaker 1

But I know we're Jack Black fans . Yeah , you know , and it is , you know , 2001 movie . So I'm like , yeah , I don't recall going to the theater to see this movie . I don't know if you did .

Speaker 2

No , I didn't . This was definitely like a cable TV . I saw it .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I'm pretty sure we went , we rented this movie and you know it was a family hit , a family hit at the home . I think it's pretty cool to see that how . You know , he's not perfect like everybody , but it's nice that he's still respectful to everyone even if they're not hot .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , the people he encounters in his day-to-day life . He still treats them respectfully , he's still polite . There was a scene where he's like at a work business meeting and I don't know if you noticed , but then he like shakes everyone's hand and the first person he shook hands with he turned to the side and it was a woman and like he shakes her hand first and then he turns to like all the other dudes and like shakes their hands . No , I didn't notice that it was . It was , I don't know a quick detail , but I noticed and then , um , like , even if people were unattractive , he would still like say hi to them and smile and , yeah , be polite be respectful .

Speaker 1

It's a good . It's a good rule of thumb . It's interesting that that was mentioned because I think there are studies that show that , you know , people do have a pretty privilege and even weight privilege , yeah , and I think people do not experience , do not notice their privilege of being thin until they probably gain weight and actually I think a girl did a youtube video about that that people like stop being nice to her at the bar , right . It was like what do you want ?

Speaker 1

yeah um , so it's , yeah , I like that . He's , especially for someone . That's literally that . You know it's being called shallow , how you know it's a good um , a good nugget to have .

Speaker 2

And I felt like he handled rejection well also , like if , if girls didn't want to go out with him . You know he , he did ask why . His neighbor Jill , you know he , she doesn't want to go out with him anymore . And he does like why , why ? And then anymore . And he's just like what , why ? And then you know she tells him like you know , like you're you just seem super superficial and I'm not into you , and he just accepts like he doesn't bother her , he doesn't hound her , he's just like move on , okay , yeah , after he broke her down without seeing her why .

Speaker 1

But you know what I feel like , what more of he have could he have said or done because she wasn't being honest with him ? Yeah , you know , and as a woman , we know why we're not honest with them .

Speaker 2

But they're across the hallway neighbors , so that could have been real creepy , real fast . I think , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

So that was what I was considering . I was like oh , like you know he's I think every woman has had that experience right , there's a guy that you don't want to go out with , or you give him a chance and you don't want to continue , so to be bothered I will use the word bothered and I think I noticed that he was pretty confident , really really confident , and I think that's what confident people have . That's what they um , exude , um , he handled it well after breaking her down and then he goes to the club with his homie .

Speaker 1

Yeah what seems to be , yeah , oh yeah , uh , every week , every weekend , every friday night and just throw , go back in the ring . You know it's a numbers game .

Speaker 2

It really , is it really ?

Speaker 1

is . It reminded me when I used , when I went to the club and it was , and it really is , mostly guys , then it is girls and it's like , yeah , so

Analyzing Hal's Confidence and Character

Speaker 1

do you think hell has game when he's approaching these ?

Speaker 1

women . I think it's about confidence . So , yeah , I think by technicality , yeah , um also he's kind of like very accommodating , like you see , how , like when . Um , I'm sorry , rosemary , you know her , on the chairs which I haven't broken a chair . I don sorry , rosemary , you know her , on the chairs which I haven't broken a chair I don't know if you've broken a chair .

Speaker 1

I've never broken a chair . My father , with his ginormous weight gain , unfortunately did break a chair . Oh yeah and um , it wasn't bad . The look on his face was the same as hers like just you knowris petrified and stuff . But I do think he has game . What about you ?

Speaker 2

I think he has game the first . Like the first day , him and Rosemary are hanging out . He defends her honor right away . They go into the . Oh no , they're walking out of the restaurant and these two guys are laughing at her and then he goes back in to tell them off and I think , even though , like he misunderstood the whole situation , but still , like it was very , I think it was very chivalrous , very , you know , I feel like a lot of people wouldn't do that , yeah . You know , especially someone . I just met you Right .

Speaker 1

I think that he thought it was him , yeah . So I feel like he gets the points for forgiving himself , like he has the confidence , he knows what he is , he knows what he isn't , which is interesting Considering that he's shallow right . He's like he's honest with himself about what he is , what he isn't , and he's still going for the tens right and like people he thought they were calling him , you know , yeah , addressing it to him and I feel like he he just exudes confidence in every way . So I don't give him points like for that . Yeah , because she us , you know the women are being like , you know he's chivalrous , but it's like , you know , it's nice to see a guy stand up for himself and not be violent .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Or aggressive , Like he did it in a confrontational way and honestly he addressed it at the root of the problem , Like even though he didn't know that she was you know big as he is , he got down to it . Hey , you know what , when you guys are alone at home , I'm gonna be with that thing .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you know that fine thing .

Speaker 1

And you know , while you guys are alone at home , yeah , and I feel like that is the end game , right , mm-hmm . So I feel I felt more , not just of the rom-com , I felt more of the rom-com , I felt more of the romance as comedy and I feel more of like the , the essence of the movie and his confidence of himself , which was very interesting , because I'm like I don't think I see that in most movies , this genuine confidence about it . I would , would you go out with him ? I would go out with him .

Speaker 2

I would go out with him if he grew out facial hair I thought you wouldn't go out with him because you kept saying how you wanted him to be your dad .

Speaker 1

That was a long time ago and that was only in Nacho Nacho Libre . That was in Nacho Libre and I think it was because he was Mexican , okay , oh yeah , so School of Rock and Nacho Libre , but I feel like I think he's a little too goofy . These are my notes . He's a little too goofy . If he grow facial hair , he'll look a little bit more older Because he still has the young look , and I don't know why . Young in the sense of Not juvenile teenage , but just the haircut wasn't age-appropriate , I feel like . I feel like facial hair is more .

Speaker 2

Well , he needed a girlfriend to like style him , style him better , buy him better clothes . Like , yeah , tell him you would look nice with a beard yeah , he needs , he needs a zendaya .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , because , because , because , yeah , her man is definitely rised up . Yeah . Yeah , as the fashion said yeah . So I guess my notes were literally facial hair a little too goofy and he's not a gamer . Oh , you want a gamer . I think I'm used to having a gamer or a musician and I think I like that . I don't know , you have your hobby , I have my hobby , I don't know .

