There are so many ways we've inherited beliefs about how we should be. And then"},{"startTime":544.798,"endTime":549.838,"body":"you can talk about attachment styles and all these things. So I thought I'd share a little bit about"},{"startTime":549.838,"endTime":556.088,"body":"some beliefs I've been working through for many years. I'm making them my companions that when,"},{"startTime":556.638,"endTime":561.438,"body":"these beliefs pop up, they are little companions saying knock, knock, knock on the door. Hey,"},{"startTime":561.438,"endTime":569.678,"body":"something needs to be looked at and tended to in your life. So one of the primary beliefs I've"},{"startTime":569.678,"endTime":576.318,"body":"inherited is that my worth is tied to how much I accomplish."},{"startTime":577.441,"endTime":584.535,"body":"And the reason I teach that this is not actually true is because it is a belief I have inherited."},{"startTime":584.691,"endTime":592.371,"body":"So this idea that comes from the Industrial Revolution where human beings were literal"},{"startTime":592.371,"endTime":597.371,"body":"factory workers and their means of value of being able to keep the job and being paid"},{"startTime":597.371,"endTime":601.783,"body":"was about how many widgets or things they could put together in an hour."},{"startTime":602.386,"endTime":606.356,"body":"I have ancestors who worked in factories."},{"startTime":607.193,"endTime":612.571,"body":"My great-grandmother, Philomena Schleuker, worked in a shrimp factory in New Orleans"},{"startTime":612.571,"endTime":615.313,"body":"at the age of six with her brothers and sisters."},{"startTime":616.391,"endTime":622.074,"body":"And so when I think about this struggle I sometimes get into around a real addiction,"},{"startTime":622.651,"endTime":628.835,"body":"to crossing off as many things on the list as possible to feel like I did good."},{"startTime":629.06,"endTime":633.003,"body":"My partner Tim and I both have this thing where we go like, oh, it was a good day."},{"startTime":633.391,"endTime":635.731,"body":"What made it a good day? I did a lot."},{"startTime":636.131,"endTime":639.891,"body":"And sometimes that's great. We're both generators and human design,"},{"startTime":639.891,"endTime":647.866,"body":"which means we have to move energy through our bodies in order to rest. So doing feels good."},{"startTime":648.011,"endTime":654.617,"body":"And if I have this belief that my worth is tied to how much I accomplish on days that I do need rest,"},{"startTime":655.051,"endTime":659.461,"body":"on days that I am unwell, on days that I have a small baby in my arms,"},{"startTime":659.771,"endTime":662.368,"body":"on days that I am grieving,"},{"startTime":663.211,"endTime":667.811,"body":"if I still have that belief as true that my worth is tied to how much I accomplished,"},{"startTime":667.811,"endTime":670.155,"body":"then I feel what? unworthy."},{"startTime":671.524,"endTime":676.734,"body":"Worthless even. And I've even heard the words come out of my mouth and come in the mouth of"},{"startTime":676.734,"endTime":686.174,"body":"family members of I feel worthless because I'm not doing enough. Which is just such a curious thing."},{"startTime":686.269,"endTime":696.734,"body":"When we are of a living world where plants and animals show us every day, because they're not"},{"startTime":696.734,"endTime":706.174,"body":"gone. There may be less of them, but they are not gone. That fallow periods are normal. That rest is"},{"startTime":706.174,"endTime":716.715,"body":"an inherent part of energy regeneration. I even think about the idea of rest and digest. The"},{"startTime":717.054,"endTime":723.254,"body":"parasympathetic nervous system responds that in order for us to have energy to, if you think of"},{"startTime":723.254,"endTime":729.174,"body":"us as animals, we need energy to hunt, right? To eat so that we can keep surviving in order"},{"startTime":729.174,"endTime":735.414,"body":"to that we must rest and digest. Digest what we eat, digest what we've experienced in order to."