Sometimes we as"},{"startTime":310.77,"endTime":314.57,"body":"photographers make photography harder than what it needs"},{"startTime":315.76,"endTime":319.6,"body":"to be, you know, but when we think back to"},{"startTime":319.68,"endTime":323.36,"body":"when we were children and that might be"},{"startTime":323.36,"endTime":327.08,"body":"some of the most fun you've ever had with a camera. You were"},{"startTime":327.08,"endTime":330.6,"body":"using probably something that was like a disposable camera, or"},{"startTime":330.6,"endTime":333.36,"body":"today maybe it's something just like a phone."},{"startTime":334.48,"endTime":338.04,"body":"You know that the reason why these"},{"startTime":338.04,"endTime":341.68,"body":"tools are fun is because it's. There's a level"},{"startTime":341.68,"endTime":345.52,"body":"of freedom that you get from the simplicity. You're not worrying about"},{"startTime":345.52,"endTime":349.06,"body":"aperture, you're not worrying about autofocus, you're not"},{"startTime":349.06,"endTime":352.7,"body":"worrying about the things that make a photo, you know,"},{"startTime":352.94,"endTime":356.7,"body":"quote, unquote, perfect. What you're doing is"},{"startTime":356.78,"endTime":360.34,"body":"enjoying the experience. And then photography is just a layer"},{"startTime":360.34,"endTime":363.74,"body":"on top of the experience in and of itself. And"},{"startTime":364.14,"endTime":367.34,"body":"that's the point of this, right? Sure,"},{"startTime":367.66,"endTime":371.38,"body":"you can use a camera to build a"},{"startTime":371.38,"endTime":374.94,"body":"business, to capture somebody's wedding day, like really big"},{"startTime":374.94,"endTime":378.62,"body":"moments. But you can also use a camera to"},{"startTime":379.56,"endTime":383.32,"body":"enhance your own life, enhance the experience that you are having."},{"startTime":383.96,"endTime":387.8,"body":"And it's not just, you know, the, the camera"},{"startTime":387.8,"endTime":391.08,"body":"and the photography isn't the goal in and of itself."},{"startTime":391.88,"endTime":395.68,"body":"So in that essence, it's like going back to being a kid again and"},{"startTime":395.68,"endTime":398.12,"body":"just shooting for the fun of it."},{"startTime":399.48,"endTime":402.48,"body":"I just said this a few minutes ago. The more you shoot today, the better"},{"startTime":402.48,"endTime":406.04,"body":"of a photographer you will be tomorrow. I don't say"},{"startTime":406.28,"endTime":410.12,"body":"the more perfect shots you get today, the better of a photographer"},{"startTime":410.12,"endTime":413.74,"body":"you'll be. Tomor I said the more you shoot today, the meaning"},{"startTime":413.74,"endTime":416.74,"body":"there is shoe more, think"},{"startTime":417.3,"endTime":420.9,"body":"less, right? Worry less about all of the"},{"startTime":422.18,"endTime":425.94,"body":"tiny micro decisions that you have to make in photography to"},{"startTime":425.94,"endTime":429.38,"body":"what would you know, make a quote unquote perfect image"},{"startTime":429.54,"endTime":433.06,"body":"and just take the shot. You can always take a shot,"},{"startTime":433.62,"endTime":437.3,"body":"look at it and then reassess. I'm the kind of person"},{"startTime":437.3,"endTime":440.87,"body":"I'm that I've been learning when I"},{"startTime":441.03,"endTime":443.87,"body":"look at a scene in front of me, I can get an idea of the"},{"startTime":443.87,"endTime":446.71,"body":"photo that I want to take. And I will take the photo. I'll look at"},{"startTime":446.71,"endTime":450.51,"body":"the photo and say that doesn't work. And then I will retake the"},{"startTime":450.51,"endTime":453.51,"body":"photo in a different way. But sometimes just looking at it with my two,"},{"startTime":454.39,"endTime":457.11,"body":"you