Welcome back to the Next Step Fantasy Football Podcast. My name is Jake, and I'm once again joined by my friend Adam. Adam, how are you?

Oh good. I am good. I am thinking about football. Football's coming up. College football, high school football, NFL. Just uh feeling feeling good about the football season on the horizon sooner than we think.

Oh, it's good. It also means it'll be August, which means it's draft season. It is. We have been gone a few weeks here. Life got busy, you know. But we plan on putting out an episode each week this month. Um we're gonna do some mocks today. But first, we have some NFL news.

What is that noise, Adam? I'm doing a little laundry. Uh laundry day.

I was gonna say, I'm like, there's no way they're not hearing that. That's okay. Laundry's good. We don't want you to stink, Adam. Don't want to be stinky, no. Adam, Adam coming straight back from St. Louis, right?

All right. Um big the big thing as of today, training camp has started for all teams, which is exciting, which means injuries. Um, Ricky Pearsall, the wide receiver for the 49ers. His knee is inflamed, it's swelling. Not good. He went down last year with a knee injury. There's talk that he might be shut down for the whole year already. And if they're already talking about that, no bueno. Woof, man.

Just just sad for him. Sad for Pearsall lovers like myself, and uh just uh bad deal. Don't want your knee to be inflamed like that. I want it to be uh a normal knee, folks. That's my medical take of the day.

Medical take of the day. Uh means Mike Evans to the moon. He's the next man up. Let's go, Mike. Next man up, and then their first round pick, uh Desan uh Stribling. I can never say that name. Stribling um would be the next guy up there, too. So I mean the rookie is definitely someone who will need to be drafted if Ricky Pearsall's going down, that's for sure. Yeah, and and then Brandon Ayuk is still just off his rocker.

Yeah, he's just just talking about how he's gonna he's going to be a commander, yet we're just all patiently waiting.

He's just you know, honestly, Jake, this fires me up a little bit because you see cautionary tale after cautionary tale of these prima donna receivers that want the bag, they get the bag, and then they go off their rocker. And it's like either A, he needs medical help, and I hope he gets it, B, he's just stupid, or C, I don't know. So I'm hoping it's A.

Um, will you draft him? Like I would like in the last round of your draft, would you just like why not? Take a flyer?

Yeah, on that guy? Yeah, yeah, sure, why not?

Yeah, I was gonna say, I'm I'm a big proponent of the whole don't draft it. If you're playing kicker in defense, don't draft one.

And then pick one up for like right before you're gonna play, like right before week one. Right. Because you never know. Brandon Ike's a great one. Take him instead of a random kicker, and then if it's nothing, he's still not playing, come week one, dump him, pick up your kicker. Especially if you're drafting earlier on in August.

Well, here I sit, so I, you know, crazier things have happened. Uh also, uh, Kyle Shanahan got in a car accident. He did. Did you hear the wild story that? Yeah. So for you listeners that don't know, he got the other guy got blamed initially for the for the wreck. And he eventually comes down. You know, kudos to Kyle Shanahan for saying this. He's like, it was definitely my fault. I'm sorry. Like, that other guy doesn't deserve the blame. My fault um was allegedly looking for his phone. So cautionary tale there, folks. Not fun for the guy on the receiving end of it.

So um, yeah, it's certainly possible he might coach something to keep an eye on. He's a good coach, so it's like it could matter.

I mean ultimately sounds like he'll be there, uh allegedly.

Uh ultimately, though, I mean, even if he's not there, you're still gonna start your guys. So uh, all right, that's all I really got for news right now. Nothing huge. I'm hoping there aren't any big injuries in the coming weeks, but we will keep you informed. Um, we're gonna do some mock drafts. We're gonna do two of them. Uh we're gonna do two of them. We're gonna draft from different spots each time, and hopefully we can help you guys in your drafts. So, Adam, where are you drafting from in this first one? I have pick three. I am sitting at pick ten. Adam, you have the first actual pick in this. Do you agree that uh Gibbs and Robinson go first? Oh my god.

Uh yes, I do think they will. Do you have any problem with Chase or Puka? I mean, you talked about having JSN really high. I mean, it's a horse piece between all three of them. I'd be happy with either. There they go. Um guaranteed Robinson's gone. He is gone. So you're up here, you got 30 seconds. I am gonna go ahead and take Don't do that. Sorry, what that.