},{"startTime":736.294,"endTime":746.614,"body":"Respond again. Otherwise we run out of energy. And how us humans in this industrialized time"},{"startTime":746.614,"endTime":753.094,"body":"where we've forgotten our animal bodies and we've forgotten our seasonal cyclical nature."},{"startTime":753.094,"endTime":758.494,"body":"I remember in graduate school, which was a pretty progressive sustainable business,"},{"startTime":758.494,"endTime":765.214,"body":"green program, my professor who was teaching regenerative systems said to me,"},{"startTime":765.214,"endTime":773.654,"body":"I'll sleep when I'm dead. I thought, okay, wait, what? But I'm pretty sure the living world sleeps."},{"startTime":773.654,"endTime":780.254,"body":"I'm pretty sure the living world rests. I'm pretty sure the living world has inhales as much as it"},{"startTime":780.254,"endTime":787.574,"body":"has exhales. So I find when I start to believe that thought that my worth is tied to how much"},{"startTime":787.574,"endTime":794.454,"body":"I accomplish and I feel myself in that sort of pre-burnout pattern of feeling addicted to doing"},{"startTime":794.454,"endTime":802.454,"body":"too much and getting tired and not allowing myself to rest, not allowing myself to feel okay and safe"},{"startTime":802.454,"endTime":810.374,"body":"and regulated and grounded, even when my to-do list, which was never ever realistic from the"},{"startTime":810.374,"endTime":817.974,"body":"beginning to leave it unchecked off. I tell myself that I am an animal being of this living world."},{"startTime":819.449,"endTime":825.93,"body":"And I deserve an inhale and that is good and healthy. So there's that. Another inherited"},{"startTime":826.138,"endTime":835.939,"body":"belief that comes up for me is if there is disharmony, it's up to me to appease and fix it."},{"startTime":836.643,"endTime":842.899,"body":"So I find this one to be pretty interesting in the realm of community, around true community being"},{"startTime":842.899,"endTime":850.499,"body":"one that can actually hold conflict and how I was not raised in a very conflict driven household,"},{"startTime":850.499,"endTime":857.939,"body":"but I was raised in a household that valued harmony. Meaning that if conflict or disharmony,"},{"startTime":858.636,"endTime":867.539,"body":"appeared in my space, it felt unsafe or it felt not okay and I would take it personally. And I"},{"startTime":867.539,"endTime":869.826,"body":"I sometimes still run into this."},{"startTime":870.079,"endTime":877.079,"body":"I actually ran into it very recently on Instagram and watching what comes up for me in those experiences"},{"startTime":877.079,"endTime":879.701,"body":"of, well, I have to fix it."},{"startTime":880.139,"endTime":883.383,"body":"I have to make it safe."},{"startTime":883.839,"endTime":888.479,"body":"And oftentimes what that means is I abandon myself. I abandon boundaries."},{"startTime":888.479,"endTime":896.579,"body":"I abandon values I've set. I've abandoned promises I've made to myself around my time"},{"startTime":896.733,"endTime":901.072,"body":"and what I will and will not do and my own feelings."},{"startTime":903.314,"endTime":909.192,"body":"Because what becomes primary, and this is also very much related to anxious attachers,"},{"startTime":909.299,"endTime":913.64,"body":"which I am one, is to create harmony again."},{"startTime":914.299,"endTime":917.952,"body":"And so I've been really looking at this way of, How can I?"},{"startTime":919.158,"endTime":925.888,"body":"Be in partnership with myself and with my nervous system even when there is disharmony,"},{"startTime":925.888,"endTime":932.448,"body":"because that is also true of the living world of tension, leaning into and living into tension."},{"startTime":933.544,"endTime":941.808,"body":"That tension also is what creates new life. Tension is the catalyst for innovation."