know, eyes, I don't"},{"startTime":458.07,"endTime":461.83,"body":"see it in the same way that I would until I actually"},{"startTime":461.83,"endTime":465.63,"body":"see the image itself, right? Sometimes it's because you have an ultra"},{"startTime":465.63,"endTime":469.39,"body":"wide lens on your camera. Sometimes it's more telephoto, sometimes it's just"},{"startTime":469.39,"endTime":473.09,"body":"the way that it's framed. There's something that, when"},{"startTime":473.09,"endTime":476.37,"body":"it's within the confines of the image itself,"},{"startTime":478.21,"endTime":482.05,"body":"make potential issues or a composition just stand out"},{"startTime":482.05,"endTime":485.33,"body":"better and then you can dive in from there, right? So again,"},{"startTime":485.73,"endTime":488.69,"body":"shoot more, think less, don't try to capture the perfect image"},{"startTime":489.25,"endTime":493.09,"body":"first. Just capture an image and then work towards"},{"startTime":493.09,"endTime":496.93,"body":"getting better every time you take a shot, you know,"},{"startTime":496.93,"endTime":500.39,"body":"so. But point is, keep it as"},{"startTime":500.39,"endTime":504.19,"body":"simple as possible, right? It's those first steps that can"},{"startTime":504.19,"endTime":507.79,"body":"make photography so much fun. So in my own"},{"startTime":507.79,"endTime":511.31,"body":"life, here's how I do it, right? Because I need this level"},{"startTime":511.39,"endTime":515.19,"body":"of checking out and not taking it so"},{"startTime":515.19,"endTime":518.75,"body":"seriously for it to be lots of fun. So"},{"startTime":519.47,"endTime":522.71,"body":"I have this maybe you've heard me talk about on the podcast before. It's the"},{"startTime":522.71,"endTime":526.35,"body":"Sony TX20 point and shoot camera. It came out"},{"startTime":526.35,"endTime":529.87,"body":"in 2012, right? It's just a point and shoot camera. That's it."},{"startTime":530.07,"endTime":533.75,"body":"It's amazing. It boots up crazy fast. It is waterproof,"},{"startTime":533.75,"endTime":537.03,"body":"it is dustproof, it is shockproof, it is"},{"startTime":537.19,"endTime":540.87,"body":"freeze proof. Yeah. And you can turn it on"},{"startTime":540.95,"endTime":544.71,"body":"and within 1, 2, 3, you can take a"},{"startTime":544.71,"endTime":547.67,"body":"photo, right? And then you just close it back up"},{"startTime":548.71,"endTime":552.47,"body":"or turn off the camera and then you just put it away. And that three"},{"startTime":552.47,"endTime":555.83,"body":"seconds is with a full flash. If I turn off flash, I can easily take"},{"startTime":555.83,"endTime":559.3,"body":"a photo within like a second and a half of just sliding down the front"},{"startTime":559.3,"endTime":563.06,"body":"cover, take the photo and then covering it up and then being done again."},{"startTime":563.7,"endTime":567.22,"body":"That to me is fun, right? I use this"},{"startTime":567.22,"endTime":570.82,"body":"camera when I go"},{"startTime":570.82,"endTime":574.1,"body":"to concerts or like an outing with a family, or"},{"startTime":574.98,"endTime":578.78,"body":"a fun day, like in a new location where I don't want to bring a"},{"startTime":578.78,"endTime":582.02,"body":"full camera. This is the camera that I bring when I want to be"},{"startTime":582.42,"endTime":586.11,"body":"present. And being present is"},{"startTime":586.27,"endTime":590.07,"body":"more important than the photos that I capture. Right. I know that that"},{"startTime":590.07,"endTime":593.83,"body":"sounds, you know, sacrilegious, you know, to a"},{"startTime":593.83,"endTime":597.27,"body":"photographer, but when we're talking about"},{"startTime":597.27,"endTime":600.99,"body":"introducing more fun into your photography, that's the way