Speaker 2

The thing that does bother me , though , is when they do show what the women actually look like . It's so exaggerated , like how ugly they are . Yeah , like they could have just used the same actress like dolled up hair , done makeup , and then when they show what she really looks like , they could have just done her like clean face Maybe , like poor posture , like more physical yeah than that .

Speaker 1

I think . I think literally all the girls were models . I think so yeah I think , so I think and and I you know the farley brothers , I mean , these are the people that made dumb and dumber . You know they're dudes that are gonna put that extra sauce on there to exaggerate , because they exaggerated the dumbness in Dumb and Dumber .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

You know . So I think it's , um , I'm glad that it wasn't like I didn't feel like it was overly done because they were switching from like .

Speaker 2

I thought , when the scene where he's like in the club , like dancing with like those four women or something , and they show what they really looked like women or something and they , they show what they really looked like I was like there's no way there's . I was like there's no way they would even be .

Speaker 1

they would let them in , like if that's what really what they look like , like that's funny this is the the funny part of it and I'm just like how is it that they're all together ? You have four ugly friends , like what , yeah ? And I'm just like and they all came in together or they all flock towards you because of the good energy , I don't know . I think those are like what is it the 4% that they let in ?

Speaker 2

They're in the 4% . If you saw me going after like some ugly overweight guy , would you stop me yeah .

Speaker 1

I would , unless it's rebound season . Unless it's rebound season . If it's a rebound season , then I'm like get it , girl . What is he saying ? Bang a few uggos . Yeah , we've all been there . You know both sides of the door . You know , just you know , and you know what I feel like sometimes people . They're just you know , you don't know what's under there . I would say something Like girl yanking out of character . This ain't you all right , girl .

Speaker 1

This ain't you ? Yeah , this ain't you ? Look in the mirror , how drunk are you ? I think it would be one of those Like you drunk girl , let's go home . I got you .

Speaker 2

Thank you , you're girl . Let's go home . I got you . Thank you , you're welcome . Have you ever been stuck in an elevator ?

Speaker 1

No , but it happened at work . One time I was working at a clinic , the firefighters were like we have 21 calls before you . Oh my God , You're going to have to wait . And it's like scary . It's like 21 calls . I wouldn't like to know that , the number of . I don't , I don't want to know the number that I am , you know , yeah , and then I was like for now on the stairs . That did not happen . That did not happen . What about you ?

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Like when my old coworker and I were in the elevator and we were jumping . You know , you know , you know , know , I'm a big bitch . All right , I'm a big bitch when you go to the next level and you jump .

Speaker 2

I've never , you've never done that . No , keep going , though it's like , yeah , like when the elevator gets to the level and you're , there's a specific you're supposed to time it right where you jump and then you feel like you're floating for a little bit , like in the air or in the elevator . Well , anyways , we were jumping and then , because we were jumping , the elevator stopped and got stuck and we were there for a long time and , uh , I had to eat her was this a cat , a fish , another woman , a child ?

Speaker 2

it's another woman . No , we were there for a long time , I don't know how long , but we were just . I mean , luckily we had our cell phones . We were on um instagram snapchat oh , man , it's .

Speaker 1

It's times like that when you don't realize how valuable it is to have your phone charged , yeah , and to have a or have a charger or a backup battery , like I , I don't have a backup battery . I used to do that , like in college . Is that something you do ? Or you had ? I used to do that , yeah . Now that you might share this story , I'm about to get another one , because that is scary . And then if you go into old buildings , they're smaller , the meters are smaller and they feel a little bit more . You know what I get most ? I'm all fucked up . I got fucking this too small . I'm scared . I'm it moves too much . I'm scared and nauseated . It's just , it's just too much . Um , did you have to those those other concerns I had ? Did you have to use the bathroom ? Were you thirsty , um ? Did she cry ? Did you cry ? No ?

Speaker 2

I well , I got scared because I thought like we were at work . So I was like , oh man , I was like I hope we don't get in trouble when they find out we were jumping in the elevator . And then she was like stupid , don't tell them . And I was just like , oh right , right , right . And then they're already turning on each other .

Speaker 1

They're already turning on each other . You're the rat , but then they finally got us out and then they're like , oh , on each other .

Speaker 2

They're already turning on each other . You're the rat . But then they finally got us out and then they're like oh , are you guys ? Okay , you guys can just take the rest of the day . So then , like , I went home like two hours early and I'm like all right , this is cool , nice .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I would have come out faking it now that I know if they could send you home , that would be nice , but I think it's funny in the movie how I don't know if you noticed , but they're sitting in the elevator talking and hell like took his pants off dude .

Speaker 1

I was like this man is so confident . He's like I'm fat and I know

Key Scenes and Body Image Themes

Speaker 1

it I'm . And I was like why is his pants off ? Like what ? It's uncomfortable to wear pants , you know what . And I think too I don't know if you get this , but sometimes when I'm anxious , I start taking off my clothes . So I'm like , damn damn . This dude started , he skipped the top , he went like straight .

Speaker 1

But yeah , that was interesting and I feel like shallow , how was like big , how is like big circular , and I feel like Tim Robbins is big , as in tall , and I'm just like damn , I don't know if I could . It's a lot of little space , there's a little space in there and it's like I don't know when he grabs his face , he's like devil , come out .

Speaker 2

He's like what the hell are you doing ? Banana hands .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and they , and , and . Since then I will look at his hands . It's like they all look like bananas , so fucking huge . That is a big motherfucker . I don't know how tall he is , but everything about him looks big .

Speaker 2

Yeah , from what we can see yeah , oh , speaking of taking your clothes off the sex scene , what when he finally has sex with rosemary ? Why does she get naked ? She gets naked first and then she gets in bed and I was like what a weird way to have sex .

Speaker 1

I don't know , that's my standout scene actually . Oh okay , I think it's funny the song that they use .

Speaker 1

I love how they're both confident together in it and , um , when he's like , what magic you met , what do you say houdini ? Yeah , that was funny . Um , but he looks so genuinely happy yeah , excited , happy like it's so dorky how he looks . He looks like his eyes are like about to fucking jump out of his fucking sockets and I thought that was funny that they use that um panty , the giant panties , the giant panties , and I always look at them and I'm just like how big are those ? Yeah , how big are those ?

