Welcome back. Our title today is The Mechanics of the Pump, Why Gasoline and Diesel Prices Rise and Fall. Part of my uh extensive experience was spending uh ten years working in the oil industry, working for an oil refiner and marketer. So I learned a little bit during that period of time. Actually, I had to learn a lot because part of my job was to work with the nation's largest retailers and convince them to buy the products and sell them. Uh, and also uh that company produced gasoline and all the other elements that come from the refining process. So I was aware of how the market worked and the ins and outs of the industry completely, where the oil was coming from, the best oil, the worst oil, uh learned about the stuff that comes from Venezuela, which is considered in the industry pretty nasty, uh, although it can be refined and there are special refiners for it uh and produce a decent product at the end. Uh but we're gonna talk about this because there is so much misinformation out there about what causes the price of gasoline at the pump to go up or to go down. Now, one of the things we're gonna mention in here is that when it you consider everything that a consumer buys during the day or during the week or during the month, the one thing that they know about the pricing is diesel fuel or gasoline, depending on what you put in your vehicle. Uh, do you remember what it costs for a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread? Or uh well, actually we knew about the eggs for a little bit because it was all over the news. But now we don't know about the eggs anymore because they're no longer eight dollars a package. But most people don't know, they're not aware. But we are all aware of gasoline prices, not just because that sign is out there, but because we use apps like you know, Gas Buddy and others to find the lowest price until prices more or less stabilize, and then we don't pay any attention to it. It's a psychology that works in Western nations, not just the United States. Other nations also post the price of their fuel. And we worry about things like five cents or or twenty cents or twenty-five cents or fifty cents uh when that price goes up or down that much at one time. And then after a while, we don't worry about it so much until the news media starts bringing it up. But we're gonna cover all of this. We want you to know uh what's really going on here. You know, it's uh you know, you probably think these big companies are gouging and all this. Well, listen to the facts here about something that we deal with all of the time. Frankly, I think every American should listen to this podcast and fully understand the dynamics of crude oil, of how much comes out of crude oil. When was the last time you uh noticed the exact price of a loaf of bread?

Oh, I have absolutely no idea.

Right. Or like a gallon of milk. I mean, the standard consumer couldn't quote those figures within, you know, fifty cents. But the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, we track that down to the absolute fraction of a penny.

Aaron Powell We really do. It's um it's wild.

Aaron Powell Yeah, we watch it glow on these massive, like 40-foot illuminated monoliths at virtually every major intersection in the country. It is, well, I'd argue it's the most public, ubiquitous, and just obsessively monitored economic indicator in American life.

Aaron Powell We base our household budgets on it, we sort of extrapolate the entire macroeconomic health of the country from it, and honestly, we frequently vote based on its trajectory. Yet despite interacting with this product every single week, you know, most of the general public treats the actual price at the pump like a like a random number generator. Trevor Burrus, Jr.

Yeah, like there's just some guy in a back room spinning a dial.

Trevor Burrus, Jr. Exactly. Just arbitrary numbers spun by faceless executives. So welcome to a custom-tailored deep dive into the intensely global, uh technologically staggering and really highly volatile mechanics of fuel pricing. Our mission today is to look completely past that roadside signage.

Aaron Powell Right. We're going behind the curtain.

Aaron Powell Exactly. We are decoding the vast architecture of, you know, commodity futures, domestic agricultural policy, thermodynamic engineering, and localized taxation that physically builds the exact price you pay for gas and diesel.

Aaron Powell And you know, that assumption of randomness you mentioned, it's actually a fascinating psychological defense mechanism.

Aaron Powell Oh, really? How so?

Well, when prices decouple from our expectations, it feels personal.

SPEAKER_03

Sure.

SPEAKER_01

Feels adversarial, right? Like the gas station's out to get you. But the numbers on that sign are actually the culmination of this ruthlessly rational, hyper-efficient sequence of global events. Every fraction of effect represents a physical or financial reality.

Aaron Powell So it's not just corporate greed pressing a button.

Aaron Powell Not at all. It could be a um a microfluctuation in the Brent crude futures market, or maybe a localized constraint in domestic refining capacity, or even just the basic inventory accounting methods of an independent retail franchisee. We just have to reverse engineer the math.