that"},{"startTime":601.07,"endTime":604.47,"body":"I do it. It's just. It's snapshots, right? It's elevated"},{"startTime":604.47,"endTime":608.27,"body":"snapshots. You can just open it up, compose a quick frame,"},{"startTime":608.27,"endTime":611.51,"body":"see something interesting, get it high, get it low, whatever you want to do, take"},{"startTime":611.51,"endTime":615.23,"body":"the shot and then you're done. Back to being present with"},{"startTime":615.23,"endTime":618.61,"body":"your friends, with you. Keep going. Now,"},{"startTime":618.61,"endTime":622.41,"body":"sometimes you go out and you're not expecting for an event"},{"startTime":622.41,"endTime":626.09,"body":"like a concert or something like that. Sometimes the day just"},{"startTime":626.25,"endTime":629.73,"body":"evolves into something bigger than what it was. For"},{"startTime":629.73,"endTime":633.33,"body":"example, earlier this summer we"},{"startTime":633.33,"endTime":637.09,"body":"had went downtown Indy, I think, to just go to the mall or"},{"startTime":637.09,"endTime":640.17,"body":"something like that. But while we were out there, we're like, hey, why don't we"},{"startTime":640.33,"endTime":643.81,"body":"take a nice walk along the beautiful walking"},{"startTime":643.81,"endTime":647.37,"body":"path and the canal. It's a"},{"startTime":647.37,"endTime":651.03,"body":"beautiful day. Let's do that. I didn't bring my point and shoot camera"},{"startTime":651.03,"endTime":654.07,"body":"cause I wasn't expecting anything like that to happen. I thought we were just going"},{"startTime":654.07,"endTime":657.59,"body":"to go do something quick, but I did have my phone. So"},{"startTime":657.83,"endTime":661.11,"body":"in a situation like that, I have an app on my phone called"},{"startTime":661.11,"endTime":664.75,"body":"Huji. Think of it like Fuji, but with an"},{"startTime":664.75,"endTime":668.35,"body":"H. And what it is, is. I mean, it is. It is"},{"startTime":668.35,"endTime":671.99,"body":"dead simple. It looks like a disposable camera, right? If you're"},{"startTime":671.99,"endTime":675.63,"body":"looking on YouTube right now, the app just looks like a disposable"},{"startTime":675.63,"endTime":679.23,"body":"camera. You can open up the viewfinder and then have a better"},{"startTime":679.23,"endTime":682.61,"body":"clearer, but that's it. There's no zoom, there's no"},{"startTime":682.85,"endTime":686.49,"body":"Effects. There's no. Nothing like that. You just open it"},{"startTime":686.49,"endTime":689.57,"body":"up, you take the photo, and then you're done."},{"startTime":690.21,"endTime":693.89,"body":"And it creates this visual aesthetic similar"},{"startTime":693.89,"endTime":697.53,"body":"to a disposable camera. So I do like that it doesn't"},{"startTime":697.53,"endTime":701.21,"body":"just feel like another phone photo, because anybody can take a phone"},{"startTime":701.21,"endTime":704.93,"body":"photo. But also, these aren't necessarily photos that I'd want to"},{"startTime":704.93,"endTime":708.69,"body":"go back and spend time editing. Right. It's just like"},{"startTime":708.69,"endTime":712.45,"body":"I want to capture this moment and then be done again. These are snapshots. These"},{"startTime":712.45,"endTime":716.25,"body":"aren't like curated works of art that you might go out and create."},{"startTime":716.57,"endTime":720.05,"body":"There's a space for both of those. So I just take the photo. It"},{"startTime":720.05,"endTime":723.77,"body":"automatically applies this disposable camera"},{"startTime":725.29,"endTime":728.77,"body":"aesthetic to the image, and then it's done. It saved in my camera roll, and"},{"startTime":728.77,"endTime":731.93,"body":"again I move on. So those are the"},{"startTime":732.25,"endTime":735.21,"body":"two ways that I like to keep photography"},{"startTime":735.37,"endTime":739.0,"body":"incredibly, incredibly simple and still be able to get"},{"startTime":739.4,"endTime":741.4,"body":"interesting photos that are more than just."