I you know, I I don't have a problem with it. I think all three of them are in a tier to themselves. The Jamar Chase, the Puka. Yep, they are in a tier of themselves, and that's all pretty close.

I think you know, if you reach and take St. Brown, that'd be something more worth talking about. Right. Um, but I don't really have a problem. Unless you're in love with them, which again, like, yeah, it's it is what it is. Um you've talked about how you think that they will finish, he will finish as the wide receiver one this year again.

Yes. I I just I do. Um obviously Sam Darnold, I heard an interesting take. Like, he's he's more dangerous than you think because his OC left, his quarterback coach left, two offensive coaches right there, and he still had a lot of turnovers last year. So it's like is Sam Darnold gonna regress to the mean.

Um, so after you uh chase Puka, McCaffrey, St. Brown, Taylor, and Cook, and I'm gonna finish off the first round. Uh, I'm looking at receivers. I think that next tier of receivers, CeeDee Lamb, Jamar Jefferson. Um that they're kind of in their own before we break to like Nico Collins and Drake London. Uh, I'm gonna actually go ahead. We are doing a uh two-quarter, or I'm sorry, two receiver, two running back uh league. I'm gonna take one, I'm gonna take one receiver, one running back. I went with CeeDee Lamb, I think he was hurt all last year. Rebounce back. He has that uh wide receiver one upside. Up I mean, we've seen it before. And then I'm going to on this one, I'm gonna go receiver again. I'm gonna take Jamar Jefferson, also has wide receiver one upside. Um I just don't think you can go wrong. I think Jamar Jefferson or Justin Jefferson, sorry, uh bounces back really well. We've talked about how we think that um how we think that Kyler Murray comes back really well.

Um I like the wraparound there. I I honestly when you wrap around like that in a snake draft, if you pick a receiver or running back, I I think you should pick a running back or receiver again and just have double up. I believe you have that in the home league that we'll be drafting at some point. That's why I picked that that pick, man. I I just uh like the wraparound.

So do you want to give the people some insight? I know you probably don't want to tell me, but like if it's your thing, do you go are you look gonna take two receivers like I did? Or are you oh Adam, you're up, sorry.

Yep, and and right now I'm gonna do it uh for this mock as well. I could go Hampton here for running back needs, but I'm gonna go ahead and pick against my better judgment, Drake London. Uh, even though you know he could be really good. So I've heard a lot of good things. Uh I got B plus for that grade, I guess.

So you know, Drake London just produces even with bad quarterbacks, and man, someday he'll get a good one.

Someday I'll get a good one. Someday he's gonna get a little surprise this year. Maybe one of these days. Yeah. Um but I like I like that uh JSN London there, you know, just two good receivers right away.

I think also it's important, you know, we're mocking on Yahoo right now, very different than Sleeper. Um we could be mocking with some bots and stuff, but we figured we should do it with uh people. Um I mean, I know like AJ Brown is behind Pickens, behind Collins, behind Devonta Smith, um in Yahoo's rankings, and that is not how it is in Sleeper. So pay attention, you know, how this is why you should have your own rankings, right? For sure. All right. Um, Adam, you're up again. Nico Collins and then AJ Brown went and Amarian Hampton and Brock Bowers.

Running receivers there. So now I'm gonna take my boy uh because I would like a running back here, but they're all kind of a reach at this point. I'm gonna go ahead and take Trey McBride, which I think is a good value pick uh at this spot.

Do you yeah, yeah. I mean, this is a spot that's always interesting because do people start pushing for running backs?

Or quarterbacks, you know, or quarterbacks.

We haven't seen one yet off the board, but I mean the next running back on here is Jeremiah Love, which is fine. He's he's good, you know, but it's it's a little scary, right? Um what is going on with your respiratory system, sir? I don't know, man. Jog three miles, feel feel great, I thought. Josh Allen goes, so we have our first quarterback. Um, here comes the run. Here comes the run. So I'll be up with this next pick. Um, I'm looking at running backs. I have Lamb and Jefferson. Um and then T. Higgins goes, Will you please, sir? I'm trying. Mute yourself. I'll take a symphony.

