Words From the Cross: I Thirst

Duane Brooks

Jesus knew he had work to do and a time to complete it. This purpose guided him. At the cross, his hour had finally come, his work was coming to completion, and he cried out, “I thirst.” This was the fifth of his seven sayings from the cross. What does it mean that Jesus, fully human and fully divine felt his thirst. Once again, he is fulfilling Psalm 22. How could the God who created the oceans, lakes, rivers and streams thirst? What had happened to him?  What does it mean for us? Message based on John 19:28-29.

Quotes:
Duane Brooks: Jesus' thirst shows us the reality and the completeness of his own self-emptying.

Lupe Rojas: Only God Knows.

Duane Brooks: Jesus is God and he knew what he was doing. So when he cried out, I thirst, in a way, what Jesus is showing us is the reality and the completeness of his own self emptying. Jesus is showing us that he knows the time has come and his thirst is just a reminder that everything he's been doing for his Father in this whole journey, it reveals the incarnation and the deep thirst that Jesus felt on our behalf, and he speaks it out loud.

Duane Brooks: He emptied himself completely so that through his death, every thirst of our souls could be completely satisfied, and that we through his emptiness might be filled with the very spirit of God.

Augustine of Hippo: Man's maker was made man. That he, ruler of the stars, might nurse at his mother's breast, that the bread of life might hunger, the fountain thirst, The light sleep. The way be tired on his journey, The truth be accused by false witnesses. The teacher be beaten with whips. The foundation be suspended on wood. That strength might grow weak, that the healer might be wounded, that life might die.

Gregory of Nazianzus: That which Jesus has not assumed, he has not healed. If he didn't become fully human, if he was not tempted in always as we are yet without sin, he could never become our perfect holy high priest.

C.S. Lewis in The Silver Chair:
"I daren't come and drink," said Jill.
"Then you will die of thirst," said the Lion.
"Oh dear!" said Jill, coming another step nearer. "I suppose I must go and look for another stream then."
"There is no other stream," said the Lion.

Duane Brooks: Jesus thirsted physically so that none of us would ever have to thirst spiritually again! As we drink deeply from the well of his living water, we discover that he alone is the satiation of every human thirst. Had he never thirsted, then our spiritual thirst could never be quenched! So we bless his thirst which enabled Him to become the source of living waters so that we may drink deeply and give this water to others to drink!