},{"startTime":743.48,"endTime":747.0,"body":"More than just the photos that you would take every day."},{"startTime":747.48,"endTime":751.24,"body":"There's a level of intent into them."},{"startTime":751.88,"endTime":755.56,"body":"So check those out. Well, don't check out the Sony TX20"},{"startTime":755.56,"endTime":758.0,"body":"because I don't want you to drive up the price just in case this thing"},{"startTime":758.0,"endTime":761.12,"body":"dies on me. I want to still be able to buy another one on ebay"},{"startTime":761.12,"endTime":764.64,"body":"because it is incredible and not have to spend 500 on it. But definitely check"},{"startTime":764.64,"endTime":768.28,"body":"out the Huji app if you are an iPhone"},{"startTime":768.28,"endTime":770.36,"body":"user. I don't know if it's on Android, but I'm sure that they have some"},{"startTime":770.36,"endTime":774.04,"body":"sort of similar version on Android."},{"startTime":774.68,"endTime":778.48,"body":"But here's the thing, also with that app, there's no, like, hundred different"},{"startTime":778.48,"endTime":782.24,"body":"filters you could choose. There's none of that. It's just it is what it"},{"startTime":782.24,"endTime":785.68,"body":"is. And that's. That's what keeps it simple for me. I don't have to go"},{"startTime":785.68,"endTime":788.76,"body":"up, go out and say, do I want this to be a black and white,"},{"startTime":788.84,"endTime":792.2,"body":"you know, film simulation? Do I want it to be more"},{"startTime":792.2,"endTime":795.6,"body":"contrasty? Do I want it to be super flat? No, it's just, you take the"},{"startTime":795.6,"endTime":799.17,"body":"photo, there's no control over it, and then it's done. I love it."},{"startTime":800.21,"endTime":803.77,"body":"Okay, tip number two for keeping photography simple"},{"startTime":803.77,"endTime":807.01,"body":"is to make it tangible."},{"startTime":807.97,"endTime":811.65,"body":"You know what's really fun in photography? As much as I love"},{"startTime":811.65,"endTime":815.41,"body":"going out and shooting and spending time out in, you know, a"},{"startTime":815.41,"endTime":818.85,"body":"beautiful location or just noticing beautiful light"},{"startTime":819.01,"endTime":822.37,"body":"going somewhere new, it is actually seeing the"},{"startTime":822.37,"endTime":826.05,"body":"photos in my hand. It's having a printed version"},{"startTime":826.05,"endTime":829.81,"body":"of these photos. We are so used to just taking a photo and then it"},{"startTime":829.81,"endTime":833.57,"body":"just shows up. On all of our devices, our phone, our, you know, an iPad,"},{"startTime":833.57,"endTime":837.17,"body":"a computer or whatever, that we kind of miss"},{"startTime":837.65,"endTime":841.01,"body":"this, this element of this, this huge"},{"startTime":841.33,"endTime":845.13,"body":"element of photography, which is the tangible aspect of it, the being able"},{"startTime":845.13,"endTime":848.65,"body":"to hold a photo in your hand. Printing"},{"startTime":848.65,"endTime":852.45,"body":"feels like magic. It truly does. It's like"},{"startTime":852.69,"endTime":856.54,"body":"you went out, you saw something and now, you"},{"startTime":856.54,"endTime":859.38,"body":"know, you edit it or you don't edit it, but once you get a print"},{"startTime":859.38,"endTime":862.98,"body":"of it, it feels complete. Right?"},{"startTime":863.06,"endTime":866.62,"body":"We also live in this world where we do a lot of pixel peeping."