So please welcome from Reece Across America our good friend, courtney George, in the house today.

Speaker 2:

Good morning. What's up, courtney? How are you? I'm great. How are you?

Speaker 1:

We are doing great. I'm so excited to get to talk to you today. I got to see you at Women in Trucking just this week and here we get to talk a little bit about what's happening over at Reece Across America. So it's coming up really soon. I can't believe we're like a month away. I mean, it's so close it's coming up.

Speaker 2:

It is incredibly close. I mean, it's so crazy to go. I thought this morning I was like, oh my goodness, I can't believe tomorrow is Veterans Day and that's normally really the point where my bags are starting to get packed for Maine. I had one load leave this week already, so it's been a lot of excitement that's happening right now.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, now it's wonderful. So just anybody who might be listening, who doesn't know, at Reece Across America is quick elevator pitch. Tell everybody what it is.

Speaker 2:

And the Reece Across America is a nonprofit where we place sponsored Veterans Reads on the headstones for veterans across the country. We have a goal to remember those who are no longer with us, honor those who served and teach the next generation that freedom isn't free, and we do this every year. We have the second or third Saturday in December where we place all of those sponsored Veterans Reads out for our veterans. This year I'm really excited to say we're going to be in over 4,000 locations with over 3 million Reads. It's huge.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that is amazing and we're so excited. The Beta team is going to be involved. So we have a pretty small team here. We have four of us on the team here, but we are going to be down at Jefferson Barracks and so I'm very excited about that, right here in St Louis. It's our first time participating in the event. Last year I was introduced to it through one of my clients, hieromaster out of Alabama, and this year we're going to participate on our own. So we're very excited about that. We're looking forward to being a part of that, and there's several ways that people can be a part of this. I mean so a couple of ways. I'll list them and you can talk about them so people can donate money for Reece. They can help with that, with the financial, and I think that's still available, correct?

Speaker 2:

It's not too late for that, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

Yep, love that. And then, of course, if they miss out this year, they can always do it next year, which is awesome. They can go to as local cemetery where it is participating in all the locations I believe Ron Reeves across Americaorg so they can see where there's opportunities to participate, although some of them get sold out quickly. The spots get taken up because it's such a popular event. And then the final way is that truck drivers can help and trucking companies can donate truckloads to get the Reeves across the country to the different cemeteries that are out there, and so talk about where things are at right now, a month out. Where do you guys need the most help?

Speaker 2:

I mean, all three areas are where we need the most help. But from my perspective and trucking I'm always going to need transportation professionals that can help us. We accept donations through Giving Tuesday. So if you think about it one, I already have Reeves in production. But two, those numbers that I'm working with they're still calculating, they're still growing and so I say all of that, I'm in Maine at that point and so we're having to adjust loads to make sure all of those sponsor gris get on a truck.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I talked to a lot of people and somebody goes well, can you tell me exactly how many Reeves are going to be on my truck? And I told a driver this morning. I was like I don't know. And the reason is is if your truck backs up to that dock, if someone has sponsored a Reeve for a loved one, it is my goal that that Reeve is on that truck, if I can make it happen, because they want to be there and have their loved one remembered. They want to make sure that that loved one, even if they can't get there, that that Reeve is placed, that they get the photo, and I don't want to be the person who stands in the way. That's what makes Reeves across America so special, is that?

Speaker 2:

So our loads are changing. Every single day we're adding new locations and with each new location that means I need more trucks, I need more people who are willing to help. And here's the thing I mean. People joke I literally will load. You know, we load car haulers, I load a horse trailer. I can load anything short of a flatbed and a tanker. I can do it. Conestoga is all in Curtin sides. Love them, doesn't matter. Our group will hand load. And for us I mean our average loading times 20 under 30, it's about 27 minutes. So to say, you know, for a driver that's huge. I remember when I was on the carrier side and detention. You know your first two hours were free. You shouldn't experience that at Reeve Cross America.

Speaker 2:

We work so hard to make sure that they experience it. Everyone has is awesome.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so let's talk about the logistics of it. All the reads come out of Maine. Where in Maine are they? Are they coming out of?