},{"startTime":943.464,"endTime":950.408,"body":"For things that we could never possibly have imagined in the framework in which we're"},{"startTime":950.408,"endTime":956.208,"body":"observing the tension. And this has been a really humbling experience for me because I took a lot"},{"startTime":956.208,"endTime":963.528,"body":"of pride for a lot of my life in being an appeaser, in being, I'd say, a conflict mediator. I even"},{"startTime":963.528,"endTime":972.568,"body":"thought I would become a mediator in life. Even in college, what I really aspired to work on was"},{"startTime":972.568,"endTime":978.208,"body":"to work for international service and work in the Middle East to help resolve that conflict,"},{"startTime":978.208,"endTime":982.328,"body":"which is beautiful in many ways. And also, I don't know if I could have survived that."},{"startTime":982.328,"endTime":989.808,"body":"I definitely would have burned out doing that. I'm learning as I get older, as I approach midlife,"},{"startTime":989.808,"endTime":997.448,"body":"that conflict is inherent and does not necessarily mean, depends on the conflict,"},{"startTime":997.505,"endTime":1007.288,"body":"does not necessarily mean that I am unsafe. And if I can build my capacity and my ability to feed"},{"startTime":1007.288,"endTime":1016.568,"body":"myself what I need in order to expand my nervous system capacity to feel safe and regulated and"},{"startTime":1016.568,"endTime":1023.288,"body":"grounded, then that will make me a more responsive and resilient community member, a better tender"},{"startTime":1023.288,"endTime":1032.533,"body":"of myself and of my family and of my work. So there's that. Okay, one more inherited belief."},{"startTime":1032.866,"endTime":1038.042,"body":"That I've been contending with for many years is I am an imposter."},{"startTime":1038.879,"endTime":1046.209,"body":"It can't possibly be true what they're saying about me. I don't wonder if any of you have had this experience"},{"startTime":1046.209,"endTime":1053.429,"body":"where someone is saying something to you, pouring on compliments, pouring on gratitude,"},{"startTime":1054.169,"endTime":1059.569,"body":"affirming all the things they see in you that maybe you've dreamed of someone saying"},{"startTime":1059.569,"endTime":1064.005,"body":"and the internal dialogue within you is that's actually not true."},{"startTime":1064.289,"endTime":1070.333,"body":"And you give the sort of blank empty, thank you, thank you so much."},{"startTime":1070.389,"endTime":1073.115,"body":"And inside you're like, that's not true."},{"startTime":1075.309,"endTime":1083.109,"body":"That inner critic, that inner doubter is tricky, tricky. And I really found that I experienced this"},{"startTime":1083.109,"endTime":1087.798,"body":"when my book, Root and Ritual came out, came out November, 2021."},{"startTime":1087.929,"endTime":1093.229,"body":"And there was such a build, many years, two and a half years of putting this book out"},{"startTime":1093.229,"endTime":1100.829,"body":"the world and what I really desired was witness. What I really desired was an experience of being"},{"startTime":1100.829,"endTime":1109.309,"body":"seen and affirmed for this work, this hard work I'd done, pandemic, pregnant and all. And I found"},{"startTime":1109.309,"endTime":1117.629,"body":"that I was surprised with my internal dialogue around what people were giving me, which was"},{"startTime":1117.703,"endTime":1127.731,"body":"praise and gratitude and beautiful feedback in all ways and really seeking out evidence"},{"startTime":1127.869,"endTime":1134.109,"body":"of me being an imposter. And that's a sneaky one that comes up. And what I know to do when that"},{"startTime":1134.109,"endTime":1141.149,"body":"comes up is find another part of myself to partner with. Parts work has been so helpful to me and"},{"startTime":1141.149,"endTime":1145.025,"body":"seeing like, well, that's part of myself. It's a part of myself that wants to believe that. I feel,"},{"startTime":1145.682,"endTime":1152.429,"body":"like that is very much inherited from my lineage and very much inherited from being a marginalized"},{"startTime":1152.429,"endTime":1159.789,"body":"person, being a woman in a patriarchal culture, and really reinforcing this belief that I'm not"},{"startTime":1159.789,"endTime":1161.499,"body":"I'm not good enough and I need to be saved."