},{"startTime":866.62,"endTime":870.379,"body":"We worry a lot about resolution, but you'll find very"},{"startTime":870.379,"endTime":874.18,"body":"quickly that Even like a 4 megapixel photo can print an 8"},{"startTime":874.18,"endTime":877.7,"body":"by 10, which is like a good size print. You know, you don't need"},{"startTime":877.94,"endTime":881.7,"body":"a ton of resolution for a great print. And,"},{"startTime":882.09,"endTime":885.85,"body":"and they're so fricking cheap too. Like"},{"startTime":885.93,"endTime":889.69,"body":"you can get four by sixes from like Walgreens or CVS or"},{"startTime":890.25,"endTime":893.77,"body":"Costco or something like that for like 18 cents a print. Like,"},{"startTime":893.85,"endTime":897.53,"body":"give me a break. You know, you're not printing 200 photos at a time."},{"startTime":897.69,"endTime":901.53,"body":"Even just printing four or five photos, you know,"},{"startTime":901.53,"endTime":905.33,"body":"that's less than five bucks. That's like $2. Crazy,"},{"startTime":905.33,"endTime":908.57,"body":"crazy cheap. And again, holding it in your hand"},{"startTime":909.05,"endTime":912.73,"body":"feels incredible. Now you layer that on top"},{"startTime":912.73,"endTime":916.29,"body":"of actually giving a print to a friend or family"},{"startTime":916.29,"endTime":919.97,"body":"member. Holy cow, you just made"},{"startTime":919.97,"endTime":923.81,"body":"their day. So I'm talking a lot about like four by sixes and"},{"startTime":923.81,"endTime":927.57,"body":"prints that you can get from actual print labs. And sure enough, I bought it. So you'll be looking,"},{"startTime":1573.3000000000002,"endTime":1577.0600000000002,"body":"you'll be looking in one spot. Then you take another photo just a little bit"},{"startTime":1577.0600000000002,"endTime":1579.9,"body":"to the right. And then you take another photo just a little bit more to"},{"startTime":1579.9,"endTime":1582.14,"body":"the right. And then you take another photo just a little bit more to the"},{"startTime":1582.14,"endTime":1585.5400000000002,"body":"right. And then you take that series of photos and then you bring them into"},{"startTime":1585.5400000000002,"endTime":1589.3400000000001,"body":"Photoshop and then stitch them together into a seamless photo. Even"},{"startTime":2198.36,"endTime":2202.1600000000003,"body":"though I did do my fourth grade presentation on"},{"startTime":2202.1600000000003,"endTime":2205.2400000000002,"body":"Benjamin Franklin of like, you know, our founding fathers"},{"startTime":2205.7200000000003,"endTime":2209.2000000000003,"body":"still can't, you know, I don't, I don't know the guy, but I do wear"},{"startTime":2209.2000000000003,"endTime":2212.8,"body":"a Benjamin Franklin wig pretty well. So whatever, you're not going to look into it. But maybe"},{"startTime":2240.8100000000004,"endTime":2244.61,"body":"later a video pops up on YouTube all about back button focus,"},{"startTime":2244.8500000000004,"endTime":2247.3300000000004,"body":"and you decide to watch it because you're like, oh, yeah, I heard about that."},{"startTime":2247.9500000000003,"endTime":2251.4700000000003,"body":"And then watching it, you think, okay, that does kind of make"},{"startTime":2251.4700000000003,"endTime":2255.3100000000004,"body":"sense. I kind of get it. But I obviously don't understand"},{"startTime":2255.9500000000003,"endTime":2259.7900000000004,"body":"how to implement it and use it and why I would use this"},{"startTime":2259.7900000000004,"endTime":2263.3100000000004,"body":"over just pressing the shutter button to lock in focus."