Speaker 2

really well . I was watching this with my husband , who loves norbit , and he's like , ah , norbit did it better . And he was like when she jumps in . So he was like , oh , she jumps in the bed . And then the other guy's like this , and he did it .

Speaker 1

He was like , and he's like this also waiting , you know , and it's interesting because but respusha had more confidence , yeah , than rosemary . You know respusha over here dressing up , you know , every other weekend , you know throwing it down , like you know she , she knows the , the game , yeah , you know , but rosemary , you know this is a person that's growing her confidence back .

Speaker 1

Um , I feel I feel both ways . Um , maybe she had performance , um , what's the thing called anxiety ? Yeah , she's like I don't wanna . Maybe that's what I imagine , you know , and I'm thinking about what ? How could they have made it romantic ? But I don't think that the audience would have received that well , because they ain't ready for a big girl love scene , big man , big woman love scene you know , so they're just like , let's make it , make it funny .

Speaker 1

But that movie , that scene to me is very funny because it's like , so I don't know , I think it's cute , I guess is what I'm coming , yeah , coming coming around to . He's excited , she's excited and nervous and the , the chonies , the chonies give me every time they're so big .

Speaker 2

But I never really looked at guanis paltrow before and I was like she's really pretty she is they ?

Speaker 1

they did the perfect casting for her on on this one , and it's interesting because here she's tall , slender , blonde and in some there's something about mary oh yeah , slender and blonde so it's like you know it , really , it continues that , um that preference of beauty yeah .

Speaker 2

They have a type yeah , definitely , I was also going to bring up what was going on with his job . Rosemary's dad like gives him the promotion and he's like you're going to work directly for me . So Hal starts like working for him , and then him and Rosemary like go through there Like they stop talking or whatever . And then the dad calls him into his office and he's yelling at him and I'm like , well , that's awkward , Is he still your go-to guy ?

Speaker 1

Dude . This is why they say don't do it , don't fool around with people that you work with , and for some beautiful , lovely people it works out such as yourself , but it was not working out at that time for how and rosemary yeah , dude , I would be shitting my like if I was dating someone and I found out that they were my boss . Like , literally like my boss , but the top dude I don't think I would want to date , yeah , that person I don't know . Is that something you would do ?

Speaker 1

no , no , I'd be like , oh , forget this , yeah , yeah so I don't know what the fuck his job was during that rough patch and after , but it it was it was going .

Speaker 2

And then he leaves and he's like , oh , I'm gonna go with you to the peace the peace corps .

Speaker 1

He just got sworn in and I'm just don't you live with your homie . Yeah , what's going to happen ? Who's going to pay ?

Speaker 2

the rent .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and I guess this is why you get married to the boss's daughter , so your shit is cleared . Yeah .

Speaker 2

Well , you've seen this movie before obviously . But do you still like the twist that the friend who has spina bifida his girlfriend ? She's actually a young , beautiful woman when they show what she really looks like . I'm trying to remember which one's the spina bifida one , the guy who walks on his arms . Oh yeah , and he's dating this woman . He sells his company , he gets all rich and then he starts dating this woman , but when Hal sees her , she's old and ugly yeah .

Speaker 1

But she's really like this . But she looks young and hot . Right , she's in the backseat talking to . Rosemary right While they're at the gas station .

Speaker 2

They're at the gas station . The guys go out to get gas and get snacks and whatever .

Speaker 1

I mean go digger Straight up , straight up , which I feel like you know , if you become , if you are rich or you become rich , like that's just part of the game , mm-hmm , you know , and for some people that works for them , mm-hmm , but I thought that was funny . I love all of them . That they switch Mm-hmm . It's nice see that the switches of all the characters yeah of what they look like under the spell and then what they really look like , I give .

Speaker 2

I think it was good , but what did you think ? Well , I remember the first time I was like why would he be dating this old woman ?

Speaker 1

yeah , this is a movie where you gotta kind of like watch it twice .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you could keep up with the what's going on yeah , and then they show and I'm like oh , I was like , you see inner beauty , but you , she doesn't have any inner beauty .

Speaker 1

You can't and I felt kind of bad that they were associating inner like ugliness with oldness . I was like wait , hold the fuck up , there's a few old , a few old people that are still so got it .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you know , I wouldn't say morgan freeman , but some people would I also like the scene where um hell's trying to find rosemary , so he goes to the hospital where she's working and then he sees the little girl , cadence , for the first time , after he's has the spell removed and he's not hypnotized anymore and he sees her for the first time and I think Jack Black , just his facial acting . He doesn't say anything , but I was like this is so such awesome acting that he's doing and I just like what do you think he was thinking or going through his mind in that scene ?

Speaker 1

I looked at his eyes and I was like he's thinking , he's thinking what is he thinking ? And I felt like , first I felt like surprise , and then Rick , like trying to be polite , and then recognition of , of . I felt humility , yeah .

Speaker 1

That's what I felt was yeah , was coming together for it , and and I think whenever they give a lesson associated with the child , I think the child like represents innocence , I'm assuming , and so I like that they put them together to help him have , like this , I don't know , realization or humility or whatever the fuck . What do you think his facial expression was ?

Speaker 2

showing . You think his facial expression was showing . I was thinking that , okay , he sees her and realizes that this is the same little girl that he met earlier . And then I think he realizes that she's so sweet and nice but that when she grows up people are probably not gonna want to be romantic with her like the way he's been . Like that he that that he would treat her like the way he's been . Like that he that that he would treat her like the way he's been treating , not mean , but he would never consider her as a romantic partner , like because he's shallow and he feels really bad about it . I don't know if I'm reading too much into it .

Speaker 1

No , it's just true , it's making me sad . I can't believe I didn't have that thought , but I will die on this hill .

Speaker 2

I think people should marry someone hot make hot babies , make the hot babies but I think , okay , this is the person I mean . You're supposed to be attracted to them . This is the only , if you're gonna be monogamous , this is the only person you're ever gonna see naked have sex with . You should find them attractive and you know what ?