Uh, I'm gonna take Jeremiah Love. I haven't taken him in many mocks. I think that the upside is just too high to not sounds good like he's doing good in camp. Um, this is a good example, too, of getting the guys you want. Um because the running next running backs, Javante Williams, Josh Jacobs, Brees Hall. If I don't take one here, then I'm gonna be looking at Cam Scataboo, DeAndre Swift as my running back, too, which I do not want to do. I am going to take Josh Jacobs. The good pick. In fairness, the Homer in me probably comes through through that. Um, but the touchdown upsides there, I don't think he's gonna be suspended. Um, not at this point. I haven't thought about his case. So um, I know that it is currently still open. Yep, that's a thing, but like I'm at this point, unless we hear anything else, it's not gonna freak me out. He was drafted as the running back like 13 or 14 here. Um so I don't mind that. I have strong, strong receivers, probably the best receiver, one of some of the best receivers in the league so far. I like the upside of Jeremiah Love, and then taking an anchor and Josh Jacobs. Um, I'd like to see another one. I'd like to be I'd like to be able to get another one, but now that you have your two, you don't have to reach, right? Right. Um yeah, so it's Adam, you're up.

What are you looking at? Thinking of going after your voice. Uh do I take Waddle here and really ruin the running back situation?

Well, why don't you just go zero running back for this draft?

Show the people how it would look at look. That that'd be really funny. Uh do it. Go with some low-end talent at the backs. I'm gonna take Brees Hall.

Okay, cool. Yeah, so Adam, you're looking at JSN, Drake London, Brees Hall, Trey McBride. I think that's a really good start.

I I think it's awesome. I think it's good value all across the board, you know. I mean, Brees Hall, okay as your running back one, but he's gonna get all the touches as far as volume in in New York. They've got two other good backs, but Brees Hall's still a stud.

Yeah. Uh he offers Brees Hall is that guy, though, that offers the higher upside. He's just on the worst team of those guys that I was talking about, right? Javante Williams has a solid floor. Josh Jacobs, solid floor. There's no reason Brees Hall couldn't be a top five running back.

And we've seen it before. It's just whether or not he I mean the team can support him enough. Um, Adam, you're gonna be up here, and again, and you are staring at Tet McMillan, McMillan, Garrett Wilson, Travis H. Luther Burton, Malik Neighbors is staring at you down there.

You know what are you feeling? Garrett Wilson is attractive here because that's a really good receiver room then. Mm-hmm. Do you want two jets on your team, though? That's the problem. That is the problem. Um I gotta go, I gotta go back here again, and I'm gonna go with Hwo, one, okay.

Han from the uh Saints. What are your thoughts on him this year?

SPEAKER_00

I think he's boomer bust. He's gonna either have a stellar year or he's gonna be, you know, okay to bad. I I just you know, you don't know what you're getting out of Alvin Kamara anymore. Um I I think he who knows? I think it's a coin flip. I I think he's he's either really good or really bad, man.

Expert uh take that.

And I also yeah, I I here's the thing. I think he'll be fine. You can take him at this point in the draft where we were in round five here, and I think it's okay.

Um I am up back-to-back picks here, uh, looking at Lamb Jefferson, Love, and Jacobs. There's a lot of receivers. That's it. That's that's kind of what I'm staring at. I am going to go ahead and I'm going to take Malik Neighbors. I think if that hits even with the knee, eh? Even with the knee, if he is back and he plays, he's going to be great. And Malik Neighbors in your flex with Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb is fantastic. Um I need a running back. I only have two. I'm looking at David Montgomery and Base Schaltootin and Bucky Irving. I'm not a huge fan of that. So I'm gonna go ahead and I'm going to take another receiver and I'm gonna take Luther Burton. Okay. Um I will say I do, and at least in Yahoo right now, I think Luther Burton's being overdrafted. Um I think and Roma dude say underdrafted. I think they should be right next to each other. Um there shouldn't be a giant gap. And there isn't, it's not a giant gap, I should say. It's about 10, it's a whole round, so it's not terrible. But um give me the younger guy. But you know, if you're between Burton and Odunze, it's the age-old question. Which side are you on? Are you a team Adunze? You team team Burton? Some want the upside of burden upside of Burden, some want the Odunze what we've seen, right?