},{"startTime":1162.795,"endTime":1168.665,"body":"And at some point, that might have been true, the saving part for many of my ancestors who lived in"},{"startTime":1168.746,"endTime":1174.645,"body":"way more patriarchal, dangerous times. And it's not true for me. It's not true for me because"},{"startTime":1174.645,"endTime":1180.645,"body":"there's another part of myself that is a champion for my work that is looking at myself right now in"},{"startTime":1180.645,"endTime":1187.765,"body":"the computer because I'm filming myself recording this, looking into my own eyes saying, that shit"},{"startTime":1187.765,"endTime":1199.605,"body":"ain't true. Everything you have created has been a product of deep work and wisdom and,"},{"startTime":1200.137,"endTime":1208.32,"body":"celebration. And I celebrate myself. So the imposter one really comes up for me often."},{"startTime":1209.365,"endTime":1215.685,"body":"And this is my way of segueing into talking about our seasonal cyclical nature. The imposter"},{"startTime":1215.685,"endTime":1220.685,"body":"really comes up for me during certain times of my cycle."},{"startTime":1222.845,"endTime":1230.951,"body":"Certain times of my cycle when my self doubt and my inner critic and my beliefs around my worth,"},{"startTime":1232.685,"endTime":1238.905,"body":"sort of flare and that's for me, late luteal, which is right before I bleed."},{"startTime":1238.905,"endTime":1242.483,"body":"If you are someone who bleeds, maybe you have something similar."},{"startTime":1243.525,"endTime":1247.246,"body":"And I find I have to do some serious tending to myself. So I was talking about tools."},{"startTime":1247.465,"endTime":1254.425,"body":"One of them is to consume less media around those times. So I see all these beliefs when they pop up"},{"startTime":1254.425,"endTime":1258.453,"body":"as little sign posts, little white flags"},{"startTime":1258.552,"endTime":1262.63,"body":"from all the parts of myself saying we need care."},{"startTime":1262.745,"endTime":1268.536,"body":"And so one of the ways I can care for myself is not give those parts of myself any food,"},{"startTime":1268.725,"endTime":1270.084,"body":"not feed the monster."},{"startTime":1270.465,"endTime":1278.265,"body":"But one of the main sources of nourishment to the monster is social media, is my reality shows that I enjoy,"},{"startTime":1279.105,"endTime":1284.725,"body":"is blogs and emails that I read, and it's not necessarily one kind of thing."},{"startTime":1284.725,"endTime":1286.739,"body":"It's just really, I need space."},{"startTime":1287.485,"endTime":1292.145,"body":"And it's really hard when you're addicted. It's like actually it is that simple and I find that I am more suspicious of"},{"startTime":1356.912,"endTime":1362.832,"body":"the complicated things. Take these three pills, wake up every morning, do 10 sun salutations,"},{"startTime":1362.832,"endTime":1368.672,"body":"no shade on yoga, and then da da da da da. Actually, what we're craving is to slow down"},{"startTime":1368.672,"endTime":1376.131,"body":"the fire hose experience of life. And it's right there, even if you're in a city."},{"startTime":1395.261,"endTime":1400.512,"body":"And so I was feeling kind of buzzy before I was recording this. I was starting to get a little"},{"startTime":1400.512,"endTime":1407.872,"body":"self-doubt like what do I have to share and I have this feed that I have to give to our chickens."},{"startTime":1408.962,"endTime":1415.372,"body":"We have backyard chickens and we give them compost, like certain food waste we can give them."},{"startTime":1415.372,"endTime":1420.412,"body":"And so we have two composts, one for regular green waste and one for kitchen scraps."},{"startTime":1421.467,"endTime":1427.692,"body":"And my chickens live up a hill and I sometimes get kind of lazy and like I don't want to go up that"},{"startTime":1427.692,"endTime":1434.652,"body":"hill. And my head was buzzy and I just thought, you know what, right now is a really good idea."