Matthew 9:14-17 is the text for this sermon entitled, "Fasting and New Wineskins."

John’s disciples come to Jesus to ask important question. They realized he was the source for answering
their religious question. The practice of fasting was important in Judaism, and John’s disciples were in the habit of practicing it. They wanted to know why Jesus and his disciples did not.

Jesus' answer is surprising--He ties fasting with the concept of mourning. He speaks of a metaphor of the joy in a bridegroom who is present with the guests, so mourning will await a time in the future when things will change. He follows with two additional metaphors - patches on clothing and wine in wineskins. Curtis discusses the meaning of Jesus' answer along with the application to us today.