Aaron Powell Right. And to do that, I was looking through the historical data in our source material, and I realized that to understand the modern economic trap of the local gas station, we really have to look at the absolute logistical nightmare that came before it.

Oh yeah, the early days were chaotic. Trevor Burrus, Jr.

Completely. The modern expectation of, you know, continuous instantaneous fuel delivery is a total anomaly. Like pre-1913, the distribution network for early cars was basically nonexistent.

Because gasoline was literally considered trash.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. It was this volatile, highly dangerous waste byproduct of making kerosene. But then automobiles start demanding it in huge volumes, and consumers were forced to navigate this completely decentralized, unregulated mess.

You had to go to a hardware store.

SPEAKER_03

Hardware stores, blacksmiths, pharmacies. And you'd buy it in these unstandardized metal cans.

Aaron Powell And the inefficiencies, I mean the sheer public safety hazards of that era just cannot be overstated. You've got, you know, hardware store owners storing hundreds of gallons of highly combustible liquid in wooden sheds.

What could go wrong?

Right. And they're transferring it via these hand-cranked pumps into open buckets. I mean, the evaporation losses alone just destroyed any profit margins.

Exactly. The contamination from dirt and moisture routinely destroyed early carbureted engines. So the petroleum industry quickly realized hey, mass adoption of the car is impossible without a standardized, safe retail infrastructure. Trevor Burrus, Jr.

Which triggers that 1913 tipping point.

Gulf refining in Pittsburgh.

Yes. Gulf refining opens the very first purpose-built drive-in service station. And the strategic real estate shift there is just brilliant. Gulf didn't just build a safer pump, they fundamentally altered urban planning.

Aaron Powell They pulled the car off the street.

SPEAKER_03

Right. They pulled the transaction off the public street, put it onto private property, and they introduced the architectural canopy to protect the driver from the weather.

Trevor Burrus, which is standard everywhere now.

Yeah. They standardized the dispensing equipment, which meant they could suddenly measure and price the gasoline with exact precision. And that physical infrastructure paved the way for what the sources call the mid-century service model. Trevor Burrus, Jr.

Golden Age.

The 1950s and 60s. The station operated as this highly orchestrated, localized monopoly on automotive care. Uniform attendants weren't just, you know, dispensing fuel, they were conducting rapid fire preventative maintenance.

Check your oil, wash your windshield, sir.

Trevor Burrus Exactly. And the economics of that specific era are crucial to understand because they form the baseline for everything that goes wrong later.

Aaron Powell Right. Because during that window, the gasoline itself was not the primary profit center.

Aaron Powell Wait, really? It was just a side hustle.

SPEAKER_01

Basically, yeah. The fuel acted as a loss leader. It was a volume-driven lure to compel you onto the property every week. The station owner's actual margin came from the repair base. You know, replacing fan belts, changing the oil, selling tires, doing tune-ups. It was a business model predicated entirely on local trust and, frankly, the mechanical unreliability of mid-century cars.

Okay, so it's like, are you saying the gas pump is basically just the blockbuster movie designed to get me into the building, but the station owner is really making all their money on the popcorn and soda inside?

SPEAKER_01

That is a perfect analogy, yes. But the data shows that whole ecosystem collapsing under the weight of several macroeconomic pressures in the nineteen seven.

But the seventies were rough.

You have the OPEC oil embargoes of nineteen seventy-three and nineteen seventy-nine physically constraining the supply. That introduces the concept of absolute fuel scarcity to the American public. Yeah. Suddenly people are sitting in two hour lines.

And the psychology shifts instantly.

Overnight. It goes from I want excellent preventative maintenance to I need the absolute lowest price per gallon right now.

And cars were getting better too.

Exactly. You get electronic fuel injection, more durable components, the maintenance intervals stretch out. Consumers just didn't need a mechanic every single time they needed a tank of gas.

And labor costs were soaring.

The stagflation era. Paying a team of four guys to wash windows and check dipsticks while you're selling a price gapped commodity, it just became financially ruinous.

So the independent owners are getting squeezed.

