Because it doesn't feel like there's"},{"startTime":337.56,"endTime":341.28,"body":"this huge barrier to entry. You could just use your phone to take photos."},{"startTime":341.28,"endTime":345.0,"body":"But you have decided that you want to get"},{"startTime":345.0,"endTime":348.84,"body":"better at this thing that we love, that is photography. You want to"},{"startTime":348.84,"endTime":352.68,"body":"learn more about it. You have this insatiable lust for"},{"startTime":352.68,"endTime":356.22,"body":"knowledge, and that is why you're here and you're taking the"},{"startTime":356.22,"endTime":359.38,"body":"time. Maybe you're in your car, right? Maybe this is the only time of the"},{"startTime":359.38,"endTime":362.14,"body":"day that you get. Maybe you're out on a walk with your dog and you"},{"startTime":362.14,"endTime":365.82,"body":"only have 15, 20 minutes, right? But regardless, you're taking this"},{"startTime":365.82,"endTime":369.14,"body":"time to better yourself. And that is commendable."},{"startTime":369.78,"endTime":373.22,"body":"But here's the thing. Listening to this episode"},{"startTime":373.62,"endTime":376.98,"body":"is helpful, sure. But if you don't do"},{"startTime":377.14,"endTime":380.06,"body":"anything about it, it's going to be all for nothing and it's going to be"},{"startTime":380.06,"endTime":383.75,"body":"wasted. All right, let's talk about element number one, that if you"},{"startTime":394.79,"endTime":398.43,"body":"pay attention to this, your photos are going to get better. The first"},{"startTime":398.43,"endTime":401.55,"body":"thing about light that you need to pay attention to is the"},{"startTime":402.03,"endTime":405.75,"body":"intensity. What is intensity of light? This is the first thing that you"},{"startTime":405.75,"endTime":409.07,"body":"notice. It is simply how strong the light is,"},{"startTime":409.31,"endTime":412.9,"body":"right? This is the first thing that we notice, even as children. Oh, wow,"},{"startTime":413.05,"endTime":416.05,"body":"a really bright day outside, or, oh, it's so dark in here, I can barely"},{"startTime":416.05,"endTime":419.05,"body":"see anything. And if you spend a lot of time"},{"startTime":419.05,"endTime":422.77,"body":"outdoors, or even if you're indoors a lot, it can"},{"startTime":422.77,"endTime":426.25,"body":"be difficult to notice the transition from morning"},{"startTime":426.33,"endTime":430.09,"body":"to afternoon to evening to nighttime because you're outside. And"},{"startTime":430.09,"endTime":433.65,"body":"it happens very gradually. You don't realize the"},{"startTime":433.65,"endTime":437.45,"body":"true intensity of the light until you have a quick change."},{"startTime":437.85,"endTime":441.57,"body":"So this might be. This is where I really first noticed it. As a"},{"startTime":441.57,"endTime":445.33,"body":"child is going in to watch a movie, say in the afternoon, two, three"},{"startTime":445.33,"endTime":448.81,"body":"o' clock, when you leave the movie theater"},{"startTime":449.13,"endTime":452.89,"body":"as a kid, you know, it's super dark inside the movie theater. And you walk"},{"startTime":452.89,"endTime":456.49,"body":"outside, Holy cow. Like, it feels like"},{"startTime":456.65,"endTime":460.17,"body":"you are being blinded because the sun is so"},{"startTime":460.97,"endTime":464.65,"body":"overbearing and bright. You"},{"startTime":464.65,"endTime":468.49,"body":"immediately understand the intensity of light and you realize"},{"startTime":468.81,"endTime":472.45,"body":"how fantastic our eyes are at adjusting to"},{"startTime":472.45,"endTime":475.91,"body":"light. Because while you're in this dark theater, dark hallways,"},{"startTime":476.07,"endTime":479.87,"body":"you can see just fine, right? But if you go"},{"startTime":479.87,"endTime":483.51,"body":"out into that bright daylight, holy cow, Your eyes constrict."},{"startTime":484.55,"endTime":488.31,"body":"It's difficult to see. You're like squinting. But then very"},{"startTime":488.31,"endTime":492.07,"body":"quickly your eyes adjust and you can go on like normal. However, if you were"},{"startTime":492.07,"endTime":495.43,"body":"to go back into that movie theater, you wouldn't be able to see"},{"startTime":495.43,"endTime":498.55,"body":"anything for like a minute or two again until your eyes"},{"startTime":499.03,"endTime":502.66,"body":"adjusted. So your eyes are fantastic. And about"},{"startTime":502.9,"endTime":506.58,"body":"recognizing and regulating the amount of light that is available for"},{"startTime":506.58,"endTime":510.1,"body":"you to interpret. Our cameras, on the other hand,"},{"startTime":510.58,"endTime":514.3,"body":"not so much. We are the camera's