Speaker 1

that's a really good point . Yeah , and you know , I guess I didn't think about it like that , because I know people that they get freak nasty like you know they're over here like swinging and I don't know what else , threesomes and shit .

Speaker 1

So I don't know . Now I'm like , look , what does that really mean ? But I think , you know , I think that's um , unfortunately , especially when you get to a certain age , people take what they can get . But I you bring up a good point yeah , having having to . I also feel like as you get older , you know , we all go downhill and I'm like that's really hard to maintain . Yeah , also , this is this is something that I think about too like , um , people getting sued because they had facial surgery and then they had they don't find out that their partner had facial surgery . Yeah , so now they're all concerned what the kids are gonna look like , type of a thing . Um , but I think it is . I think that they go hand in hand . If you're emotionally connected , it's like , yeah , you know whatever okay , well , you already told us your standout scene .

Speaker 2

What is it ? Your standout scene ? Already told us your standout scene . What is it ? Your standout scene is when I like the dinner scene where he meets rosemary's parents and then , um , rosemary and her mom go in the kitchen and then the dad tells how , like , um , like I haven't my daughter's so big , I haven't been able to like have her sit on my lap since she was like two years old . And then how tells her dad off , and he was just like man , no wonder , like when I started dating rosemary and she told me she didn't think she was beautiful , he's like I couldn't believe my ears .

Speaker 1

And he's like , but you're the reason why yeah , he's like I've read about you overachievers , nothing's good enough for you . And my inner child was like stay , stay , stay with your chest , stay with your chest . How . And he has such a good way of like articulating himself , like I said , without getting aggressive , without being violent , and I don't know if it's because he's like the goofy chubby guy that it comes off kind of gently and not offending anyone or what . But I'm like man people because he went and took that two cents . That was a really good back and forth scene that they had together . Yeah , it's really good . And also , and then he looked at the kitchen , at rosemary , and then her ass was out so I was like .

Speaker 2

He was like that's what I like to see , yeah she did that so lizzo could run .

Speaker 1

but I do , I do like that , I do . That was a pretty good scene . Actually . I like a lot of the interactions with the family , especially at the end when he's making out with Hilda . And I thought the wife was pretty . Yeah , I liked her in that suit , I don't know . Yeah , I was like she's still attractive , yeah , so that's why I'm just like yeah , fuck it . If the mom's hot , I'm sure Rosemary's hot , take your panties off . Yeah , I like it was interesting , so I like that . The dad yeah , he did take that two cents . There's a lot of confidence going on in his character and I appreciated it .

Speaker 1

Do you know anything about this movie and the transformation of G glenn's character , rosemary ?

Speaker 2

I remember there was like controversy about her wearing a fat suit , but yeah , I'm like , I don't even .

Speaker 1

I feel like there's all these politics in it , like at the time there wasn't these movements , at at least that publicly right , because now we have the public I don't know what to say like domain to .

Speaker 2

Social media yeah .

Speaker 1

Social media we can use to to for our own voices , right , and because we didn't have that then , and that's why I say it like that , because maybe the people did want it but they just didn't have the platform , yeah , to express it . Um , so I don't , I don't know . I don't know what the argument was about for the body double . Well , there was a body , there was both . There was a fat suit and a body double and I didn't know that . I was like , oh

Behind the Scenes and Fat Suit Controversy

Speaker 1

, that , because you never see her face . So I'm like I don't know . And then you see rosemary chubby . So I'm assuming you know that it is , um , her , but the , the body double was 20 years old , she was so young , wow , her name is ivy snitzer . She's actually she's . She's really pretty , I , I , and she looks even cuter as a blonde to me . Um , they said that she .

Speaker 1

She says that she developed an eating disorder once the movie wrapped because of , like , um , but it was interesting because she did collect , she did . She was very clear on on these three things , which is number one , that she enjoyed the script and was not offended when she read it . So she did understand , like , that's nice to know that when you read it . It's not being um , taken out of context , right , it is what it was . It's a love story and it's it's confronting this , these things that probably hollywood didn't tackle as much as now at the time . Right , that was number one . Number two she had fun on set and felt that she was treated well , so I'm assuming she means she didn't get like harassed , harassed or fat shamed of that . And the last thing this is this this broke my heart . She felt pressure to lose weight once the movie was over , and I get it . There's a lot of fat jokes in there .

Speaker 1

Like I get it , I get it um , which I feel like fat jokes come and go , because it's like I'm assuming we've all been fat at one point or a time and laughed at a fat joke at another point at another time , you know , but she had a botched gastric surgery girl , yeah , but I'm happy to report that today she's out of Hollywood and married with a family .

Speaker 2

So good yeah .

Speaker 1

I'm glad she made it through . Um I I fear that a lot of people have this like this um doom that , if that they're never gonna get married or have a family because of something like weight , and I'm glad to know that you know that it isn't true and that it's especially not true for her .

Speaker 2

So that's good yeah , because they showed her from the behind . Yeah , yeah , and I did notice that , um , like I would see her like arm jiggle the arm fat yeah so I was like . I was like there's no way , that's a fat suit yeah , that's real fat right there .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , all which is it's obvious to tell who is who , because the the rosemary scenes are far away . They're not really close for you to see , and and her arms are covered with a sweater or something right , and the ones that are actually ivy . It's the pool scene . It's when she's in the car talking to the gold digger um things like that and I feel I felt like it was a funny movie . I'm sad that that happened to her , but I was . I'm glad that it wasn't the end to her , you know some people do get it .

Speaker 1

Do get it pretty bad .

Speaker 2

So that was another scene too , the pool scene , where where my husband was like , oh , is she going to jump in the pool and it's going to be empty .

Speaker 1

And I wish I would have been there , cause I would have like let's pull up the receipts as a fan of both of these films . It's just side by side yeah and I would have been like well , who came first ?

Speaker 2

oh , yeah and shallow , how walked so your norbit can run , but no and shallow how the little boy goes flying and he gets stuck in the tree , yes , from the splash . And then he was like , oh , norbit did it better , he's Respusha , jumps in the pool and all the water comes out .

Speaker 1

That is hilarious , yeah , I mean they're both funny , yeah , and I think it's funny when he's looking for . I think it's funny how the charcoal goes out like all the barbecue . That's the part that made me sad , like I know . I guess I should have been embarrassed with her , but I was like the carne asada , like the weenies , he was making hamburgers .