And I was gonna say I like the upside of Burden. Um, but I have a lot of question marks about the quarterbacks, so I don't like either of them as far as like confidence pick. You know, why out of here? I don't think he's gonna reproduce, you know. Uh you know, I should take a Q here. You're looking at QB. Thinking about it. There's gonna be a run, I just know, but I'm gonna go ahead and take Roma Dunze as an ice flex. Oh, look at us. So we're covering all the bases. What are your thoughts on Caleb Williams? Why I I just don't know that he can replicate his his completion percentage, it was so bad. Um kind of had that T Bomania magic in him. He did the Iceman, you know. So I like that clutch factor.

He he did but the clutch factors there, so I I don't know what to think of him. I think Ben Johnson is a good coach, obviously. I got a C plus for that Odunze pick, so maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Um, so it's uh could have gone Christian Watson. He's injury prone. Um, you know, I just I have question marks about kill uh Cale Williams. I just don't know that he can replicate what he did, you know. And I will go with a guy that I don't like, but I need a quarterback that can produce points with his legs, too. We'll go Jalen Hurts. Well, why don't you like him? Like the football player? The the football player, like I just don't think he's a franchise guy at the end of the day. He won a Super Bowl, yeah, yeah, yeah. But you know, I I just don't feed into the sauce like other people do, but he's a fine fantasy quarterback.

Could could have taken Justin Herbert there. I did not want to touch a charger. Really? Just don't like him, man. Oh, is this a Broncos thing? Kinda, but you you know my thoughts on Justin Herbert. It's all the love. What's he done? He got my he has Mike McDaniel now. Yep, oh, there he goes. Uh that's nice. That's nice. Good for him. Yep. Maybe we'll actually want a playoff game then.

Tell me more. Um, I'll be up here in a minute. Again, CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Malik Neighbors, Luther Burden. I think I'm good at receivers. Like I don't really penny to push that. I have Jeremiah, Josh Jacobs. Um, I need another running back. At this point in the draft, I'm a big fan of kind of getting the guys you want to go get, right? Yep. Um go get your boy. Go get your boy. I'm gonna go get my boy. You know who he is. It's Tony Pollard. I knew it. No matter how much you no matter how much you want to complain, the man is the only guy running the ball there. That's true. Right now, yes. And then I'm gonna go ahead and take another uh running back, someone who isn't gonna have to fight for yard for a position, I think. Give me J.K. Dobbins. Oh, he's gonna get him. Um I think that he has that early down roll locked up, and I don't believe so. I was looking between him and Ramondre.

And what I feel more in in my how my team is sitting right now, I grab the upside in Jeremiah Love. I need guys now that will are going to produce. Like I don't want to risk things here.

Do you feel better about Ramondre Stevenson holding off Travian Henderson or J.K. Dobbins holding off RJ Harvey?

I mean, obviously the health is a factor, but I I trust JK. Yeah, I a hundred percent think it's a lot more likely that RJ Harvey does not take and RJ Harvey's been gone. He's he's been drafted.

He has the tough shot upside. I'm gonna take Manung guy because he's my boy. Go get who you want, right? That's a C pick, apparently. Who cares about that? Doesn't matter. I I think he's gonna be the number one eventually in Chicago.

J.K. Dobbins was a D plus. Nice. Not nice, terrible. Um, what round are we in? Do you know? We're in the ninth round.

Yes, ninth round. Um, we'll be up here in a minute. Neither of us have taken quarterback, so we're on a wait and see approach there. Um do you uh Dak Prescott just goes.

Oh, that's right. I was hoping for Dak Prescott at the CD Lamb, it would have been a nice stack, but not working out, it's not the end of the world. Um we only have a few more picks here. Adam, when at this at this point, are you just waiting on tight or you did you took a tight end, didn't you?

I took McBride, yeah. I'm gonna go running back again for a little depth. Um you know, actually, I don't know. Receivers tempting too.

There's a lot of receivers, man. I'm a big I think that'll that is what I'm learning out of out of this one, where it's like it's nice to have two really good ones. Yeah, but like Quentin Johnston was fine last year.

I I've got a pretty good room already. I'm gonna go dodle for the upside. Um Rico, you know, so I'll take him. Uh and now I'm feeling pretty good about. The depth, you know, for for the I'm pretty top heavy right now. Um, like the depth though.

Yeah, you know, I don't mind what you're doing here. I think at this point, I don't I don't have a quarterback. I think I'm just gonna kind of wait. I think that's well.

No sense reaching on a guy like Lawrence. You don't know if he's gonna be great again or not, you know. I am a big fan of Trevor Lawrence this year.