Speaker 2:

We're in a small town called Columbia Falls. It's about an hour and a half. It's called down East but it's northeast of Bangor. So what I love is I tell everyone that comes up to Maine I'm like stop it. Dysarch truck stop If you haven't been go, it's like your last old school Truck stop. Restaurant is great. They have amazing Sundays. I took a bunch of drivers where they gave us like this there's some Sunday challenge where you can get like 30 scoops of ice cream.

Speaker 1:

I was like, oh, you're moly.

Speaker 2:

I was there this summer and I was like, ok, go, because one. I didn't think that. You know, if I'm here, we're 100% going to see that.

Speaker 1:

We're doing this. That's right, that's true.

Speaker 2:

It was a great place to stop. But then when you come down east, we've got so many things for every driver. So at our drivers lounge it's really the heart of Reese. Across America the drivers, the trucking companies, they're the heart. So we work really hard to make sure that our facilities there have everything you need. I've got showers, bathrooms. I even have a female only bathroom. We've got laundry facilities. The other thing that's really great the Tyson's Cook team. Tyson sends up their cook team that make three hot meals a day, I have to tell you really they are amazing at cooking.

Speaker 2:

I've never seen anyone who can come up with such creative you know different recipes definitely far better than anything you would eat at my house.

Speaker 1:

That's, that's awesome. Like that makes me want to drive a truck, like I want to get in a truck and head up to Maine and get some Reese. I mean, that's come up. You know, that's incredible.

Speaker 2:

It's such a great place. I've got pool tables. It is normal to see me running through there three, four times a day. A lot of people joke. There's that Saturday that Alabama plays the other state rival and I always watch it from the driver's side for everybody.

Speaker 2:

out there Roll tide roll tide, so I love watching it and sitting there at the driver's lounge. I think it for people it makes it a little more human and they're like oh my goodness there's. I've never seen somebody who's quite as passionate about football. I'll be like. Let me tell you about when I was at Alabama and we were not.

Speaker 1:

Let me tell you yeah.

Speaker 2:

So they're like, oh, you like football, it's kind of, you know it's a, it's a, it's a break for people when they're like, oh, she has real. She's not just talking about freight all the time. It's a lot of fun. It's such a community have our driver first mile experience that every driver that gets to come up can go on. When you check in, you sign in, we're going to get you loaded as quickly as possible. You probably already have an appointment. If you don't have an appointment, call me, email me, text message me. Let me get you set up with a loading appointment.

Speaker 2:

The other thing that we're going to do is take you out on that driver first mile. I've got some retired drivers that work with our team In the transportation area. They take you out. You get to go see the plant where the reeds are made. You see that whole process. You get to go out on our tip land. We talk about the tip land a lot, so that's where all of the trees, where the balsam is harvested. So they get to go out there and a lot of them place a dog tag while they're out there. They have that opportunity to place it for someone maybe they served with or a loved one. Maybe it's their dad or their son, someone that they've served with. Right now, out there on that tip land, we have over 18,000 dog tags which is amazing.

Speaker 2:

There are only two ways to the office, and there's one by road and the other one is to go through the tip land. Some mornings I'll drive through the tip land. It's just such a peaceful place to go. I told someone I was driving through and I just stopped. I had a couple of minutes and it was the calm before the storm started for the day and I said I stopped and I had my coffee and I was just standing out there Definitely very cold, and the wind blew and I could hear the dog tags and it was like a wind chime and it's it made every hair on my body stand up to be like I'm not out here alone. There are 18,000 other people out here with me, and so for many of our drivers, that's healing for them to be able to go out there, because most of them have served, and that's what I love about what we do. They get that experience, they get to see all that makes Ries across America so special. Yeah, what an incredible experience.

Speaker 1:

I mean, you guys have really thought through how to make this great for drivers and so for drivers listening, if they want to, they want to get involved and take a load. What's the easiest way for them to sign up and get up there? Absolutely.

Speaker 2:

Email trucking at Riesacrossamericaorg, you will get a response really fairly quickly. I probably checked that. It's funny I keep my portion, or I keep my portion or my regular email up on my work phone or my work computer. The trucking email is up on my cell phone and I just go between both because I can see the notifications pop up, which is great. So trucking at Riesacrossamericaorg is the way to get ahold of me Well we're going to have to do something special.