Speaker 2

The burger .

Speaker 1

The meats , the meats , the meats . You know it's a summer day , like you know , she just fucked up the fucking charcoal barbecue pit thingy and you know what ? Honestly , almost everyone that I know is insecure of being in a bikini and a bathing suit like men and women honestly and I'm rocking over 200 pounds right now and I'm still wear high bikinis .

Speaker 1

Really good on you , thank you . So just , you know , just do what works for you . I googled my body type and I went from there and then end of story . You know just , we all get hot girl , just go to the fucking pool what does this get on the bechdel test ?

Speaker 2

unfortunately , I think the only scene where two women talk was the car scene . Yeah , they're talking about um their boyfriends . So no , it fails yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

And then she's like she grew on him . No , he grew on her and I'm like and that guy too is pretty confident yeah so I'm really happy to see people that you know have limitations , have confidence in them to to continue with life and go from there and , lucky for him , he's a millionaire so all right , everyone . Now it's time for our newest segment popcorn or colonel . Uh , you know how sometimes we think we're just not the audience for this . Well , we turned it into a metric where we judge the accessibility of the movie .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so we're going to look at the characters in the plot to see how relatable they are to a general audience or to a specific audience . So if we think the movie can relate to a lot of people , it's a popcorn so you could pass it around and share it with the whole family . But if it's for a more specific audience , then it's a kernel . Some people like it .

Speaker 1

Some people spit it back . I put down obviously Rosemary and Hal yeah .

Speaker 2

I agree .

Speaker 1

Are they relatable ? Yes , I think so too , Are they attractive ? I ? Think so I think so he just needs some hair gel . Yeah , he needs some hair gel some different clothes . He's attractive . Are they funny ? Yeah , charming ? Yes , I think so too . Do they evoke sympathy or empathy ? Yes , I think so .

Speaker 2

I think especially the scene like after their first date .

Speaker 1

And then she was like , oh , even if you never call me again , like thank you for tonight yeah , yeah , man , or when he first sex her out and she's like why that should make me so sad . Yeah , are there stakes ? Of the heart , his job and the peace corps are the characters in jeopardy . I'm gonna have to say no girl , no Of the heart , his job and the Peace Corps Are the characters in jeopardy .

Speaker 2

I'm going to have to say no girl .

Speaker 1

No , is the conflict interesting ? Say yeah , yeah , is the topic relevant ? True love .

Speaker 2

True love . I was thinking more like your self-image or how you see confidence .

Speaker 1

Yeah , that's a good . That's a good . So I genuinely don't think it's just a rom-com . Like you know , it's a popcorn . Next up for review Pitch Perfect .

Pitch Perfect: Plot and Characters

Speaker 2

College student Becca knows she does not want to be part of a clique , but that's exactly where she finds herself after arriving at college , Thrust in amongst mean gals , nice gals , just plain weird gals . Becca finds that the only thing they have in common is how well they sing together zone of traditional arrangements and into the world of amazing harmonic combinations in a fight to the top of the collegiate music competitions .

Speaker 1

This movie stars Anna Kendrick as Becca , rebel Wilson as Fat , amy , brittany Snow as Chloe , anna Camp as Aubrey , skylar Aston as Jessie , adam Devine as Bumper , esther Dean as Cynthia and Ben Platt as Benji . This movie is directed by Jason Moore . We know him as the director of Sisters Tina Fey and oh , okay , amy Poehler . Amy Poehler , thank you . And Shotgun Wedding 2023 . I think that's the one with J-Lo from Amazon . I've never seen it . Let's not If it's the one I'm thinking . This movie was written by Kate Cannon . They also wrote Pitch Perfect 2 and they also directed and wrote Cinderella . The 2021 release , and I'm pretty sure that sounds like the Cabela Cabello . Yes , the live action , the flop , yep . This is a musical comedy romance . It was released in October 2012 . It had a budget of $17 million and it grossed over $115 million . Well , it said worldwide I wanted the fucking domestic , but I guess it was a such a success . This movie has so many things in it , so many things in it . Um , where do you want to start , pretty girl ? I don't know . Okay , what's your ?

Speaker 2

standout scene . I don't know . Okay , what's your standout scene ? My standout scene is the end performance , the end competition .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I like that . That is such a good transition man . If Michael Bay did that , I don't know . I'm curious about directors with their specific niche . You know like , how would they have done it , Because I feel like he does a good . I know people make fun of it , but I think it's a good .

Speaker 2

They'd be explosions , they'd be pyro .

Speaker 1

That filter .

Speaker 2

Pyro techniques . You think the music is over , but then you hear a computer , no , a piano , yep .

Speaker 1

No , yeah , it didn't . That's not what it gave , but that's the feeling that it gave .

Speaker 2

You know what I mean , yeah .

Speaker 1

It's over , but it's not really over . Yeah , yeah , that's what I made me feel like on the edge of my seat .

Speaker 2

You know , my standout seat is the riff off the first one that they have .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and I want to let you guys know that riff off , riff off is an improv game and it is my favorite improv game I love this game so much . When I was really trying to hit it hard as an improv actor , I asked my fiance and his best friend to play with me to just get the juices going . Get the juices going like don't , don't , don't get rusty , don't get rusty and it would be the three of us playing this game , and I enjoy it every time I don't think we played it together .

Speaker 2

We have played it . It was actually you , me and anthony again .

Speaker 1

Yeah , so you see how much I love and okay . Okay , now that you've played it , is it fun it ?

Speaker 2

is fun , but it's hard , I think , especially because there's only three of us . Yes , I think if there was more people , because on the spot I get stuck .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and let me tell you guys something when you play this game , acting is all about commitment . So if you don't even know if you're singing , you know happy birthday and you forget the words to happy birthday and you only know the , the chorus , your ass continues to sing whatever fucking part of the song that you know . So it's commitment until someone taps you out . Not not like this with these beautiful , talented , you know musicians that obviously know the words , know the keys , know the tempo , like that is I . I don't think I I cannot compete with with this level , but at a very , uh , beginner level , it's a fun game . So I'm glad that you liked it . But , yeah , I can't hear where you're . I can't hear where you're coming from . It's definitely , I think , when I play with bigger groups . Maybe this is my problem . Um , the . It's not that it is a problem , but it's like people will like tap in tap in tap in tap in , tap in like you have people that are really musically connected and and prepared lyrically .