Squeezed hard. Between fixed wholesale fuel costs, shrinking repair revenue, and huge payrolls. The only survival mechanism was to strip the labor out of the transaction entirely.

Hence the self-service pump.

Exactly. It was born out of sheer margin preservation, shifting the physical burden of pumping the gas onto the consumer. But when you eliminate the repair base, you create this massive revenue vacuum.

Which leads directly to the modern convenience store pivot. If the owner can no longer monetize the mechanical failure of the car.

They have to monetize the biological needs of the driver.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. They replace the hydraulic lifts with refrigeration units. The source material outlines this brutal reality today. The fuel is still that low margin, high volume lure. The entire economic survival of the franchisee relies on you crossing the threshold of those glass doors.

Right. They need you to buy the high margin stuff. Tobacco, lottery tickets, highly processed foods, fountain drinks.

So the modern retail fuel footprint is essentially a highly optimized real estate play masquerading as an energy business.

That is exactly what it is. And because the retail margin on a gallon of gas is often measured in like single-digit pennies after you account for credit card swipe fees.

Oh, right. The credit card companies take a huge cut.

SPEAKER_01

Huge. So the station owner is highly exposed. They are fundamentally vulnerable to wholesale commodity spikes because they rely on predictable consumer cash flow inside the store.

Let me guess. If gas gets too expensive, I don't buy the Snickers bar.

SPEAKER_01

Precisely. If the absolute price of fuel rises too high, your discretionary spending evaporates. You still buy the gas because you have to get to work, but you skip the coffee and snacks. So the station owner's profitability collapses, even as their gross revenue from fuel sales artificially inflates.

Wow. Okay, so let's examine the actual physical product that's driving all that foot traffic. Transforming raw crude oil into consumer grade motor fuel requires an industrial process so complex it I mean the sources basically say it borders on thermodynamic alchemy.

Alchemy is a good word for it.

The baseline metric we always hear about is the forty-two-gallon barrel of crude oil. But the sources highlight this massive public misconception about volume. Like a refinery does not just filter a 42 gallon barrel and spit out forty-two gallons of refined product.

No, it actually spans.

Yeah. It expands to roughly 45 gallons. How is that physically possible? Are we just creating matter?

It feels like it, right? But it's a direct result of the specific chemical engineering used in modern refineries, primarily this process called catalytic cracking and fractional distillation.

Catalytic cracking, that sounds intense.

SPEAKER_01

It is. See, crude oil isn't just one uniform substance, it's this complex, chaotic mixture of hydrocarbon chains. Some are long and heavy, some are short and light. The heavy long chain hydrocarbons, the stuff that would normally just become asphalt or heavy bunker fuel for ships, they subject those to extreme heat, pressurized environments, and specialized chemical catalysts.

And that breaks them apart.

Exactly. It physically cleaves the long molecular chains into shorter, lighter molecules, primarily octane and heptane, which is what makes up gasoline.

Okay, I follow.

And because these newly formed short chain molecules are significantly less dense than the original heavy crude, they literally take up more physical space. You're manufacturing lighter matter from heavier matter, hence the expansion from forty-two to forty-five gallons.

That is wild. And those forty-five gallons represent this massive spectrum of industrial utility, right? Like we fixate on the gasoline part, but the distillation tower yields a staggering array of petrochemical feedstocks.

Oh yeah. Naphtha, for instance. It's the foundational building block for global manufacturing.

Aaron Powell The sources basically argue that the structural integrity of the modern supply chain relies entirely on this chemical disassembly. We're extracting synthetic polymers for medical equipment.

Elastomers for vehicle tires.

Fertilizers for agriculture, pharmaceutical precursors, the polycarbonate plastics in our phones.

You really can't bypass the integration of crude oil into the physical world. Burning gas in an engine is just the most visible application of the barrel.

Right. But if we stick just to the retail motor fuel for a second, we have to talk about the massive agricultural intervention in the chemical profile.

Ah, yes. The renewable fuel standard mandate.