Speaker 1:

So I was thinking about this, as you were talking about the experience, and I want to be a part of this. I want to see this. My father was a military veteran, my grandfather was a military veteran, both in the Marines, and I would love to see this experience firsthand, maybe with a driver, like somehow, maybe you know, connect with a driver in Boston and drive up, you know, to what you call it down south, right Down east absolutely, we can make that happen.

Speaker 1:

So we need to make that happen. We'll document it. We'll have some fun with it. This needs to happen next year. We need to make this happen because I would love to document this 100%. I got to tell you when I'm going to get you in. That sounds amazing. That is so cool. I'm excited about that.

Speaker 2:

It is so cool to do it, and here's what I will say it's one of the most popular things to do. I have seen more company executives come up with a driver because they wanted to experience it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's where they were a veteran themselves.

Speaker 2:

You know, it was interesting. I met the COO of a pretty large company, one of the mega carriers, last year, who was in jeans and a hoodie and I was going. You know, hey, how are you introducing myself? You know, making sure, do you have anything you need? Let me grab you something to drink. Have you had the opportunity to go out on the first mile program? Have you met Miss Diane, one of the best parts of my driver's lounge, because she will stand there and make a wreath with every single driver that wants to make a wreath.

Speaker 1:

Wow, that's cool. So you can actually be a part of the process. That's really cool.

Speaker 2:

You get to be a part of the process and what's cool is that you take that wreath with you and a lot of people place it on you know someone's headstone that they love, so maybe your loved one isn't interred in a location that's participating you take it there, or maybe it would mean a lot to your mom, place it on you know your grandfather's headstone and they go and do that afterwards. So they have a wreath that they have personally made and Miss Diane helps them with the 10 bouquets and goes through the 10 characteristics that make up you know what we think make up a veteran and that it is all about the experience.

Speaker 2:

What I the other thing I love is that you know our founder and fam founding family, the Worcesters, are there in the driver's lounge. You will find them there all day long. They are talking to every driver. They are saying thank you, they want to find out about each driver, and that's one thing I love. I have drivers that tell me Courtney, I've never been treated so well than when I came here.

Speaker 1:

I want to do that every time it sounds like it. Well and my, you know, my grandfather was laid to rest in Leavenworth, Kansas, and I was just thinking how cool would that be to get this experience, to make a wreath and they get to go, you know, laid on my grandfather's headstone like that would just be amazing. So I'm dude, I'm all in, I can't wait. I'm so excited about that.

Speaker 2:

I know we'll have you come out.

Speaker 1:

I know which. We can do it this year. We're a little behind the eight ball this year, but next year we're going to plan this, we're going to make that happen, absolutely, but we're about five weeks away. December 16th is the date, but the transportation needs to happen before that. So, truckers, if you're out there, if you're listening, get involved. Send that email to trucking at readsacrossamericaorg. And, by the way, you're just going to have a good time working with Courtney. I'm just going to throw that out. Courtney, you're fun all the time.

Speaker 2:

I try to be. We have to have a lot of fun. Well trucking is is one of those industries where I tell people. I have the ability to laugh every single day and I have the ability to make somebody smile and that, to me, is really important, because if I can make somebody's day better or just great to start with, then I've done a good job.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely, and this is a stressful industry. We need more positivity like that. So I love the fact that you're doing that and you take that approach. It's absolutely wonderful, and I did get to see you just recently at Women in Trucking. What do you think about that event? Is that a great event?

Speaker 2:

That's such a great event. I mean, I know somebody said it was 1600 people. I think it was more than that.

Speaker 1:

It felt like more than that. Yes.

Speaker 2:

It definitely felt like more than that. There was such great energy at that conference. It is a different energy than you feel at some other conferences.

Speaker 1:

Oh, without a doubt.

Speaker 2:

And you know, there was such great collaboration, communication there, networking. Even I get to meet people that I've only talked to via email, you know, sometimes on LinkedIn, and so getting to sit there and see them. I joked my flight back to Atlanta, the gentleman I was talking to so many people because there are so many people who connect through Atlanta and this guy next to me was like are you a celebrity? And I was like, am I getting a celebrity? Not at all, like I'm sitting in the middle of a week.