Speaker 2

So so do you agree with the judgment that the word was it and she's saying it's so ? They were , they were cut off .

Speaker 1

You know , I think when you have like top a groups like this , you do I think so I think if it's just us fucking playing , yeah , whatever , fuck it .

Speaker 1

But with these people that are like , uh , prepping to compete and you have , I even like how the stoners like jumped in , jumped in , even if it was for a bit like the community is alive and well and it it's a great um image to put what college is like for for people that engage in the activities but I was watching it and she's singing and then everyone looks all confused and I'm like this black girl doesn't know the words , to no diggity okay , honestly , did you know it was no diggity when white ass becca was ?

Speaker 1

I don't want to it . Well , it wasn't rapping , reciting reciting . She was talk singing I don't know she was doing that white talk singing they were doing in the 1940s , 50s . Yes , yeah , that's . I want to say that that's why I had . I did not understand the song .

Speaker 2

Now , I'm not a black woman , but I would assume that once she heard the words , she would know what it was I I imagine that she did not recognize it because of the the lack of flow of that flavor yeah , the lack of flavor she was that was lost from the song and then why was it the fucking white australian fat amy ? She's the one . She was the first one to jump in because that bitch is down .

Speaker 1

She understood the , the lack of sauce . She , she's perfect because she was right in the center . She was like let's mayo this bitch up . Yeah , and I love her as a performer because she'll like go the extra mile . Yeah , she touches her boobs . I'm like man , I miss that . Put me back in the right coach . But since we're on that , which Bella would you be friends with ? Oh , fat Amy . Dude , I wrote down all of them , oh , because , but my faves would definitely be Fat Amy and Cynthia Rose , I think . I think the three of us would have the funnest time .

Speaker 2

The four of us would have the funnest time ever , Because what I think , Becca , she's too angsty , too angry . She was like I'm too cool for she got that privilege anger . Yeah , Like , oh my daddy pays for everything .

Speaker 1

And he , I'm imprisoned .

Speaker 2

Whatever , fuck youubrey , she was way too uptight . Dude , dude .

Speaker 1

I was like nah , you're not fun at all I was like girl , you need to get your stomach like yeah you need to relax . I was like you need to fast , then bitch , if you can't hold it down chloe seemed cool .

Speaker 2

She's down for the shower sex . You know know what I think she's ?

Speaker 1

bi . Maybe Because I'm like that's a little too confident . A little too confident , I don't know .

Speaker 2

And then that Asian girl , she's too quiet , hanameli , yeah .

Speaker 1

I was like no thanks .

Speaker 2

No thanks , girly . So yeah , I think Fat Amy is my top choice , and then Khloe .

Speaker 1

There you go , there you go , there you go . Oh okay , yeah , I can see you hanging out with both of them , but I , yeah , and I feel all of them . What about um stacy , stacy , the hoe stacy ?

Speaker 2

I can't keep up . She's too . She's too much of a hoe . She's too much of a flirt .

Speaker 1

It's too much yeah , I think it's funny . Which this is . This shouldn't be funny , but I think it's because it's coming from women , like when they're

Riff-Off Scene and Singing Competition

Speaker 1

all in chaos with the vomiting . Um , you know , cynthia rose grabs . What's her name ?

Speaker 2

stacy's boobs oh yeah , stacy's so she's blowing the rape whistle .

Speaker 1

Didn't notice I did , I was like oh my gosh , I thought it's , I thought it was hilarious . Well , cynthia rose is , is , she's a , she's written for , like rihanna , yeah , yeah , she's a real top artist and I like that . They put her stuff in there and she was in here . I think that's pretty fucking cool . I wonder what the auditions like were like yeah , so I don't know . Okay , so look , I got one for you . Okay , this film has five . Bring it on similarities .

Speaker 2

Bring on . Okay , you ready , okay , okay , let's go wait . I'm gonna guess , I'm gonna guess you want to guess them ?

Speaker 1

all right , let me read them to myself . I think two of them you for sure are gonna get I think one of them I don't think people noticed go well , it's a competition .

Speaker 2

They're going to the finals , semifinals , whatever . Yeah , I actually didn't write that one , but yeah , oh , uh , all female . Yeah , I don't know what competitors . Yeah , um , that's all I got .

Speaker 1

My first one is that you have a character that doesn't want to be there , so and bring it on you have missy uh-huh that wants to do gymnastics but , she can't .

Speaker 1

And then you have Becca , who wants to be a DJ , but she can't . Yeah , so she's singing the audition montage , oh . And so they sing in Pitch Perfect . They sing Since You've Been Gone , and then , you know , in , bring it On . They just they have the hoe , you know , and bring it on . They just they have the hoe , you know , with her own song , how and I think you mentioned this kind of like . They have to learn a whole new routine . Hey , mickey , you're so fine . Plays in both of the songs in the films . Yeah , it does in . Uh , bring it on . It's at the end and then for I forgot where it- comes out in Pitch Perfect .

Speaker 1

Let me find it .

Speaker 2

Oh , the riff off , they sing it . Okay , there you go .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and the last one . I don't think anyone's going to remember this one , but I got lucky because the week before I did the video , watching Bring it On was on for free , so I was like put it on . So in Bring it On you have the main characterrence and her interest , cliff , and then in this movie you have becca and her interest , which ends up being uh , jesse so in bring it on .

Speaker 1

Torrence sees cliff , she spies on him by accident playing guitar , and then when he notices her watching , he intentionally plays the guitar . And and you tell me if I'm reaching girl , because , jesse , when they and pitch perfect , when they arrive on move-in day , um , cliff , and I'm sorry , uh , jesse and becca notice each other in the taxi , he's in the taxi and he's playing air guitar , but when he notices becca watching , he plays for her and then sings in the taxi . And I was like what is it with these dudes that just want to play ? And it's coming back , I'm sorry to say to the Barbie bit , oh yeah , birthday bitches coming together . I'm on to you , motherfuckers , I'm on to you Well it's way more dorky that he's playing air guitar .

Speaker 2

He's going .

