No Second Class Citizens
Throughout the history of humanity, women have been treated as second-class citizens. We have been seen as minorities, despite representing 50% of the world's population, and when it comes to leadership, we have consistently been underrepresented. This situation leads to our needs being sidelined. That is why, in this podcast, I want to place women where we rightfully belong: as first-class citizens.
No Second Class Citizens
Kate Davies, Homelessness NSW, is it possible to end homelessness in Australia?
In this compelling episode, we're joined by Dr Kate Davies from Homelessness NSW as we tackle one of Australia's most pressing societal issues: homelessness. From exploring why Australia hasn't mirrored Finland's "Housing First" success in nearly eradicating homelessness to examining the Australian government's recent $2 billion investment in social housing, we dive deep into potential solutions and challenges.
Kate also sheds light on the nuances of the homelessness issue, including the stigmas often associated with homelessness and the reasons that lead individuals down this path. We delve into the unique adversities women face, the concerning statistic that reveals 80% of the recent surge in homelessness is attributed to women, and the alarming trend of increasing homelessness among women above 50.
With a focus on practicalities, we discuss as well the services available to the homeless people, from medical check-ups to the availability of female hygiene products. As we draw this enlightening conversation to a close, Kate offers tangible ways in which individuals can make a difference in the lives of the homeless.
Join us for an insightful journey into understanding homelessness in Australia and the collective efforts required to address it!