SPEAKER_03

This blew my mind. The source material explicitly states that approximately ninety-eight percent of the gasoline sold in the United States is E ten, which means a blend containing ten percent and hydrous ethanol. Right. The sheer scale of the agricultural infrastructure required to sustain that mandate is just staggering. We are apparently diverting between thirty-five and forty percent of the entire domestic corn crop specifically for fermentation and distillation into motor fuel. Wait, so technically ten percent of my gas tank is agriculture.

Yep, exactly.

Does that mean a drought in Iowa or a change in farming policy directly affects my morning commute?

100% it does. The integration of ethanol fundamentally altered the economic vulnerability of our domestic fuel supply.

How so?

SPEAKER_01

Well, historically, retail fuel prices were tethered exclusively to heavy industrial refining and the geopolitics of oil producing nations. Right.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Like wars in the Middle East or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. But by mandating a 10% organic agricultural blend, policymakers inextricably linked the price of your commute to the localized climate volatility of the American Midwest.

Aaron Ross Powell So we've basically created a dual front vulnerability matrix.

That's a great way to put it.

SPEAKER_03

Because like the continuous flow model of modern refineries means they operate with very little local storage capacity, right? They need this constant, uninterrupted equilibrium. So if a category four hurricane makes landfall on the Gulf Coast, the sources call it the PAD3 refining district.

Right. The Gulf Coast is PA three.

SPEAKER_03

Those multi-billion dollar complexes have to initiate emergency shutdowns, which instantly chokes the regional supply of the petroleum-based stock.

But then simultaneously, you could have a severe summer drought across Illinois that degrades the corn yield, spiking the commodity price of the ethanol component.

Front two. And we really need to emphasize the inelasticity of that refining infrastructure. A refinery is not a car factory where management can just hit a button and idle the assembly line for the weekend.

It's like a living organism.

It is a highly pressurized, continuous flow chemical organism operating at extreme temperatures. When these facilities undergo scheduled maintenance, the industry calls it a turnaround, it is literally akin to performing open hard surgery on a living system.

A turnaround.

Yeah, they have to reroute millions of gallons of volatile, highly combustible feedstock under pressure, all while sequentially replacing degraded catalytic units and inspecting pressure vessels.

That's incredibly dangerous.

Very. And a single major turnaround removes hundreds of thousands of barrels of daily refining capacity from the regional market. Because the system runs on just-in-time inventory, any localized constraint immediately drains the regional reserves.

Which forces wholesale prices upward, even if the global supply of raw crude oil is sitting at record highs.

Exactly. You could be drowning in crude oil, but if the refinery is down, gas prices spike.

Which brings us perfectly to the foundational macroeconomic layer. Right. The crude oil itself. The sources allocate roughly 50 to 60 percent of the final retail pump price directly to the acquisition cost of the unrefined crude.

Right. It's the biggest chunk of it.

And there is the specific mathematical heuristic detailed in the data, the 2.4 cent rule, which brilliantly illustrates the direct translation of commodity futures to the physical pump. Can you break that down?

Aaron Powell It's actually really elegant arithmetic because the standardized barrel contains exactly 42 gallons, any $1 fluctuation in the global spot price of that barrel distributes directly across the volume.

So you just divide by 42?

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. $1 divided by 42 yields approximately 2.4 cents. Therefore, every sustained $1 increase in the commodity price of crude directly adds 2.4 cents to the baseline cost of a gallon of unrefined gasoline.

Okay, so if institutional traders on Wall Street push the price of West Texas Intermediate up by $10 a barrel over a week.

The underlying cost basis for your retail product automatically jumps by 24 cents.

Instantly.

SPEAKER_01

Instantly. Entirely independent of refining, transportation, or tax layers.

Okay, but I really want to examine the disconnect between our domestic production volume and that specific pricing model. Because the United States has fundamentally altered global energy markets with fracking, right?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, absolutely. Hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling.

SPEAKER_03

We are routinely hitting record domestic extraction volumes. Yet there is this pervasive consumer expectation that this localized abundance should translate into a protected, artificially low domestic retail price. Like if I grew tomatoes in my backyard, but the law said I had to sell and buy them based on the global tomato index. If a frost wipes out the crop in Europe, my backyard tomatoes suddenly cost me more to eat.