Speaker 1

But she like that shit . She liked that shit . This , this , I'm catching on since we , since we've , since I'm on a mission . I'm on a mission because it's being depicted in films and I'm not even noticed , it's not even it's not even noticeable , like I feel like Barbie once again brought the . The brought another layer of what the men are doing and we didn't even and we're fine . Yeah , so they were making fun of us , but it's true , because I caught it um pennies dropped , okay , but honestly , did you , do you feel like I'm reaching , since I since ?

Speaker 2

I found those two no that's good .

Speaker 1

That's good , all right , all All right . So those are my five similarities , and I was just so excited to bring them to the table , and so I was like , and they're also like forbidden lovers .

Speaker 1

Exactly so . I'm like you know this is . I was like who's watching ? Bring it On and then taking the premise of taking a plot . Let's just rework this , yeah . Instead of bring it on and then taking the premise of taking a plot . Let's just rework this , yeah . Instead of cheerleaders , they're singers , yeah , and they're not in high school , they're in college , which I kind of do like that , I guess , now that I'm an adult , I do like the adult , like um perspective on it .

Speaker 2

I don't know I also think it's it's more true to the way they look like trying to cast high school kids like they don't look like that yeah yeah , yeah , I think so and also it's kind of like I'm an adult that wishes that they pursue cheering , cheerleading .

Speaker 1

So it's kind of like to see movies of people that are in college , that are still doing stuff and and I bring that up because you have the older graduates at the end that , um , you know , are like just because we graduated , and I'm like like , oh my God , that's going to be me . No , it's not going to be you . I just thought that was hella funny and that's just . This movie had a lot of funny scenes , had a lot of funny scenes .

Speaker 2

You know what I also liked ? That all the girls had like individual personalities , yes , and then there was a another montage scene where they're they think it's over , like they're out of the competition , and then they get the phone call that they're oh , that other team got disqualified , so we're all coming back . So they um , I think aubrey calls all the girls one by one and you see what they're all doing outside of um the acapella singing , like they all have a life right , right , and I and I like that about them .

Speaker 2

Yeah , nobody , no , nobody was a sad bitch at home yeah , and then it was funny too , because then they show chloe in the hospital . She had her surgery , her nose , her nose and at first I was like she has two cell phones . She had her ipod .

Speaker 1

It was her little ipod dude yeah , whenever ipod pops on , I'm like there goes that dinosaur piece . Yeah , dude , I can't , I can't . I have you seen one recently in real life ? No , dude , it looks exactly like what it is a fucking old piece of fucking technology , all bulky and shit oh , but I miss my ipad .

Speaker 2

My ipad , my ipod , I wish I still had it .

Speaker 1

You know what I ? Um . I'm sure if you go to the thrift stores or , like , to the pawn shops , you'll find one . Um . I do think it's convenient for the phone to everything to be in the phone , but I feel like the phones aren't built to last you know they're burning out , and I'm at a point now , instead of when I couldn't afford the iPod , I would get those USB ones .

Speaker 2

Yeah , did you ever have those ? Yeah , the little MP3s , there you go , yeah , so , but this came out 2012 . I'm stuck in this time because I was like everything that Becca is wearing , I want all her outfits .

Speaker 2

You do , yes , you do wow

Comparing to Bring It On and Closing Thoughts

Speaker 2

that was she had like the stripes , black and brown sweater and I was like cute , it's cute , I want it . She was wearing like just like little tank tops . Adore adorable . And even the other girls too , like one of them , like Aubrey she . She was wearing some yellow pants . I was like I want them .

Speaker 1

Oh yeah , and then she wears plaid . I see that I can see a lot of that . I don't feel like I'm a fashionable person so I try , but I think she did . I like her . I think that dark makeup and the outfits really do . Yeah , she's giving kind of like a punk look , kind of I like it . She looks good .

Speaker 2

And her hair too . I was like her hair is cute , Like I wish I could do my hair like that , yeah , but she had like a nice thick head of hair she does .

Speaker 1

She has pretty good hair . I'm trying to see what else she was wearing because , all I can think of is the uniform of the .

Speaker 2

Bella's , and then she had like some double button jacket . I don't know . She was cute , everything she was wearing .

Speaker 1

It was cute yeah , I'm feeling like her personality a lot , a lot of punk punkish . I don't know who this is . Yeah , she has , oh , the becca . Look , they have it for halloween . It's , uh , black jeans , a blue button up is that a denim button up , denim button up , a white tank top and some flat .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's exactly what I would wear . Are you comfortable in flats ? Yeah , I wear flats all the time .

Speaker 1

This is where we differ , because I can be comfortable in a thong and you can be comfortable in flats . Yeah , she has a pretty cool look , a really cute look . Oh , converse , there you go . Converse , there you go . Simple , yeah , I feel like this time was simpler , but I could be wrong also , where do you go now to shop for this ? You can't forever 21's closing .

Speaker 2

But they don't even make clothes like this , no more . Like I feel , like the style is it's not . Yeah , it's not there anymore . Because I tried , I I went as soon as this movie was over , I went on amazon and I was like googling , like oh , striped sweater on and everything is like oversized baggy .

Speaker 1

And I think they mentioned this a lot on the internet Like when Latinas wear plaid , we look cholalicious , yeah , you know . So it's like what about plaid you don't like to wear ?

Speaker 2

plaid ? I do , but yeah , then I feel like a chola . What about plaid ?

Speaker 1

You don't like to wear plaid ? I do , but yeah , then I feel like a chola . You know a lot of the looks of that kind of have like a scarf with it , oh no yeah .

Speaker 2

Scarf and boot . That's probably the only thing I wasn't not into . I feel like a dog .

Speaker 1

I'm wearing a scarf . A sexy dog that . I would like to take out to dinner . Okay , yeah , I think dinner . Okay , yeah , I think um , I had a hard time but I feel like , yeah , it's , it's easier to put together like tight jeans , tank top or band t , like a plaid , yeah sweater button up to wear loose or a tank top .

Speaker 2

A plus to the to the stylist but I just feel like that was what was popular , like they probably just went to the mall and grabbed whatever . Now it's time for the reverse bechdel test .

Speaker 1

What does this get on the ?

Speaker 2

bechdel test . Okay , so since this is a female cast , we do the reverse , so we're looking at the male characters .

