014 - Spiritual Disciplines - Evangelism & Discipleship
Show Notes

The great commission - Go… Make Disciples… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded (Matt 28:19-20)

The church is tasked with making disciples… not converts. Conversion without discipleship leads to weak Christians who are not rooted in Christ. Discipleship presumes evangelism. Evangelism is not the goal Disciple-making is.

How is Evangelism (making disciples) a means of grace that will help me overcome porn?

  1. The teacher always learns more than the student
    1. Fuels our reading of scripture as we consider how to explain an idea or concept to someone else.
    2. Causes us to look at the text in a different way/new perspective.
    3. Causes us to anticipate questions and seek answers.
  2. Requires us to have a deep understanding of the Gospel.
    1. What does the resurrection of Christ mean for my life?
    2. How do I deal with sin and shame?
    3. Who am I, especially when I sin… again?
    4. How do I deal with tragedy/suffering? Does Jesus have anything to say about it?
  3. Preach the Gospel… to yourself
    1. As you better understand the message of the Gospel, you will be better able to preach it to yourself in moments of testing and temptation.

    4. If we don't preach the Gospel to ourselves, we will only hear the lies from Satan. The Gospel is the answer to the lies (thoughts) that Satan puts into our minds.
    5. Proactive Preaching - make it a daily habit to gaze upon the glory of the Lord. Knowing that a difficult circumstance is coming, we can prepare our hearts to keep looking to Christ in the midst of a trial.
    6. Reactive Preaching - Look back on the events of your life through the lens of the Gospel.

1 Peter 3:15  “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

Ephesians 6:15 “As shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”

Psalm 42:11 “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