},{"startTime":2263.7090000000003,"endTime":2267.55,"body":"But then you decide, well, I'm going to give it a try for myself"},{"startTime":2267.55,"endTime":2271.19,"body":"because here's instructions right here. Yeah, like photograph just something that has an A. Photograph"},{"startTime":2417.03,"endTime":2420.8300000000004,"body":"just something that has a B. Just a C, right? And don't try to like,"},{"startTime":2420.8300000000004,"endTime":2424.2700000000004,"body":"look for like a restaurant sign that has all the letters. Like, you go out"},{"startTime":2424.2700000000004,"endTime":2427.9100000000003,"body":"and you find all these things, you know, in nature."},{"startTime":2428.15,"endTime":2430.51,"body":"You find a door handle and you're like, wow, that kind of looks like an"},{"startTime":2430.51,"endTime":2433.59,"body":"L. Things like that. So difficult to do,"},{"startTime":2442.55,"endTime":2446.0800000000004,"body":"but so rewarding. But your list may be something"},{"startTime":2446.0800000000004,"endTime":2449.4800000000005,"body":"like, you know, a scavenger hunt. It might be"},{"startTime":2449.8,"endTime":2453.6000000000004,"body":"something red, it might be a shadow or reflection. You can"},{"startTime":2453.6000000000004,"endTime":2457.2400000000002,"body":"ask Chad GBT for ideas, you know, like, help create"},{"startTime":2457.32,"endTime":2460.76,"body":"a beginner friendly photo scavenger hunt. Tons of fun."},{"startTime":2461.2400000000002,"endTime":2465.0400000000004,"body":"Next, give yourself a time limit to shoot, right? Come up with"},{"startTime":2465.0400000000004,"endTime":2468.5600000000004,"body":"this idea of like, okay, I'm gonna go somewhere and then I'm gonna have to"},{"startTime":2468.5600000000004,"endTime":2471.8100000000004,"body":"take 20 photos in 10"},{"startTime":2472.13,"endTime":2475.9300000000003,"body":"minutes. What that does is it forces you to"},{"startTime":2475.9300000000003,"endTime":2479.65,"body":"use your instincts in photography rather than, you know, trying to make"},{"startTime":2479.65,"endTime":2483.3700000000003,"body":"every single photo perfect. And I think that you'll find when that 10"},{"startTime":2483.3700000000003,"endTime":2486.2500000000005,"body":"minute timer goes up, you'll be like, well, actually, there's still a few more photos"},{"startTime":2486.2500000000005,"endTime":2489.21,"body":"around here that I want to capture. And you'll, you know, you'll have those creative"},{"startTime":2489.21,"endTime":2492.53,"body":"juices flowing. You'll be good to go. You'll just find yourself, keep"},{"startTime":2492.61,"endTime":2496.3700000000003,"body":"shooting. Next is a is an idea that is"},{"startTime":2496.3700000000003,"endTime":2499.65,"body":"pretty popular on the Internet to recreate a favorite"},{"startTime":2500.36,"endTime":2503.92,"body":"photo. Maybe this is from your childhood. Maybe this is one of your"},{"startTime":2503.92,"endTime":2507.6000000000004,"body":"old photos that you've done. Try to recreate, you know, one of these"},{"startTime":2507.6000000000004,"endTime":2511.36,"body":"old photos that you have in your life. It could be a painting as"},{"startTime":2511.36,"endTime":2515.1200000000003,"body":"well. Something that forces you to look at an image and then break down"},{"startTime":2515.1200000000003,"endTime":2518.96,"body":"in front of you how to rebuild it to capture it in a similar way."},{"startTime":2518.96,"endTime":2522.5200000000004,"body":"When you have to think about things like composition, posing, lighting"},{"startTime":2522.84,"endTime":2526.69,"body":"the background that you have again, again, it can be"},{"startTime":2526.69,"endTime":2530.3300000000004,"body":"challenging, but it can also be really, really rewarding when you get"},{"startTime":2530.3300000000004,"endTime":2533.8900000000003,"body":"it done. So there you go. There's three quick ideas for you to"},{"startTime":2534.13,"endTime":2537.8900000000003,"body":"actually go out and start shooting right now that are gonna"},{"startTime":2537.8900000000003,"endTime":2541.6490000000003,"body":"make photography more fun.