Speaker 1

It passes not only once , not only twice , but three times okay , be honest , was this one of the reasons why you picked the movie ?

Speaker 2

no , okay , great I was like damn , this girl . I didn't even well , not until I was watching it , and I was like all right , but it's um , the two guys , jesse and Benji , they have three scenes together where they're talking about acapella perfect , you know , okay , and I gotta ask do you think , do you think any of these guys are cute , do you think Jesse's cute ?

Speaker 2

I seen him in another movie where he was like like the nerd and I can't unsee it like he played it too well . So even like watching him in this movie , I still find him just kind of nerdy .

Speaker 1

I like him better with facial hair , and he used to be married in real life to the actress that plays , aubrey oh , I don't know if you knew that I didn't know that . Yeah , Okay . What do you think about Bumper Adam Devine .

Speaker 2

No , no , I actually find you watch Workaholics . Yeah , I like the curly haired guy . Yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

Wow , I think I like him a little bit better . Bumper like him a little bit better . Uh , a bumper , but okay , blue eyes , blue eyes . For me it's a little scary , I don't know , not too piercing , but okay , what about benji the magician ?

Speaker 1

no , he's , he gives little bro vibes yeah , you know , and he's cute , but I don't , yeah , I don't think he's hot , he's still , he's still a little strength . Bang , all right , everyone . Now it's time for our newest segment popcorn or colonel . Bang , bang , mm-hmm . All right , everyone . Now it's time for our newest segment Popcorn or Colonel . So for the main characters , I wrote down Becca and Jessie . What do you think ?

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Okay , are they relatable ? Yes , what are you relating ? I'm just kidding , wow , I'm just kidding . I'm just kidding . I didn't her eyes popped out college .

Speaker 2

Love it's love . I know it's love , wow , okay , no , no , I don't relate what do you relate ?

Speaker 1

I'm just kidding . I'm so sorry . I love you and happy birthday , thank you . Thank you . Are they attract ? Are they attractive ? I think we established , yeah , one of one . Do you find ?

Speaker 2

him attractive . What did you with facial hair ? Yeah , okay you know .

Speaker 1

So I think , yeah , he's good looking . Um , are they funny ? Yeah , I find them funny . Are they charming ? Yeah , I just got a fucking air guitar , motherfucker . Do they evoke sympathy or empathy ? I don't think so .

Speaker 2

I mean , there's nothing sad going on .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I mean what's-her Wanted to make a big deal out of the fucking . What is it Not being in the competition ? But , she doesn't count because she's not Becca . Are there stakes ? I don't think so . Are the characters in jeopardy ? No , is the conflict interesting ? What's the conflict ? Right , and then is the conflict interesting . What's the conflict Right ? Right , and then is the topic relevant . The topic is love . Okay .

Speaker 2

What do you think ? I'm trying to figure out what the topic is . I guess being yourself , be true to yourself , be true to yourself , be true to yourself .

Speaker 1

Is it hard work ?

Speaker 2

Romance , musical I think or accept new , be open to new opportunities . I think there we go Okay .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Because Becca didn't want to um make friends and her dad kind of forced her . So it's like , okay , you , once you open , your , once you put yourself out there , you can , you know , you create these bonds yeah , you know what ?

Speaker 1

I think it's a good point . Yeah , oh girl , what are we gonna do ? It's in , it's in the middle , it's in the middle oh no .

Speaker 2

Well , no , I would say , it leans more kernel , because not everybody likes musicals .

Speaker 1

Oh , that's a good point . That is a good point . Yeah , okay , pitch , perfect . This is a certified fresh , 81% on the tomato meter . What do you rate this film ?

Speaker 2

Okay , I only have one major problem with this movie , and it was in the beginning what Chloe had said that they only sing songs made famous by women . And in the final performance they were singing Was it Bruno Mars ? Oh yeah , and then don't you ? Yeah , oh yeah . So I was like I wish they would have just kept it like female , female singers honestly .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and I feel like that's definitely doable . Bitch , if you want an all-female singer , do fucking that whitney houston song that she did . That was originally dolly pardons . Even dolly says that's witness song , yeah , you know . So it's like there's so many . Especially if you're in a college team , like bitch , you better be hitting those fucking notes , you know but that's my only problem .

Speaker 2

But other than that , I give it a 10 out of 10 , perfect what do you ?

Speaker 1

I give it an 8 out of 10 , but I guess it should be a 10 out of 10 because this is my only , my only two cents . It's a little too cheesy and the reason I say that is because , as a person that performs in this realm , it's a little too real . Okay , it's a little too real . I'm like you got old performers coming back . You got people vomiting up in here . You got , you know , people getting a little too close up in here . You got , you know , horniness for the other team . Um , you know , you got people being excluded , like you you have . It was a lot of people . And then these , these riff-offs that they're having in the middle of the night , um , and the fight that they have with the older guy , and I was like you know , it's just a little . A little too real . The .

Speaker 1

The artist is too accurate in imitating this , but honestly , it really is a 10 out of 10 , it's just a little too real . The artist is too accurate in imitating this , but honestly , it really is a 10 out of 10 because it does make me laugh . It's just funny . I get excited with the riff off and now I want to do a riff off . So , all right , shallow Howl , okay . So this gets a 49% on the Tomatometer Very surprising . What do you rate that film ?

Speaker 2

I mean I pick both of them . I also give this a 10 out of 10 .

Speaker 1

There you go , there you go . I give this one also an 8 out of 10 , as I did Pitch Perfect before only because I feel like it's a movie of its time , like I don't think all the fat jokes land now . I don't know , I don't think all the all the fat jokes land now , um , I don't know , I don't know , but I think maybe it has something to do with like , um , maybe the audience being the audience for it , I'm not sure what .

Speaker 2

What fat jokes did you dislike ? I think I'm trying to think that's a good question is it like when they're being mean , like there's one part where he calls her a rhino ?

Speaker 1

that is fucked up . You know what I didn't ? I didn't even write specifically , I just put that it's a movie of its time and I didn't . I wasn't really specific with it . Um , I will , I will . It will be a 10 out of 10 by default , and then it's like a jack black movie . So I feel like whenever it's a jack black movie , it's like oh , you put it on . You know , it's pretty good .