Um Jackson Dart, uh, I think both of them would be good uh good quarterbacks to have. I like the rushing ability. I mean, last year, last year um Trevor Lawrence had just a stupid amount of uh oh well there never mind, there he goes. But he had a stupid amount of rushing touchdowns. I'm gonna go Jackson Dart here, actually. I'm not gonna wait. Take him, take the Malik Neighbors stack.

Get your boy, and then I'm gonna go again, and what I'm going to do is I am going to take Patty Mahomes. So I'm gonna go back-to-back quarterbacks here and then play the matchups, assuming Mahomes is healthy, um, which I think is it looks like he's going to be.

Yeah, it seems like he has a brace on a camp. He looks a little gimpy, but you know, it's expected that he's a little gimpy. He did.

Uh he did. Um, is there any world that you're taking RJ Harvey over Aaron Jones is still there? I think that's a great pick.

Um no, because you don't know what you're gonna get. Like he had 10 touchdowns last year, 12 or whatever it was, but that was with an injured JK Dobbins. I don't think he can replicate that. And they like the the third guy, they like the guy they took from Washington.

So he had 12. Um, five on the air, five in the air, seven on the ground. Definitely back half of the season type of thing, though.

Yep, but they like I said, they like the third guy too. So I'm gonna go ahead and take Quentin Johnston. He's a high upside guy. Oh, that's a plus rating.

Ignore the ratings. But I I I love that pick. I mean, I mean the upsides. I mean, that's the guy that's that's what you want later in drafts as someone who can take the top off and yeah, provide you know the boomer bust, and that he's uh he is boomer bust. He finished in the top uh 30 last year, 20, I think. Um so we're in the end of the draft here. We got one, two, three, four, five more rounds. Adam, how are you feeling on the team?

I I like my squad, I like the depth. Um, kind of boomer bust guys a little bit. Um, love my receiving core. Love my hey, no. Sorry. Sorry. Uh and oh yeah, Adam has a cat, by the way. Don't have pets, guys. Um, but uh, you know, I I like my squad. I I just have question marks about you guys, but you're gonna get that every year. So I am looking to get another receiver for some depth, and I'm not liking my options, but but I'm gonna go with a guy that is the clear cut number one for now in Kansas City and get Xavier Worthy. He's not what about Rasheed Rice? Don't care about him.

No, don't care about him. I don't think he's gonna be easy to do. He wasn't even there. He's another headcase. He wasn't he's just another head case. I'm staying away from headcases. That that uh Henry Ruggs draft uh trade I did a few years back taught taught me that.

Taught you that, huh? Um 11th round. We're let's do two more picks here. We don't need to do the kicker and punter. So I'm let's just finish it off here. Um I am looking at oh my goodness gracious. I'm not taking Rick Ricky Pearsall, I'll tell you that much. Nope. Stay away, folks. Though I will say, in the 12th round, if I can get this guy, this would be great. Makai Lemon. I mean, he's a first-round quarterback with a good receiver. Um, and there you go, we'll get him. So I'm gonna take him and then finish off our draft here with a running back. Oh, I'm sorry, I need a tight end. Uh Travis Kelsey, sign me up. Oh my gosh. You know, so we wait. Um and that's kind of what you end up with. But guys, I was looking at Dallas Goddard, Jake Ferguson, Mark Andrews, um, Nojoku, Okonquo. Okonquo, yeah. You never say it. Um if you wait, that's the type of thing you're gonna get. And the beauty about that is I will drop Travis Kelsey week two for one of those guys that's probably gonna be in your uh in your waiver wire. Adam, do you want to make another pick here?

I think I think that it's it's for me, it's not a 1A, 1B, it's a 1 and 2, and then a giant drop-off after that. Um Colston Loveland goes with the next pick, and then Javante Williams. Um you can still get Drake London or I am still going to go Drake London. Yep. Uh so yeah, you know, I get London, Robinson, Bowers. That is one really good player at all three. Um, I mean, with Bowers, you're gonna have a uh positional advantage over your league every single week.

I think also I as well, you know, there's a lot of talk about Jonathan Brooks taking the job from Chuba Hubbard, and I think a lot of that, while I do think it is certainly possible, I think it would take time. And I also think that he has a and there he goes, but Chuba Hubbard has a sixth round EDP and we're in the eighth round.