Speaker 1:

Do you want my autograph? Is that what you're asking? I would say are you a transportation in?

Speaker 2:

Can you Hall? That's where it's really at it depends.

Speaker 1:

It depends Absolutely. That's awesome. The event was really good. You know, there's something I was telling my wife about this when I came back, because I love supporting the event. I have two daughters, so I want to support this event. I mean you and the women at this event and all the women in our industry are creating the opportunities for my kids someday and so I want to support that and say thank you and be a part of that. And so I got to be there. But I noticed that this event because it's 90% women 1995 probably, I didn't see a lot of guys this year. We need more guys. We need more guys to show up at this event, but 90% women. It's a little different. It's a little different. You know, there are. I think there was a puppy. So there was something. There was some sort of animal thing that was going on. I'm not sure exactly what it was. There was the spinning video.

Speaker 2:

That was kind of cool, that 360 spinning video I did, yeah, the 360 video. We don't see that at many other conferences Outstanding.

Speaker 1:

But you saw the women lining up for that. You know things that women would enjoy. But here's what else I noticed. So I was able to host three panels at the event. I've hosted panels at other shows. The attendance is so. So because you know, like the guys are too cool for school, they're out there talking or whatever. They're not going to the sessions to learn. They don't need anything to learn. You know us guys and our attitudes. What I noticed was and women in trucking the panels were full, like you know, women wanted to be in there, they wanted to learn, they wanted to be a part of it. It was just such a different vibe, it was so cool.

Speaker 2:

So much better. It is.

Speaker 2:

I agree wholeheartedly about the amount of people that are there participating, that are going to those panels. Yeah, I said it on one or two of yours. I know, michelle, a box panel was amazing. Michelle would drop and hook. I think that we, I think that women, are willing to get out there and really learn and it's not just oh, I'm here and I'm going to try to close some business deals. That's what I find about men and women really want to have a conversation and learn and go. What can I do better so I can outwork the people around me?

Speaker 1:

It's a different vibe, that's for sure. I'm sure that business deals got closed, for sure, but it's a different vibe that happens there. But I enjoy so much. You know, the women in trucking team has done a great job and I was so excited to see that you're there. How have you guys been able to form a bit of a partnership to get some awareness out through women in trucking?

Speaker 2:

We. They have been great supporters of ours. Their entire PR team and you know, at mind share behind the door. They've been great. Carleen outstanding. She's probably one of my favorite people in the world. I love just to talk side of women in trucking, because she's just so much fun.

Speaker 2:

But, also to you know being able to go. You know Jennifer Hedrick, who's taken over as president and CEO this year. She is somebody who is a great proponent, sends people over to me. You know I try to talk with her about every six weeks. You know seeing her at other shows making sure that we, you know, sit down. That partnership, I think, is so important because what they're doing is changing the world. I would love to tell you that what we do at Reese Across America changes the world as well, and we're changing both organizations. You're changing the world one person at a time, one interaction at a time, and that's why having those relationships and partnerships are so important to us. And you know I can't thank women in trucking enough for how they've supported us and continue to get our message out there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, it's incredible and you know you've thought about the woman driver experience, which you know it's statistically. I learned a lot this week. Statistically, women are significantly better drivers than men. My wife said she already knew that. I told her that stat and she goes I knew that. So that was pretty, that was pretty funny. But women are statistically better drivers than men but they often don't go into it because the experience is not really designed for them At truck stops and parking and safety, all those kinds of things. So the fact that you thought through that is awesome as well. So women drivers can get up there and grab some Reese and haul them as well, which I think is awesome.

Speaker 2:

Well, and we spent, you know, when I was on the carrier side, I spent a lot of time doing what's now DE and I, but working on. You know how do I hire more female drivers Because statistically they are safer. How I grew this and to say, hey, it's a second career for most women. They get into it because they're either husband, father, uncle someone like that was a truck driver. I sat there and one year did a panel when I was at a carrier and it broke my heart for a lady to go to get out of an abusive relationship and this gave me a home and that was, you know, for me, very eye-opening.