},{"startTime":1435.393,"endTime":1440.434,"body":"It's a good time to feed the chickens. So I grabbed the chicken slop as we call it,"},{"startTime":1441.032,"endTime":1446.277,"body":"I walked up the hill and that's when I discovered that the camellias are blooming."},{"startTime":1446.552,"endTime":1448.095,"body":"I brought one with me right now."},{"startTime":1449.832,"endTime":1457.818,"body":"That smells so good. I certainly am. And I find the movement of blood,"},{"startTime":1543.204,"endTime":1551.362,"body":"through my body and the contraction of my muscles. And I just ordered a walking pad for my desk. So"},{"startTime":1551.362,"endTime":1555.442,"body":"maybe next time I'm recording this episode, you'll hear me huffing and puffing. No, I would never do"},{"startTime":1555.442,"endTime":1562.522,"body":"do that to you. That would drive me crazy. But movement, movement is the medicine for so many"},{"startTime":1562.522,"endTime":1567.762,"body":"of us. I have a friend, Jenny Meir, who goes on a hike every day. And she says, I have to, I have to"},{"startTime":1567.762,"endTime":1572.522,"body":"in order to get right in my head. I have to in order to get right when she serves clients and"},{"startTime":1572.522,"endTime":1578.322,"body":"she's a medicine woman. And she's just like, that is the way I can show up. And I have made it a practice every night."},{"startTime":1717.641,"endTime":1722.304,"body":"I had to sort of contend with my beliefs around gender roles to realize that making it a practice"},{"startTime":1722.304,"endTime":1728.484,"body":"every night of cooking dinner for my family was deeply helpful to my nervous system and"},{"startTime":1728.484,"endTime":1737.724,"body":"to quieting those loud talking parts of myself to remember that I am a human being, not a"},{"startTime":1737.724,"endTime":1744.204,"body":"machine in an animal body who knows how to nourish herself. And that's taken me on a whole journey of"},{"startTime":1744.204,"endTime":1752.684,"body":"like meal planning and actually getting good at grocery shopping and actually looking in my fridge"},{"startTime":1752.684,"endTime":1760.204,"body":"and my pantry and learning how to not waste food because food is precious and not everyone has an"},{"startTime":1760.204,"endTime":1766.044,"body":"abundance of it. And it's been an important practice for me to feed myself and my family,"},{"startTime":1766.044,"endTime":1769.323,"body":"also having a child right? I'm in charge of feeding her."},{"startTime":1770.989,"endTime":1778.519,"body":"And growing her bones and her organs and her digestive system. And I'm like,"},{"startTime":1778.519,"endTime":1785.399,"body":"why take that very seriously? Why can't I take that as seriously for myself? I will. So much of these moments where our beliefs take us on is because were alone."},{"startTime":1886.065,"endTime":1890.635,"body":"It's because we're alone or we don't have a lot of space or capacity to take it from our brains,"},{"startTime":1891.286,"endTime":1896.635,"body":"our heads, and move it out. There's the ritual activity of moving something out,"},{"startTime":1897.308,"endTime":1904.155,"body":"of sweeping something out, of burning something, of blowing it, of throwing it away from you."},{"startTime":1905.05,"endTime":1909.755,"body":"And we being the ritual vessels of doing the same when we move things out of us,"},{"startTime":1909.755,"endTime":1916.915,"body":"screaming it, whispering it, blowing it, just speaking it. And so realizing when those belief"},{"startTime":1916.915,"endTime":1923.355,"body":"systems really emerge, when those thought patterns are spiraling and I can't move through it, and I"},{"startTime":1923.355,"endTime":1932.835,"body":"find it holding back my body, my energy, my work, my relationships to speak it aloud in spaces where"},{"startTime":1932.835,"endTime":1938.195,"body":"it's named that that can happen.