brain. We have"},{"startTime":514.3,"endTime":517.9,"body":"to tell it how to control the"},{"startTime":517.9,"endTime":521.54,"body":"amount of light, right? If you go outside with your camera, it doesn't automatically"},{"startTime":521.7,"endTime":525.26,"body":"start changing everything so that it, you know, can capture a perfect"},{"startTime":525.26,"endTime":528.82,"body":"exposure. It wants you to be able to tell"},{"startTime":528.82,"endTime":532.26,"body":"it what settings it needs to be able to capture that"},{"startTime":532.26,"endTime":535.6,"body":"perfect exposure. So just being able to recognize the"},{"startTime":535.6,"endTime":539.2,"body":"intensity of light is really going to help you to be able to"},{"startTime":539.52,"endTime":543.28,"body":"do that for your camera so that you can start capturing better photos"},{"startTime":543.28,"endTime":547.08,"body":"more properly exposed. Now, here's the thing about intensity, is that it's"},{"startTime":547.08,"endTime":550.88,"body":"not just about having too much or having too little"},{"startTime":551.2,"endTime":555.0,"body":"light. The intensity affects more"},{"startTime":555.0,"endTime":558.8,"body":"than just the amount. It also affects the feeling of the"},{"startTime":558.8,"endTime":562.2,"body":"photo. Right? A photo where the light is very"},{"startTime":562.2,"endTime":566.04,"body":"intense, right? Just for a very easy to"},{"startTime":566.04,"endTime":569.72,"body":"understand idea here, think bright and airy"},{"startTime":569.96,"endTime":573.56,"body":"type photos. That type of imagery feels."},{"startTime":573.64,"endTime":577.16,"body":"It feels energetic. It's high contrast, it feels very"},{"startTime":577.16,"endTime":580.64,"body":"sharp. It feels like there's a lot going on in the photo. It"},{"startTime":580.64,"endTime":584.12,"body":"feels lively. Okay? Now if you"},{"startTime":584.12,"endTime":587.84,"body":"contrast that with photos with a low light"},{"startTime":587.84,"endTime":591.28,"body":"intensity, more of a quote, unquote, dark and moody style photo,"},{"startTime":591.6,"endTime":595.44,"body":"Dark and moody style, images feel more soft, they feel more"},{"startTime":595.84,"endTime":599.6,"body":"personal, they feel more intimate. And even though,"},{"startTime":599.92,"endTime":603.12,"body":"you know, you may be capturing the exact same thing,"},{"startTime":603.76,"endTime":607.2,"body":"the same subject, the intensity of the light"},{"startTime":607.2,"endTime":610.24,"body":"changes how the image feels."},{"startTime":611.12,"endTime":614.88,"body":"So when I'm photographing specifically people, right, that was my"},{"startTime":614.88,"endTime":618.62,"body":"bread and butter for a long time. Weddings, engagements, portraits."},{"startTime":618.94,"endTime":622.62,"body":"What I would look for is softer, lower amount of light, right?"},{"startTime":622.62,"endTime":626.42,"body":"I don't want it extremely intense because that is typically"},{"startTime":626.42,"endTime":630.06,"body":"going to be more flattering to somebody. When we have"},{"startTime":630.62,"endTime":634.3,"body":"very intense light on somebody, it can"},{"startTime":634.3,"endTime":638.02,"body":"cause them to squint, which can cause their face to wrinkle a bit. And"},{"startTime":638.02,"endTime":641.58,"body":"harsh light has its place. Honestly, I do love using"},{"startTime":641.58,"endTime":645.1,"body":"harsh light when I can. But if I'm getting a traditional"},{"startTime":645.63,"endTime":649.15,"body":"head and shoulders portrait or, you know, a photo of two"},{"startTime":649.15,"endTime":652.87,"body":"People looking at each other, I'm going to want light with"},{"startTime":652.87,"endTime":656.31,"body":"a lower amount of intensity so that their"},{"startTime":656.31,"endTime":659.95,"body":"facial features are a little bit softer. They don't have to squint at each other."},{"startTime":659.95,"endTime":663.63,"body":"They look more like their natural selves. Right? That harsh light,"},{"startTime":663.63,"endTime":666.99,"body":"it's bold, it's dynamic, it's fantastic in the right"},{"startTime":666.99,"endTime":670.35,"body":"situations, but it's rarely forgiving."},{"startTime":671.16,"endTime":675.0,"body":"Oftentimes people think, you know, that shooting in the afternoon is the worst"},{"startTime":675.0,"endTime":678.28,"body":"thing possible because it's so bright outside. And while"},{"startTime":678.52,"endTime":682.28,"body":"that is true, it is so bright. That leads us into"},{"startTime":682.36,"endTime":685.72,"body":"what the actual problem with shooting at high noon is,"},{"startTime":685.88,"endTime":689.56,"body":"is the second thing that we need to think about, which is direction"},{"startTime":689.88,"endTime":693.64,"body":"of light. So number one is the intensity of light,"},{"startTime":693.64,"endTime":697.0,"body":"right? How much there is. And the second thing is"},{"startTime":697.16,"endTime":700.72,"body":"direction of light or where is that light coming"},{"startTime":700.72,"endTime":704.56,"body":"from? Because at high noon, guess what? The sun is high in the"},{"startTime":704.56,"endTime":708.32,"body":"sky and it's coming straight down. If you are of a"},{"startTime":708.32,"endTime":711.44,"body":"certain age. You know, I grew up, born in the 80s, grew up as a"},{"startTime":711.44,"endTime":714.88,"body":"kid in the early 90s. And one of the shows that I watched"},{"startTime":715.04,"endTime":718.76,"body":"a lot because it felt scary was the show on"},{"startTime":718.76,"endTime":722.52,"body":"Nickelodeon, Are you afraid of the dark? And if you're not familiar, are"},{"startTime":722.52,"endTime":725.6,"body":"you afraid of the dark? Was like this band of kids who would leave their"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":725.6,"endTime":729.44,"body":"30pm Meet in the"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":729.44,"endTime":733.22,"body":"woods. Yeah, this is crazy, now that I think about it. And then they."},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":733.22,"endTime":737.02,"body":"They formed this group called the Midnight Society. And they would tell scary stories."},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":737.18,"endTime":740.62,"body":"After the stories were over, then they'd, you know, go home. Well,"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":740.94,"endTime":744.62,"body":"one of the things that I remember most as a kid is"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":744.62,"endTime":748.46,"body":"that before they would tell a story, maybe they would have, like, a"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":748.46,"endTime":752.26,"body":"flashlight that would shine on the person who was telling the story. And the flashlight"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":752.26,"endTime":755.62,"body":"would be. So they'd be sitting on the log, right? They'd be holding the flashlight"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":755.62,"endTime":759.23,"body":"and it would be about in their lap, right? Or under their face,"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":759.31,"endTime":762.91,"body":"and it would be shining straight up at them from"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":762.91,"endTime":766.31,"body":"below. And what this did is it gave a very spooky,"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":766.31,"endTime":770.07,"body":"eerie, scary feel to the"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":770.07,"endTime":773.87,"body":"person telling the story. Why is that? Because that's not how"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":773.87,"endTime":777.71,"body":"we naturally see people. We almost never see"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":777.71,"endTime":780.99,"body":"people being lit from below. It is a very"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":780.99,"endTime":784.59,"body":"unnatural thing and therefore feels quite scary."},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":784.83,"endTime":788.59,"body":"But what is the difference, right? Like, what makes it scary?"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":788.59,"endTime":792.33,"body":"It's the direction of the light. It's not the intensity of the light."},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":792.33,"endTime":795.77,"body":"It's not the. It's not anything else about the light except for the"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":795.77,"endTime":799.49,"body":"direction it's coming up from the bottom and what it's"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":799.49,"endTime":802.97,"body":"doing is it's creating these. These weird shapes of"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":803.13,"endTime":806.73,"body":"shadow and light on the face that, again, does not look"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":806.89,"endTime":810.53,"body":"normal. So if you're ever watching a scary movie and you"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":810.53,"endTime":814.17,"body":"see the villain or monster or whatever it"},{"speaker":"house. They would sneak out at, like, you know, 11","startTime":814.17,"endTime":817.77,"body":"is, they're always in some sort of really weird"},{"speaker":"house.