Speaker 2:

But I was so thankful that our industry was there and women in trucking has made such great strides to get information out there and that's why I took information that we heard last year and so, having going okay, you know what I looked at how many drivers came to Maine and how many of them were female or how many of them came and rode with their husbands because they were so excited about this load, and so I was like I've gotta make some changes here. And the fact you know that the Worcester family and Rees Across America was willing to take that feedback and really make the changes so that the experience continued to be better for everyone is just outstanding. I mean, you know, at large public companies that I worked at before, I would still be fighting the battle and talking about it, trying to get those changes to happen, and they were like, oh no, that makes sense, let's do it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's great. That is awesome. I just love it. I love the thought through that and you guys are making changes. I can't wait to hear some driver's stories. So, drivers, if you're out there and you're listening to this and you're thinking about doing it and you decide to jump in and do so, the water's warm, jump in. Would love to hear those stories of your experience, especially if you're a first time participant in Rees Across America as a driver. That's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 1:

So, according to Love it, listen, we gotta have a little fun on the show. As always, we gotta play a game today known as Wavelength. All right, wavelength. So this is a fun game that we play where we gotta try to be on the same page about something. So what's gonna happen is we're gonna put a banner up and that banner is gonna have a category and a letter, all right. So the category is obviously what we're thinking about in the letter is the first letter of that word, and we have to see if you and I can come up with the same word for that category.

Speaker 1:

It's a little crazy game, so we'll see how we do here. We'll put little tunes in the background so that we have something to kind of get the beat going. Let's do a little bit of. Let's do a little Justin Timberlake. I like this little Justin Timberlake. Come on here we go, all right. So the first one we got here for this is a food category starts with a letter H. Food category starts with a letter H. Let's think about this for a moment. All right, let's see, food category starts with a letter H. Okay, I have one, come on okay, here we go, here we go, here we go.

Speaker 1:

I'm sending it to you, I'm sending it your way Through the ether, through the vibes, through the radio waves. Today, food category that starts with H, you got one.

Speaker 2:

Not yet. I'm still thinking hold on.

Speaker 1:

Okay, because when it comes up we typically do the gong effect, which it's not very you can kind of hear it. It's not as loud as we wish it could be. Maybe the music's kind of causing that. So we should yeah, we should maybe raise it up. Okay, do you have one?

Speaker 2:

Let's go with it.

Speaker 1:

Okay, you ready. Three, two, one Hummus.

Speaker 2:

Oh hummus.

Speaker 1:

Whoa, what did you say?

Speaker 2:

I just went with healthy.

Speaker 1:

Hell, you want healthy. Okay, so not a food item. Okay, healthy food. Well, hummus is somewhat healthy, Can we count that.

Speaker 2:

How is this healthy?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's a pretty healthy food. I don't know if we can count, but I think it's good. Okay, so that was a practice run.

Speaker 2:

That was a practice run. Give me a different one.

Speaker 1:

All right, here we go. So next one, next category, is famous people that starts with B. A famous person that starts with B? I've got one. I'm ready, you got one, okay, all right, three, two. Oh, we're getting the gong. We're getting the gong. There's a, so now it's time, it's the gong. It's the gong, all right, which we need to make sure we turn it off, because otherwise it'll keep ringing. In fact, we'll just turn the loop part of this thing off, okay, so famous person starts with B three, two, one.

Speaker 2:

Bing Crosby Red Pit.

Speaker 1:

Oh, bing Crosby, that would have been good White Christmas oh.

Speaker 2:

Look, I'm in all Christmas season already.

Speaker 1:

Yeah that's right, you're in the Christmas mood. You're up there near Vermont, where you know white Christmas happened. Okay, all right, that was a good one.

Speaker 2:

It snowed there yesterday. That was a fail on my part.

Speaker 1:

That was a fail on my part. Okay, all right, let's go with the next category. Here we go. Movie that starts with S. Movie that starts with S Mm. Okay, One came to mind, but I don't know if that's the one you're thinking about. Maybe it starts with S.

Speaker 2:

This one's harder.

Speaker 1:

Are you gonna stick with the Christmas theme? That's what I'm thinking.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I like that.

Speaker 1:

I don't know if you are, though. That's the thing S.

Speaker 2:

I would venture to say look, I'm all Christmas, all the time.

