Matthew Lesson 01: Introduction to Matthew
This sermon is an introduction to the Gospel of Matthew. We will work through a verse-by-verse study of the gospel, holding the second chapter in reserve for our services in December.
The word "Gospel" is in the title of the first four books of the New Testament, and it means "good news." Each gospel has a unique perspective and is directed toward a different audience, ensuring that we have the fullest picture of Jesus' life possible within the limitations of literature.
The theme of Matthew is "God with us," or Immanuel. It opens with preparation for discipeship and ends with the Great Commission. It addresses loneliness (humanity's need for connection with God) and moral center (a mission from Him). It was written for the church, likely between 70-80 AD.
