today's sermon text, the thing that kept flooding my mind is why so many? 00:06:43.509 --> 00:06:59.909 Or what makes our faith, Christianity, as we refer to it, what makes it different from all those other ones I just listed, from Muslim or from Hindus or from Buddhist or from Jewish or other religions that we see on that list. 00:07:00.709 --> 00:07:13.189 And what I want to point out to you today is that today's sermon text highlights one of the core distinctives of our faith as followers of Jesus that we see in his gospel. 00:07:13.429 --> 00:07:25.029 And it's not that Jesus was a man, it's not simply that Jesus walked the earth, it's not just that Jesus died, it is that he experienced a bodily resurrection. 00:07:25.669 --> 00:07:29.029 Without Easter, the gospel is not the gospel. 00:07:29.269 --> 00:07:47.029 You see, many other world religions would agree that Jesus was a man, that he was a faithful and profitable teacher, that he lived a life and that he died, but they are missing a critical, I would say more than critical, a necessary piece of truth that he raised. 00:07:47.189 --> 00:07:54.549 As one commentator put it, he was permanently and eternally raised from the dead, having received a body that could never die. 00:07:55.029 --> 00:08:04.629 And as we see in this text, without the bodily resurrection of Jesus, our faith crumbles like a house built with no foundation. 00:08:04.789 --> 00:08:05.509 Fair warning. 00:08:05.589 --> 00:08:16.629 The first half of this text is going to be fairly awkward if you don't notice that in the text, because Paul is illustrating all of these consequences in relation to if Jesus didn't rise. 00:08:16.870 --> 00:08:21.029 So as we work through the text, Paul is going to bluntly address verse 12. 00:08:21.189 --> 00:08:24.469 Verse 12 sets the context for the entire sermon text. 00:08:24.629 --> 00:08:28.310 The Corinthians were questioning the resurrection of the dead. 00:08:28.469 --> 00:08:32.310 As to say, no one raises from the dead, even those with faith in Christ. 00:08:32.470 --> 00:08:34.149 There is no resurrection. 00:08:34.310 --> 00:08:42.950 And Paul bluntly addresses their questioning by saying, if no one raises from the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 00:08:43.110 --> 00:08:45.909 And we're going to see two consequences if that is true. 00:08:46.230 --> 00:08:48.470 Spoiler alert, let me just say that from the beginning. 00:08:48.549 --> 00:08:49.269 That's not true. 00:08:49.429 --> 00:08:52.230 But the two consequences that we see are this. 00:08:52.470 --> 00:08:54.950 Without Christ's resurrection, the gospel falls silent. 00:08:55.029 --> 00:08:59.590 And without Christ's resurrection, still sin still reigns and death still rules. 00:08:59.750 --> 00:09:04.629 And then we're also going to see the good news, the two realities, and the two realities are this. 00:09:04.789 --> 00:09:09.269 With Christ's resurrection, sin is conquered and death is Paul so uh, with such purpose and with such intentionality and with such passion, clearly articulated the gospel, right? 00:09:35.909 --> 00:09:40.470 He knew the gospel message is worthless without the resurrection of Jesus. 00:09:40.629 --> 00:09:47.509 So he lays out the gospel message before he begins to address this question that he addresses in verse 12. 00:09:47.669 --> 00:09:53.110 Something we say around here often, I say it all the time, both in conversation with people and from the platform. 00:09:53.269 --> 00:09:58.069 We are one with Christ in his life, and we are one with Christ in his death. 00:09:58.309 --> 00:10:01.110 You hear us say something similar when we baptize. 00:10:01.269 --> 00:10:05.829 One of the things that we often say when we baptize comes straight from Romans 6, 4, and this is what it said. 00:10:06.069 --> 00:10:17.029 We were buried, therefore, with him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might be raised to walk in the newness of life. 00:10:17.350 --> 00:10:19.350 To walk in the newness of life. 00:10:19.509 --> 00:10:21.909 You see, we have this oneness with Christ. 00:10:21.990 --> 00:10:31.509 And because of the oneness with Christ, if Christ didn't experience a bodily resurrection, then neither will we. 00:10:31.829 --> 00:10:33.189 The inverse is true at the top of the sermon because the tomb is empty. 00:12:09.269 --> 00:12:14.230 One great apologetic in this sphere is to look at the life of the disciples post-Jesus. 00:12:14.389 --> 00:12:25.990 I don't know if you've ever done that, but do you think that the apostles would have kept after it, kept going if the grave held their purpose? 00:12:26.870 --> 00:12:33.750 If the grave held Jesus, 00:12:43.909 --> 00:12:49.669 The Great Commission was given after the resurrection of Jesus, just before his ascension. 00:12:50.309 --> 00:12:52.470 You read about that in Matthew 28. 00:12:52.870 --> 00:13:02.789 And that how and the where of the disciples simply, just those two things, the how and the where of the disciples give evidence to the bodily resurrection of Jesus. 00:13:03.429 --> 00:13:09.669 The how they died by horrific means, even crucifixion. 00:13:10.230 --> 00:13:18.149 They died from Ethiopia to Rome as they took the gospel to all nations, just like they were commanded to do. 00:13:18.309 --> 00:13:27.909 Paul in verse 15 and 16 of today's sermon text, we are even found to be misrepresenting God because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise. 00:13:27.990 --> 00:13:34.230 If it is true that the dead are not raised, for if the dead are not raised, not even Christ had been raised. 00:13:34.709 --> 00:13:47.829 The word in verse 15 that you see there in verse 15, misrepresenting in your text, if you're not reading out the ESV, one of the ways it's often translated is false witness. 00:13:48.069 --> 00:14:04.309 When you look at the original word there, it's pseudo-martyr, martyr referring to witness, what is being communicated in this, if Christ didn't raise from the death, then all of us who testified about Christ, all of us, even Paul himself, that's what he's saying. 00:14:04.470 --> 00:14:08.709 All of us who testified about Christ, who gave witness, would be liars. 00:14:13.110 --> 00:14:17.029 This takes us to a raise it up. 00:14:45.590 --> 00:14:51.189 The Jews then said, It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and you will raise it up in three days. 00:14:51.429 --> 00:14:54.470 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 00:14:55.029 --> 00:15:10.949 If he could raise the widow's son in Luke 7, if he could raise Jairus' daughter in Mark 5, if he could raise Lazarus after he'd been dead for over 72 hours for four days, but he couldn't raise himself, then guess what? 00:15:11.509 --> 00:15:13.269 He couldn't have been the Messiah. 00:15:14.709 --> 00:15:15.829 That's the first --> 00:16:23.029 I know that's a tongue twister, but think about this way. 00:16:23.189 --> 00:16:27.429 I was talking to some guys in the four-year beforehand, and I told them about this illustration. 00:16:27.750 --> 00:16:39.829 All the faith in the world, if you walk out to your car today, all the faith in the world that you have in your car, if someone stole your wheels and put it