Speaker 1:

Oh, but I don't have a Christmas movie that starts with S or I don't know. Give me some vibes. All right, send them away. Come on, here we go.

Speaker 2:

Just think, about it. You can always schedule appointments for it.

Speaker 1:

Give me hints now.

Speaker 2:

That's my hint.

Speaker 1:

Oh gosh, I can't think this is gonna be bad. I can't think of one. Okay, all right, we're just gonna have to go with. I'm just gonna. This isn't gonna work, but I'm gonna go with it, okay you ready? Let's do it this is all I can think of. Here we go. Three, two, one. Snow White, Santa Claus oh, that'd be so good.

Speaker 2:

I know Snow White's not a Christmas movie, but it's all I can think of no, it is all good, it is, it is all good. It is all good.

Speaker 1:

What is wrong with me that is?

Speaker 2:

the easiest one. You can schedule an appointment, like I figured. If I'm like, you can make the appointment to see Santa Claus.

Speaker 1:

Major fail on my part. Major fail that actually, I think that might've thrown me off because I was not thinking along those lines. Not your fault, but I just man. It's like I wouldn't have gotten it anyways, that's on me. Okay, let's go with the next one. What do we got? Tv show that starts with B. Oh, tv show that starts with B.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

I've got one too you ready. I've got one too you ready. See what we're going Three, two, one.

Speaker 2:

Big Bang.

Speaker 1:

Theory oh, what'd you say?

Speaker 2:

Blow Deck.

Speaker 1:

Oh sorry, I haven't seen that show. Oh man.

Speaker 2:

Listen there any bravo reality show that takes none of my brain cells. It's a win. The Big Bang is good.

Speaker 1:

Big Bang is good. That is a good show. But I've heard good things about below. What is it Below ground?

Speaker 2:

Blow Deck.

Speaker 1:

Blow Deck. I have heard good things about that show, but I have not seen it yet. So, okay, we gotta get one. Courtney, we gotta get at least one. Hopefully, people are laughing about this. Okay, a song that starts with Y oh man, oh man. A song that starts with Y, oh man.

Speaker 2:

I can stick with the Atlanta singer, the song that starts with Y.

Speaker 1:

Oh, come on. Come on, this is just not going well, Courtney. I'm failing on all fronts here. I'm just blowing it today. This is not a good start Song that starts with a Y. Why can I not think of a song that starts with Y? I can't even think of one. This is rough.

Speaker 2:

Think people from Atlanta.

Speaker 1:

I'm thinking that that's not helping.

Speaker 2:

That's because that's the only one that came to my mind, all right.

Speaker 1:

Okay, this is not gonna be it, but it's the only song I can think of. Here we go Three, two, one. You look wonderful tonight.

Speaker 2:

I was gonna say yeah, but oh sure.

Speaker 1:

Oh my gosh, I'm such a loser right now. Okay, listen, we gotta stop playing this game. This is terrible. We're done. This game is over. No more of this game. We're finished with it.

Speaker 1:

I mean we tried, we tried, we tried. We'll do better another time, but listen, most importantly today on this show. I'm so excited that you were here to talk about this. We gotta get more drivers involved with Reach Across America. Have fun with it, folks. The experience is amazing. And again, if you wanna get ahold of Courtney, make sure you reach out to her at Trucking at ReachacrossAmericaorg. When do you head up to Maine? When are you gonna be on site?

Speaker 2:

I am gonna be on site the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so I'll be start traveling up right after Thanksgiving. I was gonna go up a little bit early, but then decided I think I can hold it off. There aren't gonna be that many leave, and so I will head to the Arctic tundra at that point Again it started snowing there yesterday. I had joked.

Speaker 1:

That is so awesome man, I wish I could be there. That's awesome.

Speaker 2:

And I was like are there Clyde's tail horses that can pull this four wheel draft? Suburban as we hit.

Speaker 1:

Can you document this? Can you send us some pictures and videos that we can put out there? Make sure you send us some of your experience. That would be a really fun thing to document. Can't wait to see what it's like. I can't wait to be there Next year.

Speaker 2:

we're gonna do this, I'm gonna go up and we're gonna make this happen. You're coming next year. It's gonna be great.

Speaker 1:
